Chapter 40: You Don't Want Me To Kiss You

Charlotte and Logan exchanged a skeptical glance.  “Mrs. Vazquez, why do you think he did it?” “María gave your wife his number because she wanted a gardener for that new place of hers. But that man was not just a gardener. He was in the drug and gun business,” Mrs. Vazquez said, lowering her voice.  “Is there anyone else here?” Logan asked. “No, just me,” Mrs. Vazquez said. “María just got so angry at me whenever I talked to her about him that I still find myself whispering when I talk about him.”  She stifled a sob and slowly rose from the couch.  “I need a few minutes,” she said, wiping her eyes with her sleeve and heading down a hallway next to the st

Chapter 41: Did You Think Of Him?

Charlotte thought she had enjoyed a few kisses throughout her life; there hadn't been many but they had always been pleasant, for the most part. Now she realized the other men had clearly been doing something wrong.Logan held on to Charlotte's chin as his tongue gently explored her mouth. At the same time, his lower lip bit on Charlotte's giving her a tingling sensation. His kiss was strong but soft, passionate but slow, and once he pulled away from her, Charlotte, for once, was left utterly speechless. They looked into each other's eyes for a moment, almost staring each other down, as if daring one another to be the one to break the spell. It fell upon Logan to do so because Charlotte couldn't think or do anything other than stare. "I apologize for that outburst of... passion," Logan said, straightening his suit. "It won't happen again."Charlotte was very confused. Shouldn't he want to keep kissing her? And why was she wanting him to do

Chapter 42: Aren't You Supposed To Stay home?

Charlotte called Detective Fontaine twice throughout the morning, but was told to call again an hour later, and then in the afternoon. There wasn't much more she could do from home unless she planned to stay on the phone all day. If she went to the office, Floyd would send her home. If she went to Logan's apartment to meet with his team, they'd tell Logan, and the last thing she wanted to do at the moment was think of him. What on earth had gone through her head to encourage him like that? Sure, Logan wasn't by any means unattractive, but she wasn't a silly teenager who kissed people just because they seem so alluring when they're flirting with her. A part of her regretted lying to him about Edward. The truth was Edward had been the last thing on her mind when she was kissing Logan. All she could think of was how different his kiss was, and how she'd never felt someone want her but restrain themselves so much at the same time. She didn't even know how to put into words how d

Chapter 43: In The Hospital

Charlotte dove towards Mary, pulling her head up and checking to see if she had bumped it against the mirror. Thankfully, there was no blood pouring out of her skull.  "Doris!" she cried out, and the woman was already behind her and began to help Charlotte pull Mary out of the dressing room.  The once pleasant and almost too sweet voice of the saleswoman was replaced with a stern and serious efficiency that surprised Charlotte. She hadn't given Doris much credit.  "We'll place her on the couch," Doris ordered Charlotte. "Hold her head up, and check to see if she's breathing. I'm going to call 911. If she opens her eyes, try to keep her awake. Do you have any idea what could be wrong?"  "No," Charlotte said as the two dragged Mary towards the couch, taking care not to hurt her. She was so light that it wasn't hard to move her, but the dress she had been trying on was huge, and it was hard to walk and not step over it.

Chapter 44: Logan

Logan had really messed up this time. When Charlotte had been shot, he promised himself he'd stay away from her physically as much as possible. Clearly, everything her friends had warned her about was true. Logan was trouble, and sometimes, no matter how much money he could throw at problems, trouble seemed to follow him.It was easy to avoid her when she was in the hospital; he wished he could go visit her but knowing that her mother would be there deterred him. And he had slipped once, after all. The correct thing would've been to cut all contact while she was recuperating, but noooo, Logan went and got her a mobile cell phone, that now made her available to him at all hours of the day.It was infuriating how Charlotte had no idea of the effect she had on people. Well, it was obvious she knew she was pretty and that she turned heads wherever she went. But it was more than that. She walked through the world as if she intended to own it, and not wit

Chapter 45: Is That Clear Enough?

Mary was going to be fine. The doctor who looked at her came out to talk to Charlotte a few minutes after she got off the phone with Edward, and since she was the nearest of kin present there, she was the one who heard the status first. "We're still not sure what caused her to bleed so much, but she's stable and so is the baby," the doctor said. "You are the cousin, right?""Yes," Charlotte said. "I'm her closest relative here in Atlanta.""Well, for now, she's going to require absolute bed rest. She won't be able to work, carry things, cook, anything. I want to keep her overnight until we get her test results, and then she can go home.""Thank you, doctor," Charlotte said to the woman. The doctor's gaze lingered on Charlotte a little longer, and Charlotte was about to ask her if there was something else she needed to tell her when the doctor spoke again."Now I remember! You were brought in about a week ago. Rubber bullet

Chapter 46: I'm Not That Easily Scared

It had been a very long day for Charlotte. Starting with their trip to Mrs. Vazquez's home, Logan's kiss, then lunch with Floyd and the incident with Mary at the bridal dress shop, Charlotte was definitely not respecting the doctor's orders to take it easy. She didn't do so many things on a normal daily basis; now that she was supposed to be in bed or at least, resting, she had been all over the place. And now, in an hour, she'd be meeting Mrs. Hamilton in her home. She thought of telling Logan about it but then change her mind. He might want to dissuade her from going, and she needed to see the face of the person who most likely ordered the attack on her. She would be safe in the woman's house since she personally would never get her hands dirty and hurt Charlotte herself. No, she was a coward, and Charlotte wanted to see how she lied to her face. From what she gathered from Logan, Julia was a very good liar. But Charlotte was better. She was, after all, a South

Chapter 47: Into The Lion's Den

"Is everything all right?" Charlotte said, not quite understanding what was unnerving Julia so much. The garage door banged to a close and the motorcycle engine went dead. Then the gears fell into place inside Charlotte's brain. "If you're expecting company we can just talk some other time," Charlotte continued, while Julia ignored her. "If you'll excuse me, I'll be right back," she said.As soon as she stood up, the door to the garage opened. A man with dark brown hair and green eyes stepped inside. He wore a black t-shirt and jeans and looked very confused. Julia froze in her place, looking at the man wide-eyed."This... this is my cousin. Al- Alex." "Huh?" the man said, eyes darting between Charlotte and Julia."This is Logan's lawyer," Julia said a little too loudly. "Maybe you should come by some other time, ALEX.""What do I care about that man's lawyer?" the man said with a thick Hisp

Chapter 48: She Was All Alone

Charlotte dozed in and out of sleep while the car kept moving. "I'm taking you to the hospital," she heard Logan say, his voice close to her ear."No, I just need to sleep," she mumbled, and then the world went dark around her again.Charlotte realized she was dreaming when she looked down at herself and the body she was in was around ten years younger. She recognized the yellow-flowered dress hat she had never worn again after that day.It was the day that her father died during their family barbecue. It was a hot and humid morning and the air smelled of coal burning in the grill. Her father, dressed in a white dress shirt and khaki shorts had started the fire very early, and Charlotte, having just woken up from a late night of hanging out with Edward on the roof of her house, had just gone outside. A few of her father's friends had already arrived, and the ladies were sitting under the shade of an oak tree sipping colorfu

Chapter 49: What Is Going On?

Charlotte opened her eyes to a dim room with sunlight filtering in through the curtains. She was laying sideways, facing black modern closets that she recognized as those in Logan's apartment. Even before she saw who it was, she felt someone was there in the room with her. She turned around brusquely and saw that a thin, beautiful woman with a blonde bob cut was looking at her. The woman was sitting on a chair near the window holding an open book in her hand. "Oh, you're up! I didn't mean to scare you," she said, setting the book down on the floor and standing up. "I'm Nina, Logan's friend. Let me go get him." She left the bedroom and softly closed the door behind her.  Charlotte had a lot of questions, but she doubted that Nina, whoever she was, knew the answers to them.  It was already late in the day from what she could tell from the light filtering in through the curtains. How long had she slept?  The memories from last nigh
