Chapter 31 – Slowly

Whenever there’s a reason for her to let go of his hand, she did. Taking items off the shelf and putting them on the cart, she would distance herself from him. Conrad let her, but whenever her hands are idle, he would take one in his. This process repeated itself many times as they went around the grocery store. They lightly talked about ordinary things. He asked about the items she took, especially the food and snacks.“What do you normally eat at your place?” He noticed all the frozen food she grabbed. She shrugged before saying she eats at the restaurant and whatever’s in the cart. His lip twitched. These can’t be healthy. But then again, they’re wolves. They can even eat raw meat if they needed to.He began to ask her what living with humans are like. Even though he’d been here for a few weeks now, he hasn’t exactly interacted with many of them. Just a few, when he needed to. He mostly followed her around.“It’s fine. I don’t think there’s another wolf in this town. It was fairly

Chapter 32 – Found

She knew he almost lost control of his desire. She quickly entered her unit and locked it, too. Biting her lip, she recalled how he kissed her. A mix of gentleness and passion. Soon, her thoughts were flooded by memories of the nights they shared together. Groaning, she walked to her bed and threw her bag on the side.He was keeping his word to her. Not once did he mention the pack and going back. So far, at least. That night, her dreams were filled with their past. The happy memories she had.She was woken up by a voice in her head.Let’s eat breakfast together. I’m cooking. She frowned for a minute before realizing it was him. What are you cooking? She asked as she got up from the bed and stretching her limbs. She decided to take a shower first and change her clothes.Meat. Eggs. There’s soup. What do you want to eat? He replied almost instantly. Are you still cooking? I’ll be there in ten minutes.Yeah. Alright. Take your time. You just woke up, aren’t you?Yeah. Get out of my head

Chapter 33 – Journey

“Alright. Thank you, Landon.”“It’s no problem. Glad you’re both safe. And I’m sorry for the blunder. I’ll now call Alex and give him a talking to. Contact me if you need anything else.”“Got it. Thank you. Really.” Alice replied this time, seeing Conrad was deep in thought. After a couple of minutes, he asked her to check the map to Millcoast. Alice focused on the phone. She can do this much. They’re on the right track, at least. After that, she set aside his phone and hugged her bag. She was nodding off but she refused to succumb to sleep.“You should sleep. Get some rest, Alice.”She looked uncomfortable. “How could I? I should at least accompany you.”“You’re here. You’re accompanying me.”“Still…”“Later, I would probably sleep for a while. I’ll need you to keep watch of our surroundings, then. So, sleep, Alice. You’ll help me later if you do.”“Oh, okay.” When he explained it like that, she clearly understood the reasoning. He parked the vehicle for a moment to help her into a m

Chapter 34 – Calm

His body relaxed and she heard his sighs of relief.“Alice?” His voice was a whisper in the silent room.“Hmm, do you need anything?”The man didn’t reply and she continued to press on his back and arms. She sat on the bed and leaned on the headboard when she’s done. She’s very much awake and alert. She played with his hair until the doorbell rang. The food arrived and she paid for them. Huh, she didn’t think they would smell so good. After setting them on the little table, she stared at Conrad. They ate enough food earlier. Right now, he needs sleep more than food.Alice took a deep breath and ate alone. She kept her senses on alert, pausing every five minutes to listen to their surroundings. She’s tensed whenever new people approaches the place. After her meal, she went to clean up before joining him on the bed. She’s well-rested so she’s not sleepy at all. Pursing her lips, she tried not to think of their current situation but failed. They found them so fast and it was her fault. I

Chapter 35 – Unnatural

She laid next to him and it was as if he could sense her proximity. He reached out and moved closer to her. She felt helpless. She’s on the edge of the bed and they’re practically occupying half of it. She tried pushing him back little by little. She let herself doze off. It was uncomfortable but she made do with it. She would open her eyes whenever there’s much movement in the vicinity or too much noise. When he woke up, she also got up. But damn. She forgot about food.“Sorry. I’ll ask if they serve food.” She quickly looked for a phone but there was none. Huh.“I’ll go out for a bit.”His expression darkened. Conrad doesn’t like it when she’s out of his sight. She caught a glimpse of it and paused.“I’ll be quick. Or do you want to come with?”He took his wallet from his bag before joining her and holding her hand.“I hope they have food.” She stated as they walked towards the reception. She checked the time and was surprised to see it’s already early morning. The sun would rise in

Chapter 36 – Hybrid

“Or you can also try it on me?” He added after a while. Tomorrow can’t wait.Alice considered it and tried to look around. What can she ask him?“Can you get me my bag?” Her voice was her usual tone, though.Conrad frowned at her. “No, not like that. Remember earlier. It was an order, rather than a request. And you command it. You make them do what you say.”Alice couldn’t be sure, so she just decided to say what she said earlier.“Get lost. Leave me alone.” There’s conviction in her tone this time and he actually felt a shiver down his spine. It was a different kind of fear and it took him a moment to realize it. He did see something in her eyes, though. They looked scarlet for a second. But that wasn’t his focus.“Alice!” His voice was stern and she was clueless as to how he got angry.“What?”“Don’t tell me to l

Chapter 37 – Wounded

They arrived there at mid-day. They don’t know yet how long they’ll be staying, but Conrad paid enough for one week. They’ll decide then if they want to remain or to move on.It was a simple town, with more nature than houses. The nearest diner is a couple of kilometers away. There’s a wet market nearby where they can buy food supplies. The house was equipped with a kitchen and they’re allowed to cook. After resting for a while, they went out to buy what they needed. Oh, it’s good to have their own place again. When they returned, she urged him to rest as she prepared their dinner. She tried not to think about what they discussed last night or earlier in the day, but now… she couldn’t help it. As she waited for the water to boil and as she chopped the vegetables, her mind tried to recall what she knew about other species, particularly vampires. They’re not the only species to have red eyes. Even among wolves, some have them. There was even a pack which prides themselves in having dist

Chapter 38 – Regret

She was busy cooking food in the kitchen. Conrad was cleaning up the truck. It rained early in the morning and the grounds are muddy. Still, they went out to buy supplies. In the last two days, she asked him to teach her how to drive. It was one thing they’ve been busy with, occupying their time and attention. She was nervous at first, but as she got the hang of it, she realized it’s quite easy. She navigated the roads just fine, with no incident.“It’s different in crowded cities where people can walk on the main roads to cross. That’s when you need to be very observant and careful. I prefer driving at night because there are less vehicles and I can go with maximum speed. With our vision, darkness isn’t much of a concern.”She agreed with his sentiment. She practiced for hours until she felt more confident. She enjoyed the experience of learning how to drive. That night, Alice heard him call her name urgently. She became alert and turned off the stove before moving towards the door.

Chapter 39 – Realization

Even though it’s only two towns away, it still took her six hours of driving. She was too slow as she’s just a beginner. It’s different when he’s there to assist her and correct her mistakes. Right now, she’s not confident and was driving as fast as she could tolerate. She would probably run faster in her wolf form. But of course, she can’t run for as long as a vehicle is able. She checked the gas level, it’s good that they filled it up earlier. After a while, she would often glance at Conrad’s figure. He’s facing away from her so she couldn’t see his face.“Conrad?” She would sometimes call his name and when he grunts in reply, she’s assured that he’s still good. She tried hard to rein in her emotions. She needed to focus. One thing persisted in her mind, though. She wouldn’t be able to accept it if he died tonight. She wouldn’t feel worthy to have his sacrifice just to pro

Chapter 40 – Contemplation

When Conrad woke up, Alice was sleeping soundly next to him. Her snoozing sound was adorable to hear. Also, she’s holding his hand, careful not to touch him in her sleep. When he tried to move, he scrunched up his face from the pain that assaulted him. He lightly panted, which caused her to wake.“You awake? Do you need anything?” She swiftly sat up and looked at him.His throat was parched, though. Instead of speaking, he only managed a dry cough.“I’ll get you water.” She scrambled off the bed and returned with a glass. He grimaced as she propped him up on some pillows.“Sorry. Is it too painful?”He shook his head before drinking. He’s not used to this level of pain but he was prepared for it.“How are you?” His words amused her.“Better than you.” Her tone of reply made him smile. They stared at each other for a while before she aske
