51: Good little wife

A knock came to Xavier’s door, and he cringed and buried his head further into the pillow. He had dismissed the guards and told them to not bother him, not even if the palace was on fire. Whoever was at the door either had a death wish or had a death wish. He would be inclined to give it to them if they didn’t leave. He almost fell back to the state of sleep when another knock came on the door. The last two guards that were in his room felt his fury. However, what he did then would not compare to what he would do to the intruder at the door. His hand fisted in a second and his eyes fluttered, already angry, and it made his head hurt. Before he could take himself off the bed, the door opened and someone entered. Usually, he’d know the intruder by their scent, but the much wine he had drunk before falling into bed last night still affected his sense of smell. He didn’t care, he would do justice to the intruder either way.  He got off the bed and tu

52: Fear in rebellion

He wanted to. He wanted to end her life like he yearned to do so many times in the past, rid himself of her, and be happy. Her death won’t solve his problems, but it would take half away. Yet, he couldn’t kill her. Her blood was the last thing he wanted on his hands. He let her go and turned from her, while she choked and tried to recover from the pain he had inflicted on her neck. Driven by his fury, he stormed over to his bed and flipped it off the floor. It flew and crashed into the wall. He howled out in pain and anger and dropped to his knees. His heartbeat raced and his exposed skin grew hairier and his fingers contorted into a claw. These changes told him he was shifting. Alpha kings usually shifted at will and could control every of his shift, but Xavier found he couldn’t control what was happening to him. His wolf was fighting to take over, and this had never happened before. It terrified him. His emotions that had come into play in the last few minutes were severe a

53: Caught off guard

Mia stepped into the dining hall to have her breakfast after being summoned by Xavier. It's been a week since they had the talk and Xavier already came out of his shell. They had worked through a few things and reached a mutual understanding. Their agreement will continue and run its cause and they would maintain a healthy relationship until the end. Xavier promised to keep his hands to himself and with Mia's advice, he invited a listener in the Capital to be his counsellor. Listeners in the kingdom had one job, to listen to personal confessions and offer suitable solutions. They related to Lords, noble-born, alphas and royals on a personal level. They were lower than the ranks of priests and shamans but played important roles in maintaining balance in the kingdom. Every region had at least two listeners and the Capital alone had six. Xavier had never given thoughts to listeners while growing up, he never saw the point. He believed talking to them won't change anything and so he

54: Like your daughter

The maiden council meeting today was slowly reaching its end and elder Margaret rose to her feet to read out the notice about some activities that would take place during the week. A few of those at the court were hosting birthdays, having their rebirth and dedication in their various homes. Through the notification, those interested in these events would find it easier to join. Margaret led the announcement and, just like today, she always did it at the end of the meeting. After the first part of the announcement, Margaret flipped the pages of the note in her hand.“Tonight is the full moon.” she announced, bringing a happy cheer from the maidens seated, “and remember, safety comes first. Rules to keep while shifting. Rule one: Maintain territories. Do not go into foreign territory. You might get treated as hostile and unwelcome. Rule 2: Stay hydrated. This is important because shifting might take a lot from you and you shouldn’t be weak. Rule 3: Do not attack—”The door abruptly flew

55: Troubled mind

Mia’s chamber door flew open and Xavier sauntered in like he owned the place the next second. His narrowed eyes scanned the room in search of Mia and they flickered when he spotted her beside the wardrobe. “You should knock. I could have been naked,” she said, but she didn’t turn from her wardrobe, which she fitted a few outfits into. Desire flared in his eyes at her words. He wanted to see her naked one more time, but he knew she wouldn’t give him that. She played the long game. Wicked woman. “You’re not naked, and that’s the important thing.” They stay quiet for a while and Mia used the time to close up the wardrobe. Her heart jumped a little when she turned and saw him in a dashing blue coat and black trousers. His hair was in a neat bun and it highlighted his broad and mesmerising face, which his neatly groomed beard covered. He began speaking, snapping her out of her thoughts. “I heard you were amazing at the Maiden’s court today.” She raised a brow, moving over to the cha

56: The change within

Mia ran to the utter part of the woods, and she shifted back into her human form. They had wandered many miles off throughout the night after they shifted. As their shift ended and the morning approached, they sort to get dressed, returning to where their clothes were.Mia's eyes searched around for Xavier, but she didn't find him. He was giving her privacy, just like he had done in the last few shifts. She slid her feet through the second booth, and she steadied herself on her feet. She glanced up and Xavier dashed to stand before her. A surge of wind blew over her face at the impact of his lightning speed."You startled me," she pointed out, placing a hand on her chest for emphasis. His eyes twitched, and a smirk curled at the corner of his mouth. "Not intentionally," he replied, but she found that hard to believe.Unlike the last full moon where he let her take the lead, he had led the course this month. He had much likeness for hunting and he flexed his speed and strength in her fa

57: Doing the hard things

Elliot stepped forward, and Xavier’s eyes told him he was making a mistake. “We are not carrying out our will here, King Xavier. This is the desire of our father, stated in the scroll you just received,” he spoke up in his defence. “Our father’s desire? Is that a joke?” Xavier asked in an absurd tone. Mia watched the drama unfold. She didn’t know the alpha of alphas would be one making such crazy demands. Perhaps she didn’t know him. “This isn’t a joke. I believe our father is doing what he thinks is right.” Xavier did not like that, Elliott replied to him. “I already told you to leave!” he sneered. “Don’t make me shove you out.” Elliot took a step back. “You will defile our father’s request.” “I will defile the moon goddess’ request if she had made such insane demands.” Xavier bit back. “Enough, both of you!” Mia snapped at them and their eyes turned to her. “Is this a necessary procedure?” she asked the priest, maintaining a calm voice through it all, despite raging on the ins

58: True emotions

Sanctums: An inner room in a holy place such as a temple. While Xavier and Elliott waited at the outer court of the temple, Mia and the priests proceeded into the sanctum. Until today, Mia didn’t know they could be so many in the temple. The younger priest cracked the door open to what Mia suspected was the examination room, and she and Marco, the older priest made their way inside. At the centre of the room was a small bed stretched out. A stringed pole that lifted it a few feet above the ground held it up. There were thick chains on both sides of the bed which would hold still whoever was in bed while the examination took place. There was a tall stool beside the bed, almost the same height as it. On the stool were a few bowls, one holding scissors, knives, needles, and a silver tube. The second bowl held clean water and a bottle in it, and the third bowl appeared empty. Her heart skipped at what she just saw and immediately regretted agreeing to this. To say this scared her was

Mia stepped towards the First resort, the largest restaurant in the capital, at the heart of the city. The resort was a getaway site where most nobles could come to and have a good time. Mia had looked forward to meeting Koz and Elena since his return from Klean, but she hadn’t had the luck until a week ago. She gave him a late welcome and suggested showing both him and his wife around. But it turned out they knew the capital better. 60: Getting burnt

“Or what?” she demanded, glaring daggers at him. Her grave audacity made him boil. Yes, he was being protective, but it was for good measures. A few days ago, he had received an anonymous threat letter directed at him and the queen, and that had made him double the guard around the palace. He had increased hers as well and although there was a scowl on his face when he did; she said nothing. No, he wasn’t scared. He could protect himself from any attack, but he was scared for her. He didn’t want any harm coming to her while he figured out who could be behind the threats. What kind of King would he be if he didn’t do everything to protect his queen? A few names came across his suspicious radar. Elliott Ainsworth was first on the list because the snake was deceitful and sly ever since they were younger. Xavier knew that despite being slow to speak and act, he was vicious and unpredictable. They never liked each other, and they never hid that fact.
