The most anticipated day

Guillermo had to interview several candidates for the position of his daughter's nanny. However, he felt that none of the interviewees met the requirements. The first to be interviewed was Valeria, who made a great impression on him because of her resemblance to his late wife. He couldn't stop thinking about her. Also, when Valeria met little Laura, there was a great connection between the two, which left Guillermo thinking that perhaps she could be the best choice.

After a long list of candidates, Guillermo had to make a final decision. Time was running out and the work at the company was becoming more demanding every day, so he had to choose someone as soon as possible.

Of all the young women he had interviewed, Valeria was undoubtedly the most suitable. He saw great maturity in her and, in addition, his daughter Laura had made a good connection with her. But there was another important reason that motivated him to choose her: the great resemblance she had to his late wife.

So, he immediately gave the news to Valeria, who was overjoyed to know that, from that moment on, she would be able to be closer to her daughter.

Valeria was at home, sitting on the couch, looking anxiously at her phone. Several days had passed since the interview and every minute that passed without hearing from Guillermo increased her desperation. The house services were overdue, her savings had run out and she had not looked for another job because she desperately wanted the nanny position to be close to her daughter, even though she could never reveal the truth to him.

Suddenly, the phone rang. Valeria quickly picked it up and saw Guillermo's name on the screen. Her heart began to pound as she answered the call.

“Hello,” Valeria said, trying to remain calm.

—Hello, Valeria, I'm Guillermo Martínez, how are you? —Guillermo responded in a firm but friendly voice.

—I'm fine, thank you. And how are you? —Valeria tried to sound calm, although she was nervous and excited at the same time, it was the call she had been waiting for.

—Okay, thanks. I'm calling to talk about the babysitting position. —Guillermo paused.

Valeria felt a knot in her stomach. This was the crucial moment, when it would be decided whether Guillermo would really give her the job or if he had simply called to tell her that he had already chosen another candidate.

—Yes, of course. Have you made a decision yet? —Valeria asked, trying to hide her anxiety.

—Yes, after interviewing several candidates, I have decided that you are the ideal person for the position —said Guillermo.

Valeria felt a wave of relief and joy. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. She covered her mouth trying not to scream out of excitement, took a deep breath and calmed down, then she answered:

—Really? Thank you, Mr. Guillermo! You don't know how much this means to me — Valeria replied, excited.

—I know, Valeria. I could appreciate the connection you had with Laura even though it was the first time you met, and I think that's a good sign that you'll be an excellent nanny for her. Plus, your maturity and dedication are exactly what I was looking for —Guillermo smiled.

—I won't let you down, Mr. Guillermo. I'll do everything I can to take care of Laura and make sure she's happy —Valeria said with tears in her eyes.

—I'm sure you will. See you tomorrow so you can start getting familiar with Laura's routine —Guillermo sounded confident.

"Thank you, Mr. Guillermo. See you tomorrow," Valeria replied with a trembling voice.

Valeria hung up the phone and plopped down on the couch, feeling a mix of relief and happiness. Finally, she could be close to her daughter, even if she could never tell her the truth.

Valeria woke up very early the next day, with a mix of nervousness and excitement. She dressed carefully, choosing a professional but comfortable outfit. She reviewed the recommendation letters she had prepared once again, making sure everything was in order. She knew that this job was crucial to getting closer to her daughter and she couldn't afford any mistakes.

Before leaving home, his cell phone rang. When he saw the screen, he realized it was Rebecca. He hesitated for a few seconds about whether he should answer her, but then thought it was best to do so and give her the news right away, even though he knew it could put their friendship at risk.

—What are you saying, Valeria? But that can't be right. You told me that you were only going to the interview to have the opportunity to see your daughter. I thought you were going to reject the job offer —said Rebecca, surprised.

—Rebeca, please try to calm down. You don't know the connection I had with my daughter just by seeing her once. She doesn't have her mother anymore, so I'm here to take care of her. If fate is giving me this opportunity, I'm not going to turn it down — Valeria answered, determined, before hanging up without letting Rebeca say anything else.

She had already made up her mind and she wasn't going to turn back. The only way to have her daughter close to her was to accept this nanny job, so she was ready to do her best to be close to her little girl. Rebeca was very worried, regretting having given her the information of the Martinez family. If something bad happened, she would put years of service at the fertility clinic at risk.

Upon arriving at the Martinez mansion, Valeria was greeted again by the maid, who led her to the living room where Guillermo was waiting for her.

—Good morning, Valeria. I'm glad to see you so punctual —said Guillermo with a smile and an inexplicable emotion that he felt just by seeing her.

—Good morning, Mr. Guillermo. Thank you for seeing me — Valeria replied, trying to hide her nervousness.

—Of course. Today I want you to get acquainted with Laura's routine and spend time with her. I'm sure you'll get along very well —said Guillermo, inviting her to sit down.

"I'm looking forward to getting started. I'll do everything I can to make Laura feel comfortable and happy," Valeria said with determination.

"That's what I hope. I trust you'll do an excellent job," Guillermo replied, looking at her seriously.

Valeria nodded, feeling a mix of responsibility and hope. She knew that this was the beginning of a new stage in her life, one that would allow her to be close to her daughter and take care of her as she had always wanted.

At that moment, little Laura entered the room, holding a toy in her hand. Seeing Valeria, she smiled shyly.

—Hello, Valeria —Laura said, approaching her.

—Hi, Laura. Ready to spend a fun day with me? — Valeria replied, bending down to be at her level.

Laura nodded excitedly, and Guillermo watched the interaction with a look of relief. He needed someone like Valeria to be able to work in peace.

—Well, I'll leave you two to get to know each other better. If you need anything, I'll be in my office, said Guillermo, heading for the door.

Valeria and Laura spent the morning playing in the garden. The little girl was full of energy and curiosity, and Valeria felt more and more connected to her. As they played, Valeria couldn't help but think about how much she looked like her when she was a child. She had pulled out her hair, and although her eyes were her father's, the look reminded her of her.

“Do you like living here, Laura?” Valeria asked as they built a tower of blocks.

—Yes, but I miss my mom a lot —he replied with noticeable sadness.

Valeria felt a pang in her heart when she heard those words. She knew she couldn't replace Laura's mother, but she was determined to give her all the love and care she could. After all, she was her real mother, even if she had to keep that secret.

—I know, Laura, I know how you feel, but I'm here to take care of you and play with you so you don't feel alone. You can always count on me —said Valeria, gently stroking her beautiful hair.

Laura smiled and they continued to play. As the hours passed, Valeria realized that she was beginning to form a genuine bond with the girl. However, she also knew that her ultimate goal was to be able to tell Guillermo the truth. And that at some point her daughter would be able to see her as a mother, but she knew that for that moment to come, she had to be very patient.

At noon, the maid called them in for lunch. The dining table was elegantly set, with plates of delicious food. William joined them, and Valeria noticed the sadness in his eyes as he looked at his little daughter.

—Laura, how did it go with Valeria? —Guillermo asked, trying to sound cheerful.

—Very good, Dad. We played a lot and he told me funny stories —Laura replied enthusiastically.

—I'm glad to hear that. I'm glad to know that you're getting along well with Valeria. And I thank you for taking such good care of her —Guillermo said, addressing Valeria.

—It's a pleasure, Mr. Guillermo, Laura is a wonderful girl —Valeria answered sincerely.

After lunch, Guillermo took Laura to her room for a nap. Valeria took advantage of the moment to explore the house a little more. She looked at the family photos on the walls, trying to find out more about the Martinez family's life. Every detail she discovered brought her closer to her goal.

She approached the fireplace and saw several family photos on the mantelpiece, where there was a picture frame with the image of Laura's late mother. She was a very elegant and beautiful woman, and she was very struck by the resemblance she had to herself; her hair color and skin tone were very similar, but she knew she was an only child, otherwise she might have thought that somewhere in the world she had a sister. However, she didn't give it the slightest importance and continued exploring the house.

(…)

An hour later…

When Laura woke up from her nap, they spent the afternoon drawing and reading stories. Valeria was surprised at how quickly the little girl had begun to trust her. She felt she was on the right path, but she knew there was still a long way to go.

At the end of the day, Guillermo approached Valeria while she was helping Laura put away her toys.

—Valeria, I wanted to thank you again for everything you've done today. I know it hasn't been easy for Laura since her mother passed away, but she seems to feel very comfortable with you —Guillermo said with a grateful smile.

—Thank you, Mr. Guillermo, I'm here to help with whatever you need — Valeria replied, feeling a mixture of satisfaction and guilt at the same time. Deep down she wanted to tell Guillermo the truth, but she couldn't risk him reacting differently than she expected, and ending up kicking her out of the mansion.

As she made her way to her apartment that night, Valeria couldn't stop thinking about how close she was to her daughter. She knew this was just the beginning and that she would have to be patient and careful. But she was determined to keep going, no matter the consequences.

Days turned into weeks, and Valeria became more and more integrated into the Martinez family's life. Every morning she arrived early at the mansion, ready to take care of Laura and make sure she had a day full of activities and fun. The routine became familiar and comforting, both for her and for the little girl.

Guillermo, for his part, began to notice the positive change in his daughter. Laura seemed happier and calmer since Valeria's arrival. Guillermo often found himself watching Valeria as she played with Laura in the garden or read her bedtime stories. There was something about her that drew him in, a warmth and dedication he hadn't seen in a long time.
