Chapter 5

Our company was located in a remote industrial development zone. After 7:00 pm, it was rare to see anyone walking around the factory buildings.

Joaquin took the only car at home. I didn't know how to ride an electric bike, so I had to commute by bicycle every day.

I had begged him to pick me up from work, but he always refused with various excuses. He would say he was too busy with work or that he got off earlier than I did and had to go home to cook. One way or another, he just didn't have time to pick me up from work.

When I asked if he could lend me the car, he was about to make an excuse when Giselle called.

I overheard him promising over the phone, "Don't worry. I'll pick you up every day."
