Maxwell didn't say a word. He knelt in front of Jennifer and started to remove her shoe.

Startled, Jennifer exclaimed, "Don't do that!"

"Stay still. I need to check if your ankle is injured," Maxwell said as he gently removed her sock. He held her foot and inspected the swelling around her ankle.

Jennifer was losing her mind. No matter how much she tried to resist, she couldn't ignore Maxwell's gentleness. His concern and care were a breath of fresh air, knocking down the walls she built around her heart.

Jennifer feared her thoughts would spiral further, so she pushed him away again. "It's just a minor injury. I can take care of it myself."

But Maxwell remained in his kneeling position. He looked up at her tenderly. "But I'm worried."

"Why are you worried about me?" Jennifer couldn't help but snapped. "You should be worried about your sickly son, or your suspicious wife! I don't need your concern."
