Chapter 31 - Xander

We walk to the edge of the woods and Devin grabs a tote bag out of a chest by a tree.  We quickly strip and stuff our clothes into the bag before shifting.  We had seen Arya’s wolf when she first arrived back at Artemis Pack.  She is beautiful.  Her wolf is large, which now makes sense, knowing that she is an alpha.  She is jet black with white markings down her muzzle and between her eyes, as well as a large white spot on her chest. Her body is leanly muscled, built for speed and agility.  Her coat is thick, her black eyes bright with intelligence.  However, this is the first time that Devin and I have really paid attention to each other's wolves.  We shifted to travel to the pack borders to go wait for Arya, but our minds were consumed by other things.  Now, I look at my male mate.  Is it weird to find a wolf sexy? Because he is.  His wolf is about

Chapter 32 - Hakeem

While Merry and I get the bacon ready, Gael beats the eggs before straining the oil from the potatoes and onions and mixing the whole thing together.“So, did you guys always know that you were bisexual?” Merry asks.“Si,” Gael says matter-of-factly.  I’ve always admired his easygoing attitude about his sexuality.  Not that my family ever said anything about mine.  They honestly were happy that I was happy.  But I had bowed to society’s feelings about bisexuality in men.  I buried it as deeply as I could.“Um, kind of.  I didn’t feel comfortable finding men attractive for most of my life.  I hid it from everyone, even myself.  I had just starte

Chapter 33 - Meredith

The next afternoon, Gael, Hakeem, and I are standing in front of the packhouse as a black Chevy Tahoe pulls into the drive.  The windows are heavily tinted, so I can’t see any of the car's occupants.  Gael kisses me on the head before walking over to the car.  Hakeem squeezes my hand, while we wait for our alpha to greet his people. An Indian man steps out of the driver’s side of the door.  He is about average height for a werewolf, at around six feet.  His toffee colored complexion and coal black hair catch the late afternoon light, his hair curling around his ears.  He leans back with his hands on his lower back to stretch, causing his shirt to rise on his abs and revealing a swirl of ink up his side.  Obviously, this is Declan. Gael opens the passenger door in the front and back seats.  Out of the front steps a petit

Chapter 34 - Brandon

The next week is long.  And difficult.  And so fucking busy.  But we are finally ready for the alpha meeting.  Many of the wolves have been moved around to make room for all of the visiting wolves. The construction for Devin’s parents’ house was made a priority and Dad and his new mates moved in earlier this week.  This left Dad’s old suites open for Xander, Devin, and Arya to move into.  Gael, Hakeem, and Meredith took my old rooms.  Gael’s sister, Carmen, and her mate are staying in the old Delta suite and Karamea, his beta, is staying in the old Gamma suite.  This leaves the cottage and some of the guest rooms open for some of the visiting wolves. But it still wasn’t enough space.  Some of the unmated warriors had to move back into their parents’ houses for the time being to lea

Chapter 35 - Zak

I wait at the high table with Brandon and Charlie on either side of me.  Gael, Hakeem, and Meredith sit at one of the front tables with Karamea, Carmen, and Declan.  The alphas of the other packs file into the room, finding their assigned seats. Once everyone is here, I come down from the dias and walk in front of the tables, just like I do when I am speaking to my pack.  I want these alphas to be at ease and the only way I’m going to do that is to show that I don’t feel that I am superior to them.  In fact, the only people that are currently seated at the high table are my two mates and I’m ok with everyone in this room knowing that I hold them in higher regard than them.  I expect that they would do the same with their own mates. “Alphas of the East Coast.  I am so pleased that you could all come to our meeting, even with the h

Chapter 36 - Arya

We are working out final emergency plans with the head warriors, deltas, and gammas that have accompanied their alphas to the meeting when the pack alarm sounds.  We’re being attacked!Quickly, warriors shift into their wolf forms, clothes shredding as they go.  Many of us recognize one another through newly established alliance links, but not all of us.“Take a good look around,” Devin calls, still in human form.  “Our alphas are still working on the alliances and you don’t want to attack a friendly during the fight.”Wolves quickly look around then head towards the western border, where faint snarls and yells can be heard.Xander looks at us and the former delta, gamma, and beta.  “We’ll need to stay i

Chapter 37 - Karamea

Suddenly, howls surround us.  Wolves pour in from the woods, surrounding us from three sides.Auē! (For crying out loud!)  I can’t believe this.  We’re severely outnumbered now with injured wolves still in the field. “Form up in a circle, backs to the mountain.  Arya! Devin! Xander!  You three cover Gavin.  Karamea and Hakeem, you guard the beta.  I want to try and get them out of this alive if we can.  Everyone else, get ready!”  Zak’s authority radiates throughout the clearing.  He shifts back into his wolf and we all move to follow his commands. The enemy runs at us and the first wave crashes into us.  I hold my greenstone patu to the nec

Chapter 38 - Zak

After Diego, Hakeem, and Karamea leave, I turn back to Gavin.  My friend.  He was almost as close to me as a brother.  And now, we’re here. “Shift, Gavin,” I say, trying to allow him to do it on his own. Gavin just snarls at me, baring his teeth.  Devin, Xander, and Arya inch closer, protecting me from the angry and cornered alpha in front of them. “Don’t make me force you to shift, Gavin.  Just do it.” Gavin chuffs, not believing that I can do it.  Hell, I wouldn’t believe it either if I hadn’t already done it to Mathias. “I said, SHIFT!”  My alpha tone rings through the air, Gavin isn’t as strong of an alpha as Mathias is and he isn’t abl

Chapter 39 - Brandon

The funeral pyres were large that night, fed on the bodies of the dead from both sides.  They light up the night sky, the smoke drifting toward the moon as the fallen wolves joined the Moon Goddess in her march across the night sky.  By morning, they would be in Selene’s realm and she would judge their souls. The largest pyre belonged to Former-Alpha Jared.  The entire pack had gathered around the pyres, except for those caring for the injured.  We sang the sacred songs, Lucille and Declan said the sacred prayers to send the wolves to their final resting place. Charlie and I stand beside Zak and Clara in front of the pyre.  Zak holds the large burning stick that will light his father’s pyre, his face blank.  Clara looks just as grief-stricken as when we found her in the bunker.  She hadn’t had to be told about her mate’s dea

Chapter 40 - Xander

The doctor insisted that Arya and Zak come to the hospital for testing.  Unsurprisingly, Zak was severely dehydrated and required several IV bags of fluids to be pumped into his system.Arya’s system seemed to be in shock from what she’d just done.  She, too, was hooked up to IVs and laid in a private room to rest. After a few hours, both seemed fine and the doctor let them leave.“What the fuck happened?” Devin nearly screams at Zak once we leave the hospital.  “Did you just decide that we didn’t need you anymore?”Zak looks like he’s about to speak, but nothing comes out.  Quickly, Brandon steps between the two.  “Devin, calm down.”“
