"Aren't you going back to the city?" Gladwin asked as they enjoyed lunch on the porch of Claire's rented room.
"Why?" Claire replied flatly.
"Aren't you bothered by how much money you're spending every night on this room?" her twin asked, mouth full. Claire just shrugged in response. "I know you're loaded, but that doesn't mean you should waste your money like this. Instead of spending it on lodging, why not donate some to your poor, struggling student of a brother?" he said, grinning.
Claire raised an eyebrow, looking at Gladwin with a mocking gaze. "Don't forget your share of the inheritance is way bigger than mine," she replied, making Gladwin laugh.
After lunch, Claire finally decided to check out. Gladwin, who had driven over in his own car, tempted his twin with a brief trip to a strawberry-picking farm. Naturally, Claire was thrilled at the idea.
It was late afternoon by the time they reached Gladwin's private residence—an apartment in the heart of the city, quite a distance from both Claire's home and their parents' place. Claire felt reluctant to return to her own home, wanting to avoid seeing Antony for a while.
Gladwin's apartment had two bedrooms, and this was Claire's second visit in years. The first time had been when Gladwin had just bought the place and it was completely empty. Now it was furnished with a few essentials, a casual style that perfectly matched her twin's personality.
"Did you hire an interior designer?" Claire asked, settling onto the leather sofa facing the TV.
Gladwin shook his head and mentioned a name with a chuckle. Claire stared at her twin in disbelief. She knew the person he'd named was also a medical school graduate, just like him.
"Are you sure he did this himself, and got such good results?" she asked doubtfully, but Gladwin only shook his head again.
"He got help from his girlfriend, who happens to be a design student," he explained, making Claire's eyes go wide before she rolled them dramatically.
"You guys are just... unbelievable," she said, her tone laced with sarcasm.
"Unbelievable how?" Gladwin asked, curious.
"Complete jerks! You all love using people who are into you," Claire retorted, making Gladwin laugh.
"Sister, you need to know that there are only two types of men in this world."
"If they're not gay, then they're a jerk like you," Claire interrupted, earning an approving nod and a playful wink from her twin, while she just rolled her eyes. "Where am I sleeping tonight?" she asked, standing up and glancing at the two doors facing each other.
"That's my room," Gladwin pointed to the door on his right. "The other room is empty; anyone who stays here uses it. But there's no bathroom there, so if you need one, you'll have to go through the kitchen." Claire nodded in understanding and walked toward the door he'd indicated.
"You can sleep in the living room if you want," Claire said as she entered Gladwin's room, planning to invade his space, leaving Gladwin shaking his head and opting to head into the kitchen to prepare food for both of them.
They decided to have dinner in front of the TV. "I heard from Antony that you submitted your resignation letter. Are you really planning to quit your job?" Gladwin asked nonchalantly.
Claire shrugged while shoveling food into her mouth. "What else did he say?" she inquired, her tone casual but curious.
Gladwin smirked, about to reply, when the phone on the table in front of him began to ring.
"Your boyfriend really has great timing," he said, swiping the green button on his flat screen and putting it on speakerphone. "Yeah?" he answered, placing the phone back on the table and turning down the volume on the TV.
"Any news on Claire yet?" Antony's voice came through, sounding impatient. Claire glanced at her brother, who was trying to stifle a laugh.
"I told you she'd come back on her own. Even a kitten knows where its home is, let alone Claire. Just be patient a little longer," Gladwin replied, receiving a pinch on his upper arm from Claire in return.
How could her twin compare her to a cat?
"I know she'll come back on her own. But when?" Antony pressed. "More importantly, I need to know where she is. Is she okay?"
"Oh God, Sir," Gladwin muttered, glancing at his twin. "Even if you left her in the wilderness, she'd still manage to survive. Especially if you left her in the city. With all the conveniences around, she'd be even better off."
"Enough already, don't worry about her so much. I can assure you, sooner or later, she will come back," Gladwin continued, still speaking in a relaxed tone. "But, Sir," he said, causing Claire to shoot him a look. "If she's still missing by Saturday next week, I suggest you look for a backup fiancée." This earned him a glare from Claire beside him.
"Gladwin!" Claire exclaimed softly, glaring at her twin.
"She might have left because she doesn't want to be engaged to you and is using your behavior as an excuse so she doesn't have to come up with a breakup speech," Gladwin added, unfazed by Claire's glare and pinches.
"Is that so?" Antony asked, sounding downcast. His voice was clearly filled with doubt.
Claire now looked back and forth between her twin and the still-active phone. What if Antony truly thinks she doesn't want him? she screamed inwardly.
"Yeah, that could be it. Claire is someone who can't bear to hurt anyone. Maybe her kindness towards you all this time is just because she can't bring herself to hurt Flavia," Gladwin said.
"Gladwin! You know that's not the case!" Claire exclaimed without realizing how loud she had gotten.
Gladwin laughed, while Antony called out for Claire from the phone on the table.
"Claire? Are you there? Gladwin, is Claire with you?" the man asked in disbelief.
Gladwin simply responded to that question with laughter, while Claire chose to hang up on Antony immediately.
"Why did you hang up?" Gladwin asked, wiping tears from his eyes from laughing so hard.
"What do you mean by that?" Claire exclaimed, annoyed.
"I mean no harm; I just enjoy teasing you two," he replied with a mischievous grin. "Besides, you're both adults. Why are you playing hide-and-seek like this? If there's a problem between you two, you should resolve it by talking to each other, not by playing this ridiculous game. What you're doing is excessive, Claire. You're acting like you're in a long-winded drama with no idea when it will end.
"Listen to me," Gladwin said seriously. "You should be grateful that Antony is head over heels for you. He's been searching for you until all the hair on his body falls out from stress. If Antony didn't love you this much, he could easily look for another woman out there to take your place. I'm sure many women would want to be the companion of a billionaire widower like him. If that happens, will you let him go?" Gladwin's eyes were fixed on Claire, his expression sharp.
Claire didn't respond; instead, she bit her lower lip, feeling confused.
"Just imagine, besides being a billionaire, he's handsome—though not as handsome as me—and he's already an adult. Much more mature than us, age-wise. Do you really think he would stick around with a woman full of drama? I wouldn't want to put up with you, as if there were no better or prettier women out there."
"Gladwin!" Claire exclaimed, annoyed.
"That's why," Gladwin raised his index finger to Claire's temple. "Use your brain properly. Just because your mind is currently filled with love doesn't mean you can't think logically." His comment earned him a pout from Claire.
Claire was about to respond to her brother when the doorbell of the apartment rang. They both turned their heads in unison, then looked at each other with furrowed brows, puzzled.
"Who is it?" Claire asked her twin.
"How would I know? Do you think I have x-ray vision? Even Superman isn't that great," he muttered as he walked toward the door to see who the unexpected guest was.
"Waaaw..." he exclaimed from the door. Claire turned her head and was taken aback to see who had arrived.
"I guess I should go," Gladwin joked to his twin. He quickly grabbed the car keys and his wallet before stepping out of his own apartment. "You two need to make up; stop pulling each other's hair like alley cats," he added before really leaving the two lovebirds.Antony walked in just as Gladwin left the apartment, while Claire stood frozen in place. "How could you...?" the girl asked, confused.Antony shrugged. "Gladwin seems suspicious," he said flatly. He took off his jacket and carelessly tossed it on the bar table before walking over to Claire. "As a twin told that her sister is missing, she's acting way too calm and relaxed. Unlike Richard, who is the complete opposite, though he also said that Gladwin definitely knows you're gone," Antony said as he moved closer to Claire. The girl then sank onto the sofa, tilting her head back to look at Antony, who was staring back at her."Then I thought of something," the man said with a grin on his face. "I asked someone to follow Gladwin
"So, you're going back to the office this Monday, right?" Antony coaxed, gazing intently at Claire. Claire shook her head in response. "Why?" he asked, confused."I don't want to be ignored anymore," Claire said in a whiny tone.Instantly, Antony tensed up. "Honey, you know that's not true. Didn't I just tell you that I didn't mean to ignore you?" he replied.Claire chuckled. She cupped Antony's face with both hands, which still bore a pouty expression. Deliberately, she pressed his cheeks together, causing his lips to pucker out, making Claire laugh even more."Besides, if you resign like that, you'll have to pay a penalty. Don't you care about your money?" Antony continued to try to persuade her, but Claire pulled her hands away and shrugged indifferently."I just need to pay it; it won't be that much," she said flatly. "Besides, what's the point of having a boyfriend who owns the company if I still have to pay the penalty with my own money?""What will you do after you quit? Don't
Claire turned her phone back on after Antony left, and, of course, she wasn't surprised to see numerous missed calls and messages from her mother's number.Antony had reminded her that until their engagement day arrived, they had to act as if Claire was still on good terms with the man her mother had chosen, even though Claire didn't actually have any contact with him. Both Gladwin and Antony even requested that Claire act enthusiastically about her engagement with Joshua Grint. Crafty as ever, Antony had even asked Claire to change his name to Joshua, so it wouldn't seem suspicious. After replying to her mother's messages, Claire immediately turned her phone back off. She'd promised her mother she would come over tomorrow afternoon to help prepare the dress they'd be wearing for the engagement next Saturday. And now, here she was. Taking a deep breath and steeling herself to lie to her mother—the woman who had given birth to her and raised her."Well, you finally showed up. Where hav
H-1 The EngagementThe noisy bustle at Claire's home made her heart pound erratically. While most brides-to-be would feel excited on the eve of their engagement, Claire felt more anxious and on guard. She was happy, of course. Who wouldn't be happy to finally be proposed to by someone they loved and who loved them back? But the fear of her mother's reaction—the rejection she might face tomorrow when her mother sees the person coming in place of her preferred son-in-law—filled Claire with dread. What would happen tomorrow? What if her mother rejected Antony and his family? Claire poured all her worries out to her twin brother. But, with his usual calmness, Gladwin reassured her that, like it or not, tomorrow their mother would accept Antony and his family, if only to save face in front of the guests. Yet, what if Gladwin and their other brothers were wrong? What if her mother's pride, preferring not to have a son-in-law who was a divorcé, was stronger than the embarrassment she'd face
Saturday MorningThe bustle in Richard's home had begun once again. The decoration team was busy preparing everything according to their plan. The chairs that had been stacked the night before were now arranged neatly and draped with beautiful fabric that matched the theme of the event. The food tables were set up, even though the catering service wouldn't arrive for a few more hours. Amidst all the chaos, Claire chose to stay quietly in Gladwin's room, while her twin had just arrived."I should be able to sleep until noon since I have another night shift tonight. Don't you feel sorry for me? My sun-god-like handsomeness could be ruined by dark circles from lack of sleep," Gladwin grumbled to Claire, who had been repeatedly texting him to hurry up, even though the engagement ceremony was still hours away."I'll cover the cost of your eye-bag removal surgery later," Claire replied flatly.Once again, Claire stood by the window, gazing out at the yard of their house."Just because you'r
"Don't speak carelessly, Abby," Julie scolded, frustration evident in her voice. The middle-aged woman began to panic at the thought that the family of her prospective son-in-law might not show up, potentially canceling the engagement at the last minute."Sorry, I misspoke," Abigail replied, shrugging her shoulders.Claire bit her lip to suppress a smile, while Gladwin deliberately flashed a mischievous grin. "But what Abigail said could happen. Maybe they've decided not to come and are canceling this engagement because the bride changed his mind at the last minute," he said nonchalantly."It's been an hour past our schedule, but Auntie's fiancé still hasn't shown up," Abigail complained, her makeup starting to run from the sweat. "I can barely keep it together," she muttered, making sure her voice was loud enough for her grandmother to hear. "Aunty, didn't you accidentally cause a problem that made that guy suddenly not want to marry you?" she whispered, her tone dripping with sarcas
Part 66Julie stared at Richard in disbelief before glancing at the door where her two sons and daughter were gathered. It was now clear that all her children had conspired against her, and this was all under the approval of her eldest son, Richard. What could Julie do now, especially when the highest authority in the Hampton family, her firstborn, was also involved? Her eyes swept over the guests who were stealing glances in their direction. Even without whispering, their curious looks spoke volumes. Julie felt as if she had already lost. Completely!A forced smile accompanied by a feigned enthusiasm—a mere act—was all she could muster. She extended her hand to the oldest Quirino couple and ushered them into the house, where the chairs originally prepared for her chosen son-in-law and future in-laws would now be occupied by Antony and his family. As Julie excused herself to return to Claire, she shot a sharp glance at her only daughter the moment the door closed."So this is your pla
The event concluded swiftly. After the ring exchange, the remaining activities were filled with small talk until all the guests departed for their respective homes. Only the immediate families of Claire and Antony remained, and soon, they, too, returned to their own residences. Now, Antony and Claire's two older brothers were engaged in a serious business discussion. Gladwin had already returned to his apartment to rest, as he had to work later that night. Meanwhile, Julie Hampton was sulking, hiding in her own room.Claire didn't want to be seen as a disobedient daughter, allowing her mother to remain angry indefinitely. She needed time to gather her thoughts and find the right words to ask for her mother's forgiveness, hoping Julie would eventually accept the reality that it was time to let Claire make her own choices. When Antony decided to leave, Claire chose to accompany him. She didn't want to stay home, anticipating the discomfort of facing her mother, especially with her broth
The two teenagers turned their heads simultaneously towards the aisle as they saw an ominous aura spread around them. Moreover, people were now looking in the same direction. Where the woman Flavia and Abigail had not expected to see had just appeared."Why is that woman there?" Abigail whispered to her best friend.Flavia who had been engrossed in her digital camera and taking pictures was now holding it languidly. "I don't know." She replied innocently. She looked back at the photo produced by her hand, choosing to ignore Abigail and her suspicions."Shall we go closer to them?" Abigail asked in a challenged tone.Flavia raised her head again and looked at her best friend with a furrowed brow. As Abigail started to take a step, Flavia held her back by holding Abigail's arm tightly and shaking her head."No, Abby." She said.Instead, she pulled her best friend's hand to walk away from the reception room and left the hall by walking in the hotel's garden area to take some photos as a
"Full?" asked Claire with a furrowed brow.Antony deliberately re-emphasized his lower body so that Claire was wide-eyed. "You know what I mean, right?" Antony whispered in the girl's ear that inevitably made Claire shudder in horror. The man's lips teased her, starting to caress the side of her face so that she unconsciously looked up and gave him the opportunity to explore the slender recesses of her neck."Can I ask for my rights now?" he asked in a pleading tone.Claire shook her head."Why again now?" Antony asked in a whining tone."Your body stinks," Claire said as she wrinkled her nose. "Go take a shower." She ordered as she turned Antony around and pushed him into her room until he reached her bathroom.Antony wanted to resist, but seeing his wife's glare, he finally went in.What's wrong with his wife. Why is it so hard to conquer her? Instead of spending time kissing hot and wet, Claire pushed him into the shower. Antony had hoped they would move on to the next stage that h
"Those two women were the answer to my mother's prayers," she said, anger flaring in her voice.Antony was taken aback. "No, darling. Your mother's prayers will never be answered like that.""Alright, they did come with certain intentions. But can't you see me? To me, they are nobody. In my eyes, in my heart, in my mind, there is only Claire, Claire, and Claire. There's no other woman." Antony coaxed her in a soothing tone.Claire couldn't help but chuckle at that. "Don't sweet-talk me," she replied with a hint of amusement.Antony shook his head. He stepped closer to his wife. Claire still had her arms crossed over her chest, and to maintain some distance from him, she leaned her body back."I'm not sweet-talking you, darling. I'm speaking the truth. If only there were experts who could read my mind and heart, you could ask them. I'm sure they would tell you the truth. And if they lied, I would bribe them to say what I want them to say," Antony said again.Claire rolled her eyes. Ant

Antony stopped his car outside Claire's house and unlocked the gate with the spare key he had kept for a long time.Claire's car hadn't moved from its spot. It was still there since the last time Antony visited his fiancée's home, before Claire's family took her back.Who knows? Maybe Claire could hear the gate opening or maybe not. But one thing was clear: his wife did not welcome him at all because Claire's house felt eerily silent. Was Gladwin playing a trick on him? Who knows if Claire was really back at her house. He opened the front door and stepped inside, greeting her. Once again, there was no response. When Antony noticed Claire's bedroom door slightly ajar, he walked in.Claire wasn't there. All that was left was the small suitcase she had brought from the hotel room."Claire, sweetheart," Antony called out again, but still, there was no answer.Could it be that Claire left again after dropping off her suitcase and saw Gladwin leave? he wondered to himself.Antony continued
Quickly, Anastasia ran after Antony. She called his name repeatedly, but Antony chose to ignore her until her stiletto heels finally brought her close to him. She immediately reached out and grabbed Antony's arm, but he harshly brushed her off."Antony, listen to me. Please. I'm really sorry. I apologize," she said in a whiny tone. The woman tried to grab Antony's hand again, but he pushed her away once more, causing her to fall and kneel on the cold marble floor. Not wanting to give up, Anastasia wrapped her arms around Antony's legs, forcing him to stop."I'm truly sorry," she pleaded again, her voice desperate. She begged for the man's compassion, finally realizing that everything Antony had said in the room earlier was no joke. "I... I..." She couldn't find the words. "I'm sorry, please forgive me," she begged, tears starting to wet her face.Antony looked down at her with a sharp gaze. "Do you realize that what you're doing has crossed the line?" he asked in his cold tone.Anasta
Antony arrived at a luxurious five-star hotel located not too far from his family's hotel. As soon as he parked his car, he headed straight to the room Letizia had mentioned when he contacted his cousin earlier.Inside the lavish room rented by his ex-wife sat Antony's mother, Brianna Quirino, alongside her husband, Mr. Arthur. Meanwhile, Letizia stood with her hip leaning against the bar chair, her arms crossed over her chest.Don't ask where her children and husband were. Antony guessed that his sister-in-law was waiting for them somewhere. The three family members displayed different expressions, surely with different thoughts filled with questions that might mirror what was in Antony's own mind.On the other side of the room, right above the sofa facing away from the window, two women sat side by side. One was Anastasia, a woman he had pretended to date for work purposes. The other was his ex-wife, the woman he once loved deeply, who had given him a beautiful and devoted daughter.
But then Claire tried to clear her mind. She refused to believe that her mother could be so cruel to her; if that were the case, Claire might end up resenting her mother for the rest of her life.Disloyal? She didn't care about that word. Her face was already free of makeup, and her hair had been released from the beautiful tiara she had worn earlier. Now, the makeup artists helped Claire start to unbutton the lovely gown she had worn, which had so many buttons down the back.Once everything was removed, Claire opened her suitcase, searching for clothes. She decided to clean herself up in the bathroom that was in the dressing room.Feeling refreshed after showering and washing her hair, Claire put on the clothes she had chosen: a pair of jeans and a loose shirt instead of the dress Antony had picked out for her to wear on their honeymoon, which they were supposed to take right after the reception she was now reluctant to attend. No, she wouldn't just surrender herself to her husband a
The events proceeded according to the instructions from the host.Happy? Of course, Claire was happy. Especially seeing Bella's silly antics, who didn't hesitate to liven up the event alongside Gladwin and some of his office friends invited to the wedding, which surprised them as well. After all, Claire's absence from the office had already been quite shocking, and now they were suddenly presented with news of a wedding they had never seen any signs of."I had my suspicions when our big boss showed up at my wedding, and it turns out he was after the cheese in the sandwich," Chand whispered when his friend arrived with his wife. Claire could only smile in response to that accusatory remark.A snippet of the song that Adaline was singing on stage made Claire and Antony hold hands tightly, hoping that no obstacles would disturb them in the future.Guests began to dwindle. Amidst welcoming guests, they also took several photo sessions—not just with colleagues but also to capture moments w
