Chapter 21

“I brought you lunch!” Maggie smiled as she waltzed into my office, Tupperware in hand. “I figured you’d be too busy to eat with processing all the refugees in the territory.”            I motioned for her to take the seat across from me and join me. She had let me wallow in my grief for another week after I returned home before insisting I return to my duties as Alpha. Zane had been insanely grateful to her for getting me back to work. There was a long list of rogues fleeing Cerathe seeking membership in my pack and he couldn’t induct them. That was something only the Alpha could do. With the monthly haze rapidly approaching, it became more important then ever to get them settled in as members. The haze not only made wolves seek out sexual conquests, but

Chapter 22

EJI watched in silent satisfaction as Selene’s body contracted as the electricity flowed through it. Her heart had already stopped, but I chose to leave the live wire tangled in the ladder rather than cut the power. The bug I had planted in Rory’s office had captured enough for me to know that she would be arriving soon. The longer I left Selene at the mercy of the electric current, the less likely the medic would be able to revive her.            I should have been surprised at her not putting up a fight, but I had discovered that the Alpha my uncle had tasked me with killing was her mate. After I left the medic’s office, I made my way to stake out Selene’s parent’s house. She had been sloppy, letting herself relax in her family home rather than be on

Chapter 23

LucasI considered the older wolf sitting across from me. I had been so rushed during the intake of the rogue refugees before the haze that he hadn’t caught my attention. His meeting request had gone unfulfilled for over two weeks after the mass induction. I had been overloaded with settling the new members into the pack in the aftermath of the haze, as well as recovering from the battering I had taken when Hades tried to break free from the cells.            “I need to speak with Selene, urgently.” He said, an aura of power flowing through his words. “When she didn’t return my calls, I assumed she must be here, with you. You are her mate after all.”  &

Chapter 24

Rory             The construction site was quiet as I pulled up beside Selene’s car. I glanced at the clock on my dashboard, wondering for a moment if I was late, but it displayed ‘7:59’. I was on time. Selene had a penchant for being early to everything.“That girl is going to be early to her own funeral.” I chuckled to myself as I slung my medical bag over my shoulder, grabbing my battery-operated lantern and the portable defibrillator.  I quickly made my way to the door of the building. The scent of burning hair and sea

Chapter 25

Selene             It hurt to breathe. Every part of me was filled with a blinding pain. Raina was quiet, I wasn’t sure if I had lost her or if she was focused on healing us. I heard light movements beside me just before there was a light stinging sensation in my arm. I felt my body relax as pain medication began to ease my pain. I forced my eyes open against the drug induced heaviness of my eyelids.            “Good, you’re awake!” Rory cheered.            I le

Rory“You’re healing nicely. At a human rate, but the wound is still closing as well as I would expect.” I told Selene, placing a new bandage over the stitches in her abdomen. “Has your wolf spoken to you yet? I know it’s only been a couple weeks.”            “No. Raina is quiet still. If it weren’t for you assuring me she’s working hard on my insides, I would think I lost her.” Selene frowned.            “We need to discuss the haze. I’m not sure how it’s going to impact you with your wolf being silent, but I don’t think we can risk it with you in the co

Chapter 27

Selene             Rory and I spent the morning bickering. She was convinced she had been visited by the moon goddess.  I was convinced her subconscious had pieced all the information we had together, and she had imaged the visit. The goddess was a legend our kind sold ourselves to explain away what science couldn’t understand. If she were real, she never would have given me a mate to begin with.            Around lunch time, Stephanie came upstairs from her clinic with a prepaid phone in hand. She had agreed to grab one for Rory so we could contact my father. The only thing we had

EJ             “Hello cousin!” Ava smiled, linking her arm through mine. “Are you here to see my father?”            “He sent me a summons.” I replied flatly.            “Daddy is in quite the mood today.” She whispered conspiratorially. “Something about the men not following orders.”         &nbs

Selene            The words had barely left Landon’s lips when we heard Stephanie’s voice floating toward the doorway.            “Miss! You can’t go up there. That is my personal residence!” She called out as footsteps began to sound on the steps. “It’s off limits to patients!”   &nb

Chapter 30

Lucas             My hands shook as I stared at the door in disbelief. Even through the hard wood, I could smell the familiar scent of apples and cinnamon. If it hadn’t been for the shattering sound of dishware breaking in the kitchen, I would have been certain my imagination was playing tricks on me. Maggie had heard me call out; my voice having mingled with Hades’ own when we uttered the word mate. My heart pounded in my chest, the sound covering the movement behind me.            “You should open the door.” Maggie whispered, startling me. “There has never been a recorded incident of second chance ma
