My husband, Joaquin Landon, is a renowned wax sculptor. He hangs up on me when I call him to save my life so he can focus on the wax sculpture his cousin wants. Amphetamine is injected into my system, so my mind is clear as I watch my nails get removed one by one. Every inch of my skin is covered in burning hot wax. My hair and lashes are plucked off, and my organs are ground. Steel pipes are inserted into my legs, and I'm turned into a wax sculpture. Joaquin sees me during an exhibition. His colleague tells him that the wax sculpture he sees looks eerily like me, but he merely looks disgusted. "All she does is cause trouble and act unreasonably. She's better off dead." What he doesn't know is that I already am. Joaquin doesn't recognize that I'm the wax sculpture before him.

Chapter 1

Joaquin Landon was a widely renowned expert in wax sculpting. To prepare for a competition, he visited exhibitions for inspiration. A female wax figure in a corner caught his attention. It looked so lifelike—almost as if it were truly alive. Under the smooth surface of the wax, faint bluish-purple veins showed through, and subtle fingerprints were even visible on the figure. This startled Joaquin, who took two steps back immediately. He noticed an unsettling familiarity in the wax figure's chestnut eyes. He immediately pulled out his phone and dialed the phone number of his cousin, Giselle Landon. The monotonous dial tone looped for a long time before she finally answered. Joaquin breathed a sigh of relief. Still, the urgency in his voice was evident. "Gigi, where are you?" "What's wrong, Joaquin? Did something happen?" "No, it's nothing serious... I just wanted to confirm something." "Oh, you missed me..." Giselle trailed off the last word playfully, like she was acting c

Chapter 2

"Joaquin, I bought tickets! Didn't Serena keep asking you to take her to the beach? Since it's the Independence Day holiday, let's all go together. Oh yeah! We should take Uncle Wayne and Aunt Bethany too. That way, they'll get to relax for a bit," Giselle chirped.Joaquin's expression soured instantly. "Why take that troublemaker? Hasn't she caused enough problems? Just seeing her annoys me. I wish she was dead.""But I already bought the tickets… Joaquin, you know how rare it is for us to get a break in this line of work." Giselle's voice took on a tearful tone."I'll go with you," Joaquin replied.Giselle cheered immediately over the phone. She excitedly listed off all the seafood she wanted to try. Joaquin listened with a smile and said indulgently, "Alright, alright, we'll try everything."A month ago, I said the same thing to him. My birthday was approaching, so I begged him to take me—someone who grew up inland—to see the ocean and to taste the seafood I only ever saw in

Chapter 3

Bethany heard Giselle urging Joaquin to board the plane. Her voice shot up an octave as she spoke furiously. "I can't believe you're with Giselle! Didn't I tell you to stop contacting her?"And where's Serena? It's the Independence Day holiday. Instead of being with your wife, you're going on a trip with Giselle?"When Giselle heard Bethany over the phone, she stared back at Joaquin with a pitiful expression. Joaquin lowered his voice hastily. "So, Serena is allowed to go to the beach by herself, yet we can't do the same? Mom, I don't understand why you've disliked Giselle all these years. She's helped you—" He cut himself off abruptly and added, "They've started boarding for our flight. I'll talk to you when I get back. Let me know if you need money."Giselle pulled Joaquin along onto the plane. As they boarded, she grumbled about how he shouldn't have spoken to Bethany that way."It's normal for Aunt Bethany not to like me, considering how reckless I used to be with my words,

Chapter 4

"That's impossible! What kind of joke is this? Serena is at the beach right now, enjoying the sea breeze and eating seafood!" Joaquin roared in denial."We understand how you must feel right now, but Ms. Watkins was Mr. Dodson's assistant. The data of her iris was in the earliest records from the tests their company ran."Furthermore, both Ms. Dodson and your colleague confirmed that the female corpse resembles your wife. If you feel it's necessary, we can arrange for the medical examiner to conduct a more in-depth autopsy."Suddenly, Joaquin retched and vomited all over the floor. I guessed he remembered the corpse on the autopsy table, with its exposed bone and bloody flesh. He recalled how the skin was peeled back and how the wax mixed with blood dripped everywhere."Well, sorry for making you sick even in my death," I thought sarcastically. After hanging up, Joaquin rushed to the autopsy room but was stopped at the entrance."We're sorry, Mr. Landon. Because of your involveme

Chapter 5

Our company was located in a remote industrial development zone. After 7:00 pm, it was rare to see anyone walking around the factory buildings. Joaquin took the only car at home. I didn't know how to ride an electric bike, so I had to commute by bicycle every day.I had begged him to pick me up from work, but he always refused with various excuses. He would say he was too busy with work or that he got off earlier than I did and had to go home to cook. One way or another, he just didn't have time to pick me up from work. When I asked if he could lend me the car, he was about to make an excuse when Giselle called.I overheard him promising over the phone, "Don't worry. I'll pick you up every day."The hospital where Giselle worked was just across the street from our neighborhood. It barely took any time at all to get there. Frustrated, I argued with him about this. "You're already married, but Gigi is still young and single. What if some creep goes after her and harms her? How wo

Chapter 6

Joaquin was questioned about the details surrounding my disappearance. He couldn't give any answers. During the time I was missing, he was too busy creating a wax figure for his beloved cousin, Giselle. He had it in his mind that I was just throwing a tantrum and purposely went missing to make him worry. Needless to say, Joaquin never once considered the possibility that I might already be dead. When he came out of the interrogation room, he seemed to be pensive. I knew he must have thought of someone—his former neighbor, Yannis Orwell.Back in the day, Joaquin's family, Giselle's family, and Yannis all lived together in a public housing complex. Yannis was a wax sculptor who was quiet and lived a life of solitude. He lived in a small unit at the back of the complex. Though all the kids were curious, none dared to venture into Yannis' yard alone because it was filled with eerie wax figures.Giselle was the only one who dared to go in.She discovered that her bravery earned he

When Joaquin stepped out, he saw Giselle. He asked, "What are you doing here?""I heard something happened to Serena, so I rushed over. Are you okay, Joaquin? Did they give you a hard time in there when they interrogated you?" Giselle inquired with concern.Joaquin froze and slowly looked up at her. "Who told you that the police suspect me? And how did you know something bad happened to Serena? Also, how did you know I'm here?"Of the two people who knew what happened to Serena, Carter didn't know Giselle, and neither did Joaquin's colleague.Giselle was taken aback by the questions. A flicker of apprehension flashed in her eyes as she took two steps back."When we were at the beach, Serena didn't answer my calls. And it was you who told me about the wax figure corpse. You said yourself that the figure's eyes looked a lot like hers."So I just figured it had to be the work of a wax sculptor. You're a wax sculptor yourself, and you argued with Serena. It makes sense that the polic

Chapter 8

In the senior apartment, Joaquin prostrated himself before Bethany and banged his head hard against the floor several times as an apology. Bethany wiped away her tears. Then, she suddenly stood up and grabbed him by the collar. With all the strength she could muster, she slapped him hard across the face."You're just like Wayne—you can't tell right from wrong. When things get tough, all you do is hide, showing not an ounce of responsibility. You believe the lies of the wicked easily, yet your heart is hardened toward those who truly care about you, and you treat them like trash."I wish the one who's dead was you and not Serena! Don't come see me again. I have no son from this day onward!"As Joaquin stumbled out of the senior apartment, his phone rang. Wayne's attending physician asked him urgently about his whereabouts. Only then did he remember that Wayne was still lying in the hospital, waiting for his liver transplant."Take my liver and give it all to my father. Someone lik
