Chapter 51

Maggie            My hands trembled in my lap as I sat on the exam table waiting for the pack physician to return. Something was wrong, but I didn’t know what. Though I had done well to hide it, I hadn’t been able to shake the fatigue that cause Lucas to send me to the pack hospital a few weeks before. I didn’t want to worry him with the threat of the guild moving on his territory. He had already had one close call with an assassin, I didn’t need my health distracting him on patrol.            Though I hadn’t told Deven about the absence of his wolf gene, I knew stress wasn’t the source of my feeling unwell. The tension between Lucas and I at the reappearance of his mate had dissipated. We had returned to a comfortable routine, growing even closer than we had been before Selene showed up. Training with the pack left me feeling more confident, which m

Chapter 52

Daniel            “Aurora. To what do we owe the pleasure?” I grinned at the older she-wolf standing on my porch.            “This isn’t a social call Daniel.” She frowned. “Can I come in?”            Stepping back, I motioned for her to come inside. I had known Aurora since my days in the guild. She had been my handler as well as my daughter’s. We had been close enough that she attended my wedding to Abigail. One of the few members of the guild that I maintained contact with once I retired. It wasn’t unusual for her to pay us a visit, her and Abigail had become fast friends over the years. What was odd was her demeanor. In all the years I had known her, she had never visited my home on business.            “Aurora! I’m so glad

Chapter 53

Selene            Making my way to the pack hospital, my mind replayed the moment in Lucas’s office. He had forgiven me for breaking the bond, now I just needed him to give into our reforged connection. A plan formed in my mind as I strolled into Rory’s office.            “What’s got you so chipper?” She smiled at me from behind the stack of medical records on her desk. “Did you find a place?”            “Actually, I was thinking about tonight’s haze.”            “Oh?” She raised an eyebrow at me, folding her hands beneath her chin to indicate I had her full attention.            “I know I’ve been kind of dodgy about discussing the Lucas issue, but I’m hoping if I can

Chapter 54

We talked for hours, with me eventually shifting my position so that I was curled in his lap against his chest. I had never been so intimate with anyone, sharing with him my fondest childhood memories. Even though my attitude had changed toward our mate bond, it was the first time I truly understood how well we were matched. It made me wonder for a moment why I had fought against our bond in the first place.            Lucas stood from his seat, scooping me into his arms as he did, eliciting a giggle. Toying with his loosened tie, I looked into his eyes, plastering on my most innocent face.            “Whatever are you doing, Alpha?” I laughed.

Chapter 55

EJ            The alpha and the she-bitch Selene left me in the interrogation room. My hands and feet were shackled together with silver, connected to a chain bolted to the floor. If it wasn’t for the silver, I could have broken free. My wolf was too far out of reach thanks to the metal burning into my skin. I was as weak as an average human male. Still, I refused to give them the satisfaction of seeing me break. I sat back casually in the hard metal chair smirking at the door.            By the time another wolf waltzed into the room, my facial muscles were aching. He sneered down at me as he drew closer. It was obvious he thought I wasn’t worth his time.            “Time to strip.” He grunted. “Alpha’s orders.”            “And

Chapter 56

Lucas            Rustling sounds woke me and I rolled onto my side to see my mate digging through the dresser in the dark room. The clock on the desk showed it was just after three am, neither of us has slept very long.            “What are you doing?” I asked, almost afraid she would tell me she was leaving.            “I missed training yesterday. It wouldn’t look good for me to miss again today.” She whispered, pulling on one of my t-shirts before settling on the bed beside me. “I hope you don’t mind, I had to borrow your spare clothes. You destroyed mine.”            My eyes raked over her. My shirt swallowed her even more in her seated position. It was both sexy and adorable. I tugged the sleeve, pulling her against my ches

Chapter 57

I glared at the wolves crowded around my desk. Zane had brought Selene, Alistair, and Rory as commanded. Victoria had tagged along, eager to start some new assignment she had been given by my mate. I wanted answers. There was a reason that Maggie had fled the safety of the pack with her children and I suspected one of the three I had summoned knew what it was.            “So, are we not going to address the elephant in the room here or what?” Rory spoke first after I had finished explaining why I had summoned them. “Seems to me there’s only one reason for a she-wolf in a cushy position to suddenly up and run. How do we know she wasn’t a spy?”            In one smooth motion, I sent my desk flying into the wall, removing the only thing that separated

Chapter 58

Victoria             “Stay back a minute if you don’t mind, Vic” Selene called as she dismissed our small group from training.            “Everything good?” I asked.            “Perfect actually. I think its time for you to lose the training wheels. Well, most of them.” She chuckled. “I’m giving you an assignment. You won’t be attending the pack training going forward. Starting tomorrow, I’m placing you as the Alpha’s assistant.”            “I’m not sure I understand.” I frowned. “I thought I was doing well with your specialized training.”            &ldq

Chapter 59

Rory woke me with a gentle shake. The smile on her face told me I was in for some trouble as her test subject.            “You slept through lunch. That Dramamine really knocked you out.” She chuckled, handing me a tray of food from the hospital cafeteria. “Eat up. I’m all done with the serum and I want to test it out.”            I ate slowly, the mischievous grin Rory was giving me leaving me nervous. I knew she wouldn’t do anything to cause me harm, but I didn’t care for the idea of being a science experiment. Her grin grew even wider when I realized I couldn’t drag out my meal any further. She picked up two vials from the counter beside her and waved them in the air.         &

Chapter 60

Selene            I left Lucas’s office feeling conflicted. His reaction to Rory questioning whether Maggie was a spy had rattled me. Part of me was thrilled with the she-wolf’s disappearance, but a small voice in the back of my mind wondered if his feelings for her were stronger than the mate bond between us.            “The Alpha is a busy man!” Gerdie’s voice floated down the hall as I rounded the last corner toward the pack house lobby. “I can’t just interrupt his meeting for refugees.”            “What seems to be the prob – Momma?” I gasped.            My mother, brother, his mate, and children, stood crowded around the receptionist desk. It was clear from their faces that my mother had been demanding to have her way for s
