Chapter 1: Size 9

I tried to open my eyes, but they won’t cooperate. I slept late last night because I was too excited for today. The loud ringtone of my phone filled my ears, and it made me get out of bed. Still, with my eyes closed, I reached it even though I don’t know where exactly it is. The call suddenly ended. I thought of going back to bed, but it rang again. “What do you want?” I said to whoever is trying to ruin my day. I heard a chuckle from the other line. “Still in your pajamas? Maybe you want to consider getting ready?” I glanced at the wall clock of my room and saw that’s it just seven in the morning. “I might want to go back to bed, Rueben,” I answered. “You can but-” “Hello?” I gave up as soon as I heard Sara’s voice. “Jael, do you know what time it is? Get up now and get ready! We have a lot of things to buy at the mall. We should be home before dinner,” she stopped for a while as if she said something w

Chapter 2: Kid

What a coincidence. Maybe her girlfriend and I have the same size? The sales lady he just asked to assist him entered the same door where the lady who asked for my size entered earlier. I sat down on the couch, and he did, too, at the sofa across me. When he removed his cap and ran his fingers through his hair, I heard the gasps of the other staff behind the counter. Wearing a black polo shirt and maong pants paired with white shoes, he looks young, but I’m not sure. He sat and looked so manly in front of me. I pursued my lips, preventing myself from smiling as I saw how the female staff gushed over him. I get that he’s handsome, but how can they be head over heels over a stranger? Unless he’s a regular customer? He suddenly lifts his face, and our eyes met. He looked at me with strange eyes, so I raised my eyebrow at him and looked away. He might assume I am checking him. Boys nowadays are very unpredictable. The sales lady who assist

Chapter 3: Saudade

I was running so fast to get to where my cousins are. I bumped into many persons, and I didn’t have the chance to say sorry because I was so nervous to the point I couldn’t breathe properly. Why is Abigail like that? What happened? The tips of my hair are pounding against my shoulder because of my high pony. From afar, I saw Aaron and Rueben waiting for me outside the car. They looked disturbed, and it made me scared even more. “W-what’s happening?” “Get inside now,” Rueben commanded. Aaron opened the door for me. Abigail is crying, and Sara immediately hugged me. “H-hey… what’s wrong? Why are y-you all being like this?!” No one’s answering me. I feel like I’m about to go crazy! “Drive now, David!” I started crying. Hana is comforting Abigail because she keeps on sobbing even though my cousins already told her to stop. They all rushed inside the house when the car stopped. Rueben held me because my knees

Chapter 4: Envelope

I stared blankly at the white wall. The silence is deafening. I sat here, lifeless, while everyone is praying and hoping that my parents will get through this. Even if it was unbearable to see, I looked back to see my parents. They're both lying on different beds with different machines attached to them. I could feel they're struggling. And it just pains me more to see them both there. Sara's not here. She couldn't even move when Uncle William fetch us earlier so we can rush here. She's too shocked to process everything right now. How ironic, right? She a nursing student, but she can’t even do something right now. Uncle Lucas is on his phone. He's been receiving endless phone calls since he got here. They're all asking about the accident and my parents' status. I bet those who called and will call do not really care about my parents. They’re just worried about the company being left alone because my family will consider this situation their to

Chapter 5: de Silvas

Abigail jumped to my bed. "Ugh! I'm so sleepy! I wish Uncle and Auntie would wake up soon..." I saw her enveloped herself with my comforter and closed her eyes. Instead of resting, I sat in front of my table and opened my laptop. "What are you doing? Didn't you ask me to go home so we could rest?" She asked in a sleepy tone. "I have things to finish," I answered shortly. I typed "Lucille de Silva" on my search engine and went to the images section. Rueben texted me this name out of the blue when we aren’t even on good terms. He said it’s the name of the woman who’s in the photos with our father. He’s not sure, but he had a hunch. "Is it related to your Youtube channel? Were there any comments about the accident of your parents? Because if they pester you about that, maybe you should take a break from uploading your covers." "They won’t, Abi,” I assured her. “My viewers saw them once, but I’m sure I did not menti

Chapter 6: Preparation

"Wow. He’s really not joking. I thought I had at least a year or a couple of months," I said to myself as I read the newly published article about the Valmonte Group. It's all about the inauguration of Rueben as the CEO of Valmonte Developments and Designs. My father's absence caused fear among the board members that Uncle Lucas and Uncle William might not accept the responsibility because they are both busy with the other companies. I thought when we talked about this on the car, it was just a shallow or temporary problem of the company. Seeing that they accelerated everything to be done as soon as possible, maybe my father’s absence was a significant loss to the group. Rueben has been training for a year or two now, so I guess he has learned something from Dad and our Uncles. He's bound to take over, though, with or without the accident. He wanted to run the family's business, unlike Sara, who wants to enter the medical field and, of course, unlike me, who

The lot that our grandparents bought is too big for the villa only, so Dad and my uncles had decided to put it to good use when they first got their positions in each company. Actually, the mansion's location is isolated from the other neighborhood and far from the city. They thought it's a good idea to purchase a land far from everyone to be relaxing and peaceful. If I took one of our cars and decided to drive a little farther, there's a waterfall that we could always run to. Not to mention the mountains that surround the area, too. In short, whenever we go here, this place can always be our escapade. I put on my earbuds and star

Chapter 8: Help

Because of the tears, my eyesight started to blur. I couldn't see anything, so I use my hand to wipe off the tears, but I forgot that I threw that guy some dirt with my hands, so it eventually went inside my eyes that just added to the pain. I cried louder and wished that Rueben and my cousins would be here anytime, but I cannot reach for my phone because my eyes hurt so much. Someone held my arm from behind and made me faced him. "Stop running away from me," he whispered, and I knew it's him again. His hand was firm, holding me to stop me from doing anything impulsive again. "W-what's that?" I asked because I still cannot fully open my eyes. I felt and heard water. That's when I knew that it was bottled water he was holding. He made me form my hands into a position where he could pour the water there, and I can use it to wash off the dirt from my eyes. I washed my entire face, and bits of my hair in front got wet and. While I'm still

Chapter 9: Inauguration

Everyone clapped when Uncle Lucas was called to the stage. I looked at Rueben, who's sitting beside me, and I didn't notice any signs of nervousness like he was prepared for this for a long time."Are you not nervous?" I asked him."No.""Why?" I asked again."What do you mean "why"? This is my company," he boasted. My face went blank. I can’t believe this man is actually my brother!"Good evening," Uncle Lucas started. All eyes went to him."Thank you to each and every one of you for being here with us tonight. We are able to welcome those of you who have been with us for a long time and those who are new to the family. Before we get started, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all of you who generously helped us make this event come together to become a success regardless of what happened to my beloved brother, Arthur, and his wife, Harriett."My eyes went down to my hands as I played with them. So

I received encouraging expressions, too, from my cousins, and I saw that they let Nami and the twins enter the room for them to watch me sing. When Aaron let go of my hand, I looked at him with pitiful eyes. I don't think I can perform in front of these rich and sophisticated persons. I walked towards Rueben to get my guitar from him. "You have to explain this when we got home," I warned him. "There are people here who knew someone in the music industry. I don't have to tell you to give your best. Just sing like you always do, Jael. Make it worth their stare," and then he smirked and left me alone on the stage. The lights went dim. I sat down on the stool at the center and placed my guita
