Ch. 1: Pack Business

ALEKSANDR “Alpha, did you still want to go on a drive through the human town tomorrow?” I look up from my desk to see my Beta Dustin standing in the doorway. His sandy blonde hair hangs down on his forehead, while his brown eyes always have a hint of mischief, even in serious situations. He’s always had a very happy, light-hearted personality, and he’s the eternal optimist. He looks extremely young but he’s only 3 years younger than me. Those werewolf genes keep us looking much younger than our true age. Patrols have been running through the closest human town daily to check in, but he knows I like to see first-hand how things are going every now and then, and it’s been a while since my last visit. The humans aren’t aware of our presence, but it doesn’t matter. It’s our job to protect any human towns that fall within our territory. This doesn’t usually include large cities because no packs or pack members actually reside in the city and we let the human authorities handle thos

Ch. 2: Monday Afternoon

ALEKSANDR “Alpha Aleksandr Volkov, please explain to everyone what plan you’ve come up with to expand and protect our territories and continue to grow our finances.” “Of course, Alpha Reece. We know that the human population keeps growing and as the towns expand, they inch closer to each of our territories. This means that our pack members have to be more cautious when letting their wolves out for a run. It also puts our young pups at a greater risk of being exposed to humans before we have properly prepared them. I proposed we expand our immediate territory and the human areas we also protect through investment properties. We can run some businesses ourselves providing additional jobs to pack members, and some properties we can rent out to humans for their own business ventures. We can help the humans by offering them reasonable prices on their leases, while also controlling how close they set up to our official pack lands.” There are seven different North American packs repr

Ch. 3: Kingswood Park

ALEKSANDR Dustin walks into my office about 30 minutes earlier than we planned. He appears to be texting someone, so I ignore him and continue my work. After a few minutes I hear him chuckle as he slides his phone into his pocket. “Are you ready to go Alpha?” I glance up to be met with that familiar smirk, “Yeah, just give me about five minutes to wrap up this paperwork. I could definitely go for an early lunch today,” I respond with a sigh of relief. Dustin takes a seat on the sofa under the window, pulls his phone back out, and starts texting again while he’s waiting. He continues to chuckle to himself, and I find it quite distracting. I quickly finish up and we head outsides. I raise a brow at him and question, “What’s got you giggling like a schoolgirl?” Dustin doesn’t take offense to my comment. “Emmitt and I were just having a little fun planning a small prank for the patrol groups tonight. We’re going to--” “I don’t want to know!” I quickly interrupt him. I know

Ch. 4: Running

UNKNOWN My lungs feel like they are on fire, but I keep pushing forward. Running is my therapy. When I’m in a good mood, it’s a way to express my joy. When I’m stressed out or struggling, it’s the best stress reliever. It's a beautiful day in late September, but today has been a bit stressful, and I really needed this run. My usual route is just barely under 4 miles, and by the end I’m exhausted. I always run through the park last because there are more people there. It’s not that I really care that much about what others think, but when I know others can see me, I’m less likely to slack off and be lazy. This means less walking breaks, and I push myself a bit harder. I set small goals for myself while I’m running to keep me moving. I’ll often pick a sign in the distance and tell myself that I can’t take a walk break until I reach that sign. Then I immediately pick another object like a specific tree and tell myself that when I reach that point, I need to start running again

Ch. 5: Dinner

ALEKSANDR The thing I couldn’t understand was why her scent was so faint. It was almost as if she has passed by hours ago instead of minutes. The pull of the mate bond usually makes your mate’s scent overpowering, and being much stronger than any other scent adds to the allure. Dustin still didn’t know why we were following this human or why I was asking for more information about her, but I could tell he wanted to give me a hard time. We cut our drive through the town short, and he kept glancing at me with curiosity in his eyes as we head back to the pack house. He loves making jokes and getting me riled up, but he also knows not to joke about something serious, and since he doesn’t know the situation yet, he's obviously waiting until I tell him what’s going on. He’s my beta and my closest friend, so I know I can trust him, but there is too much happening here that doesn’t make sense. I need to wait until I have more answers before I tell him about my mate. At the very least

Ch. 6: History and a Mystery

ALEKSANDR I smirk at my mother, knowing full well that she likely already has some sort of inkling about what’s on my mind. Instead of asking her one of my many questions, I start with one that will give me a frame of reference to start the conversation, “What do you know? You’ve been giving me looks all evening, so I’d rather start with the information you already have.” My mother beams at me as she says, “So you HAVE found her.” I chuckle at her excitement, “Yes, my wolf recognizes her as our mate, but I’m confused about something…” My mind wanders back to earlier today when I first caught that faint but heavenly scent. “When you first scent your mate it’s usually overwhelmingly strong, but her scent was so weak that I couldn’t smell it until she was very close to where I was. I’ve never heard of a mate’s scent being almost undetectable. Do you know anything about this?” My mother has a far off look in her eyes, as if she is searching her almost 2 centuries of memories and

Ch. 7: Finding My Mate

ALEKSANDR After dinner with my parents, I head back to the pack house. I mind-link Dustin on the way and ask him to meet me in my office. I need to know if he was able to find out any new information about her, and at the very least, I feel like I should let him know what is going on. I don’t want this to be public knowledge yet, but as my Beta and best friend I can’t keep this from him any longer. Besides, I will most likely need his help with all of this as well. I have no idea how this could progress with the limited information my mother gave me. I walk into the pack house and it’s only 9 pm, but the place is peacefully quiet. With my wolf hearing I can tell that Dustin’s mate, Drea, is upstairs in their bedroom watching tv. I head straight to my office where Dustin is already waiting. He is lounging on the sofa with his head on one end and his feet up on the opposite armrest, but as soon as I walk in, he sits up and gives me a curious look. I’m sure he is hoping for an

Ch. 8: Professional Relationship

ALEKSANDR I barely slept last night. I tossed and turned thinking about my mate. I have so many questions, so much to figure out. Around 5 AM I roll out of bed unable to take it any longer. I know Dustin said he would find more information about my mate, but screw it. If I can’t sleep, I might as well do my own research. I quickly shower and throw on a pair of dark blue jeans and an ocean blue button-down shirt. I get to my office and shuffle papers out of the way so I can open up my laptop and begin my search. Now that I have her address it was actually quite easy to find information about her. Her name is Rieka Haas. Being in Real Estate makes it easy to confirm that I’ve found the right person because her professional picture is all over. It also helps that her name is very unique. There can’t be very many women named Rieka around here. The first thing I notice are her ice blue eyes. They are beautiful on their own, but they stand out incredibly framed by her dark bro

Ch. 9: Wednesday Surprise

RIEKA “Come on kids, you’re going to be late for school!”“I can’t find my shoes!”“Did you check your bedroom, the closest, and the basement in front of the TV?” “No, I didn’t look in the basement!” “Go look!” “Mom, where is my math homework?” “Did you put it in your folder like I told you to?” “Mom, I need $10 for my field trip today!” I roll my eyes as I help Eden, my 8-year-old, tie her shoes. Every morning it’s the same routine. Get up, do a little work, get myself ready, then wake the kids and help them get ready. I bought them all their own alarm clocks, but they still don’t wake up on their own. Once I get the kids off to school it’s time to get back to work. I actually work two jobs. I have done so many different jobs over the years that it’s hard to keep track, and I loved them all for different reasons. My first job is teaching English as a second language. I have always been a bookworm and a “Grammar Nerd.” This job is great because most of the people I teach

Ch. 10: THE Meeting

ALEKSANDR After further discussion with my mom, I’m even more nervous about meeting with Rieka, but my wolf is just thrilled that we finally get to talk to her. He doesn’t worry about silly little details such as whether or not we can actually be with her right now. He just wants to be calmed by her presence. It’s 1:30 pm, and I can’t focus on anything. I want to just leave for the meeting now, but what if she is there early working on something else and I interrupt her. Then it occurs to me that she doesn’t know what I look like. She’ll be waiting on me to approach her. I could hang back and watch her for a bit before our meeting. Dustin was planning on going with me, so I mind-link him to let him know that I’m ready. He laughs and links back that he’ll be out in front of the pack house with his truck in 5 minutes. As I climb into the truck Dustin gives me a cocky smirk. “You just couldn’t wait any longer, huh?” I don’t respond but give him a low grunt as I hold back my o
