Outside, the harmattan tore across the mansion, ruffling the plants in a circular garden, bending the leaves and branches of trees, coating the parked cars with dust. None of this seemed to matter to Christabel as she washed the dishes, her eyes were swollen with tears and the area around her right eye was the black-purple shade of an overripe avocado. She was smiling at Sarah jokes who was dramatising and gesturing with her hands to tell how funny the jokes were but one could instantly tell the smile was not genuine.
