Chapter 71

The plan was for the interior team to have at least ten minutes to get into position and locate the Red Queen before the attacks started outside. Jo had glanced at the clock on her IAC as she’d started levitating toward the chimney. They should have about five minutes left before the shooting began. They rushed down a hallway, Dax, Ingrid, and Jo following behind Cassidy who was moving at such a rapid pace, the rest of them struggled to keep up, she doubted anyone would be able to see her as she flew past, even the Vampires, who should be able to track a lot better than a mere human. They had made it down two hallways, and Cassidy was about to turn down a third when their IACs came to life with activity outside. The exterior attacks had begun. “Shit!” Cassidy spat in Jo’s head. “So damn close!”Jo wanted to ask how close they were, but there was no time for that. A barrage of boots o

Chapter 72

The silver handcuffs fit well around wrists. Not so much around ankles, but they’d made it work. It hadn’t done anything to stop the screaming and cursing though. Jo’d ridden back to the makeshift headquarters with her eyes focused out the window, wishing that the cuffs were on the right person, and the one screaming at them to let her go right now was the Red Queen and not her aunt.At first, they’d thought Cassidy just needed a few moments, and then she’d regain the memory of at least who she was, if not everyone else right away. But after they’d forced her into one of the bedrooms at the house in the middle of Nowhere, Russia, she’d continued to scream that she’d been kidnapped for another hour until Scott had finally given her a shot of something to make her sleep. Brandon was hopeful that she’d be herself when she opened her eyes again, but Jo had her doubts. Whatever Holland had done to her, it

Chapter 73

“Did she tell you anything at all about your mom?” Ryker asked, his tone sounding more understanding than any she’d ever heard him use before.Jo looked at him for a moment before she shook her head. But then… that wasn’t exactly true, was it? “Only that she didn’t have anything to do with her disappearance. She claims it wasn’t her, that she’s just a figurehead, and that she’s trying to stay out of it. I don’t believe her, though.”“You don’t?” he asked, not necessarily implying that he thought she should believe her, only clarifying.Wondering if there’d been something in her response that gave away that she did sort of believe Holland, she considered what Holland had said and how she’d felt about it at the time, how she felt about it now. “She said someone else was pulling the strings. Called him the puppet m

Chapter 74

Jo and Cadon stepped out of the way as a flurry of longtime LIGHTS members from the US rushed to the door to greet Heather. There were hugs and cheek kisses all around, lots of questions about where she’d been, what she’d been doing, and why she’d been MIA, as well as plenty of comparisons to people’s parents. It wasn’t until Elliott said, “We searched half of Africa looking for you! Were we even on the right continent?” that some indication of what had become of Heather leaked out.“Africa?’ the blonde asked. “Hell, no. I ain’t been in Africa for years. Too damn bright down there.”“Bright?” Mandy, Elliott’s daughter, who clearly didn’t remember Heather and had a similar reaction to Jo’s when the cowgirl had declared she, “looked just like her mama,” questioned as she stood next to her dad, her arms folded beneath her bosom

Chapter 75

As large as the house was that Lucas had managed to find for them, it wasn’t difficult for Jo to find a room without an occupant, even though many of the Hunters were sleeping now that the hunt was over, and the meeting afterward had dismissed over an hour ago. She lay on her back staring up at the foreign ceiling, wondering if she should watch the video of the attack from the perspective of someone outside first or sleep first and watch later. It was tempting just to close her eyes and see if sleep would come, but she took a few minutes to go over Elliott’s recording from the attack to see if the Vampire’s reaction was as odd as she thought it had been, considering how quickly her own troops were able to get into the fortress. Her suspicions were right. The Vampires had broken much more quickly than expected. In fact, many of them seemed to run the moment they realized they had been infiltrated. If these were the troo

When her eyes flickered open, the room was much darker. A glance at the window, where thick curtains obscured much of the daylight, but not all of it, told her there was little to keep out at the present time, and that she had been asleep for much longer than she’d anticipated when she’d first sought out the room.Rolling over served to be more difficult than anticipated as well, mostly due to the arms around her waist. She had to assume she’d called him again, sent Zane another message in her sleep that had brought him here to lie next to her for no particular reason other than the fact that she’d asked him to, and he was never one to disappoint if he could help it.She hadn’t been fair to him recently, and she knew it. Thoughts of what she’d gotten herself into when she’d taken this assignment always left her stomach queasy, like she’d eaten bad deli meat or taken one too many turns on a

Chapter 77

“The way I see it, we’ve got three problems we’ve gotta solve, and only one of ‘em has to come first.”Jo tried to listen to what her uncle was telling her, but her mind was wandering back to what had just transpired with Zane a few hours ago. It was nearly the middle of the night again. This was the time she should’ve been sleeping, but she wasn’t. Instead, she was sitting in the same den where she’d had the conversation with Ryker earlier. He wasn’t present--probably fast asleep since he seemed to make a hell of a lot more sense most of the time than she did. Instead, she was joined by both of her uncles, Elliott having pried Brandon away from Cassidy’s bedside for a few moments, as well as Mikali, Mila, Cadon, Lucas, and Heather.“The first one we’ve got to solve is how to fix Cassidy,” Brandon said, getting a nod from his dad. Jo figured that was their fir

Chapter 78

Beginning of Volume 3: Queen Catcher   Waking to the sounds of screaming was nothing new, and yet, every time it happened, Jo McReynolds felt her heart leap into her throat. Like every other night for the past few weeks, she tossed the blankets off of her legs and headed for the door, wishing she could do something to help but knowing that she was running to her aunt’s aid not because she could actually be of use but because she was obligated to do so. That and because, whenever Cassidy started screaming like this, it scared the bejesus out of everyone, including Jo. Her legs carried her down the hallway of the house they’d borrowed from Lucas’s Souled Vampire friend, Adrian, who wasn’t even there to sleep in his own bed. He had volunteered to track Holland’s car when it left the castle in Poland during the last attack. Now, they had a good idea where the Vampire queen was hiding, but

Chapter 79

“I just don’t think this is a good idea,” Lucas was saying when Jo sat down with him to talk about her plan to take most of her squad back to the United States for a mission to save Jamie Joplin and the other Guardians being held captive by President Crimson Crotch and his asshole lackeys.“Why is that?” Jo asked. “I’ve already told you how important this is. We can’t let him execute our people.”“No, I understand that, believe me. I do. I know this Jamie you speak of. He was a friend to Eliza when few others were.” Lucas’s eyes went to Elliott. It was no secret that Elliott and Eliza had never gotten along, but then Lucas’s wife rarely got along with anyone. He refocused on Jo.  Elliott didn’t say a word. He certainly wouldn’t deny that he didn’t get along with

Chapter 80

“You just promised I could do somethin’ that’s damn near impossible, honey,” Heather said, her arms folded beneath her chest as she stared into Jo’s eyes, unblinking. “I can’t get Cassidy back that quickly. Hell, I’m not sure I can get her back at all.”“I know, Heather. And I’m sorry,” Jo assured her. “But I didn’t know what else to do. We have to help Jamie, and the only way Lucas would agree to it is if we took Cassidy with us. We can’t take her with us if she still doesn’t know who she is. So… you’ve got to fix her. And fix her fast.”Heather shook her head until her curls danced. “Nope, nope, nope. Ain’t gonna happen.”“I believe in you, Heather,” Jo said, knowing the
