The Rocking Horse Saloon was rocking, and Kiera Samuels could watch the action for once. She worked as a member of the waitstaff here, being run ragged serving and cleaning up.
Sheâd left the Fort Granger Pack sheâd worked there since then. Everyone knew why Kiera left. Some were happy when sheâd isolated herself to the buffer zone between the Fort Granger Pack and the Jasper Sounds Pack Territory.
They allowed her to work at the Rocking Horse because it wasnât in town or in either of the packsâ territories. Partly because the locals couldnât control what happened in the buffer area. As long as no one broke the law, they couldnât enforce anything.
Other locals like the surrounding girls celebrating her best friendâs birthday. There werenât many who would give Kiera the time of day. But these three did, and the birthday girl, Patricia Jonas, was the best. Also known as, Trisha by friends and family.
âSo, April hereâs been seeing Jerome Caine for a week! Can you believe it? At least she waited for him to lose the braces.â Kiera knew no other wolf shifter who needed braces, but Jerome. Heâd been born with a snaggle tooth.
âOne date. Heâs cute now. Give him a break. Maryâs disappearing with that new combat trainer after class. Why arenât you on her back about that?â Kiera smiled and listened to the girls laughing and gossiping with each other. This was a reminder of how she no longer belonged. She had nothing to contribute, and no one asked. They knew her life sucked.
âKiera, you should come back even for a visit.â Trisha said, trying to rope Kiera into the conversation. It was something she always brought up at least once.
These girls had a small rebellious streak, and thatâs probably why they were all here.
Why would no one want Keira around? Simply put. Theyâre wolf shifters. A year ago, so was Kiera, but todayâŚ
Today, sheâs a dreaded Lycan. Lycans literally were a manmade creature. No one knows much about them, including the Lycans.
Quite literally, history was repeating itself. Shifters, vampires, and many supernatural creatures were created by the Fae centuries ago as disposable soldiers. After a small group of humans banished the Fae, and freed them from their slavery. The humans turned on them, forcing them into hiding ever since.
Few humans knew of their existence. One group used them for otherwise illegal genetic experiments because there werenât laws against it. When their experiments came to light by the human population, supernatural creatures were discovered as well.
Kiera was one of many who were kidnapped and survived long enough to be saved. But changed forever more into a thing no one understood.
They failed to realize how different the Lycans were. They knew nothing. Not their lifespan. Could they have mates or pups? Did they resist diseases? Were they violent? Smart? Crazy?
Stories spread with no fact verification, and many were testing and studying Lycans now.
Kiera opted out. She never wanted to see another needle, hazmat suit, or white lab coat again.
So, here she sat with her few friends, pretending like nothingâs changed, but it has. Kiera felt like the poor kid pressing her nose against the sweetshop window, dreaming of tasting just one treat. Sheâd pretend everything was okay for tonight. Trisha knew the truth and respected Kieraâs privacy.
She was enjoying herself so far. Then Dean Jonas, Trishaâs brother and Alpha of the Fort Granger Pack, came over to the table. All six feet of deadly grace, his dark hair needed a trim, and his dark eyes kept flicking to Kiera, while he approached. There wasnât a smile on his face until he set a present on the table and looked at Trisha. Kiera hated that. She didnât know what he was thinking when he looked at her like that.
âHappy Birthday, pup. Now donât blow it all in one place.â He genuinely loved Trisha, and his only other relative other than his mother, who raised them alone. How did he get the position of Alpha? The traditional way, he fought for it and the scars he carried proved it.
âYou remembered or did mom buy it for you?â Trisha asked this every year. Their mom had stopped buy things like that for him years ago.
âReally? Thatâs rude squirt. Anyway, I wanted to come over here and remind you that youâve got an hour before curfew starts. So enjoy your time.â
âAw, you wonât stay, Alpha Jonas?â Mary asked in a teasing, wheedling manner.
That was Kieraâs cue to excuse herself from the table. She couldnât stay there with an Alpha that called her a liar and be stared at. Sheâd had enough of that over the last year.
Kiera headed for the bathroom through the dimly lit and noisy bar. Kiera hated the fact sheâd lost her sensitive hearing that she had before her kidnapping. Sheâd lost her heightened sense of smell and hearing as well. But gained heightened sight and touch. It meant she hated and missed the feel of being touched by others and sunny days were almost painful. Fabric and clothing were hit and miss these days.
Lost in her thoughts, Kiera didnât notice Dean leave the table and follow her. The noise of the loud music made it difficult for Kiera to hear her footsteps or Deanâs. But she felt the electric spark of his hand on her forearm, preventing her from entering the bathroom.
It wasnât as loud back here, and she heard his words clearly enough.
âAlpha Jonas, if there is a problem?â Kiera didnât want to ruin Trishaâs birthday, but she didnât want to deal with her ex-alpha.
âWhen are you going to come to your senses and come home?â
âI wonât change my mind. You might not believe me, but I wonât be forced to listen to all of it.â
âItâs not safe for you to live alone. Itâs not healthy either. You need a pack.â
âI will say this again. Iâm not a wolf shifter. No one knows if Lycans need a pack like wolves. But thereâs nothing that says I need to be reminded repeatedly in a day that Iâm not what I used to be and no longer belong.â
âKiera, that was no oneâs intention. Youâre being overly sensitive.â
âLook, as long as you donât see it and resist dealing with it. I wonât come back. Heck, Iâm happy where I am right now and maybe I wonât leave it ever.â Kiera hated this. Sheâd been through so much and she believed she shouldnât have to face critical words and unnecessary judgements for something she didnât ask for. Why they had to blame her for what happened, she didnât know.
The country music switched to a popular song everyone danced to, and Lacy Addams and her pampered person interrupted them.
âAlpha Jonas, come dance with me. Iâm bored and want to have some fun before curfew starts. Itâs our song.â Lucy Hinds was another annoyance in Kieraâs life sheâd mostly left behind when she walked away from the pack. Kiera was relieved that day to see the last of her and her nails.
Kiera knew his expression was dark and disapproving before Lucyâs interruption, but it got darker than soon as she spoke. âNot now Lucy.â Lucy dated Dean and half the packâs males before graduation from high school. She was known her nails and matching makeup.
âCome on, please. One dance. Iâm sure I can show you a better time than that beast. The song will end soon before we get to the dance floor.â Kiera wasnât sure what she saw. Dean was staring at her face with a firm grasp on her arm. The next moment, his back was to Kiera, and he loomed over Lucy.
âI said no. Go find someone else to pester. Weâll also speak later about calling people beasts.â
Kiera saw her opening. While frustrated and angry, she slipped into the bathroom. Dean saw the bathroom door close behind her and frowned in frustration.
He brushed off Lacyâs cream sickle coloured painted nails. The she-wolf was a menace to all males. It didnât matter the species as far as he knew. Sheâd tried something with her eye makeup to match her nails, but to Dean she looked ridiculous. Kiera was far more pleasing to his eyes these days.
He waited outside of the bathroom for several minutes, but she didnât come out. Dean figured heâd be nice to her sister and her friends for a bit. Then heâd find a seat out of the way to have a drink and watch his sister and the pack members with them.
He hated the fact that Kiera left the pack and made up stories about why sheâd left. He could see that most still loved her for who she was and not what she now was. Well, Lucy and her cronies were an issue heâd eventually have to deal with. Now, most nights, he kept a detail of two enforcers watching her in the evenings, just in case something happened.
She may have abandoned the pack and her life there, but Dean, in his quiet way, hadnât abandoned her.
Rob had settled down with a beer when he saw her come out of the bathroom. She didnât get far, though.
James Duncan, the jerk, were blocking her path. Dean knew James had no business with Kiera, so why was he talking to her?
Dean couldnât confront him here inside the Rocking Horse, but the parking lot was fair game. Heâd have to wait for that.
Kiera couldnât hide forever in the bathroom. Once Dean left the table, she left the bathroom and was about to paste a smile on her face, but that ended when another bane of her existence appeared blocking her way.
âAlpha Duncan, what a surprise. Iâm sorry. I canât help you tonight. Itâs my night off.â
âWe need to talk, Kiera. You need to join my pack, or I canât predict the danger youâll be in.â James loomed over her like he usually did when he wanted to mess with her. She didnât buy this anymore than she bought anything he told her during their time at school.
âOr else whatâs going to happen? Seriously, Alpha Duncan, I need to know what youâre talking about.â
âYou need to pick a side, Kiera, or else.â
âElse what? Whatâs going to happen?â She hated this. âLook, if you want to scare me great. But Iâm sorry you failed now. I have a birthday party to go to. Have a good evening.â She tried to be polite, but it was difficult after all these years.
The two alphas must be fighting again and threatening to go to war again. It was tiresome, and it got old very fast.
Kiera slipped around the alpha and returned to the table. âHey, what did I miss? Anything good?â
âOh, nothing really. We were just speculating about what my brother was up to. Has he come to his senses yet?â âThat again? I told you weâre here for you and to have fun. Letâs not talk about my pity party. You still havenât told us what you wished for. Come to think of it, youâve not told us about much of anything. I think youâre holding out on us.â âYou buy the next round of drinks, and Iâll see if I can squeeze a few interesting stories before we have to leave.â Trisha looked down at her watch and frowned. Kiera sighed sheâd been ordering the drinks all night because she received a discount on them. âMaybe one story. Deanâs insisting on hosting a weekend gather for other pack to come here and mingle. You know the whole talk politics and find a little action. If a few matings happen along the way, itâs a bonus. The problem is, he canât host it. He and James have the two packs fighting each other.â Trisha realized the time and how late it was getting. She mad
Kiera sat there and drank every drop of alcohol that her friends left behind and drank a couple more before it was closing just to rub it into Deanâs face. After all, he sat there watching the entire time. What annoyed her the most was that she caught him speaking to Don, the owner and current bartender. He didnât hide the fact he was talking to him about her. The two wolves kept looking at her. She felt like she was missing some important detail here. After a minute or two of that confusion, she gave up on thinking about solving that problem and went back to figuring out what she should do about her friends. Since she moved to the cottage down the road from here, sheâd been seeing less and less of them. Kiera knew it wasnât their fault. If she hadnât taken the job in town, her kidnappers would never have caught her. Elder Evans made that quite clear to her when she recovered enough to hear her spew the venom about no longer being graced by the moon
âHey, Kiera, where are you going? I think youâre going in the wrong direction, sweetheart. My truck is that way. Let me take you home.â Dean hated every single word he uttered. He tried to threaten her earlier to go with him. Why? Why was he screwing with her again? Sheâd been through enough already and she was drunk. Talk about kicking her when sheâs down. âAlpha Duncan, would you kindly shove it up youâre ass? Iâm tipsy, not stupid. Take me home.â Kiera snorted at that. âI work here to remember. Iâve heard the pickup lines. That one has the girl asking, âYours or mine?â Screw that. Iâm walking home. Please get out of my way.â Dean was thankful she at least kept her manners while drunk, even if she was still rude about it. He had to admit it was interesting to see Jamesâ reaction to being shot down. The two alphas could be mistaken for brothers they were so close in colouring and size. They were a year apart in age as well. So they ended up in the
Dean went to bed as soon as he got home and slept until morning when the enforcers he left to watch Kiera reported that sheâd run them off close to dawn. They saw nothing that would lead them to believe anyone other than her was out there. Kiera lived alone in a cottage that shared a road with the Rocking Horse Saloon. It originally was used by the first owner of the Rocking Horse, but the current one preferred to live in town. Kiera often opened and closed the bar for him when he wasnât there or needed to leave early. No other buildings were near there and the town was a good twenty minutes away by car. She was alone out there. âFine, go get some rest. Iâll go see her again this morning when I can.â âDean, you have things to do for the pack. You canât be running around after a Lycan through the neutral zone. Your presence threatens the denizens.â âOli, that is probably the weirdest thing Iâve ever heard you say, and you have a few
Now Dean couldnât reach Trisha. What was it with these women? He didnât have time for this. Oli stayed right beside his alpha, and had prudently kept his mouth shut. He didnât know half of what was going on, and what he knew he couldnât be sure what was lying. Oli still thought that Kiera was a Lycan now and she should stay with her people. When heâd posed that to Dean, heâd reminded Oli that her people were far and few. None of them were secure. No one could point to a place and say thatâs Lycan territory. Just because they are the first shifters to possess a third form didnât mean they werenât a form of shifter. They even spoke of the violent streak the Lycan appeared to have as well. Deanâs views were definitely food for the thought Oli needed. They traumatized the Lycans in those labs. They knew wolves and many other shifters had a strong fight-or-flight response. With that viewpoint in consideration, fighting could be the first response because the lab tried
Dean stood there in the damaged cottage that belonged to Kiera. He held the phone out to Oli, completely distracted by his thoughts after heâd heard James make his demands. The land or Kiera, it should be a straightforward decision but his mind rebelled. There was no way he would give up the land. That would give James the last thing he needed to drive Dean and his pack from his territory. No one could live without water. So, the other possibility was Kiera. Find her and hand her over to James. His mind hated this idea. In a protective and possibly territorial way. Why? He thought his attraction to her died the day that they returned her to them changed. How could he feel the hollowness in his soul now, after all this time? There was no way he could explain it. No way he could give into this either. The backlash of mating with a monster was impossible to contemplate with several pack members opposed to her living within pack territory. âOli,
Oli made the arrangements to get the neutral zone cottage fixed. It was more difficult than first thought. He needed to find tradesmen who would work for a Lycan and then assign a security team because of the neutral zoneâs lawless reputation. It was all a pain in the butt. What if she was dead? Or they never found her? It was better to find a way to force the Jasper Sounds Alpha to hand over Trisha. Oli was completing the work orders when an enforcer entered the study. âArenât you supposed to be on front gate duty, Joe?â âI drew the short straw. This was delivered to the front gate a few minutes ago.â Joe held out an envelope and a dagger to Oli. âYou can give it to Alpha Jonas.â The enforcer seemed eager not to be the deliverer of this news. âWhatâs with the dagger?â Oli took the two items from the dark-haired enforcer with his confusion clearly clear on his features. âWe figured the mode of delivery might be important. A silver SUV stopp
Kiera came back to consciousness slowly. Her headache ached like it rarely had in a long time. Alcohol didnât hurt like this. When she touched the back of her head, she winced and frowned. There was a weight around her wrists, which could only mean one thing. Handcuffs. Sure enough, she was chained to a wall in a room with a small, barred window near the ceiling. Other than the light coming in through itâs grimy panes the room she lay on the cold hard floor. Then she remembered vaguely the open back door, and the broken glass on the floor. She might have shot at something, but she didnât know if she hit anything. Then a sharp pain in the back of her head⌠Someone knocked her out. How? She would have had to pass them if for them to hit her from behind and there wasnât any place within her small cottage to hide like that. Who did this? Dean? James? She wouldnât put it past either of them. Well, stuck to the wall as she was and sensitive to the dull light
- One Year Later -Kiera stood watching a group of lone wolves returning to a pack. Many were raised for generations outside of pack life. But things change, situations change. These wolves are literally come in out of the cold, unprotected woods and their pack was opening their arms to them.It divided humans as always on what they thought about supernatural creatures. If nothing else, there were very few humans that didnât care one way or the other. These wolves were coming in from other places in the world where the humans made it impossible for them to live. Now they were picking up everything they can and leaving everything they knew for a chance at a future.Their lycan members were now well established members, and the pack looked to them as the public faces of the pack. It wasnât unusual to see one or more on the news as they work as a security team for various celebrities and figures of note. The pack now ran a small but lucrative security firm, because several of the lycans
Hours. They only had hours to get ready. With much of the pack working together to get things done and sooth disgruntled feelings, they pulled off a makeshift welcome for the thirty lost souls coming to stay with them. Dean struggled to get through thirty files on the different lycan. It was as if each one came with a warning label of their own. No two had the same difficulty. Some were complete loners who theyâd have to work with to bring back into the pack and life within it. They bonded others, who had thatâs why they had so many lycan arriving. They wanted bonded pairs together so that a community could grow from the families that would form. It meant that theyâd not planned correctly, but that could be adjusted again. Dean agreed with Oli and Jerome that the Ruling Council screwed up sending the lycan to them. The order was off and there wasnât enough time given to prepare for their arrival. Also, theyâd agreed to a few new lycan members, not t
Their mating went on after the cleanup and Kieraâs world was addressed. Dean ended up marked as well at some point by Kiera and, finally exhausted, they fell asleep hours later. With the sun coming up and the mating over, Kiera felt a disturbing calm between them. Like this took away the jittery need to find a stable footing. Kiera could swear she could feel Deanâs mood as he slept. Heâd exhausted her so much that sheâd not been bothered by any of her usual nightmares. Kiera felt delicious and loose-limbed. She couldnât remember the last time she felt like this. If she were a cat, sheâd be purring at this point. âMorning. Luna Jonas.â Dean stated with a proud grin like heâd accomplished something last night. Kiera wouldnât tell him, but he had accomplished something. The jerk got his way. He had the pack and her permanently. It wasnât fair. She wasnât ready for this, but she didnât know what she was ready for. She wasnât sure if she should be unhapp
In the bathroom, Dean had the shower running, and he was making sure they had everything they need within easy reach. He remembered to heat the towels and lay out the mat. Whoever built this bathroom put down super smooth tiles on the floor and it was like skating on ice when you stepped out if you werenât careful. The mat had rubber grips to prevent that while drying your feet on it. Dean heard Kiera sigh as she settled under the spray of their large shower. A standard wolf could bath in this shower while in their fur. Now Dean wondered if he needed to remodel the bathroom to fit their new size. Kiera was smaller in her dire wolf form, and he didnât think sheâd fit in here. That was something for another day to think about. Right now, he had an eyeful of his mate and a promise to keep. There was no question for him if she was his mate. Just seeing her like this made everything right. Dean followed her into the shower and cornered her under
It took another week before Dean managed to shift into his alternative forms. Heâd noticed a lot of changes in him. He needed to get larger clothing because his entire body went up to two clothing sizes while he lay in bed. That surprised him quite a bit. Finally, he could hold Kiera and kiss her without feeling like heâd been hit by a steamroller. Once they were home, Kiera wouldnât speak of their mating and she wouldnât set a date for the mating or acknowledgement ceremony. So he surprised Kiera with an evening to mate with her. He didnât need an acknowledgement ceremony. His daily pain was almost nonexistent now and he want to give her what she deserved. Dean wanted Kiera to love their new form and position within the pack. So this evening theyâd start with a private dinner in his apartment and then enjoy the evening with his soon-to-be mate. His mind kept wandering to what was to come. By dawn, theyâd be mated, and thi
Two days later, Kiera and Trisha waited outside Deanâs room as Dr Graves examined him and looked at the latest test results. James returned to his pack to manage a few things. âSo what are you doing for your mating ceremony? When will it be?â Kiera asked Trisha to try to find a different subject that didnât revolve around Deanâs or her recent decisions. âOh, I have him waiting until we can have both packs in the same place without there be fighting. I figure in a few years. I mean, technically, weâre mated. Itâs just the ceremony of recognition of the mating thatâs not been done. It seems so old-fashioned to me.â Trisha tried to brush it off. âHon, if that were true, then youâll be waiting forever to have the ceremony. Why donât you just have it, and weâll threaten to string up anyone and post signs of what they did? Like those photos of cats in their harnesses. âI shredded all the toilet paper while my owner was pooping.â Or âI pooped in m
âThat bastard. Deanâs a jerk. He knew heâd do this and didnât tell anyone that heâd do it. Kiera went there to discuss if it were possible. I know Kiera. Sheâd want to plan for all the worst things before trying anything. I bet he pushed her to let him do it.â âEnough Trisha. Iâll get us the earliest possible portal to there if you just let me think and listen to the portal booking system.â The mages ran the portal system and with itâs high risks of danger, they kept a stranglehold on almost all portal travel. When, where, and how long it would take are just a few of the questions James needed to answer. âCrap. I forgot to ask Kiera if she needed me to bring her anything. I donât know if she has a change of clothes.â âWell, Iâll leave you to create a care package for Kiera and Dean. Let me get this booked.â âWith four bags, James. Weâre taking four bags with us. We can carry them if we have two duffle bags and two packs.â âFine, Iâ
At some point, Kiera looked up at Dean. âDid you call your sister and tell her you were doing this right now?â âNope, because you know very well what Trisha would say and I wasnât going to listen to it, because this is between you and me.â âGoddess save me. Fine, Iâll do it. But when sheâs pissed, Iâm laying all the blame at your door. So you better be prepared when you see her next, because youâre going to hear about it.â Kiera couldnât take it. She needed to talk to someone other than Dean. Trisha was the first person she thought of. Her mind did flit to April and Mary, but right now they were too busy trying to impress her to be reliable. For two who claimed they wanted to help her part-time, that changed when they understood she wasnât dreaming that Dean wanted her as his mate and Luna. Kiera wasnât leaning toward either of them because right now she didnât feel she could trust them to receive the unvarnished truth. She hoped that would change.
âAre you both in agreement with this? If so, I can get you admitted Alpha Jonas, Kiera. Weâd only need permission to draw your blood. If all goes well, you could be home in a day or two. Free to mate in a more relaxed and traditional manner on your own timeline.â Dr Graves looked calm and understanding. He didnât press them further than that. âIâm game if you are Kiera.â Dean knew he was taking risks with his life. If it meant his life would finally be on track and he could see a happily ever after, heâd do it. He knew it was risky, but something in the back of his head was pushing him to do it and he wasnât strong like Kiera, and he couldnât resist listening to it. âFine. I will let them take some blood. As long as I donât need to be admitted for this. How long will it take to know whether itâs working or not?â âOnce your blood is within his body it, we can test his body to see if thereâs any rejection or damage to his organs. But since you
