Chapter 91

The Senate Office Building was a mess on the outside. Large chunks of mortar had fallen from between the bricks. That and litter from who knows where trashed the yard. Papers were strewn all over the place, as if the filing cabinets inside of the building had been left open with all the windows wide during a storm. The papers were wet and stuck to the ground and trees. It was an awful sight, but it also let Jo know that no one came around here much. No one of consequence anyway. If the Vampires were aware of this building having tunnels, surely they’d do a better job of keeping them guarded. One swift kick of a boot from Brandon, and the main door fell in, taking a chunk of rotten wood from the door jamb with it. “That was easy,” the Guardian mumbled.“It’s too bad getting into the other building isn’t that easy,” Scott

Chapter 92

The timer in Jo’s head was ticking. Margie said she was on in five minutes with the president, and she’d asked for five minutes after that, so that meant ten more excruciatingly long minutes until Jo could start her attack. She let the rest of the team know and saw the irritation on their faces as well. Everyone was ready to get on with this.“I just had a thought,” Cassidy said a few minutes into their wait. “We didn’t think I’d be able to reach Jamie or anyone else through my telepathy because the Vampires would be guarding against it, but now that our IACs are open, maybe we can get them that way.”“Their IACs will have their coordinates,” Jo said. “We can find them that way.”“Won’t t

Chapter 93

When the ten minutes were over, Jo checked in with Margie one more time. “We’re going in, unless you say otherwise,” Jo told her.“Go for it,” Margie said. “I’ve got Crimson Crotch’s attention.”Jo took a deep breath and then told Cassidy, “All right. You’re up.”Cassidy rolled her eyes. “I’m always up. I’ve been up this whole time. Who do you think is throwing the shield?”Not wanting to argue, Jo said, “All right. Well, you’re up again. Can you get us through this wall?”“Of course I can,” her aunt said.Through the IAC, Jo told Elliott and Heather. &ldqu

Chapter 94

As Jo approached the door at the end of the hallway, she noticed on the IAC that there was a lot of activity going on with the other team. The noise that Heather had made bringing the concrete wall down had alerted the Vampires that something was going on, and now, Elliott and the others were in the middle of a shoot out.  Jo wanted to go help them, but she realized that this might actually be a good thing for her own mission. If the Vampires were busy with Elliott’s squad, hers might be able to sneak in and find the prisoners. “Well, my negotiations are over,” Margie said in her head. “Crimson Crotch was alerted that there was a breach, and now he’s off.” “Copy,” Jo said. “That’s the other squad, though. Not us. We’re still undetected. For now.” She opened the

Chapter 95

“Can you tell us where we’re going?” Jo asked Cassidy as they sprinted down a hallway perpendicular to the one that they were supposed to be running to.“There’s a skylight in the president’s apartment,” she explained. “Talk about a stupid design. But I guess they figured no one would ever be able to fly over and drop a bomb through it. It’s probably that bulletproof glass, but it still seems dumb to put a skylight in the president’s home.”“He doesn’t live in the White House?” Jo asked.“No. That’s a facade. His real quarters are here.”Jo agreed with Cassidy that it was stupid to put a skylight in the presidents residence, but if it was true, she was glad that was the

Chapter 96

Floating was not something Jo liked to do. She didn’t even like flying in airplanes, so when her feet left the concrete of the rooftop she had been running on, it was unsettling to say the least. But she knew exactly what her aunt was doing the moment it happened, and all Jo could do was hold on for the ride. The three of them--Jo, Cassidy, and Scott--were all up in the air at the same time. Somehow, Cassidy managed to catch the bullets from the firing squad and turn them back around, shooting them back at those with the guns. Several of them hit their mark, knocking the shooters to the ground. The Vampires were running toward them, but the bubble of Jo’s powers around them wasn’t allowing any of the enemy's bullets to hit the trio.It wasn’t enough for Cassidy just to turn the bullets away f

Chapter 97

There was no attack. The Vampires must’ve known they’d be wasting their valuable resources trying to get the prisoners back, so they stayed put. President Crimson made an announcement to the country, telling them all about how the Australians, along with renegades from LIGHTS, had broken into the capitol and stolen away prisoners that the country had rightfully captured and charged with crimes against the state that required the death sentence. Across the nation, Vampires and their supporters rose up with outcries of injustice. It didn’t matter that most of the Vampire supporters were forced into swearing allegiance to President Crimson and his governmental thugs by threat of death. The state-owned television was full of news reports chronicling what had happened and requesting aid from other Vampire supporting nations to band together against Australia, to launch an attack on the continent while their forces were away in America. Chapter 98

“Ryker,” she said, holding her breath. He looked angry. But then… he always looked angry. “How are you?”“Fucking fantastic,” he said. “I love carrying shards of glass around in my face and chest. It saves space in the cabinets for all of the other dishes.”She couldn’t blame him for being upset, but then, it hadn’t been her fault that the runway was so short. “I’m really sorry about that,” she said, meaning it, even if she had nothing to do with it.Ryker looked at Zane like he had no business being there, so he said, “I’ll go on ahead,” and left her. Jo thanked him through the IAC, not because she particularly wanted to have the conversation Ryker was demanding of her but because she knew it would be better to ge

Chapter 99

Social gatherings had never been Jo’s thing. There was so much fake-ness to it. Being around a bunch of people, pretending to be happy, pretending to be interested in what they had to say, all of that was physically draining on her. It wasn’t that she was an introvert as much as she just hated other people in general, for the most part. When Jo left Ryker, she’d walked away with a growing pain in the pit of her stomach. She needed to talk to Margie about getting a plane and a pilot. It wasn’t the sort of conversation she liked to have. She didn’t like to ask for help. But she didn’t have a whole lot of choices at the moment. If she wanted to get her group back to Russia to continue to hunt down Holland, she had to have transportation. The fact that Margie had been the one to recommend the runway that wasn’t long enough wouldn’t be brought up as a reason

Chapter 100

Margie’s office was in a smaller tent not too far from the one where the rest of Jo’s team had gathered. Her desk was fairly tidy considering the change in plans that had happened only a couple of hours ago at the beginning of the attack. A few chairs sat around the desk, one of them askew, as if someone had jumped up quickly. Two cots were set up on either side of the bed in the corners. Jo had to wonder if Margie and Grant slept in separate beds, but that wasn't her business. And it wasn’t as if Guardians slept much anyway.“All right, Jo,” Margie said, offering Jo a chair. She didn’t really want to sit, and since Margie was leaning against her desk, she didn’t see the point. “How can I help you?”“Well, first of all, before I forget, do you happen to have any clothes that Cale can borrow that don&rs
