Chapter Forty One

CHAPTER FORTY ONE Sunday, 6th March 2016 My gaze flickered between the two men. “Y-you’re t-twins?” I stuttered. “Oh yes, we get that reaction often. You will eventually get used to it.” Simon took my hand in his and shook it. “It’s nice to meet you in a more aware, less drunk state. I am Simon Jacobs, Chief Operating Officer of Legacy Real Estate, the COO for short.” What? He had seen me drunk! Even worse, I couldn’t recall most of last night. I pulled my hand out of his grasp and stood with as much dignity I could muster. “I… I have to go now. Sorry to have bothered you. I just wanted to thank you for the food.” “Don’t you have questions?” He frowned. “Isn’t that why you came here?” “I guess I will have to postpone them to another time.” I hurried out of the apartment and ran down the stairs to mine. A lady was standing in front of my door. She was petite and dark-skinned with low-cut hair. She looked up as I approached. “Oh, there you are. You look much better than last n

“Are you alright?” I couldn’t even respond. I was too humiliated. I looked up at the owner of the voice. Mr Jacobs, well, one of them. I wasn’t sure if it was Daniel or Simon. He wore a black sleeveless hoodie and a black pair of sweatpants. “What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be resting at home.” His voice was firm, scolding. Hmm… it might be Daniel. He was certainly bossy. As he spoke, a gym staff ran over with a mop and bucket. Other people in the gym glanced at me with looks of pity and disgust. “Don’t take it out on her,” Lizzie had stepped off her treadmill by then and stood before him. “It was my idea for us to exercise. Um, by the way, I believe we met yesterday in front of Eniola’s apartment.” “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He glanced at her briefly and looked at me. “Get up, I am taking you home.” I tried to get up but stumbled. He grabbed me by the arm and led me out of the gym. “But Lizzie…” “Your friend will be fine.” He led me to his car an

Chapter Forty Three

Monday, 7th March 2016There were less than two weeks to Akin’s wedding and I just knew I couldn’t face it. How would I react? There would be so many people just waiting for me to break down. Even worse, they would talk if I tried to skip it altogether.I sighed and rolled my pen between my fingers. My family used to be good friends with Akin's family before this mess of a relationship. We even attended the same church but it was impossible to ignore the tension between us now.Was it by force to go? But I also didn't want to seem like a coward and it could be a way to end the rift between our families. Seeing Akin married, might also give me the closure I needed to move on with my life.I was just going to have to do it.I sighed and pushed aside the document I was proofreading. I had to learn how to separate my personal life from work. I mean, my boss was a perfect example. We had cooked a meal together just the previous day and I could have sworn the look in his eyes meant a whole

Chapter Forty Four

“This isn’t the time or place, Daniel,” Simon rolled his eyes at his brother.“Yes,” I whispered. The two men turned their attention to me.“Yes, I have.”“Are we seriously doing this right now?” Simon threw his hands in the air. “When you’re ready to talk business, let me know. I will be in the kitchen expressing my love… for food.”Daniel and I pretty much ignored him as he left us in the sitting room.“Can you tell me what happened?”“His name is Akin, he cheated on me and he’s getting married to someone else this month. That pretty much sums it up.”“I’m so sorry.”“Why are you apologizing? You didn’t do anything wrong.”“You don’t deserve that.”“Well, maybe it was a wake up call that I needed.”“This wedding, is that the one you were discussing on the stairs back then when we bumped into each other.”“Oh, yes. That’s the one.”“I heard clearly that you were looking for a date. Have you found one yet?”“Um… it’s a work in progress.”“You can reconsider my offer if it isn’t too la

Chapter Forty Five

Monday, 14th March 2016The following week brought about a flurry of activity within the company. Representatives of each company involved in the Abuja resort project arrived before noon. I was running around doing last minute checks on everything necessary along with other employees when a voice stopped me in my tracks.“Hello Eniola,” he said enthusiastically.I turned around to face him.“Oh,” I said quietly as recognition set in. “Good morning, sir.”I didn’t realize we were on a first name basis. I discreetly looked around for Mr John Philip’s father. The older man, Senator Philip, made me feel more comfortable for some reason, unlike his son who stood before me.“No need to be so formal, I'm glad I ran into you before the meeting started. It was a pleasure meeting you in Abuja.”Too bad I couldn't reciprocate the sentiment. When he tried to prolong the conversation, I deftly manoeuvred my way out of it with a winning smile and convincing excuse but I felt his gaze follow me ev

Tuesday, 15th March 2016Lara had booked an evening spa session for us after work. I was glad I came after all because it had been ages since I gave myself a treat.“I feel like I rarely see you anymore,” Lara said as the two of us leaned back in the soft, comfortable recliners at a popular spa in Ikeja. We were dressed in fluffy white robes as two ladies gave us a pedicure.“I know what you mean,” I sighed as I relaxed deeper into the recliner.Unlike before, there were no frequent spontaneous visits to chat about the recent events in our lives. Our only communication was via phone for a while now.“So, how is the new place treating you, what are the neighbours like?”I hummed thoughtfully for a few moments.“It’s good so far. I only know a few neighbours though, like a lady named Lizzie. Although, she suddenly travelled and I am not sure when she will return. I am not sure how to explain it but sometimes, living there makes me feel… I don't know… indebted to my boss. He never mentio

Chapter Forty Seven

Thursday, 17th March 2016I stayed wary of my boss for the next few days. Something about his previous rebuke had caused such a deep feeling of hurt, I just couldn't understand it.They were just words. I kept reminding myself to no avail.I realised then that, his opinion of me mattered… a lot. I was uncomfortable and unsettled whenever there was friction between us like back in Abuja. There was a knock on my office door and I called for the person to come in without looking up. I expected it to be Melody or Bayo. It turned out to be Simon, Daniel’s brother."You don't look too pleased to see me," he chuckled."No, no it's not like that. You're welcome, I just wasn't expecting you.""Well, I decided to stop by after seeing Daniel."My expression dropped a notch when he mentioned his brother. "I'm sure he must have told you about cancelling the contract?"I sighed as I remembered how very eloquently he had put it."Yes but, it all seems very strange to me."He nodded."Yes it seemed

Why on earth did I agree to this? I lamented silently as I sat across from my newly acquired acquaintance, Chukwudi. Chuks, as he liked to be called. He was a fair-complexioned man with a serious deficiency in height, not judging or anything, but I would’ve liked a heads up before I wore stiletto heels for the outing. His beady eyes stared with an intense look, as if he was peering under my skin.I smiled politely at him before I turned an accusing glare at Lara who sat to my right. She winked at me and gave an encouraging smile. I rolled my eyes in return.Chuks seemed to be quite…smitten by me… unfortunately. He discreetly slid a piece of paper across the table and I took it in confusion. Why didn’t he just speak? How about we ditch the others and go somewhere private? Just you and me, obim.Despite the term of endearment he tacked on at the end, it held no appeal for me. I looked up to see him smiling lewdly at me. His eyes boldly roamed the length of my body. I gasped in disbelie

Chapter Forty Nine

Saturday, 26th March 2016The day of Akin’s wedding had arrived and I was in panic mode. What was I thinking when I agreed to attend his wedding? Could I still skip it or was it too late to feign a terrible illness? The previous day, Lara, Hadiza, Sarah and I had gone out for some beauty treatment and returned with new hairdos, pretty manicures, pedicures and glowing skin. The girls had also helped me find a pretty dress to wear. But there I was, pacing my bedroom floor at 3am in the morning with all that aftermath of beauty.I didn't even have a date. I hoped that I would not have to fall back on Chuks, but I sent him running out of the restaurant, I was sure he wasn't too happy with me. I collapsed unto the bed and didn't even know when I finally drifted off to sleep.“Ugh….” I muttered as I grabbed my phone which had been ringing persistently. I put it up to my ear lazily.“Hello…?” I yawned.“Eniola, are you still sleeping?” Lara's voice resounded in my ears, sending shock waves

When we arrived, his hand settled lightly on my lower back as we approached the doors. Once again, I waited to observe my reaction to his gesture. I was pleasantly surprised to realize that there was no aversion, in fact it was the opposite. Bassey had managed to make me feel comfortable with him in less than 3 hours of us meeting.“Are you alright?” He glanced at me with concern.“Yes, I'm fine.” I replied with a reassuring smile.Just wondering where you’ve been all my life? The ceremony had begun by the time we arrived and I couldn't be more glad that I wouldn’t have to stay for longer than necessary. After all, the later we arrived, the less time we would have to spend. We were ushered to a table where many people sat but I didn't recognise most of them.I assumed they were friends of the bride. They could also have been friends Akin had that I wasn’t aware of but I knew most of his friends, so I doubted that. I saw familiar faces at nearby tables and boy, did they looked shocked
