Better than the truth

The crescent moon shined alone in the lonely dark sky. Stars were hiding behind the clouds floating in the cool night.I was scared not because of what happened but because of what might happen after I reach home. The black screen of my dead phone stared at me as I tried to think about what I would say to my parents. It was late and no matter how much I tried to ask Damien to take me home it was useless. That's how I ended up sitting alone in the empty room that was next to the room in which I went the last time I was here.I was angry at Adam for getting me into this mess, I regretted the moment in which I told him about Damien but more than that I was thinking about Damien.I could see my future plans drifting away slowly just like the clouds in the sky.Blowing the air out of my mouth I stood up from the chair to get some water. I closed the bedroom room quietly and started walking down the stairs carefully. The dim lighting of the

Ignorance is bliss

The constant buzzing of the phone in my pocket was driving me insane. I was thankful for what Adam did yesterday but it did not mean I would forgive him for leaving me alone in the forest. The forest.... every time I closed my eyes the image of Damien's eyes was in front of me. I knew what I saw was real, just like that freakishly huge animal.Rubbing my head slightly, I looked at the time 30 minutes before I could leave. Not really paying any attention to the teacher I continued making shapes on my notebook earning some looks from Anna.  "Are you okay?"With a frown, I stared at Anna in confusion. She was not the one to care for anyone, well no one at the school at least."Yeah," I whispered back with a shrug, "why?"She glanced at the teacher quickly who was doing his work and we were supposed to read quietly. "Your face looks dull and you are not paying any attention to the class.""No one is paying attentio

Strange man

Ever since Faith and I used to play outside as kids I could always feel whenever someone was watching me. With time nothing changed, the small tingling feeling became more prominent whenever I felt someone's eyes on me. Faith always dismissed the feeling by calling me paranoid and I learned to ignore it as well. But at the moment I knew it was not paranoia, someone was watching me. The small distance from school to home became scary for me, it was like taking a walk in an alley from where anything could pop out anytime. The footsteps behind me became distant as I increased my speed clutching the pepper spray tightly inside the bag. I slowed my speed when I noticed a strange man dressed in an olive green jacket with a beanie over his head was standing on my way just a few steps away with his head tilted down.A knot formed in my stomach when I tried to pick if I should continue walking or go back. I ana

Dark as coal

"Hey baby sis," came a sweet voice similar to my mom but more energetic from the other end.  "Faith? Why are you calling me," I checked the time, "at 10 pm." Faith never called me at night, it was an unspoken rule made by her and mom. Utilize the silence that comes with the night.  "I just wanted to check up on you." I did not understand the meaning behind her words. "I know mom and dad are not at home and with everything happening in town I thought I should talk to you." A frown made its way on my face, "Do you know where are mom and dad?" There was a momentary pause from her side, "They went for an important meeting." I closed the book in front of me and placed it neatly with the other books, "Why would they go to the same meeting?" I took a seat on the bed while waiting for her reply. "It is regarding everything happening in the town, El." A slight sadness passed thinking how I did n

Old families

"I thought out of all the people you would trust me," I crossed my arms over my chest and started looking outside through the glass window to avoid Adam."El, I am just stating the truth. There was not enough light and after what happened in the forest you might have just imagined it," he said the last words slowly.I stared at him with a disapproving look.I started looking around to avoid him once again. We were sitting at the end of a cafe. Every corner seemed completely different. A plain center and artsy designs on either side of two walls was the first thing to catch the attention of a visitor. While the third wall had glass windows all over it.The last corner had plants and a small bookshelf, the tables had a wooden wall separating them."El, not looking at me won't make me disappear.""No, but apparently I have a great imagination so I am just imagining you are not here," I smiled at him. After what I witnessed last night I n

Warning

I knew so much but I had no evidence to prove my words. What could be worse than that? I kicked the pebble on the road thinking about my current situation and what I could do to change it. I gave a smile to a woman on my way who returned it with a small smile of her own that failed to reach her eyes. It was not only her, everyone was scared. The playground was not filled with the laughter of kids, the roads were empty, the cafes and restaurants were closed before darkness could take over the blue sky. "Ma'am, could you tell me this location?" a coarse voice asked me from behind. Thinking it might be someone who lost his way, "Sure," I answered before looking at him. I froze looking at the lean man wearing a thick brown jacket, baggy pants, and a beanie over his head. He had an uneven smile on his face that was covered in the beard. I put on a fake smile as well hiding my fear while clutching the keychain with a small knife in m

Perfect daughter

I was annoyed by the audacity of that man to leave me alone after throwing a bunch of warnings on my way.I kept taking heavy steps, mumbling curses, and how I would expose him in front of everyone. I was sure if anyone saw me at that moment, that person might think I was crazy, but it was a  good thing I already made sure no one was around. When I reached the front door, I put the keychain back in the bag and removed the credit card from the bag about which no one had any idea. I was already 18 and it was the money I earned by doing some jobs here and there.Grandpa might not be my favorite person but his constant taunts about me not being ready to face the real world worked as a motivation for me.Putting the card carefully in the pocket of my dress, I rolled my shoulders to correct my posture and opened the door slowly. When I didn't see anyone I started walking towards my room."Where were you?" my mother's voice stopped me before I could

Goodbye world

Slowly I looked at the voice.  A tall man with a lean figure was standing below the tree, staring at me with his head tilted slightly towards the left. It was not hard for me to recognize that brown jacket and the beanie.  The light peeking through the leaves was falling unevenly on his face. "No, I...I am with a friend," I tried to lie while keeping an eye on him. He gave a short laugh and scratched his beard with long dark nails. "A friend you say. Where is this friend?" My heart started beating faster as he took a step forward. "He is waiting for me and if I did not get there in five minutes he will come here with other people." He paused on his spot like he was thinking if I was telling him the truth or not. "You are lying," he finally said. I started thinking of every possible way to get out of there, "Wait here for five minutes and you will get the proof." He shook his he

Falling

Waiting for the burning sensation of his teeth sinking inside my flesh, I kept my eyes closed. After very long seconds which felt like hours, I opened my eyes as the pain I was preparing myself for never came. The sun was almost dipped behind the canopy of trees, which was now more clear. The faint light was coming towards my way but it was getting blocked by the masculine figure standing in front of me. I ran my eyes around the whole scene, I was near the exit but never noticed it because of my fear. The brown wolf was on the ground a few feet away with his fur covered in blood around the neck.I turned my gaze away from him quickly as I was almost sure he was dead from the amount of blood that was soaking the grass beneath him.I tried to look at the man standing in front of me like a statue without moving at all.The faint smell of familiar cologne entered my nostrils and I was instantly aware of the identit

The answer

Damien was standing still near the door, with hands in the pocket of his dark pants.I did not say anything and watched the girl place the plate of food on the table one more time."I said I am not hungry."Just then the loud growl from my stomach pierced through the silence of the room.Damien arched an eyebrow barely containing his laughter, "Sure."The girl stood next to the table with her head down."You can leave," Damien announced in a stern voice without looking at her.The girl left the room without saying another word or glancing in my direction.Damien pushed the chair for me to sit but I did not move from my place."I am not eating anything until you give me answers," I folded my arms."We can talk after you eat something.""Where am I? Does my family know about my whereabouts? How did that man turn into an animal and how did you kill it so easily?"Damien stood in front of me without sayi
