Chapter 131

The sound of a ringing phone wakes me. I open my eyes in the dark room, trying to figure out where the sound is coming from, when I hear Edric clear his throat, and answer it in a husky, sleepy voice. “Yeah,” he says gruffly. He’s lying opposite me on a cot someone must have brought in while I was asleep. “Edric?” I hear the voice on the other side as clearly as if the person is standing in the room with us. “Adrian? What’s wrong?” Who’s Adrian? “Sorry, I know it’s late…but dad has lost his damn mind, and I don’t know what to do.” “Lost his mind how?” Edric asks, sounding a little more awake. “He’s been drinking, terrorising the Omegas…he’s not looking after the pack like he should. And tonight…he destroyed his office, then tore through the pack house…he’s passed out in the kitchen. I left him there.” “Oh fuck me. What about Jasper and Luca? Where are they? Can’t they help?” “Jasper transferred to another pack, and Luca…we don’t see him a lot, he’s always off somewhere…no one’s

Chapter 132

Edric's POV: Maya spends most of the morning, reacquainting herself with Deimos. It’s comforting to see how easily she falls back into her role as his mother. I have a little hope now that she’s still the same person, that she wasn’t defined just by the sum of her experiences. Maybe this can work. Maybe she did it because she knew it was the only way forward for us. Goddess knows, everything else we’ve tried backfired and all we’ve managed to do these last three months or so was to continually push each other away. “Edric?” Stephen asks from the door. “A word.” I look at Maya sitting on the bed with Deimos lying on her upturned legs. He is gripping her fingers while she plays pattycake with him. It’s altogether adorable, and she’s so engrossed in their little game, that she didn’t even hear Stephen. I nod at my Beta and lean over to kiss the top of her head. “I’ll be right back, okay?” “Yes,” she answers without taking her eyes off Deimos. She drops her head and blows raspberries

Chapter 133

Edric’s POV: Halfway back to the clinic, I stop. I’m suddenly wracked with indecision and doubt. The Maya waiting for me isn’t the Maya I marked. She’s someone completely different. She’s happy, positive, and bubbly – my Maya was always a little sad and afraid, but she was also strong and insightful with a twisted sense of humour that made me rethink life. Fuck. I can’t go in there. I don’t know how to talk to her. I lean against the wall, and close my eyes, swallowing hard past the lump that suddenly formed in my throat. “Edric?” Stephen asks. “Give me a minute.” “You have to go in there.” “I said give me a minute, dammit!” “You can’t leave it until--” “Shut up!” I snap. “I need a fucking moment to think.” “Think about what? She’s your mate, just go in there, and talk to her.” Exasperated and angry by his brash insistence, I let out a growl before I can stop myself. “That’s enough. Thank you for your input, I had to hear it, but you really need to be quiet now.” Stephen’s

Chapter 134

Edric's POV: Stephen waits outside Maya’s room for me. “All sorted?” he asks. “Sort of. We’ll find our way back to each other, I think.” “Good.” I lean against the wall and sigh. I am not looking forward to going down to the dungeons to interrogate the she-wolf that took Deimos. I just want this day to be over already, but it’s no use standing here wishing. It never gets you anywhere. “Let’s go interrogate that wolf and get it over with.” “I can do it if you’d rather stay with Maya,” Stephen offers. “No. I want to find out everything I can about that little pack.” “Don’t you know their Alpha? Ask him.” I wrinkle my nose at the thought of going back to that weird village. “Maybe one day, but not for a while yet.” We walk in silence down to the dungeons. My insides start aching and my balls contract painfully when I step into the cold, damp, stinking hole. Breathing through the panic, I follow Stephen to the she-wolf’s cell. She is a bedraggled site, sitting on the bed with her

Chapter 135

I sit on the edge of the bed watching Edric pack his suitcase while I nurse Deimos. My baby. I still can’t believe it. Edric can tell me all day long that I didn’t give birth to him, but it feels like I did. I’ve never loved anyone as much as I love this little boy. He starts fussing, and I move him over to my other breast. He’s huge, and I don’t think my milk alone is doing the job anymore. “Maybe we should put him on solids,” I say as I stare into my child’s sweet face. God, I love him. “He’s barely three months old,” Edric says. “Yes, but his development is off the charts. At this rate, he’ll be crawling soon. I can’t keep up with his appetite.” Edric throws a pair of socks in his messy suitcase and walks over to us. “I don’t know, sweetheart…maybe ask the doctor.” I nod and hand the baby over to him. I’m not so bashful about nursing in front of Edric anymore, most;y because he's been keeping his distance. Apart from hugging and kissing, he hasn’t tried to approach me sexually.

Chapter 136

Edric’s POV Leaving Maya and Deimos was harder than I expected, especially since I know how scared my mate is. She’s afraid to be alone with the Lycans, and with the full moon coming up, she doesn’t know what to expect. I’ve ordered Stephen and Cedric to stay with her during the shift, but it doesn’t make me feel any better. It's late afternoon when my plane lands on the private airstrip just outside the town. I booked myself into the little motel instead of assuming that Mountain Fire will accommodate me in their pack house. I don’t think of them as my pack anymore, and I won’t make any royal demands. Cameron waits for me with his guards at the little airport. “You didn’t bring a guard?” he asks when I get off the plane. “No. Do I need guards?” “Well, they’re your family, but…I’ve been receiving…increasingly concerning reports from Mountain Fire.” “Why didn’t you let me know sooner?” “They’re not your pack, not your problem,” Cameron answers as if it’s that easy. “But they’re

Chapter 137

Edric's POV “Dad,” I kneel next to my father. He’s passed out on the study floor, reeking of cheap whiskey and vomit. I look up at Adrian. “What do you usually do? Take him up to bed?” My brother shakes his head. “I turn him on his side and cover him with a blanket.” I sigh deeply and nod. “I guess we should do that then.” Cameron looks down at us with disgust on his face. “Goddess. What kind of wolf?” “One that’s been hit too hard too many times,” I say. “I know how he feels. If Maya wasn’t pregnant…” I shrug. “Oh come on,” Cameron counters. “Half the shit that happened to him, he did to himself.” “Yes--” I stand up so I can look the king in the eye --“and the guilt is eating him alive. It will be a kindness to relieve him as Alpha.” “I agree.” I look at Adrian. “And you? Are you ready?” “No,” my brother says. “But what else can we do?” I grin and grip him by the shoulder. “You’re more ready than you think. You handled those young warriors well.” He snorts in a way that re

Chapter 138

Edric's POV: I steal a glance at my father where he sits at the head table, cradling his head and refusing to look at me. He is unshaven, his hair uncombed, crust from the night before is stuck to his eyes, and he did not change out of his vomit-soiled clothes. I can smell him all the way over here. So can everyone else. I catch Adrian’s eye. He looks uncomfortable, and it’s easy to see that my father’s stink is making him physically sick. Fuck. Shit. I wonder if this is the life Adrian imagined when he left his pack? When I told him he’s the future Alpha of Mountain Fire? Probably not. Cameron did not join us for breakfast. He chose to eat outside with his warriors. Overnight, he lost what little respect he had left for my father, and does not want to share a table with him. It’s a huge insult to Joshua, but I don’t blame Cameron. I don’t want to be here either – only my love for my brother and father forced me downstairs today. My father clears his throat and rises. “Silence!” he

Chapter 139

The moment my phone rings and wakes me, I’m annoyed. Deimos kept me up from the moment Edric left, and he finally dozed off long after sunrise. At first, I try to ignore the phone, but as soon as it stops ringing, it starts up again. Groaning, I roll over to Edric’s side and grab my phone off his nightstand. “What?” I growl. “What do you mean what?” Edric asks on the other side. “Oh God, I’m sorry,” I say, genuinely happy to hear his voice. “I’m just annoyed.” “Why?” “Deimos was up all night.” “Really? He’s usually such a good sleeper.” I yawn loudly and rub my burning eyes. “I think he’s teething.” “Already?” “Yes. He’s been chewing on everything, including my nipples.” Edric laughs softly. I’m sure if it were his breasts, he wouldn’t be so amused. “I shouldn’t be surprised. Did you speak to the doctor about putting him on solids?” “Uh-huh. He says no.” “I’m sorry, my love. Give it another month or two I’m sure--” “In less than two months, we’ll have our second baby. I don

Chapter 140

Edric's POV: I knock on my dad’s door, my heart beating wildly with apprehension. “What do you want?” he calls out. Sighing, I push the door open and step inside. “Dad. Are you drunk?” “Not yet. Unfortunately.” I sit on the edge of his bed, watching as he walks over to his bar on the other side of the room and pours himself two fingers of whiskey. “Do you want some?” “It’s not even twelve yet.” Joshua shrugs, takes the bottle from the bar, and plops down in an armchair. “It’s happy hour somewhere.” “Dad. Why are you doing this to yourself?” He empties his glass and pours more whiskey. “Why shouldn’t I do it? My pack was ripped from me, all my dreams for your future has been destroyed, and to top it off, you defied my orders and let that…thing live, because that little slut of yours wanted him.” I grip my thighs tightly, focusing on the way my nails cut through my jeans and into my skin as I try to keep the anger at bay. “She’s my mate. Don’t talk about her like that.” “Then ag
