Chapter Fifty-Six: The Abcs of the Past.

It was bedtime now, and the twins had gone down relatively easy, perhaps that was because they were full tonight, either way, it made night activities easier.

Annabelle turned off the lights to the makeshift bed that she had learned a few months ago was actually called a ‘bathtub’, but filled with blankets; it made the perfect bed for the twins.

She walked over to the still-lit common room then examined the groups that had formed.

Out of the twenty-four, four of them were not allowed in the field for any ‘muscle’ work: the twins, the recently pregnant Trie and her.

She did perform the usual tasks like pickpocketing if the need arose, but mostly she just sang on the upper side of town, an area where almost no one from the orphanage frequented.

The only reason why she was not allowed in the field was:

“Annabelle! Start here!!” Cindy yelled as she waved her hand from side to side.

Cindy had pink and bl

“YOU’RE DOING WHAT??” Annabelle yelled, slamming the conjoined table in the hall, which in turn startled the remaining people in the room. The room was empty, save for Carre, Rodrick, Davis, Calvin and surprise surprise, Rocco.“Calm down, Annabelle,” Davis said, rolling his eyes.“CALM DOWN? CALM DOWN??” She repeated. “I AM CALM!! DO I NOT LOOK CALM!!?” Annabelle looked wildly at Davis as she waited for a response.Rodrick cleared his throat then turned away, unable to contain his laughter, while the rest of the room wondered how in the hell, she could yell that question with a straight face.“ARE YOU CRAZY? YOU ARE GOING TO START A TURF WAR!!” She continued when no one responded to her.“Belle, she is family!” Davis answered, raking his curly black hair that fell right back to the sides of his face. “Also, stop fucking yelling, you'll wake the guys!”

The second the older lady was out of the door, the officers began laughing, and Annabelles’ sunken heart elevated.“Oh, they are laughing because the old lady’s demands are unreasonable?!” she muttered to herself.“Why the hell would we do a sweep? They're all going to die before they reach twenty anyway, and those that don’t the Morello’s have their eyes on them.”Morello’s were a rapidly growing gang.“They give birth like rats there!” an officer chimed. “don’t you think they will pass on their values?”“Maybe,” one gruff voice said as he chuckled. “but they’ll go extinct eventually.”“Yeah, its best to just let them kill each other…they will tire themselves out, and we will have less to worry about.” Another voice chimed.Annabelle’s mind was silent for the first time since the news shared in th

The funeral was short, well as short as most unofficial funerals held by kids were, not that there was even a scale that they could compare to.The unexpected turf war had cut them short from twenty-four to eighteen, and they were now at the mercy of paying the big five ‘protection’ money. But those were not the only unexpected changes. Davis hardly spoke, and one would think that Trie had cursed him, but worse was the state of the brain. All she did was draw maps and pathways. She would light up the areas where cameras could reach and highlight the blind spots. She hardly ate, hardly spoke, and since the war, she had not attended any more poetry lessons.Betsy lost her right leg, and the group was now divided.Everything was falling apart, and like water, it was impossible to scoop the mess.“Belle, you should…” Rodrick approached the haggard mess in the corner of the common room, next to maps, papers and marking, th

Kassian.“How is everything, political matters aside?” He asked Ken, his aid and Vivanna’s cousin, as he unbuttoned his coat then tossed it on the red and gold couch in his office. They were both from a very exhausting trade meeting that had ended in a stalemate, meaning that they would have to go back for further negotiations tomorrow. Still, Ken’s expression remained passive, and his light purple gaze held no judgment or strong opinion on the trade matter. In any case, if he found a beneficial solution, he always shared. He was the best thing to happen to him since he had stepped into the spotlight. Kenneth Gordi Rorei was sharp, business-oriented, and most importantly, he had a knack for good deals and predicting social trends. It was mid-morning a week after Vivanna’s arrival, and he still had no idea when she would open her eyes.“The Dutchess became progressively more stable after Anna bega

“YOU ARE WORTHLESS!!” the dark-haired man screamed, then raked his hair for the nth time. “Why can't you get this right!!”He yelled, overturning the metallic table that held some silver appliances causing me to flinch from my suspension, but as I did, the metallic hooks that pierced my flesh tore further at my skin, forcing me to stay still in my suspended position.“Bring the blood in!! Follow the motion of energy in your body! Feel the pulse!!!” he turned, his purple eyes glowering only anger, but I could barely keep my eyes open to observe him further. There was blood on the floor, and the only thing that clued me in on whose it was was the dryness that covered my skin. Three hooks pierced each extended hand, and one large one pierced my upper back, using the pinched flesh to keep me suspended in the air. How my skin had not torn, I had no idea, but I was no different from the meat hung to dry in a butchery.

“Is there something you want to say to me?” were the first words out of Rodrick's mouth as soon as I entered ‘Maloney's’ room.“Is there something you want said to you?” I asked in response, “I am here for…”I pointed to the way too comfortable boy seated upright on Trie’s former bed with a bowl of half-eaten white mush.-Hadn't he been interrogated? Why the hell do they look as though they were having their very first sleepover?-“Seriously?” Rodrick frowned, and I crossed my arms over my chest.“Okay, it seems that there is. Let's take this outside, or would you rather we share everything before a stranger?” I asked.Rodrick’s gaze shifted from me to Maloney, then he sighed. He stood from his position, a metallic chair that had been at the foot of ‘Maloney's’ bed, then walked past me and moments later, I followed him outside

I mean, he had passed out from a fever.“What do you usually do, for money, I mean?” he asked, and I cocked my head to the side.“We steal? Isn't that obvious, or are you just trying to be polite?”“N-no, I just didn’t want to assume.”“Assume what? Hmm, you are way too thoughtful for fieldwork. • Your Last Lie to Me! {Book One}   Final Author's Note of Book One

I know, I know, I promised more Vivanna and Kassian, but as I was writing, the Envian arc turned out bigger than I thought it would. {Please don’t stone me, I am a terrible planner} So, I decided to focus on background information that will play key roles in book two. Though I wanted to add more Envian adventures, it wouldn't be fair to do so burned out; that way, I can give more thought to their relationships and the flow of the story. This is a great place to end book one and perhaps take a breather before I start planning for book two. So far, you have met or 'heard of' (ahem) the major leads, and now book two will be centred on: Daisy, Erden, Kassian, Bryant, the demon, a bit of travelling to different continents with Isaac and more of fierce Vivanna, lol, unfortunately, the bumbling and uncertain Vivanna dies in book one and comes back far more villainous in book two. I’d also like to thank you so much for reading.

That way, I can limit the suspicions.“So? What the hell do you want.”Was I coming on too strong?“The prince says that you do not need to attend the seminar. The purple patch of discolouration on the King’s neck was proof of poisoning, yet he could stand before me, before all the nobles in the room and pretend that there is nothing wrong with him.Patricide, in nobility, is not rare. In fact, when I was reading about his death, I didn’t particularly find it shocking that his son was poisoning him, however seeing it with my own eyes…“Child, your father would be proud to see you stand here today.”I doubt it. The glimpse of him from my nightmares told me that I could do nothing to make him feel proud.“yes.” I smiled.“I heard that you lost your concubine.” He sighed, “sometimes things like that happen, but I hope that you will be careful in wrapping up this matter.”“Even though he is a fallen prince, he had allies.” The King whispered to me, “If it is not handled well, this matter could cause a nationwide war.&r

“…and now, I declare, you, Lady Vivanna Pursioe Rorei, the official dutchess of Portburgh and an official part of one of the two dutchy households in the kingdom of Envia.” The King, a frail white-haired man, announced before applause filled the room. The event was more exquisite than I had imagined. If Kassian hadn't gifted me a white and red gown to wear to the event, I probably would have been embarrassed.Still, it's ten a.m, and everyone is in dresses rather than pyjamas. I can't really say that I favour the culture of this world…‘This world’…My world? That stupid mage, saying shit like that then paring it with ‘the people involved in the reincarnation spell, ‘including you’, had their memories distorted and gave something up because what we did was against all known laws,’So, according to him, I owe a whole lotta people but have no recollection of it.

That can’t be classified as an assassination attempt. I mean, for god's sake, his face is soo….” I sighed. “I..wouldn't have tried to if he…if he didn’t look so much like Rodrick. Basically, it was a momentary loss of ….” I sighed then my lips sealed themselves shut before the next words could flow from me. “Hmm, are you going to proceed?” “If I don’t want to, does that mean that we can proceed with my questions now?” “Well, yes, but I do intend to pay in kind.” He shrugged, and I rolled my eyes. “When…” my voice broke, I never in a thousand years thought that I could confess this…untold tragedy to anyone. The full day’s events were a secret that I had vowed to take to my grave, but at this point, what

“Where am I?” I asked, my voice sounding groggy or was it lazy? All I was certain of is that my body felt weak and I, myself, felt weary. -Why, why was I throw into the past? Why do I keep coming back as Vivanna?- “Wow, you don’t even want to know who I am?” I was in the same dress that I had gone to the ball in, only barefoot. I made myself more comfortable by sitting cross-legged on the ground. I stared down at the floor once more, or rather the cosmos then sighed. Even if I were to search for clues…this situation is way beyond my control, and frankly…I am tired. More than just physical exhaustion, I think I have just had enough. “Neiwei? Is he alright?” I asked, and the man frowned. In fluid movements, probably because his legs had turned to inky smoke, he flowed to me, then with his sharp claws oozing his essence, he tilted my chin. “Ah… I see you had erased all the bad things that the goddess made you relive?” -The goddess

“What's this? A peace offering?” I asked, frowning at the cheap trinket she offered “No, you idiot, this is a birthday gift from me.” “I mean, I prefer money, but….” I said, then reached for the trinket. As soon as my hand touched the object she held, her pink eye turned golden, and as though that wasn’t bad enough, it began glowing. A chill crept up my spine, forcing me to still in my spot. The sounds that often framed nightfall were silenced, and even the air’s stillness could be felt. -The hell is going on? I can’t…move my body? - “Isn't it about time you wake up?” Milossa spoke in a voice that did not even sound like her own. Her lips were moving, yes, but they did not match her words. “Vivanna, or should I call you Annabelle?” the voice said, “You know of the tragedies that will befall you next.
