Chapter 40: Grand Rivers Part 2

“Squeak” “Hiss” Feeling something pressing down on the foot of the bed and then hearing a squeak, then a hiss, I quickly open my eyes to see her standing there.  I really can’t tell if I am dreaming or not, so when I sit up and climb out of bed, I am not surprised when she is gone.  She simply has vanished into thin air. The only thing left when I look down at the bed is a long strand of her blazing red hair.  Picking it up carefully, I take it over to the light and inspect it.  At first glance, it seems perfectly normal, but when I bring it closer to my face, I decide that it looks strangely alien or even worse like it is fake.  If feels strange too, because it looks smooth, but the outside feels like sandpaper.  When I bend it, I am sure it would snap, but instead all it does is stretch and then bounce back as soon as I release the end.  Confused by this whole thing, I bring it up to my nose and take a whiff before

Chapter 41: I'm Coming To Get You

After rolling into town last night and getting a good night’s sleep for once, I feel refreshed and ready to take her on if the situation arises.  However, it seems lately that has been few and far in between.  But now while sitting at the café for about an hour, I look around because I feel a strange sense of déjà vu when I see a little girl waving at me from the corner and smiling. She has cute little piggy tails and dimples that could make anyone smile, but there is something familiar about this whole thing.  Like this has happened before not too long ago and I just don’t remember it.  Till finally I do.  A couple years ago, it seems this very thing happened at a restaurant while I was waiting for someone.  Except then the girl in question was really “her” and she ended up creeping me out so badly that when I left it weighed on me heavily.  I shake my head because I can’t believe that I had forgotten that so easily.  It reall

Chapter 42: Hampstead

Waking up this morning with sleep in my eyes, I wipe them clean with the cuff of my sleave and then climb out of bed.  Before standing up, I scan the room for any gifts “she” may have left me last night.  As I think back to yesterday, I note it was such a strange day, that I had a hard time sleeping all last night. That is really saying something, considering every day for me is stranger than for most.  If I stop to really think about it, I might go insane just by all the nightmarish fueled images that run through my head.  Some days I just wish that this had never happened.  Others, I look forward to the moment when I get to lop off “her” head.  While shrugging my shoulders, I murmur under my breath, “Maybe today will be a good day, who knows?” Ignoring the constant dripping of the sink in the little kitchenette, I walk past and into the bathroom before settling down on the toilet.  Feeling something strange is about to hap

Chapter 43: Sequim

On the way to western Washington State to see a man named Duke, I stop along the side of the road for the night.  My eyes start to close before I know it and everywhere I turn, I see her face and that bright red hair on everyone from man to woman.  This is just so unsettling that I must finish this very soon.  If I don’t, I probably will go insane.  That is if I haven’t already. After a few short hours of shut eye, I feel rested enough to continue my journey to Sequim in Washington State.  It’s a small town, that is right next to a forest where far too many hikers like to gather.  A waterway, where all kinds of people gather to fish, and even a lighthouse that visitors like to stop by on their way.So, when I say this is a small town, it is in many ways.  But in the last several years of chasing after “her”, I have seen truer small towns than this one.“Honk”I jump and then look

Chapter 44: Mount Vernon

Driving into Mount Vernon, I remember from high school when I learned that this is the home to George Washington’s estate.  It is a beautiful town with a down home feel.  Yet, there is something off about it.Everywhere I look, I notice that the people are all taking their time, walking along slowly.  No one seems to be in a hurry to go anywhere and the strangest thing of all, is that they all look like they stepped right out of a 1930’s movie.  It makes me wonder if there is something else going on here besides an appearance of “her” two days ago. I had been contacted by the leader of Luminous at the same time as she had last struck.  Is this coincidence or are they trying to throw me off her scent?  Why would they want her to keep going? It has been 5 years since I started this whole thing and yet I don’t seem to be any closer to stopping her than I was when I first started.  Shaking

Chapter 45: Mount Vernon Part 2

After a good night’s sleep, I stretch and climb out of bed before deciding to take a shower and then grab something to eat.  Yesterday didn’t work out with the coroner, so I called him and said I would be there this morning at 10:15.  Scanning the room for any gifts from “her”, I see that the motel room attendant left me a towel and a bar of soap per requested. Pleased by this, I grab them and take a long hot shower before going down to the diner and eating a meal of scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage with a cup of black coffee to go.  After filling my stomach, I stand up and pay my bill before heading to the coroner’s office in the basement of the hospital.  The minute I walk in the front door of the lobby, the air is thicker, and I notice that the walls are stark white everywhere I look. When I walk up to the check in, a security guard glares at me and then asks sternly, “What are you here for sir?&r

Chapter 46: Back In New Mexico

After being chased by representatives of the Luminous order, I decide that I need to hide out for a while in a little town called Jemez Springs.  Walking through town, I must wonder if the reason why “she” picked this town this time around to attack, is because it is so old.  I believe when I looked it up on the search engine, it said it dates back to 2500 B.C. Perhaps there is something here that reminds her of the past when it was so much easier to steal people’s souls and they bowed down to creatures like her.  However, no one believes in monsters anymore unless they see them in person.  It’s amazing. Looking around at the mission and the historic sites, I stare at the people going by.  They have absolutely no clue that a real-life soul eater had been in their presence just a few short days before.  Matter of fact, I kind of hope that she is still hanging around this place so I can catch her in the act.  As I watch the su

Chapter 47: Where Am I This Time?

“I don’t know, maybe I hit him in the head too hard.” I hear a man’s low voice state softly in the distance before I open my eyes slowly.Struggling to open them, I close them quickly when I hear them walk over to me.  I hope they didn’t see my eyes flutter, but when one of them says, “Maybe.  Let me check to make sure he is even still alive.  Mr. Mahone would be pissed if we managed to kill him.” I know they didn’t and feel at least a bit relieved if nothing else, to know that I have the advantage for the moment. While listening, I stay perfectly still and take in everything they say.  “Joe.  Hey Joe, come here.”As I hear the heavy deliberate footsteps of a man who must be at least 300 pounds by the way he walks, I finally open my eyes when I feel the warmth of someone’s breath on my eyelashes and it makes them tickle.  The minute I do though, the man backs up quick

Chapter 48: In The Knick Of Time

I have never been happier to hear that hissing sound, then I am now.  “What in the hell?” I hear the bigger man yell just before he is picked up and thrown across the room. Just in time to see him launch across the room and hit the wall with a sickening thud of bone and flesh, I open my eyes and smile because “she” is here to save me once again.  This cat and mouse game has gotten out of hand, but for some reason I always feel like she has my back or at least wants to keep the game going.  If I am dead, she can’t play, can she? Seeing her so effortlessly pick him up, reminds me of how powerful she is.  Then she swipes her claws across the smaller man’s throat and bright red blood sprays everywhere as his throat opens for everyone to see.  Chunks of flesh mixed with blood spray too and then he falls to the floor while still quivering.  It is truly a shame to think that these two had just been on the verge of beating the shit out of me.

Chapter 49: Next Stop Vegas

After that long ordeal, I head west to Las Vegas.  Not only have I always wanted to visit there, but I heard on the radio that there was a strange report stemming from there, of a woman with red hair who mysteriously killed a five-year-old.  “She does like her little children.” I murmur under my breath before pulling in the gas station to fill up.I gaze into the rearview mirror before I climb out of the truck and sigh because I really need a shave and a shower.  Matter of fact, now that I think about it, I can’t remember the last time I have had one.  Surely, I must be smelling pretty rank about now. As I stroll up to the little station, I look up at the sign above the door and it says, “Marathon, get food and gas here.” I can’t help but to laugh at that before I enter and see an older woman in her 50’s, with dark brown hair and a really pale complexion, standing at the counter just reading a newspape
