Prologue
The pain in her head was miserable. Sophia had difficulty even in opening her eyes. But when finally she did, a chord struck in her throat.
A very handsome man was sleeping beside her in his half naked glory with his head ducked to the pillow.
Alarm leaped like a hurricane in her head. How did she end up with an unknown man in her bed? Oh wait! This was not her home. The place looked eerily quiet and was way too costly than hers. It screamed power and money.
Sophia panicked. She was not drunk nor on drugs. How come she has no memory of her past?
She carefully slipped away from under the covers. But it was too late. The man beside her had already woken up. “Who are you? Why are you in my bed?” Sophia squealed in worry.
Much against her expectation the guy was very much composed. He signaled to the ring on her finger and opened the drawer beside him before throwing the marriage testament on her face. “We are married. You are my wife now. Be ready to welcome the life of thorns.”
“What?”
Chapter 1
He slipped away the covers covering his muscled body with a simple flex and walked to the washroom attached to the room, completely nude with not even a trace of reticence.
Sophia did not know till then she was holding her breath. Her shivering hands reached the mobile beside the bed on the side table before she dialed her father.
Lawrence Brown was spontaneous attending to his daughter on the second ring. Before she could speak he started, “I'm sorry princess. Whatever happened, please consider it as a part of destiny. It was unavoidable. We needed to save our company. Saul Campbell was the most prosperous investor who had applied for our company shares. And I had to accept his offer to save our business.”
Sophia was shocked by the act of her father. “What do you mean? Dad! Did you just sell me to an alien without my knowledge by drugging me to save our company?”
Lawrence was about to speak but before he could do so, Sophia cut the call. Saul walked out of the washroom with his towel hanging low and water droplets passing through his sturdy sternum. He was surely a man to impress. “Get ready within half an hour. You don't have the time to gawk at me like a bloody hawk. We need to sign the contract. The lawyer is waiting downstairs.”
“What contract?” Sophia was perturbed, was an understatement. But before she could finish her sentence the door closed with a bang.
The bath took more than the time planned for it because the tears in the eyes of Sophia wouldn't dry up! She felt her entire life shattered just within a fortnight. Who is this man?
Ten minutes later Sophia walked down the stairs in a sky blue floral gown which was placed on the bed after she came out of the shower. Her eyes were red but she did little to cover the sorrow leaping out of them.
“Good Morning ma'am, I'm Peter Scotland, the lawyer of Waratah Vineyards. Here is your marriage contract with Saul Campbell. Please read it and sign the contract.” He shook hands with Sophia and handed the document to her.
Saul was comfortably seated in the executive couch before her. He was sipping his morning coffee, guarding her emotions carefully. “You have no excuse but to sign it. Otherwise I withdraw my shares in your family company and your firm will be sealed. I think you are smart enough to save that humiliation. Your creditors are already waiting on when that happens so that they could get their share from the bank for the firm’s insolvency.”
Thankfully her brain was still functioning. “Why would you want to buy a company which is on the verge of insolvency? Waratah Vineyards is a big name.”
Saul extended his hands on the couch’s backrest and with one leg above the other in all his ascendency like a king. He looked at Sophia with contempt as if she was some old piece of rag. “Because taking over seemingly white elephants, studying the mysterious gains hidden in them from the world is my profession and is what is called smart business.”
“I will never allow you to take over my company.” Sophia yelled angrily but Saul was not the person to get his hackles rise over petty issues.
He shrugged and pointed to the document in her hands. “Sign it. I don't have all day to argue with you.”
“The contract says that Sophia Brown will be the lawfully wedded wife of Saul Campbell for the next two years. After the expiry of the term both the individuals have the choice to continue on the marriage or opt out. But as long as the wedding is alive, Sophia can't be in a relationship with anybody or have sex.” The lawyer stated the contents in the document to Sophia.
“Why is the condition only for me and not him?” She asked the lawyer?
“Why do you want to marry me? You could have simply bought the shares of my company.” Sophia wanted clarity about her wedding.
Saul allowed his head back and left a loud conceited laugh. “Because killing is single time suffering for the person you hate. But if you marry, every day is a living hell!”
“What?” Sophia's face turned pale with uncensored fright in her eyes. “Why do you hate me so much? We did not even meet each other before.”
Before she could realize she felt a sharp sting on her cheek and the composed man before her till moments ago was like a ferocious monster with vile in his cool blue eyes.
No words were found in her brain and neither were they required. She was clueless about his unlimited hatred for her and the man before her wouldn’t give away any reason. Sophia’s hands shook with shiver while she signed the contract and ran back through the stairs to her room crying.
He just married her out of vengeance. But why?
Chapter 2“I'm coming to the office within half an hour. Keep the files ready that I am supposed to inspect.” She informed the assistant and started combing her wild curls looking at the mirror which refused to surrender to the comb. The mark of his fingers on her cheek was strong. Just why does he hate her so much? The anger in her for him was unsurpassed. She covered the marks with a concealer and stepped out of the indo-mexican superstructure which was called the abode of the fearsome anthropoid. The figures were not encouraging. But she was trying to arrange the investors for the firm. “You shouldn't have done what you did to me yesterday, dad. I hate you. You took my life in your control. Who gave you the rights to perform my marriage against my wish? That man is no better than a beast. He is heartless with some unsolved grudge over me.” She bashed to her father and started looking at their firm’s old files. Sophia was under the doubt if they had ever rubbed their noses with her
Chapter 3“I heard you bought the shares of Holiday Wines and married Sophia Brown. Have you gone nuts?” Brandon asked, sipping his wine after both the school friends met in one of the restaurants that Saul owns.“Yes, you're right.” Saul forked a fish finger and lifted his glass of wine. Brandon saw every moment of his friend was measured. “Her company has the potential to improve, so I invested in it just like I had been doing all this while….helping the small and medium firms grow big.”“Don’t tell me stories. I am your friend and I have been seeing you since our school days. Why do you think you rubbed your nose with that evil head and also married her? Brandon asked in shock. “This is ridiculous. I was glad her company was sinking. And you? I thought you were a wise man, Saul. Are you not satisfied with what she did to you in the past?” Brandon’s questions came pouring which disturbed the serenity inside of Saul.“Okay let me go straight to the point. I married her for revenge.
Chapter 4Sophia woke up like a zombie and started doing her morning routine like a machine. By the time she got ready, the breakfast was already arranged on the dining table.“Good morning ma'am, I'm maid Fiona. I cook and clean the house.”“Good morning! I'm late to work. So I will grab something during lunch. Sorry Fiona.” Sophia told in a hurry looking at the time on her watch and almost ran to the door.“I apologize for interrupting ma'am. But sir told you to finish breakfast and then only come to the office. You're going to have a long day.” The maid said politely.“How is the mood of your boss?” Sophia couldn't help but ask her though she knew it was not an appropriate question to a servant working in their home.“I think it's not friendly.” The maid’s information was precise but it was enough to bring crazy goosebumps on the skin of Sophia.Half an hour later she was in the premises of Waratah vineyards head office. “Good morning! The CEO asked me to meet him today.” Sophia sh
Chapter 5Sophia had to reach the 29th floor where the coffee machine was situated using the stairs because the elevator wasn't working. By the time she reached the floor, there was a huge line at the coffee machine. She waited and made black coffee for Saul just as Lara instructed her. “People with black heart always prefer black coffee.” She thought to herself and dragged her feet in high heels back on the staircase.“Why are you so late? Does making a simple coffee take twenty minutes? Or you were on your way impressing another man over there who could clear your company’s dues?” Saul asked while taking the cup of coffee from the tray.Sophia tightened her lips in indignation. “The elevator broke. I had to take the stairs to bring coffee for you. Even near the coffee machine there was a huge line. I had to wait in the list.”“Are you Queen Victoria that people will give space for you leaving their turn?” He asked, sipped his coffee and put on a face like he was about to puke. Saul
Chapter 6“But today, I wish to have a latte.” Saul said, leaning back and relaxing on his super soft leather chair while staring at her in a dare. She raised a finger to him in a warning. “Look, I don't have all the time to serve you coffee. I'm here to learn about work.”Saul raised a single brow and gave a lopsided grin. “My office, my rules. If you don’t want to do it, you can…” “Stop.” Sophia already knew what was coming out of him. “I will go and bring a latte for you.”Thankfully the elevator was working today. The devil had finally decided to relax her torture. She knew the lift was working for everyone in the office the previous day but for her. It was all a part of his plan to make her suffer. She had made the latte and brought it to him within five minutes. “Hmm, it tastes good. So tell me what is my schedule today.”“Schedule? Isn’t Lara going to make it?”Saul looked at her boredly. “I don't have a money minting machine here with which I can feed two assistants. Since yo
Chapter 7“Don't sleep like a log because I announced Christmas vacation for the staff. The vacation is for my employees. It's not for famous personalities like you whom I love dearly and always want to keep by my side. So tomorrow we are going to Los Santos by early morning flight.” Saul informed Sophia while passing through her room to reach his.Sophia resisted the urge to roll her eyes. He was acting as if he had been so considerate towards her. It has been fifteen days since she joined Saul’s company and there has been no weekend and no holiday for her. Every day she gets up at 4:30 in the morning, rushes with her routine and is seen before the Waratah Vineyards head office by six in the morning. “I thought I was your employee because I did not get any extra benefits of being your favorite person.”
Chapter 8“The flight has been waiting for us for half an hour but you wouldn't open your eyes. Are you on drugs?” He shouted at her with unlimited indignation.Sophia looked around her, feeling disoriented because of sleep. But when her eyes finally landed on Saul, she felt more like he was acting his anger upon her rather than really having it. That dream…was it really her dream with her in Saul’s arms or it was reality?Ten minutes later the flight was in the air and the air hostess was openly flirting with him flashing her goods. “Good morning sir! What can I get you for breakfast? We have chicken noodles and fried eggs with toast.”Sophia’s lips tightened in anger but
Chapter 9“Hey Liam, how are you?” Sophia's voice turned cheerful no sooner she saw the number flashing on her phone’s screen.Saul wouldn’t let her learn anything. He is just keeping her with him in his company and home for revenge. But what he doesn't know is Sophia had never been a subservient woman. She has her plans to say goodbye to him permanently.Last month she met one of her business friends, Liam Colon who offered to help her with the money needed for restructuring her business. If everything goes well, she will purchase Saul’s share from her company and ask him out of her life and business. It is not easy but she will do her best to win this battle for her firm.&ldquo
Chapter 81“I'm sorry to disturb you at this late hour sir. Mr Liam Colon escaped from the prison cell.” The officer informed Saul.“What? How could you be so negligent? My wife and I already told you how dangerous he could be. He almost raped her without a third person coming to know despite we having such a huge security. Shouldn't you be taking extra care in guarding such a malicious criminal?” The hitherto calm and happy emotions of Saul were replaced by a storm of annoyance.“I'm sorry sir. Mr Liam called for nature's call and went to the washroom. Close by we are having construction work going on using drilling machines. Because of the sound the jailer couldn't hear the breakage of the glass. When he didn’t see him come out of the wa
Chapter 80“We have received this information from a public telephone. I have no idea who called.” The officer walked to Saul, removed the handcuffs and nodded to him as a goodbye.Saul pressed the remote to lock the door and walked to Sophia for a hug. “Relax. We will soon find out who is the root cause of this issue.”Sophia took out her head from his chest and looked up at him. Saul can read her eyes even in his sedation. In the state of sobriety, she is an open book. Those pulchritudinous eyes were filled with desire. She needs him. So did he. But the issue in hand was of pivotal importance. Saul held her neck and pulled her face closer to him to capture her lips. The kiss screamed, desir
Chapter 79“What? How did he escape from the warehouse torture cell? How did the police get to know about all this and how did they enter my private area without my permission? And above all why am I getting to know all this now?” Saul asked Van, going utterly angered.“It is obvious, there is someone who knows about his whereabouts and informed the cops about him. This person also knows you will not allow him to live for long. To grant him life, I think he sent him to a prison cell.” Van stated diplomatically.“Who could know Liam’s whereabouts other than me and my security staff?”“Maybe we have a mole among the security guards themselves?” Van projected his po
Chapter 78“These stones are way back from 2017. How come you collected them from such a long time when you met me just six months ago?” She twirled the stone in her hand back and forth and looked at him for answers. For a couple seconds Saul was blank trying to fetch a suitable reply. And then his eyes twinkled like two eternity jewels dipped in snow. “Because I have the same hobby. We match in several ways that is why we are wife and husband with the best compatibility.”“Is it so?” Sophia went on her tippy toes and kissed his nose with mischief dancing in her almond shaped eyes that were a fire with passion. She bit her lip and her optics gradually brushed down reaching his lips.
Chapter 77“What?” Saul asked before he turned stunned and speechless. After hearing Liam the grip on his phone weakened and the instrument fell from his hands.“Psst, you are such an emotional crested cuckoo. Even after being in the mafia for so many years, you are so pussy whipped. You need to make your heart steel so that you don't get surprised when you hear news like this.” He twisted his lips in mockery. “Come on, sit here, you need to know more.” He tapped the place beside him for Saul.“You asshole, how dare you command my son?” Carson took a step forward gritting his teeth to beat him. But Saul stopped putting his hand forward as an indication. An unsaid conve
Chapter 76“I'm sorry Mr Campbell, you lost your baby in this mishap.” The physician confirmed after checking upon Sophia.“A baby?” Saul asked, holding the hand of Sophia for support. She was his strength in hard times despite lying unconsciously on the bed.“Don’t you know your wife was pregnant?” The doctor asked, giving her an injection.Saul had no words to say. His feet were about to give up as he took a chair and sat on it. “Mr Campbell, are you alright?” The doctor asked with concern as he saw Saul’s face turn colorless in a matter of a few seconds. He could only manage a nod as his speech
Chapter 75Few hours ago“I have a suspicion that Greg is not dead. Saul didn't indulge in giving me any information, but I got the clue from his conversation.” Lawrence spoke to Liam with a grimace.“Have you gone nuts or are you drunk?” How can Greg be alive? The truck driver gave us the proof of the accident. We saw him bleeding in the location. The doctors confirmed he is dead and we buried him with our own hands. How can there be a slip? That bastard is very clever. He was only trying to deviate you from the topic.” Liam spoke to Lawrence in irritation.“I don't think so, there is a missing piece in this jigsaw puzzle. I saw the truth in his eyes. He would have surely d
Chapter 74No sooner did she touch the bouquet, water sprinkled on her face with happy birthday music.“What the…” She looked around and there he was standing after coming out from behind the door. “Liam?” Sophia asked, surprised.“Happy Birthday dear friend. How are you?” He hugged her and kissed her cheek. Sophia went static with his touch. Liam didn't like it but he hid the pain behind a smile.“Sweet Jesus, I was so frightened when I saw nobody around. Where are the bodyguards? How did you come inside the house without any hindrance from the security? She spoke bewildered.“Ms Campbell, don't
Chapter 73Lawrence wanted to deviate the topic.“Oh, do you think I came here to watch the latest football match, Argentina versus England? You did not even tell me you were shifting to Boston and forbade Sophia also to inform me. For fuck’s sake she is my daughter and I won't harm her like others after knowing her whereabouts. Sophia lost her mom when she was only a child. I brought her up and took care of her every need filling the gap of a mother in her life. She was 100 times happier with me than with you. I'm the damn father, I have every right to know where she goes and where she lives.” He fumed in a rage.Whatever he was from inside Saul wouldn’t allow his emotions to surface before an outsider. It’s the talent in which he mastered many years ago. &l
