WHERE ARE THEY

Now Dean couldn’t reach Trisha. What was it with these women? He didn’t have time for this.

Oli stayed right beside his alpha, and had prudently kept his mouth shut. He didn’t know half of what was going on, and what he knew he couldn’t be sure what was lying.

Oli still thought that Kiera was a Lycan now and she should stay with her people. When he’d posed that to Dean, he’d reminded Oli that her people were far and few. None of them were secure. No one could point to a place and say that’s Lycan territory. Just because they are the first shifters to possess a third form didn’t mean they weren’t a form of shifter.

They even spoke of the violent streak the Lycan appeared to have as well. Dean’s views were definitely food for the thought Oli needed. They traumatized the Lycans in those labs. They knew wolves and many other shifters had a strong fight-or-flight response. With that viewpoint in consideration, fighting could be the first response because the lab tried to create a disposable soldiers. They didn’t know if they’d been successful.

“She’s out there, and I don’t believe she went willingly.”

“Kiera shot at someone. She fired once the shotgun before she dropped it. I believe she missed whatever she shot at. Then, before she could shoot again, she dropped the shotgun. They must have jumped her from behind.” Dean listened to Oli’s analysis of the scene. “There’s nowhere to hide. No closet or room to step out of. I’m sure we aren’t talking about something the humans could deal with.”

Dean looked up in frustration and found the missing clue. “I think our kidnapper was safe from the blast and got into a lucky attack.” He pointed up to the ceiling. Whatever or whoever took, Kiera had climbed a wall and hung from the ceiling. She might not have known they were there until it was too late.

“Crap. Few shifters can hang from their claws. Do you think it was another Lycan? Or something else?”

“I don’t know. But I now can’t reach Trisha. That concerns me. Her last text said she was heading out to the contested territory to the pond out there to see if she’s hiding out there.”

     “You let her go there?”

“I told her to take a tracking team with her to all the sites, but I don’t think she did. I haven’t found any that are out.” Dean felt more than annoyed, and he’d haul her onto the carpet for this. She’d have restrictions put on her for quite some time once he was done with her.

“That’s far too close to the Jasper Sounds Pack. Let’s hope none of his pack did anything to her or detained her.”

“If they did, it’s war. I’m calling him. I want to know from him he doesn’t have either of the girls.” Dean and Oli hadn’t left Kiera’s cottage. They’d had a team there searching for any evidence. From scent trails or blood. Anything that could direct them to where Kiera was and who had her. James made it clear last night he wanted her in his pack.

Why was he suddenly doing that? He hadn’t shown any interest before this. So, what changed now? What was his plan?

“Oli, take a minute and get the Jasper Sounds Alpha on the line. I think it’s time we had a talk.”

Oli’s eyebrows disappeared into his hairline. Dean rarely spoke directly to James. That always ended up in an incident that left Oli and his counterpart, Keith Lamont. Oli’s job would get complicated after this, he figured.

This was too much for a lone Lycan. Trisha better not be in trouble, or it would be Kiera’s fault. Oli was sure others would see it that way, too.

      “Hey, Keith, it’s Oli.”

“I was just calling you. What is going on? I just saw the sister of you’re alpha hauled past the study by several guards and locked in a secure room upstairs. My alpha’s just stormed out after yelling orders to leave her there. He’s got business to take care of. Are we at war?”

“At least, she’s not in your jail. I think we might have a slight chance to avoid it. One other question, do you have the local Lycan there too? You know, the one that’s called Kiera. She was once part of our pack.”

Oli winced when Dean yelled from another room. “I never accepted her leaving the pack. She’s still mine.”

      “You hear that?”

“Yeah, I heard it. I’m sorry you’re going through that. I gather it’s been going on a while?”

“It’s getting weird. Do you have her or not?”

“Not that I know of, but I don’t know how you’re alpha’s sister came to be here. Were they together?”

“No, Trisha was supposedly out with a tracking group looking for the Lycan. It looks like Kiera’s home was attacked in the early hours and she’s nowhere to be found.”

“Okay, just checking a few more reports. Nope, nothing here. Just Trisha. I will track down James, and we’ll let them deal with each other on this one. Also, why is the Lycan still part of your pack? I thought she lived in the neutral zone by that package of contested land.”

“That’s something I’m trying to figure out.”

     “Odd…”

     “I feel the same way.”

“I know James was trying to get her to come here.”

      “Why?”

“That’s the funny part. You know how he is. James does nothing without a reason. But this time… This time I think he couldn’t bear her being alone. Not with the hunters poking around at our borders.”

“Wait. What hunters? We’ve not had any attacks from hunters in months. That is very odd.” Usually hunters went after any shifter they could. Their pack affiliation was not important.

“Yeah, funny that. Look, I have my alpha here. I will pass the call to him now. Give me a minute to get him up to speed.” The line went silent when Keith put the call on hold.

Oli went in search of Dean. “He’ll take the call.”

Oli held the phone out to Dean. “The Alpha of Jasper Springs will speak to you.”

“Thanks Oli.” Dean took the phone from Oli and put the call on speaker. “Alpha Dean Jonas here.”

“What do you mean, she’s missing? I don’t have her. If you don’t have her, then where is she? Can you explain why your precious little sister is spying around on my territory?”

“At least, one isn’t missing. What do you plan to do with her? I won’t give up my claim on the land.”

“Well, if that’s how you want to play it. Find Keira and we’ll make an exchange.”

“No, I am not doing that. What else?”

“I don’t know. I’ll think about. Until then, you know where she is. If anyone tries to fetch, I will see it as an attack and an act of war.” James disconnected the call.

Dean locked eyes with Oli. Oli’s only response was to rub his forehead with his fingers. “Why didn’t you promise to give him Keira when we find her?”

“I don’t know, but it turns my stomach at the thought of him having either my sister or Keira.”

     “See, this won’t end well.”

Dean stood there in the damaged cottage that belonged to Kiera. He held the phone out to Oli, completely distracted by his thoughts after he’d heard James make his demands. The land or Kiera, it should be a straightforward decision but his mind rebelled. There was no way he would give up the land. That would give James the last thing he needed to drive Dean and his pack from his territory. No one could live without water. So, the other possibility was Kiera. Find her and hand her over to James. His mind hated this idea. In a protective and possibly territorial way. Why? He thought his attraction to her died the day that they returned her to them changed. How could he feel the hollowness in his soul now, after all this time? There was no way he could explain it. No way he could give into this either. The backlash of mating with a monster was impossible to contemplate with several pack members opposed to her living within pack territory. “Oli,

Oli made the arrangements to get the neutral zone cottage fixed. It was more difficult than first thought. He needed to find tradesmen who would work for a Lycan and then assign a security team because of the neutral zone’s lawless reputation. It was all a pain in the butt. What if she was dead? Or they never found her? It was better to find a way to force the Jasper Sounds Alpha to hand over Trisha. Oli was completing the work orders when an enforcer entered the study. “Aren’t you supposed to be on front gate duty, Joe?” “I drew the short straw. This was delivered to the front gate a few minutes ago.” Joe held out an envelope and a dagger to Oli. “You can give it to Alpha Jonas.” The enforcer seemed eager not to be the deliverer of this news. “What’s with the dagger?” Oli took the two items from the dark-haired enforcer with his confusion clearly clear on his features. “We figured the mode of delivery might be important. Kiera came back to consciousness slowly. Her headache ached like it rarely had in a long time. Alcohol didn’t hurt like this. When she touched the back of her head, she winced and frowned. There was a weight around her wrists, which could only mean one thing. Handcuffs. Sure enough, she was chained to a wall in a room with a small, barred window near the ceiling. Other than the light coming in through it’s grimy panes the room she lay on the cold hard floor. Then she remembered vaguely the open back door, and the broken glass on the floor. She might have shot at something, but she didn’t know if she hit anything. Then a sharp pain in the back of her head… Someone knocked her out. How? She would have had to pass them if for them to hit her from behind and there wasn’t any place within her small cottage to hide like that. Who did this? Dean? James? She wouldn’t put it past either of them. Well, stuck to the wall as she was and sensitive to the dull light

I don’t know what’s going on, but Trisha is down here. I need to go intervene. If I can, I’ll call you later to tell you what happened.” Keith hung up there, leaving Oli and Dean in a state. “James, you don’t want to do this. You’d be forcing yourself on me. That’s not what you want, is it?” Trisha found herself backed up against the back of a love seat by James. His gaze now showed his hunger. Trisha couldn’t hide that fact that in this enclosed space with her secret desire for him. His scent was the tipping point for her. Clearly, he’d hit his tipping point a while back. His growling revealed his need to fuck, and he stalked her, hunting for a willing partner. Trisha couldn’t deny she’d secretly dreamed of passing her time making out with him. Heck, not just making out with him. She’d woken several times as her body orgasmed at the thought of fucking him. “By the time I fuck you, you’ll be begging me to finish.” She had to think of something to bring him to his senses before she lost hers. • Wolves at the Lycan's Door   CHANGE OF PLANS

Sure enough, the old man came back. However, he was upset to see that Kiera hadn’t eaten any of the food. She wasn’t a fool. Kiera was experienced in this situation. It wasn’t her first rodeo, and she wouldn’t risk being drugged, either. Henry was so furious he kicked the tray aside against the stone and grout wall. The plate shattered, where the shards and food scattered over the grimy floor. “I gave you peace and quiet to eat. This is how you thank me? Ungrateful wretch. I am the father of many alphas, and they will not defy me. You want to go hungry, then fine. No more food for you.” He was livid, his over reaction was to an extreme Kiera hadn’t expected. Though it was very revealing to her. He was obsessed with his sons being alphas and he claimed at least two as his blood. He wasn’t an alpha himself, so he lived his rank through his sons. He was a sad creature, and she expected the more she learned, the more disgusting she would find it. The man was deluded an

They shared a mother, but he knew they had different fathers. She never spoke of either males. Dean didn’t know either males’ names, and she’d not left the information with anyone or written anywhere. “Keith, what’s going on? Dean was torn between his sister and Kiera. How was he supposed to choose? How could he not choose? His sister was clearly pack, Kiera was once pack as he’d been told several times now. Dean reminded each person who dared to remind of this, that he never gave her permission to leave the pack. He’d at least admit that he didn’t just say it, but growled at them, annoyed in a way he didn’t remember ever being before. His mood wasn’t improving, either. Dean struggled to keep his head on the more pressing issues. Trisha was under the thumb of James, but her life wasn’t threatened in any way. This had never happened before in all the years they’d known each other. He must get and keep his head in the game. His territory was at stake and his people were in danger of attack from the Jasper Sound Pack. It was his job to lead these people, and he was the one who’d protect them from anything and everything. - One Year Later -Kiera stood watching a group of lone wolves returning to a pack. Many were raised for generations outside of pack life. But things change, situations change. These wolves are literally come in out of the cold, unprotected woods and their pack was opening their arms to them.It divided humans as always on what they thought about supernatural creatures. If nothing else, there were very few humans that didn’t care one way or the other. These wolves were coming in from other places in the world where the humans made it impossible for them to live. Now they were picking up everything they can and leaving everything they knew for a chance at a future.Their lycan members were now well established members, and the pack looked to them as the public faces of the pack. It wasn’t unusual to see one or more on the news as they work as a security team for various celebrities and figures of note. The pack now ran a small but lucrative security firm, because several of the lycans

Hours. They only had hours to get ready. With much of the pack working together to get things done and sooth disgruntled feelings, they pulled off a makeshift welcome for the thirty lost souls coming to stay with them. Dean struggled to get through thirty files on the different lycan. It was as if each one came with a warning label of their own. No two had the same difficulty. Some were complete loners who they’d have to work with to bring back into the pack and life within it. They bonded others, who had that’s why they had so many lycan arriving. They wanted bonded pairs together so that a community could grow from the families that would form. It meant that they’d not planned correctly, but that could be adjusted again. Dean agreed with Oli and Jerome that the Ruling Council screwed up sending the lycan to them. The order was off and there wasn’t enough time given to prepare for their arrival. Also, they’d agreed to a few new lycan members, not t

Their mating went on after the cleanup and Kiera’s world was addressed. Dean ended up marked as well at some point by Kiera and, finally exhausted, they fell asleep hours later. With the sun coming up and the mating over, Kiera felt a disturbing calm between them. Like this took away the jittery need to find a stable footing. Kiera could swear she could feel Dean’s mood as he slept. He’d exhausted her so much that she’d not been bothered by any of her usual nightmares. Kiera felt delicious and loose-limbed. She couldn’t remember the last time she felt like this. If she were a cat, she’d be purring at this point. “Morning. Luna Jonas.” Dean stated with a proud grin like he’d accomplished something last night. Kiera wouldn’t tell him, but he had accomplished something. The jerk got his way. He had the pack and her permanently. It wasn’t fair. She wasn’t ready for this, but she didn’t know what she was ready for. She wasn’t sure if she should be unhapp

In the bathroom, Dean had the shower running, and he was making sure they had everything they need within easy reach. He remembered to heat the towels and lay out the mat. Whoever built this bathroom put down super smooth tiles on the floor and it was like skating on ice when you stepped out if you weren’t careful. The mat had rubber grips to prevent that while drying your feet on it. Dean heard Kiera sigh as she settled under the spray of their large shower. A standard wolf could bath in this shower while in their fur. Now Dean wondered if he needed to remodel the bathroom to fit their new size. Kiera was smaller in her dire wolf form, and he didn’t think she’d fit in here. That was something for another day to think about. Right now, he had an eyeful of his mate and a promise to keep. There was no question for him if she was his mate. Just seeing her like this made everything right. Dean followed her into the shower and cornered her under

It took another week before Dean managed to shift into his alternative forms. He’d noticed a lot of changes in him. He needed to get larger clothing because his entire body went up to two clothing sizes while he lay in bed. That surprised him quite a bit. Finally, he could hold Kiera and kiss her without feeling like he’d been hit by a steamroller. Once they were home, Kiera wouldn’t speak of their mating and she wouldn’t set a date for the mating or acknowledgement ceremony. So he surprised Kiera with an evening to mate with her. He didn’t need an acknowledgement ceremony. His daily pain was almost nonexistent now and he want to give her what she deserved. Dean wanted Kiera to love their new form and position within the pack. So this evening they’d start with a private dinner in his apartment and then enjoy the evening with his soon-to-be mate. His mind kept wandering to what was to come. By dawn, they’d be mated, and thi

Two days later, Kiera and Trisha waited outside Dean’s room as Dr Graves examined him and looked at the latest test results. James returned to his pack to manage a few things. “So what are you doing for your mating ceremony? When will it be?” Kiera asked Trisha to try to find a different subject that didn’t revolve around Dean’s or her recent decisions. “Oh, I have him waiting until we can have both packs in the same place without there be fighting. I figure in a few years. I mean, technically, we’re mated. It’s just the ceremony of recognition of the mating that’s not been done. It seems so old-fashioned to me.” Trisha tried to brush it off. “Hon, if that were true, then you’ll be waiting forever to have the ceremony. Why don’t you just have it, and we’ll threaten to string up anyone and post signs of what they did? When, where, and how long it would take are just a few of the questions James needed to answer. “Crap. I forgot to ask Kiera if she needed me to bring her anything. I don’t know if she has a change of clothes.” “Well, I’ll leave you to create a care package for Kiera and Dean. Let me get this booked.” “With four bags, James. We’re taking four bags with us. At some point, Kiera looked up at Dean. “Did you call your sister and tell her you were doing this right now?” “Nope, because you know very well what Trisha would say and I wasn’t going to listen to it, because this is between you and me.” “Goddess save me. Fine, I’ll do it. But when she’s pissed, I’m laying all the blame at your door. So you better be prepared when you see her next, because you’re going to hear about it.” Kiera couldn’t take it. She needed to talk to someone other than Dean. Trisha was the first person she thought of. Her mind did flit to April and Mary, but right now they were too busy trying to impress her to be reliable. For two who claimed they wanted to help her part-time, that changed when they understood she wasn’t dreaming that Dean wanted her as his mate and Luna. Kiera wasn’t leaning toward either of them because right now she didn’t feel she could trust them to receive the unvarnished truth. She hoped that would change.

He didn’t press them further than that. “I’m game if you are Kiera.” Dean knew he was taking risks with his life. If it meant his life would finally be on track and he could see a happily ever after, he’d do it.
