Adopt them?” I repeat.

“I have actually been thinking about this for a while now. I know it sounds crazy, but you have custody of them and they have no other family but you. If, God forbid, something happens to you, they would go to foster care. But if we, you and I, legally adopt them then they are our children. We go on their birth certificates as their parents, my parents will legally become their grandparents. We would be the family that we are but it would be, I don't know, more finalized. If that makes any sense.”

“Wyatt.. That's wonderful of you to want this, but it's such a big step.. I know you love them but you would be taking on so much-”

“Callie!” I hear my name being called and I open my eyes to see a familiar face above me. No, it can't be him. He's dead. Tears rain down my cheeks and I shake my head. “How? You can't-” “I'll explain it all do you. But first, are you okay?” Wilder asks me, pulling me into his arms. His arms are so familiar around me, a loving feeling that I missed so much. With a deep sob I cling to him, crying hysterically. “Callie?” Wyatt rushes down the stairs but stops in his tracks when he sees who's holding me. “Wilder?”

Three months Later “Come on Mommy!” Val demands and I groan. “Val, don't rush. They literally can not start without us!” I assure her, but she is still dancing around impatiently. “If you do not stand still you are going to mess up your pretty hair. Or even worse.. your dress.” I threaten her and she immediately goes still. There is nothing she takes more seriously than the protection of her flower girl dress and her recently finished hair. “Has the nausea passed?” Wilder asks me gently, rubbing my back in comforting motions.

  • Wild Winter   Chapter One

Summer I was sitting cross legged on my bed, a cosmopolitan magazine opened on my things. My best friend Katie laid beside me on her stomach, chin propped on her laced fingers. Her white blonde locks fan around her, shiny and smooth. I always envy her for her gorgeous hair, which go so well with her laughing blue eyes and stunningly white smile. She is so beautiful that you could easily mistake her for some glamorous model or fabulous actress. I smile at the thought, because that could not be further from her personality. Katie is a down home country girl, through and through. She is only happy when she is ankle deep in mud with one of her many animals. She does not dream of fame and fortune; her only dre

“I did not!” “Watch her a minute please.” I say to my friends before I take off out of the room and down the stairs to the living room. “What the heck is going on?” I demand before I am even in the room. The boys can sometimes get a little rowdy, but they are rarely 'bad', so this kind of behavior isn't something that I have to deal with often, thankfully. “Ricky said that I threwed a rock at him!” Van says, tears welling in his eyes. “Threw.” I automatically correct him, but it's drowned out by my younger brother rounding on him in anger. “Because you did, you little jerk!” Maverick yells at him. He pulls up his shirt and shows me a bruise on his back,

A few hours later it is finally four o'clock in the afternoon. My friends have been gone for ages, both of them sending me texts as if we didn't spend the whole morning together. Wilder and Wyatt are off in his room doing who knows what. Wilder has to leave for work in a few minutes. He has to be there at five, which is the time that the first of the kids should be arriving. It's almost as if he planned it that way to avoid the house full of screaming kids. I have just finished giving Val a bath since she came in from outside completely filthy. She is now sitting in the living room floor with the baby, watching Beauty and the Beast on dvd for the third time today. Van is in their room, cleaning up his side. Ricky is in the kitchen washing dishes to try to cut down on his time being grounded. I lift the clothes basket up and walk through the upstairs hallway, noticing not f

  • Wild Winter   Chapter Four

An hour and a half later everyone has been fed. The older kids went back to playing while you cleaned up the toddlers. They got spaghetti EVERYWHERE. Wyatt volunteered to clean the kitchen up, which you gratefully accepted after a half-hearted protest. I left the baby on a pallet of blankets in the floor and she plays on her tummy, chewing some toys I found in her diaper bag. Wyatt is sitting on the couch holding her when I lead the two freshly bathed toddlers into the room. “Movie time?” Val asks. “Sure.” I agree. It's after seven thirty, time for the kids to start settling down anyways. “With snacks?” Van and Adam ask at the same time, as if we didn't just eat supper a little while ago.

“I had no idea that you knew my full name.” I remark inanely, moving to lay against him. My head is on shoulder, my arm on his chest and my legs pressed tightly to the side of his. “Yeah, well, you would be surprised by what I know about you.” He tells me. I'm staring over his chest at my wall, the room pitch black dark, as I try to adjust to the newness of the position I am currently in. “Anyways, I need to hear about all the names again. Wilder has told me them all before, a long time ago, but I forgot all but yours.” Wyatt says to me, his hand rubbing my back. “Ugh, horrible names. Seriously, after me, the hospital should have realized that Isolde sucks at naming children and they should have invoked veto power or something. Revoked her naming rights.” I mutter angrily. It's like she went out of

Wyatt drops Grandpa back at the hospital because he doesn't feel like going out to eat with us. Rose and Brian leave to go to get Sara and they take Val and Van with them. Ricky rides with Wyatt so it's just me and Lucy in my car. I drive home to park my car and I have just gotten Lucy out when Wyatt pulls up. He comes to put the baby in her car seat and we leave. “The kids were so cute today.” I comment, to make conversation. The silence was killing me. “I loved hearing the reasons why the love us.” Ricky has headphones on in the back, mumbling along to a song under his breath and Lucy is playing with a toy Ricky handed her, being really good. “Van's reasons for loving people often involved food.” Wyatt gri

  • Wild Winter   Chapter Twenty-Seven

Monday morning dawns bright and sunny, looking like a gorgeous day. Val and Van wake up in a wild mood, so excited that they can hardly sit still. They triple check the plan with us, making sure that we will all be there on time. We have to confirm the time with Val six times. As I'm doing her hair, she asks again. “What time are you coming?” “Val, honey. We will be there at eleven.” “You might want to get there a little early.” She tells me, as if my time management skills are so bad that I need a six year old to tell me when to arrive places. “We will get there at ten fifty.” I tell her, putting the bow in

  • Wild Winter   Chapter Twenty-Six

I spend every day by my grandfather's bed and I am there when he opens his eyes four days later. He blinks, looking around confused. “It's okay Grandpa. You're okay!” I tell him, leaning over him to give him a huge hug. “Cal-” His voice is dry and cracky from lack of use, but his words feel stilted. The doctor waned me that he might have to relearn to speak, just as he will have to learn to walk and move correctly. “I love you, Grandpa.” “I- love.. you.” Tears roll down my face. I lean over to kiss his cheek

  • Wild Winter   Chapter Twenty-Five

“Callie.” “Don't ever leave me again.” I sob. “I would stay with you forever, if you'll let me.” He tells me. He sits in the chair, pulling me in his lap. I always love when he holds me like this. I curl into his chest, my hands around his waist. “Callie-” “Let's not say anything.” I tell him softly. Every time we say something, it gets misconstrued or misinterpreted and we use the misunderstanding to push each other away. I don't want that. Not now. I just want him. Like this, I want to be in his arms. I don't want anything to potentially jeopardize that.

  • Wild Winter   Chapter Twenty-Four

He says this, moving closer to me. I have to fight the urge to get up and run away from him. I really don't want to be near him, but I won't back away like a coward. “So much that I could hardly stand it.” I say in a monotone. Actually, I haven't given this slime ball a single thought since my black eye faded and quit being a constant reminder of my stupidity. “Harper cut her hand on broken glass and I have to wait while she gets stitches.” He moves over to me about to sit down beside me. “Unless you want another broken nose, I suggest you stay the fuck away from me.” I sneer at him.
