Only Way to Save us

Meryl peeked from her place around the edge of the stairs. When she looked straight up, she saw her stepmother, Lady Judith. Her hair was a mess. She loomed over the railing so steeply and dangerously that with one push she could topple down. It seemed that she had too much to drink, but she never acted like this before. This was more than just drinking. She seemed to be on a high. Her face was looking haggard even from her distance.  Judith swayed and danced away from the railing with her hands up in the air, humming a song with her nasal voice that sounded like a crow’s call. Once again she came to the railing and bent over it dangerously, the decanter in her hand turning parallel to the ground and spilling its content. She stood straight all of a sudden and took the decanter to her mouth and chugged at its contents. Judith threw it down the railing and wiped her mouth with her sleeve.

Shenanigans

“This is absolutely ridiculous! I think you have heard wrong, Patsy!” Meryl said a bit loudly. “I will never accept to become Lord Alex’s wife.” Her stomach dropped. What about Brishor and Chezzal? She couldn’t betray them. But what was she even thinking? She had run away from Galdere, from the two dragons only for her people. And now that she had a chance to salvage their situation, she was balking? “No!”  Patsy stared at Meryl with eyes full of gloom and dashed hopes. “M’lady, I don’t know about your mother, but no one is going to force you into marrying Lord Alex. However, this is the only way you can save us and you know it. People in Windley would not see how much you will benefit; they will only see their benefit. If you won't accept Lord Alex’s proposal, you will deprive us of the only chance we have ever had in so many years.” Patsy was kneeling in front of her. She held Meryl’s hands and her

Havoc

“Shut up Morana!” Tere snapped. “You weren’t at fault.” She looked at Brishor and said, “I already told you that Meryl was a bitch. She is not worth you. She is too rustic and uncouth and doesn’t know what to talk with others. You should throw her in dungeons for speaking to Morana like this. Morana is the nobility and she is the one who suits you better.”  A roar sounded and the next instant a slap landed on her cheek. Tere went flying, crashing into the stone railing which splintered on impact. Shocked as hell, she yelped in pain as others gasped. The crowd behind them started dispersing.  “Brishor!” Angus yelled. “How dare you?” He lunged at Brishor but Chezzal came to stand in the way and Angus collided with the General. He flung his hand at Chezzal, trying to punch him on his head, but Chezzal held his fist midair and punched him in his belly.

Showing Your Importance?

The midnight hour chimed through the castle, the ringing echoing through the dark and silent halls of the castle. Marriage with Lord Alex? The thought unsettled her so much that she needed something to do. Something to take her mind off the deal her mother had brokered with Lord Alex. Meryl found herself in the center of a storm that seemed to be sucking her at a rapid rate. Not able to sleep, she swept her feet off to the ground, tossing the blankets away. Grabbing a shawl from the foot of the bed, she wrapped it tightly around her. She walked to the window and glared at the gusty cold winds that whipped more rain outside. She missed the presence of two muscular bodies around her and her toasty bed. Her gaze went to the hearth that was burning, giving the room a soft glow, but even all that fire couldn’t make her feel good and warm. It had been two days and she missed the way she hugged Chezza

Compatibility

“Had Lord Alex asked me to marry him, I would have done so at the drop of a hat. But I have no idea why he is asking you. You should consider yourself lucky that he wants you along with this castle!” Viola spewed her venom more out of jealousy than out of fury. She had secretly liked Lord Alex.  Last time when he had come to the castle for the party hosted by her mother, he had shown a lot of interest in Meryl but she wasn’t interested in him. Viola had done everything to put her down in his eyes. And she had succeeded when he made fun of her in front of every guest in the party. Lord Alex had also insulted Meryl in front of everyone and they had all laughed at her. But on the inside Viola knew that he was doing it only because Meryl didn’t understand his advances. Viola was shocked when he had sent an offer to buy the Windley estate and asked for Meryl’s hand also. She was so jealous of Meryl that s

Hoarding

Along with Chezzal, Brishor went to the deep woods where the soldier had pointed out. There was nothing out there except the same snow over the pines and firs. However, what intrigued him was a thicket of naked pines. The two dragons walked inside the thicket. Shock flickered through them when they saw that some of the branches had snapped. They looked like that had been broken recently. Fresh snow had accumulated over them. Many beasts roamed around freely in the forest, but he had never seen branches felled like this. They were felled and broken in a circle as if to give space to a ritual that was performed in the middle of the thicket. With a dangerous growl rumbling in his chest, Brishor walked closer and his gaze went to the ground in the center. And right over there he found traces of ash. He knelt down over it and picked up the damp ash. He r

Scandalized

Closing the closet, Meryl walked to the bed, her breath coming out shallow because of anger. She brushed the edge of the heavy tapestry of the bed and ambled to the side table and then to the long table. She saw several glass bowls and found that all of them were empty. Dark red stains spotted their bottoms. Several thick syringes were strewn across the table. She picked up a bowl and smelled it and immediately recoiled. This was what stank of rotten lemons. “Yuck!” What were these, she wondered putting back the bowls. She rubbed her finger in one of the bowls and found that it was very sticky. She smelled it again and then with another “Yuck”, she wiped her finger on the edge of the table. From what she gathered, it looked like Judith was pumping this material directly into her veins. Perhaps that was causing her temporary insanity. Icy chill skittered up her back. Was Judith

A Paraziti

Judith gulped. She rubbed her neck as goosebumps lined her skin. She needed Nimbh like right now and instead, Valerie was talking about Meryl and her estate. “Look Valerie,” Judith said, ignoring how indecently Lord Alburn had cupped her breasts and fondled them. “It is not my fault that Lord Alburn couldn’t keep Meryl in his house. As for the Windley estate, I am getting a better deal from Lord Alex. He is paying me a higher amount and his only condition is that he marries Meryl. I think it will benefit us all in the long run.” Judith was not a fool to let this deal go. When Lord Alex had announced his plans to marry Meryl, Judith was shocked. She had made full plans on extracting Meryl out of Lord Alburn’s house. However, when her people reached his mansion, they came to know that Meryl was missing from there. Fear cruised through Judith as to whether Alburn had

The Meeting

Judith was seething with rage. “You are taking advantage of my situation!” she shouted. Her stomach was twisting in knots and she felt that if she stayed even one minute without the drug, she would die. “A hundred coins for one vial of blood is a crazy amount!”  Valeri tipped her head up and laughed. When she looked back at Judith, she smirked. “Then you should have thought about it earlier, Judith. We gave you a great option. You could have traded Meryl and sold your estate to us, but you got greedy.” She waved her hand as if to dismiss her. “Anyway, I don’t have the time for your gibberish. If you have the money to pay, you pay, else you can leave!”  Shock cruised through her body. She pursed her lips. She knew that Valerie was a tough businesswoman who never mingled emotions with business. Her body was shivering uncontrollably. With shaky hands,

Here for Meryl

Stunned, she whipped her head and her eyes locked up with those of Brishor. His pine green eyes stared at her intensely as his frame covered the door of the main hall intimidatingly. Fury settled in his features in his sharp cheekbone and tightly clenched jawline. His hair looked ruffled as if he had stepped out of a storm. He looked… beautiful. Shock blasted through her and it overwhelmed her senses. Meryl drew in a sharp breath. The way Brishor stared at her, it was as if he was stalking a prey. He looked menacing as hell. How did he find her? Everyone in the hall was looking in his direction. She flushed heavily, not expecting the male like him to ever find her. As if this wasn’t enough, she saw Chezzal walking and standing right behind him. He too was staring at her. The two seethed with power. She could feel the magic swirling around them. She could sense it, could see the magic tangling around her,
