Jane couldn’t believe it. Little Timmy was finally in her arms! We’re together now, she thought, bliss pulsated throughout her body. It had been only a day, but the separation from her new born felt like an eternity. Gently, she stroked kissed his forehead and a single tear, a happy tear appeared from the corner of her eyes. This was all so surreal. Agreeing to marry Daniel Winters was even more surreal. She couldn’t believe that either. Surely this was all a dream! Or a nightmare, a tiny voice whispered in her mind as the Wonderland Tower loomed into view before her very eyes. Wonderland Tower was one of Winters Architecture’s many exclusive apartments that catered to only the rich and famous and this was where Daniel Winters lived. The building stood out like a beacon in the dark with its exquisite architecture and towered over the luxury sedan as it rolled down the basement and into a very spacious private parking lot. The chauffe

Jane took a deep breath as she sank further into the plush cream coloured sofa and swallowed hard, going through the contract again. Her head was spinning, how could she agree to this? Clauses three to six were utterly ridiculous. This practically set women back by centuries! Cleaning the house? Be at his beck and call? Close an eye if and when he brought a woman back home to hump?Pffft! What is this? Medieval times? But she couldn’t argue with him, the man was her benefactor. She moistened her lips, placed the paper down and forced a smile.“How can I pay you back if I’m expected to wait on you hand and foot every single day?” she asked, hoping to be allowed to land a part-time job somewhere. The truth was, Jane did not mind having to clean the house, she felt that she should, given the fact that she would be staying at his residence for one year. But how on earth was she going to prepare herself for the eventual divorce if she

Daniel Winters spoke too soon. Everything was NOT alright. No sooner did he rest his weary head on his king-sized bed than a loud piercing howl tore across his penthouse. What the fuck?! He shot up from his bed, feeling the onset of a headache and rubbed his bloodshot eyes. Was it the apocalypse? Had end times come? He leapt from his bed and rushed out of his room in search of the source of the agonizing cry only to come to a screeching halt in the kitchen when he saw Jane holding a wailing baby in her arms. “Oh, I’m sorry. Did we wake you up?” Jane asked innocently as she rocked her little bundle in her arms. Beside her, the electric kettle started to boil and the sound of distant waves bubbling in a pool of lava could be heard. The throbbing of his head was getting borderline unbearable and the crackling sounds from the kitchen stove were not helping in any way. “What in the world?” he growled when suddenly, the whiff of buttery gri

By noon, half the country’s female population was heartbroken by the news that Daniel Winters had married the love of his life and even secretly fathered a baby boy. And Jane McKay was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Never had she ever faced so many journalists, all clamouring to get a piece of her. They wanted to know EVERYTHING about her - from her date of birth to the brand of dress she wore to the weight of baby Timmy. She wondered if Pa had seen the news and how he was feeling. Would he be shocked? Would he be even more ashamed? She hoped the prying neighbours would not go rapping at his door and bombarding him with questions like how they did when her pregnancy was made known nine months ago. “Go get food, and an Earl Grey, two lumps of sugar,” Daniel ordered Jane through gritted teeth as he flashed an award winning smile from the conference table and gave the journalists a regal wave. The press conference had just ended and Daniel was taking the opportuni

No sooner had Jane pushed past the massive lilac double door was she assaulted by an overly eager crowd of journalists. “Mrs Winters! Here!” Snap! Flash! Snap! “One for the camera Mrs Winters! Absolutely gorgeous!” More flashes of blinding light. Jane had to maneuver and dodge her way through the crowd all the while trying to balance the tray of food and cup of tea. By the time she reached the conference table, there was only half a cup of tea left. Some had splashed onto the carpeted floor, and a great volume had landed on Jane’s skirt and toweled hand but as she handed the cup to a scowling Daniel, his eyes fell on her hand. The scowl deepened even further. “What happened?” he snapped, his voice low enough so no one would hear him barking at her. Jane’s hand immediately dropped to her sides as soon as the plate of goodies was laid in front of him. The crowd went ‘awwww’ seeing how sweet the new wife was to her husband and continued snapping

Little Timmy was crying. It was a sound that broke every mother’s heart, but it was also a sound that made Daniel Winters want to break every china in his penthouse. The moment both he and Jane stepped through the elevator door to his penthouse, Pepper Potts came stumbling, her mousy hair looking even more unruly than usual. Her cat eyeglasses was also lopsided and spits of milk graced her usually polished attire. Granted, his secretary wasn’t the neatest of all his employees, but this was the first time he saw her looking like someone who had just clawed her way out of a crocodile-infested jungle.“Mrs Winters! Help! Little Timmy won’t sleep anymore..” she shouted in anguish and running up to Jane with flailing arms. “He’s just…just crying!”She grabbed both of Jane’s hands, oblivious that one of Jane’s hands had been scalded. From the corner of his eye, Daniel saw Jane wince slightly before she put on

The dinner at the Winters family’s colonial mansion felt more like a warzone than it did a family gathering. As she sat in the gigantic dome of a banqueting hall, Jane meekly raised her head from her shiny empty plate and her pulse raced as she took a peek at the sea of unfriendly faces that surrounded the long banqueting table. There were nearly ten pairs of eyes that roamed her face making Jane cringe and feeling her skin crawl under their scrutinizing stares.  The magnificence of the large cobalt blue and green stained windows and the fresh roses that surrounded the room did nothing to ease her nerves. A butler came up to her and placed a plate of caviar in front of her.“Thank you,” she mouthed to the haughty looking butler who seemed to have lost the ability to smile. On her left was Daniel, dressed immaculately in a simple but elegant white polo and a pair of dark blue jeans. He ignored everyone and dug into his food. And on her rig

They ended up at a retro diner not far from Daniel’s penthouse. Word had it that the chef had resigned from a five star Michelin restaurant in New York to realize his childhood dream. The place was tiny though, big enough for only eight patrons at a time and patrons usually had to book a month in advance to secure a reservation. But the owner of Mike’s Diner was an old friend of Daniel’s and the cheerful man welcomed the trio and baby Timmy with open arms. “Come! Come! Take a seat!” the bald chef in a black tank top ushered them in through the neon green swing doors and into a brightly lit eatery where a jukebox played to the groovy sound of music. “Leanne! Three double patties and chocolate milkshakes! Let’s fatten these kids up!” Baby Timmy started to cry and Daniel shot the chef a murderous look before storming over to the jukebox and yanking off the wires. The thing was too bloody loud! From the corner of his eyes, he saw Jane quickly fish

It had been an exhausting day and Jane was tired. She hadn’t been sleeping well the past few nights either. Granted, the bed was comfortable but this just wasn’t her house. Couple that with all the crazy happenings that had taken place, Jane was surprised she was still able to stand on her feet. A dull monotonous buzz began to sound in Jane’s left ear. She shut her eyes momentarily and tilted her head slightly to one side trying to will the buzzing sound to end. “Jane? Jane!” Her head snapped to attention at Daniel Winters’ voice. He was frowning at her. Why is he always frowning? she wondered. She wished he would smile a little, he looked much better when he smiled. She shifted little Timmy’s carrier and strained to hear what Daniel was saying. “I’m sorry, what did you say? My ear’s blocked,” she told him. As a child, Jane feared the ringing in her ears the most, for after the ringing would come a partial hearing loss, followed by ex

A FEW HOURS EARLIER. “Mr Winters, I simply cannot accept your terms. The price is too low!” a wrinkled hand slammed onto the large mahogany table in the meeting room of fifteen people. All around the table, everyone had their heads down. Save for one man at the head of the table.  Daniel Winters raised an eyebrow as he twirled his shiny metallic laser pen, calmly staring at the enraged man who was coughing slightly. Behind his black leather chair, sunlight streamed in through the glass walled meeting room, casting a warm sunny glow to the otherwise cold and tension filled meeting. “Mr Winters, do you take me for a fool? Your company is going to reap millions, if not billions from this project and yet you’re only offering me peanuts for the sale of MY land?!” the man slammed at the table again and Pepper Potts jumped in her seat. Daniel smirked, ignoring the look of terror on his PA’s face. “It’s because I’m NOT taking you for a fool that Winters
