A long, long time ago in a country in the far east, there lived a family of witches.
Their clan possessed supernatural powers like reating charms for resistance against magical attacks, concocting healing potions and most importantly, fortune-telling dreams.
In spite of their skills, they were shunned and maligned so they were left to live at the outskirts of their village. Out of fear, the other villagers refused to trade or even to interact with them. Only the sick, the desperate and the chieftain would visit them.
But the head of the family, an old witch they called Inang, continued to serve the village faithfully by leaving protective spells around the village boundaries, scaring away the maligno and dealing with the other supernatural beings who lived in the forest so their people could continue to use the trees.
She made charms to ward off evil, potions to heal mysterious illnesses and brokered the peace between humans and monsters. All of the men and women in their small family knew how to do this and created a small trade in selling their charms and potions.
Their most famous and valuable skill that only Inang possessed was in dream fortune-telling. When she slept during the day, none of her family members could wake her. Sometimes she would sleep for days on end because the dreams held her in their grasp.
If Inang was dreaming, she could see the future that could save the village from war, famine and plague. She could save little children who suffered from nightmares and negotiate with the maligno who possessed helpless villagers.
Her powers were most powerful during the full moon and the dreams were so powerful and so frightening that she had to sleep in a different hut from the rest of the family. Only her favorite granddaughter could sleep next to her to write down and relay Inang's prophecies.
The next morning, she would give the bamboo to the village chief in exchange for his protection and favor.
The rest of the family didn’t like the discrimination and treatment that they received from the village so they kept grumbling under their breath.
Yet the matron refused to say anything but continued to keep the tiny village in the mountains safe.
“Inang, our Old Mother, I don’t think we should help them anymore. The harvest was bad and they never shared their rice with us. They never invited us to eat wild boar. We are never included when there are feasts,” her headstrong, willful granddaughter told her one day.
“This is our way and this is what we’ve done for a long time. The village gives us safety and protection. I am not a holy priestess but a witch, my child.” The matron answered her serenely.
“I want us to have more power, more influence and more secure standing in society.” The granddaughter declared loudly before she left the hut. I want more, more, more!
Her parents, siblings, innumerable aunts, uncles and cousins didn’t protest. She was their golden child and she possessed the greatest potential when it came to magic. She’d grown up knowing that she would inherit all of her grandmother’s powers upon her death and so she was spoiled rotten.
This beautiful, headstrong girl named Liwayway wanted her family to be the best in the land and the most powerful. She was named after the dawn so she wanted to bring in the new age and be the catalyst for change.
She imagined them living in large huts with tracts of land as far as the eye can see. She wanted her siblings to marry well and her relatives to be prosperous. It was unfair to her that they possessed such powers and skills but they could not use them to their advantage or to improve their status in the village.
In her young mind, she cannot achieve these things if they continued to live in the margins of society.
She was born to be a witch and she was ready to put her powers to the test.
Her grandmother merely watched her back grow smaller and smaller as she walked into the woods.
After thirteen nights and thirteen days, the granddaughter came back with a basket full of gold ingots, precious stones and a tall, handsome young man in tow.
Liwayway proudly declared him as her husband and her family accepted him whole-heartedly.
Her grandmother merely looked on and said nothing at her granddaughter’s return. She did not stop the family’s celebration of a small, intimate wedding in the mountains. She did not participate when they gave thanks to their gods.
When a large full moon came out of the heavens on Liwayway’s wedding night, the family whispered to themselves. See here! They whispered to each other. Mayari has blessed her wedding bed! She has given her favor!
Inang only drank water and ate no food from the wedding banquet. Her granddaughter’s husband caught her eye and winked. She pretended not to see.
Liwayway soon showed her power to her family as a witch. When she went out to the forest at dawn everyday, she came back with more gold and precious stones. She could point out where to harvest the sweetest fruits and to catch the plumpest boars.
She encouraged her father and uncles to bring these gifts of the earth to the village. In three months, they had filled up a hut with gold, jewels and other valuable objects. They’d built up a large granary and expanded their huts.
Liwayway told her family that it was only the beginning of their prosperity.
Soon, their family bought more land and started on their chosen trade. Their rice field yielded more than twice than the usual harvest and their groves of fruit trees were overflowing.
They grew rich in every season and every year so the other villagers started to respect them. Soon, they came in droves to seek marriages with their daughters and sons.
The old witch who was the head of the family died shortly after without speaking ever again to her favorite grandchild.
She already knew what her granddaughter had contracted a deal with a devil and she’d already seen the future. Oh! The visions and the consequences she'd seen. Liwayway had done the impossible and they would all pay the price.
The devil will always collect his due and nothing will be able to stop him.
Imogen Madrigal and Kieran Belmonte first met each other at a benefit dinner party for an impoverished orphanage in Metro Manila. It was a boring affair with rich and influential people as the main guests, classical music and vicious gossip in the background. They’ve been forced to attend because this was what the buena familias did to keep up appearances. She stood in the balcony at the edge of the ballroom of The Peninsula Manila in Makati, away from the crowd, as a vision of white lace and black curls. Her expensive white lace eyelet dress accentuated her best features like her long legs and creamy skin. Long dark hair fell down to her back in carefree waves and framed her perfect oval face. Violet eyes glittered under a fringe of long, black lashes as she stared ou
Kieran Belmonte had a lunch scheduled with his business partner in a lovely, cozy restaurant at the heart of the shopping district in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig. It was close to the office building they rented and they both knew the owner. They could count on a table that would be exclusively reserved for them anytime they came to eat. In spite of the infernal heat, Kieran was dressed in a smart-casual outfit of black slacks, white shirt and a green sweater. The deep, emerald green color of his sweater brought out the green flecks in his blue-gray eyes and set off his skin tone. More than a few ladies and gents had thrown admiring looks at him as he entered the restaurant. The dark-haired young man took out his laptop to finish up some of his work.
Imogen’s next appointment was with her cousin and childhood best friend at a park in an exclusive, affluent neighborhood in Alabang. They haven’t seen each other in a couple of weeks which seemed like forever so she decided to pay them a visit. In spite of herself, she was still thinking about that brave young man who tried to strike up a conversation with her during the long drive to Alabang from Makati. Even at the benefit party, he was charming and easy to talk to. She mused that he might be one of those heirs to those large companies because he carried a laptop and ate in a trendy restaurant. He probably knew her but she didn’t know him at all. If he knew her then he knew her net worth so he was going
Kieran Belmonte took a deep breath as he stood in front of the gate of a modest mansion in West Greenhills. He’d just gotten off the town car to pay a visit to his errant business partner. He had already wasted a lot of time today so he decided to make the most out of it. If Kieran couldn't find him through his personal assistant then he would most certainly find him with his beautiful, reliable wife. He rang the buzzer and was promptly let inside by a uniformed maid. With a nod, he entered the fantastically decorated home and garden of the famous king of their high school . He’d advised his friend against spending too much on aesthetics but he was ignored. The gardens were like a miniature version of the fabulo
It was another beautiful morning in Metro Manila but Imogen saw none of it. Their condominium unit in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) had the best view of the fashionable BGC High Street through the bulletproof one-way windows. All she saw was different shades of gray. She shivered a little although they airconditioning of her home was climate-controlled. Trembling white hands tightened the sash of her luxurious mulberry silk dressing robe to cover her slight frame snugly. She always felt cold these days. It was obvious to everyone that she'd lost more weight so the petite woman looked thin and pale like a ghost. Even her Yaya Marie was worried about her. Imogen arrived at their modern dining room where her mother was having an Englis
Imogen went straight to her bedroom after having breakfast with her mother with the manila envelope in hand. It contained information about her blind date that she didn’t really need that. Though she had expertly expressed her enthusiasm for her mother's plans, her heart wasn't in it. When she looked inside the envelope, she saw that her mother had already set up a “date” for her on Friday. It was as if Vivian had already known that she would cave in to her wishes. Imogen wanted to laugh when she started to read the file while walking because it looked like a curriculum vitae for all of its businesslike and professional description. The file included his pedigree (his family was very old and noble), his wealth (he was extremely ric
Kieran was a part of the elite Student Council of his prestigious high school, Immaculate Heart Preparatory School. He was the vice president for three consecutive years until his high school graduation. That's where he met Tommy and Emma. In his opinion, it was the best time of his life because he made plenty of connections (friends), experiments (business ventures) and positive karma points (debts of gratitude from his peers whom he saved from precarious situations.) After their rosy high school days, he still met up with his close friends for dinner. They held weekly dinner meetings in a charming French restaurant, Bon Sejour, in Greenhills every Saturday night. Six handsome young men and one pretty young woman o
The marriage interview was scheduled at four o'clock in the afternoon at a fancy hotel cafe in Shangri-La The Fort at Bonifacio Global City (BGC). Kieran was wearing an elegant navy jacket with a blue shirt under that matched his eyes and black slacks. He was also wearing his best Italian shoes. In spite of himself, he used his favorite cologne for additional confidence. He was early by ten minutes because he was a gentleman. Of course, he wanted to be early so he could watch out for his blind date. The businessman reasoned to himself that he could still refuse politely if he didn't like what he saw. He liked being prepared. As soon as he was led to his table by a waiter,Kieran
Imogen's stomach was full of butterflies as she entered Bon Sejour. Kieran had called her earlier that afternoon to ask her out to dinner. She immediately canceled her last meeting to accomodate his request and went home to get ready. Her skirt suit and heels were replaced with a lovely lavender A-line dress and wedge heels. She did her hair in a half-up and half-down style so her bangs and some tendrils of hair framed her oval face. She also swiped on a deeper shade of pink on her lips but kept her makeup as simple as possible. Although she was surprised that he was asking her out on a Monday, she didn't ask. She wanted to talk to him too. The waiter led her towards a corner table where he was waiting. Her eyes drank in the sight of her dinner companio
"Thanks for meeting me," Imogen said as she smiled at her best friend. The brown-haired young woman smiled back. "I didn't know what to do. I didn’t know who else to call, Isabel." After her conversation with her mother, she called her best friend almost immediately. They promptly scheduled lunch at Mary Grace in their favorite mall in Alabang two days after her arrival from Singapore to discuss everything that was happening to her and the disturbing dream that she had. They met in a small cafe that served delicious cakes and coffee. It was a Wednesday afternoon so the cafe was nearly empty. Imogen was nervous but she didn’t let it show. "I'm glad you called. How are you?" Isabel asked, looking worried.

"My darling witchling."Imogen sighed in her sleep as she rolled over to her side. The cold night breeze came in through the open window. Opaque white curtains fluttered as the devil came inside her room."Wake up, my darling."He walked with the darkness and shadows to his promised bride, his destiny. My pretty little darling witch. She lay on her bed of purple satin sheets and translucent white curtains in her four poster bed like a sleeping child. He marveled at her ethereal beauty with her pearlescent skin and crown of dark hair. Kieran had trouble remembering how they returned to her hotel room the next morning. It was a blur, even to him. They were both drunker than he thought.Kieran was a lightweight drinker but Imogen was quite used to drinking her way through a bar. It was amusing to think that a petite woman like her could hold her liquor and he couldn't. Anyway, he wasn't sure if it was because of the strong Scotch that he ordered or it was because of Imogen. All that he could remember in his drunken haze was that they had locked the door behind them and how he had roughly pushed her up against it. He couldn't get enough of her. What Kieran wanted was Imogen’s lips and neck. Her moans told him the same thing.
The whole world was filled with bright red roses or so it seemed to Imogen as she stepped inside the huge cathedral in Kieran's arm. She couldn't see his face in the glaring afternoon sunshine so she looked away. The dark king tucked her hand inside his arm more firmly as they walked inside the large, breathtaking Church of the Sacred Heart in Singapore. His warmth and solid figure beside her was enough to ground her to the saddest day of her life. Her date didn't say anything but his silence was golden. After the accidental meeting with Henry on Friday, they went out for the entire day of Saturday. They went to a zoo, a museum and to a film. Imogen took her camera along and took plenty of pictures of her handsome host to share with Isabel. Th
They arrived in Singapore Changi Airport that afternoon with plenty of time to spare. Imogen was laughing uproariously at one of his stories as they arrived at the hotel that he booked. He surprised her again by being an attentive host. There was no time to feel worried, nervous or even sad.All she felt was ease and contentment in his company. "We're here, sir." The driver announced as the car pulled over in front of the hotel. "Allow me," Kieran said gently. He opened the door for them since he was sitting on the side of the car that led to the street. He held out his hand and smiled down at her warmly. Blue-violet eyes drank in the towering sight of her new friend app
Imogen came home to an empty penthouse in BGC after having a late night coffee date with Kieran. She knew that Vivian was away this weekend so she had the house all to herself. So she went directly to her bedroom turned on the lights to her modern and minimalist bedroom decorated in warm beige tones. Her bedroom was her haven after a busy day at work so she designed it in a warm neutral tone like beige but accented it with autumn colors like sunset orange, teal blue, mustard yellow and emerald green. She had a wide four-poster California king bed with the softest sheets imaginable and silken pillowcases. On her rosewood bedside table sat two frames for a studio picture with her mother and another with Isabel and family. Imogen felt incredibly lonely at that
Tommy and his tightknit group of friends were early for their dinner reservation. They waited for the shadow king at Bon Sejour, their favorite French restaurant. Of course, they had the best table and the best service in the restaurant. All of the female patrons threw covetous looks every now and then towards their direction but they were so used to it that they didn't notice anymore. Tommy looked at his friends and sighed. "Why are you all here? I thought it was just dinner for four." "Don't be so jealous, Tommy," the Hernandez twins chorused. "You're not the only one he called." "That is true," Emma said agreeably. "Kieran wanted all of us to be here."
