Chapter 121

The choppers from the Australian army were huge, plenty big enough to carry the whole team to California with everyone comfortably tucked into a seat, as opposed to the flight they’d taken from Russia to the United States where they’d had to sit in the haul on the floor. Looking out the window at the midwestern landscape morphing into the mountains could’ve been serene if Cadon didn’t have so many other things to think about. The flight wouldn’t be nearly as long as the last one they’d taken. It did give Cadon enough time to think about life in general. He would’ve almost rather had someone chatting in his ear the entire time than have to be alone with his own thoughts. He missed his parents. It wasn’t difficult for him to admit that, but he tried not to focus on it. He’d gotten used to the hole in his

Chapter 122

The tunnels seemed to wind on forever. So far, Jo had followed behind Christian without questioning where they were going or why, but she was beginning to wonder if maybe he was just leading them around in circles, trying to see exactly how long they would follow.Time was different inside of the portal. That was something Jo had been told for years. She didn’t quite understand what that meant until she was inside of the tunnel herself. It was impossible to keep track of how long they had been traveling. In some respects, it felt like only a few minutes. But in other ways, she thought it might’ve been hours. Maybe even a full day or more.“Where are we going?” Cassidy finally asked. It wasn’t a surprise to Jo that she was the one who asked first.Christian paused to shoot a monster. So

Chapter 123

The sound of single bullets being fired in a rhythmic pattern had Cadon’s heart in his throat as he sprinted down the hallway, looking for where the prisoners were being kept. To him, it sounded like the ping of assassins putting people down, execution-style.“I’ve got them!” Elliott shouted, and then, the gunfire was interrupted by a barrage of gunfire. Cadon recognized Elliott’s Barretta’s tone as it fired repeatedly. He was fast, and his aim was good. Hopefully, he took down enough of the Vampires and Assassins that no one else would be killed.Cadon was running in the direction from which the gunfire was coming, other members of his team behind him, when suddenly a body appeared in front of him. Dressed in black, with menacing sharp teeth exposed, the man had a savage look about him.

Chapter 124

There’d been a few times in Jo’s life when she would’ve been quite happy with having no sense of time. If she could've sped up some of her classes in school, or slowed down some of her vacations, that would’ve been nice. A longer time on the beach with her parents… that roller coaster she loved so much lasting for an hour instead of a few minutes… sitting atop a mountainside looking out at the valley below next to her dad…. Those were all experiences that she would’ve liked to slow down.Walking around in this tunnel with a crazy Guardian who was whistling some song she thought had to do with pirates on repeat was not an experience Jo wanted to hold onto for the rest of her life.“What are you even humming?” Jo finally asked Christian, hoping the annoyance in her voice wasn’t as obvious to him

Chapter 125

Dozens of people were running toward him at a fast pace, and Cadon wasn’t sure if all of them could see him in the dim light of the passageway. He also wasn’t a hundred percent sure that most of them were on his side and not Vampires. As they neared his position, he did the only thing that seemed to make sense and leaped up off of the catwalk, grabbing hold of a pipe sticking out from the ceiling. There wasn’t a lot of clearance, but he managed to pull himself out of the way as the frantic forms fled. As they ran beneath him, he saw that they were all freed prisoners. At least thirty people, maybe more, passed beneath him before Cadon let go and dropped back down onto the walkway outside of the cells. He had to imagine that all of the prisoners who had been in this area when Heather popped the locks were on their way to safety, but he ha

Chapter 126

“It’s her,” Jo said quietly, her eyes still closed. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Her mom’s IAC was working. Not well--but it was detectable. She’d been waiting over ten years to see that light in her mind, so seeing it now was almost impossible to believe. But it was there nevertheless.“What did you say, Jo?” Zane asked, his voice gentle as he touched her on the arm lightly.Jo’s eyes opened and she turned to look at him. “It’s her. My mom. I can see her IAC.”Zane’s expression seemed frozen for a few moments before he asked, “You can?”She nodded. “Yeah. I can.” Even with her eyes open, it was still there in he

Chapter 127

Everything hurt.Cadon opened his eyes, trying to remember what had happened and where he should be, but his head felt like it had been hit with a sledgehammer, his back was killing him, and his legs were on fire.A dust cloud circled around his head. He tried to lift it to see where the dust was coming from, but his head wasn’t too cooperative. Rather than struggling to look around, he lay it back on what felt like concrete and turned his head from side to side. Then it all came back to him. He’d been in an air duct in Alcatraz that had collapsed onto a catwalk, which had also collapsed, and now, looking straight up, it appeared that he was on the bottom floor of the prison. All around him were bent pieces of metal, silver flashing, and rusty railing.

Chapter 128

Putting pressure on Zane’s wounds didn’t seem to be doing anything but showing Jo how easy it was to get blood to spurt through her fingers. Scott was allegedly on the way, but with every passing second, Zane was getting paler and paler as the blood that was supposed to be in his face was leaking out all over the floor of the tunnel.“Jo,” he said, through gritted teeth. “I need to tell you something.”“No, you don’t,” she said dismissively. “You need to save all of your energy until Scott gets here. He’ll be able to fix you right up as soon as he gets his ass over here.”“Jo….” He tried again, and part of her thought maybe it would be a good idea to let him say whatever it was he felt compelled to get out. But she also knew that letting him tell her some mushy stuff about how he’d always loved her or how he wished nothing but the best for her would also give him no more r

Chapter 129

The boat arrived in San Francisco sooner than Cadon had anticipated. The little human boat captain had certainly been driving it as quickly as possible. He hoped whoever had arranged for the man’s payment had taken into consideration the great danger he’d been in. Even if the guy had insulted him by telling him he was a baby. After they disembarked, Cadon looked around for the transport vehicles that Margie had said would be there. She said she’d get them to an airport. After that, they’d be relying on locals to help them. Elliott and Jamie knew some people who would be able to get them home. That was what his understanding had been, anyway. But as they stood on the dock of the bay, watching the boat roll away on the tide, Cadon saw no one who even slightly resembled the Australian military headed their direction.“Well, what&rsquo

Chapter 130

The light at the end of the tunnel looked unattainable. Jo wasn’t sure how she would get down below the ground where the light seemed to be coming from. She wasn’t quite there yet, but the closer she got, the brighter the light was. It still didn’t look like an opening, though. At the edge of the light, Jo stopped and looked down at the ground. It looked just like the rest of the tunnel. The ground was black, sharp, rock, just like everything else around her, but it was also glowing. It didn’t make any sense. Lifting her foot, Jo kicked the black rock. It didn’t budge. It felt the same as the ground she was standing on. She thought maybe there was some particular place she could step that would cause the ground to open up. She moved forward, pressing her feet around the edge and t
