Prologue

A long, long time ago in a country in the far east, there lived a family of witches.  Their clan possessed supernatural powers like reating charms for resistance against magical attacks, concocting healing potions and most importantly, fortune-telling dreams. In spite of their skills, they were shunned and maligned so they were left to live at the outskirts of their village. Out of fear, the other villagers refused to trade or even to interact with them. Only the sick, the desperate and the chieftain would visit them.  But the head of the family, an old witch they called Inang, continued to serve the village faithfully by leaving protective spells around the village boundaries, scaring away the maligno and dealing with the other supernatural beings who lived in the forest

Chapter One: Enigma

Imogen Madrigal and Kieran Belmonte first met each other at a benefit dinner party for an impoverished orphanage in Metro Manila. It was a boring affair with rich and influential people as the main guests, classical music and vicious gossip in the background. They’ve been forced to attend because this was what the buena familias did to keep up appearances. She stood in the balcony at the edge of the ballroom of The Peninsula Manila in Makati, away from the crowd, as a vision of white lace and black curls.  Her expensive white lace eyelet dress accentuated her best features like her long legs and creamy skin. Long dark hair fell down to her back in carefree waves and framed her perfect oval face. Violet eyes glittered under a fringe of long, black lashes as she stared ou

Chapter Two: Fate

Kieran Belmonte had a lunch scheduled with his business partner in a lovely, cozy restaurant at the heart of the shopping district in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig. It was close to the office building they rented and they both knew the owner. They could count on a table that would be exclusively reserved for them anytime they came to eat. In spite of the infernal heat, Kieran was dressed in a smart-casual outfit of black slacks, white shirt and a green sweater. The deep, emerald green color of his sweater brought out the green flecks in his blue-gray eyes and set off his skin tone. More than a few ladies and gents had thrown admiring looks at him as he entered the restaurant.  The dark-haired young man took out his laptop to finish up some of his work.

Chapter Three: Isabel's News

Imogen’s next appointment was with her cousin and childhood best friend at a park in an exclusive, affluent neighborhood in Alabang. They haven’t seen each other in a couple of weeks which seemed like forever so she decided to pay them a visit.  In spite of herself, she was still thinking about that brave young man who tried to strike up a conversation with her during the long drive to Alabang from Makati. Even at the benefit party, he was charming and easy to talk to.  She mused that he might be one of those heirs to those large companies because he carried a laptop and ate in a trendy restaurant. He probably knew her but she didn’t know him at all. If he knew her then he knew her net worth so he was going

Chapter Four: Emma

Kieran Belmonte took a deep breath as he stood in front of the gate of a modest mansion in West Greenhills. He’d just gotten off the town car to pay a visit to his errant business partner. He had already wasted a lot of time today so he decided to make the most out of it. If Kieran couldn't find him through his personal assistant then he would most certainly find him with his beautiful, reliable wife. He rang the buzzer and was promptly let inside by a uniformed maid.  With a nod, he entered the fantastically decorated home and garden of the famous king of their high school . He’d advised his friend against spending too much on aesthetics but he was ignored. The gardens were like a miniature version of the fabulo

Chapter Five: Marriage Interview

It was another beautiful morning in Metro Manila but Imogen saw none of it. Their condominium unit in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) had the best view of the fashionable BGC High Street through the bulletproof one-way windows. All she saw was different shades of gray.  She shivered a little although they airconditioning of her home was climate-controlled. Trembling white hands tightened the sash of her luxurious mulberry silk dressing robe to cover her slight frame snugly. She always felt cold these days. It was obvious to everyone that she'd lost more weight so the petite woman looked thin and pale like a ghost. Even her Yaya Marie was worried about her. Imogen arrived at their modern dining room where her mother was having an Englis

Chapter Six: The Legacy

Imogen went straight to her bedroom after having breakfast with her mother with the manila envelope in hand.  It contained information about her blind date that she didn’t really need that. Though she had expertly expressed her enthusiasm for her mother's plans, her heart wasn't in it.  When she looked inside the envelope, she saw that her mother had already set up a “date” for her on Friday. It was as if Vivian had already known that she would cave in to her wishes.   Imogen wanted to laugh when she started to read the file while walking  because it looked like a curriculum vitae for all of its businesslike and professional description.  The file included his pedigree (his family was very old and noble), his wealth (he was extremely ric

Chapter Seven: Best Friends

Kieran was a part of the elite Student Council of his prestigious high school, Immaculate Heart Preparatory School. He was the vice president for three consecutive years until his high school graduation. That's where he met Tommy and Emma.  In his opinion, it was the best time of his life because he made plenty of connections (friends), experiments (business ventures) and positive karma points (debts of gratitude from his peers whom he saved from precarious situations.) After their rosy high school days, he still met up with his close friends for dinner. They held weekly dinner meetings in a charming French restaurant, Bon Sejour, in Greenhills every Saturday night.  Six handsome young men and one pretty young woman o

In spite of himself, he used his favorite cologne for additional confidence.  He was early by ten minutes because he was a gentleman. Of course, he wanted to be early so he could watch out for his blind date. The businessman reasoned to himself that he could still refuse politely if he didn't like what he saw. He liked being prepared. As soon as he was led to his table by a waiter, Kieran

Chapter Nine: We're Having A Nice Time

After their first date, they started to spend more time together over the next week. They realized that they suited each other quite well. Both of them liked the idea that they could do whatever they wanted, see whomever they wished or say whatever was running in their mind to the other person without fearing their reaction. Neither of them set any limits to each other as agreed upon on their first official meeting.  They could date other people, they could sleep around and they could end their connection anytime. Neither of them can be jealous or restrictive. If either of them wanted to see other people, they were free to do so.  That's the deal between the two of them.
