ALEKSANDR
Dustin walks into my office about 30 minutes earlier than we planned. He appears to be texting someone, so I ignore him and continue my work. After a few minutes I hear him chuckle as he slides his phone into his pocket. “Are you ready to go Alpha?”
I glance up to be met with that familiar smirk, “Yeah, just give me about five minutes to wrap up this paperwork. I could definitely go for an early lunch today,” I respond with a sigh of relief.
Dustin takes a seat on the sofa under the window, pulls his phone back out, and starts texting again while he’s waiting. He continues to chuckle to himself, and I find it quite distracting. I quickly finish up and we head outsides.
I raise a brow at him and question, “What’s got you giggling like a schoolgirl?”
Dustin doesn’t take offense to my comment. “Emmitt and I were just having a little fun planning a small prank for the patrol groups tonight. We’re going to--”
“I don’t want to know!” I quickly interrupt him. I know that I can trust Dustin not to take it too far, but pranks aren’t my thing, and I prefer to be left out of it. Willful ignorance and all that.
I jump into the passenger seat of his gunmetal grey Ford Raptor. The windows are tinted so dark that no one can see inside unless we roll them down. The privacy is nice, but today the weather is gorgeous so as soon as Dustin begins driving I roll down my window and rest my arm on the door to enjoy the breeze across my arm and face.
Instead of wasting time going to a restaurant where we have to sit down to eat, we choose a drive through so we can take our food with us and begin our check on the town. I know fast food is unhealthy, but with our wolves’ fast metabolisms we burn it up so quickly it’s never really been an issue, and we don’t eat that unhealthy garbage all the time.
“I thought we could go to Kingswood Park to eat and check in,” Dustin says as he pulls out of the parking lot. "Then we can drive through the rest of town afterwards if you want."Kingswood is a fairly nice park now, but about 10 years ago it was overrun with drug users and gang activity. We spent several months cleaning it up and I made it a requirement for our team to do regular patrols through the park to make sure it stays safe for the human families to enjoy. Wolves never go here because it’s not big enough. Besides, it’s usually teeming with humans, which isn’t ideal for us. No shifting could ever happen there, so we can’t stretch our legs and run.
The park makes a big circular loop, so you enter and exit at the same point. We drive about one third of the way in and park on the shoulder of the road. Although the park is busy as usual, everything is calm as Dustin and I eat and talk about yesterday’s alpha meeting. As my Beta, Dustin was there but he stood off to the side listening. Beta’s may not be allowed to speak during the meeting, but he can always mink link me with his thoughts, which he often does throughout the meeting. Sometimes he has so much to say that I almost miss important information and I have to block him out from the mind link so I can stay focused. I’m not sure how he does it, to be honest. I think it would be impossible for me to sit through one of those meetings and keep my mouth shut the entire time.
As we are hashing through the finer details of the meeting, I notice that something feels off and my wolf feels it too. No, not off… just different. I don’t sense any trouble, but something definitely has me and my wolf both feeling distracted and on edge.
Dustin notices that I seem uneasy and questions, “What is it? Is there a problem?”
I shake my head in response. “No, nothing is wrong… I’m not sure what it is. My wolf is feeling restless, but neither of us can figure out why.”
My wolf is now pacing in my head and growing more agitated by the second. My nostrils flare as my wolf and I check for the scent of rogues or anything else out of the ordinary. Our eyes are scanning the area. I start with the obvious areas where something or someone could be hiding, like the tree lines, but I don’t see anything. Then, I begin observing all the people in the area.
There are a lot of humans in the park today, maybe more than usual, but since I’m not here all the time it’s hard to say. Some are walking, while others are running or biking. Finally, I catch the faintest smell. It’s so faint that if my wolf wasn’t already on alert, I might have missed it. My senses are usually heightened, and I can pick up everything, so why is this so subtle? Whatever it is must be far away.
Dustin can see that I’m focused on a scent and looking all around so he quietly and patiently waits for my next move. The smell is very slowly growing stronger, and my wolf is pacing franticly in my mind. It’s finally strong enough to be distinct. The smell is a soft combination of milk and honey with just a hint of something else. Fresh rain? Yes, they are all subtle scents, but they mix together perfectly. It’s the most intoxicating thing I’ve ever experienced.
As soon as I identify the scent, a woman jogs past the truck and the scent begins to fade. She must be the source! I heard music playing from her phone when she ran past us. It sounded like… German? She looks like she might be in her late 20’s. She is pushing a jogging stroller with a child who looks to be about five years old. Her hair is a dark brown, almost black, and short. It hits right at her chin with an undercut on the left side. Her skin is pretty pale, and she has tattoos on both of her arms and one on her neck. She’s so pale that if I didn’t know she was human she might be able to pass as a vampire.
She’s not super thin, but she also isn’t severely overweight. Most of her extra weight is around her stomach which makes sense seeing as how she has a child with her. Some humans tend to gain weight there after having babies. Even through her black leggings I can tell that her legs are toned, and it makes sense that they would be if she is out running with a jogging stroller.
I can’t see her eyes because she is wearing sunglasses, but she is moving further away from us when I realize my wolf is trying to get my attention. My wolf is shouting, “Mate! Mate!”
I’m so stunned that it takes me a minute to get my brain moving again. Meanwhile, Dustin is still sitting there staring at me, waiting for me to give him instructions or tell him what’s going on, but I still can’t think straight. How can this woman be my mate? First of all, she’s human! She also has a child, which means she might already be in a relationship with another human.
I’m both fascinated and stunned. I never thought I would get a second chance mate. I’m also confused because her scent never got very strong, even when she was right next to the truck. This doesn’t make any sense. A mate’s scent is supposed to be overwhelming. The strongest, most intoxicating scent you’ll ever experience.
Her scent was absolutely enticing, but not strong at all. If I hadn’t already been scenting the air when she passed by, I might have missed it all together or assumed it was my imagination. I need to know who she is, and I need to find out more about her.
I need answers.
It’s a good thing I’m having dinner with my parents tonight. I just hope this is what my mom was planning to discuss.
UNKNOWN My lungs feel like they are on fire, but I keep pushing forward. Running is my therapy. When I’m in a good mood, it’s a way to express my joy. When I’m stressed out or struggling, it’s the best stress reliever. It's a beautiful day in late September, but today has been a bit stressful, and I really needed this run. My usual route is just barely under 4 miles, and by the end I’m exhausted. I always run through the park last because there are more people there. It’s not that I really care that much about what others think, but when I know others can see me, I’m less likely to slack off and be lazy. This means less walking breaks, and I push myself a bit harder. I set small goals for myself while I’m running to keep me moving. I’ll often pick a sign in the distance and tell myself that I can’t take a walk break until I reach that sign. Then I immediately pick another object like a specific tree and tell myself that when I reach that point, I need to start running again
ALEKSANDR The thing I couldn’t understand was why her scent was so faint. It was almost as if she has passed by hours ago instead of minutes. The pull of the mate bond usually makes your mate’s scent overpowering, and being much stronger than any other scent adds to the allure. Dustin still didn’t know why we were following this human or why I was asking for more information about her, but I could tell he wanted to give me a hard time. We cut our drive through the town short, and he kept glancing at me with curiosity in his eyes as we head back to the pack house. He loves making jokes and getting me riled up, but he also knows not to joke about something serious, and since he doesn’t know the situation yet, he's obviously waiting until I tell him what’s going on. He’s my beta and my closest friend, so I know I can trust him, but there is too much happening here that doesn’t make sense. I need to wait until I have more answers before I tell him about my mate. At the very least
ALEKSANDR I smirk at my mother, knowing full well that she likely already has some sort of inkling about what’s on my mind. Instead of asking her one of my many questions, I start with one that will give me a frame of reference to start the conversation, “What do you know? You’ve been giving me looks all evening, so I’d rather start with the information you already have.” My mother beams at me as she says, “So you HAVE found her.” I chuckle at her excitement, “Yes, my wolf recognizes her as our mate, but I’m confused about something…” My mind wanders back to earlier today when I first caught that faint but heavenly scent. “When you first scent your mate it’s usually overwhelmingly strong, but her scent was so weak that I couldn’t smell it until she was very close to where I was. I’ve never heard of a mate’s scent being almost undetectable. Do you know anything about this?” My mother has a far off look in her eyes, as if she is searching her almost 2 centuries of memories and
ALEKSANDR After dinner with my parents, I head back to the pack house. I mind-link Dustin on the way and ask him to meet me in my office. I need to know if he was able to find out any new information about her, and at the very least, I feel like I should let him know what is going on. I don’t want this to be public knowledge yet, but as my Beta and best friend I can’t keep this from him any longer. Besides, I will most likely need his help with all of this as well. I have no idea how this could progress with the limited information my mother gave me. I walk into the pack house and it’s only 9 pm, but the place is peacefully quiet. With my wolf hearing I can tell that Dustin’s mate, Drea, is upstairs in their bedroom watching tv. I head straight to my office where Dustin is already waiting. He is lounging on the sofa with his head on one end and his feet up on the opposite armrest, but as soon as I walk in, he sits up and gives me a curious look. I’m sure he is hoping for an
ALEKSANDR I barely slept last night. I tossed and turned thinking about my mate. I have so many questions, so much to figure out. Around 5 AM I roll out of bed unable to take it any longer. I know Dustin said he would find more information about my mate, but screw it. If I can’t sleep, I might as well do my own research. I quickly shower and throw on a pair of dark blue jeans and an ocean blue button-down shirt. I get to my office and shuffle papers out of the way so I can open up my laptop and begin my search. Now that I have her address it was actually quite easy to find information about her. Her name is Rieka Haas. Being in Real Estate makes it easy to confirm that I’ve found the right person because her professional picture is all over. It also helps that her name is very unique. There can’t be very many women named Rieka around here. The first thing I notice are her ice blue eyes. They are beautiful on their own, but they stand out incredibly framed by her dark bro
RIEKA “Come on kids, you’re going to be late for school!”“I can’t find my shoes!”“Did you check your bedroom, the closest, and the basement in front of the TV?” “No, I didn’t look in the basement!” “Go look!” “Mom, where is my math homework?” “Did you put it in your folder like I told you to?” “Mom, I need $10 for my field trip today!” I roll my eyes as I help Eden, my 8-year-old, tie her shoes. Every morning it’s the same routine. Get up, do a little work, get myself ready, then wake the kids and help them get ready. I bought them all their own alarm clocks, but they still don’t wake up on their own. Once I get the kids off to school it’s time to get back to work. I actually work two jobs. I have done so many different jobs over the years that it’s hard to keep track, and I loved them all for different reasons. My first job is teaching English as a second language. I have always been a bookworm and a “Grammar Nerd.” This job is great because most of the people I teach
ALEKSANDR After further discussion with my mom, I’m even more nervous about meeting with Rieka, but my wolf is just thrilled that we finally get to talk to her. He doesn’t worry about silly little details such as whether or not we can actually be with her right now. He just wants to be calmed by her presence. It’s 1:30 pm, and I can’t focus on anything. I want to just leave for the meeting now, but what if she is there early working on something else and I interrupt her. Then it occurs to me that she doesn’t know what I look like. She’ll be waiting on me to approach her. I could hang back and watch her for a bit before our meeting. Dustin was planning on going with me, so I mind-link him to let him know that I’m ready. He laughs and links back that he’ll be out in front of the pack house with his truck in 5 minutes. As I climb into the truck Dustin gives me a cocky smirk. “You just couldn’t wait any longer, huh?” I don’t respond but give him a low grunt as I hold back my o
RIEKA As I cross the parking lot to my own vehicle, I see a familiar dark grey Ford Raptor. I think it was the same one I saw in the park the other day. Not many cars in this area are that distinct with the extremely dark window tint. Then again, this is a small town and if the owner lives in town, it would not be surprising to see the same car around town at different locations. I pull out of the parking lot and drive to the middle school to pick up Alex, and one of my favorite songs comes up on my shuffled playlist. “Shut Up and Dance” by Walk the Moon is exactly what I needed to match my good mood after a great meeting. I love the fun carefree attitude of the song. I’m actually a terribly awkward dancer, but it doesn’t stop me. I love to dance! As I approach the middle school, I realize that I’m a few minutes early. One of my neighbors agreed to watch Calvin for me during the meeting, so I’m taking advantage of this small window of peace and quiet. I love to read, and I
