Phil arrived at school at 8:00 AM with dark bags under his eyes and a sickly color on his skin. He did not fall asleep again after he had the horrifying nightmare, terrified that he may be subjected to such a nightmarish experience again.

Although the school campus was a private institute, it was rather old and a little dilapidated, a place where ghost stories and mysterious tales were often heard. From weird kids to athletic jocks the school was full of students since it was the only middle school that is available in the city; it was home to this numerous kids.

                                "Good morning Phil."

                Greeted Eric.

Eric was one of the boys in school that has a high pedigree. He had an approachable personality a friendly aura surrounding him, and a charming look that most of the girls in school find attractive. His grandfather was once a renowned archeologist and his father was a famed biologist. Many could say that he has it all, looks, money, and charm.

Phil yawned and greeted his best friend.

                                "Hey, morning Eric."

"Did you stay up all night again? Bro look at those bags, Jess won't like you back if he sees you like that."

"Shut it, I had a terrifying nightmare and nearly pissed my pants. I don't want any criticism coming from you."

                Eric laughed at Phil's misery.

"Hey, it's just a dream don't think too much about it."

"Yeah I know, but it just felt so real."

                Phil shivered remembering his nightmare.

While the two were slowly walking towards the entrance of the school, a commotion can be heard on one of the side gardens. A girl with unkempt hair was being bullied by several boys her book was getting passed around and the contents of her bag littered on the grassy field.

"Mark and his gang are at it again huh."

"Yeah, you better be careful Phil. I heard that Mark has a thing for Jess, best keep it a secret that you like her from him."

While the two were talking, a girl with a short stature walked to the gang and kicked the boy holding the book in the shin. The boy flinched from the pain and dropped the book they were passing around. The girl picked it up and threatened the bullies.

"Buzz off Mark! Or I will have the principal kick you out of school once and for all."

                                "OOoooh, I'm scared."

Mark jokingly waved his hands, while the other boys were laughing.

"Listen here shorty, you're lucky that we're in school and your father has a little power in this city. Or else I have already beaten you into a pulp."

Mark threatened the girl. As he was about to grab the girl's collar Eric called out to him.

"Mark I suggest you don't do that."

                Eric said calmly.

Mark glanced at Eric with annoyance and was about to berate him. But realized the identity of the boy that warned him, he slowly withdraw the hand that was about to grab the girl's collar. He then turned around and walked away angrily kicking the trash can that was on his way while his gang followed.

"Thanks for that Eric, but that was unnecessary."

The girl thanked Eric while she gave the book back to the girl with unkempt hair.

"Here's your book back Sam, and better stay clear of Mark and his gang next time."

The girl with unkempt hair, Samantha bowed her head and thanked the short girl awkwardly. She hurriedly picked up all her belongings scattered on the grassy field and then ran towards the library with her head down.

"Poor girl, she's always getting bullied by Mark and his gang."

The short girl sighed as she sympathizes with Sam's situation.

"You can't always protect her Sonja, she needs to learn how to protect herself."

                                "Good morning Phil."

Sonja greeted Phil with a beautiful smile showing her dimples and sparkling eyes while she ignored Eric's warning completely.

"Morning Sonj, I know that Samantha is a good girl but you better be careful with Mark, you never know what he will do."

                                "Okay"

Sonja nodded while Eric felt betrayed because Sonja did not heed his advice just shook his head side to side.

The trio's conversation abruptly ended when the school bell rang. They ran towards their lockers located in the hallway and took all the things they needed.

"Well see you on lunch break Phil."

                                "Bye Phil."

Eric and Sonja made their way towards their classroom.

While the students hastily made their way to the different classrooms, Phil was left in the empty hallway as he sluggishly made his way to his.

Phil feeling sleepy yawned but he saw something in the corner of his eye that put a stop to his yawning. He felt that a shadow was staring at him and he cannot help but smell something fishy in the air, he suddenly flinched paralyzed with fear in the middle of the empty hallway, flashbacks of the traumatic dream invaded his brain as he slowly twisted his head to look at the shadow.

"Mr. Craft I believe you have a class to attend to."

                A hand grasped his shoulder.

Phil gasped and turned his head around and saw a black bald man with dark eyes.

"Mr. Seth, I'm sorry I was thinking about something."

Phil answered as he glanced sneakingly at the corner where he felt that something was staring at him. To his relief, there was nothing there at all, not a shadow or the fishy stench he could smell before.

                                                'I must be tired'

                                He thought

"Well hurry along mister Craft lest I will give you an assignment about the history of this school."

Phil ran towards his classroom in haste at the thought of the punishment this strict History teacher threatened him.

"And don't run in the hallways."

Teacher Seth yelled at him as he made his way to the stairs.

Standing in the middle of the empty hallway, teacher Seth looked at the corner where Phil felt something was staring at him.

                                "Strange"

He furrowed his eyebrows and muttered to himself as he walked away.

As morning classes were ongoing, Phil who is seated at the rearmost seat felt his eyelids grow heavy, he mustered all his strength to open his eyes but the feeling of drowsiness assaulted him, his head bobbed up and down as the voice of his teacher slowly muffled out and he completely fell asleep.

Phil abruptly woke up as his senses were telling him he was in danger, alert and a little dizzy on his abrupt awakening he stood up on his seat and looked around but noticed the oddly empty classroom. Seats were carefully tucked under their tables and the blackboard was wiped clean, he saw the afternoon sunlight as the skies were colored in an orange hue, he slowly calmed himself down but strangely the feeling of danger was still clawing on him as if a predator was lurking around waiting to pounce on its prey the moment it puts its guard down.

                                                'BANG'

The classroom door swung open and Phil was startled. He quickly raised his chair ready to smack whatever creature comes out of the door. A man in a Janitor uniform with a white cap entered the classroom and was shocked that someone was still there, he nodded at Phil as Phil slowly put the chair back down.

Feeling relieved Phil exhaled then took a breath as he reached out for his bag ready to go home. Phil slowly walked towards the door but as he got nearer towards the exit the feeling of danger grew, his breath was getting shorter, and the beat of his heart was getting louder and louder. As he passed by the janitor a fishy smell assaulted his nose, a heavy hand riddled with hairy black caterpillars pressed down on his shoulder as he was roughly spun around.

He faced the janitor who now has holes in his skin where black hairy caterpillars were crawling out; its eyes were dead as it slowly opened its mouth. Phil wanted to run but the heavy hand restrained him in place, its mouth now gaping open as a creature crawled out. The abomination that was once his mother loomed above him as its body contorted and the sickening sound of cracking bones and nauseating smell of rot filled his lungs. It swayed as it was slowly getting closer and closer the sound of squelching flesh audible from its slow steps. Phil looked in horror as he saw the face of his mother smiling from ear to ear, its crooked neck bowed down as the abomination tried to speak, it whispered in his ear with its guttural whispers blending with the sweet voice of his mother.

                                "Set Me Free."

The tentacles of the abomination slowly wrapped around Phil while it hugged him with its hands, the fleshy body and the decaying smell of rot slowly suffocated him and snuffed him out of the air. Phil tried to scream but nothing came out as the flesh of the abomination drowned him.

Phil screamed at the top of his lungs and stood up from where he was seated. He heaved violently like a drowning man finally able to gasp for air; cold sweat drenched his back as he tried to calm himself down. After he finally calmed down he noticed numerous pairs of eyes were staring at him. Mrs. Vilbar was staring daggers at him as she squinted her eyes. "Mr. Craft, I hope you have a valid reason for interrupting my class." She stated with clear annoyance in her voice.&nbs

Phil arrived at Seth's office; he knocked on the door and waited for permission to go in. "Come in." Seth's voice called. Phil went in and saw Seth sitting at his desk wearing white gloves and reading a clay tablet, signs of weathering and broken-off pieces were easily noticeable as the piece was clearly archaic. Phil looked around and saw shelves of books pertaining to human psychology and the history of cultures, the room was filled with the smell of dust and musty old books similar to a library.

Two days passed and it was Phil's birthday. Phil was still a little pale since his nightmares didn't end, but now he could understand a little what his nightmare seem to mean because of the discussion he had with his teacher Seth. Although he could not stomach the realistic sensations of being tortured in his dreams he was somewhat slightly accustomed to it, although he still shivers on the thought about it. Both of his parents took the day off to be with him and that made him very happy, Phil knows that even though they are very much busy they still love him. He watched with glee as people he had not seen for a year came and joined him for his 13th birthday.&

Liber Somniorum is an old book that contains the mystery of dreams and how to navigate its plains. It explains how the plains of dreams are divided. First is the 'Shallows', a place where you will find yourself at the beginning of your sleep, the outside can influence your dreams and manipulate them based on your understanding, for example, the sound of water dripping outside can be projected in one's dream. Second is the 'Plain of Desire and Idea', it is the largest part of the plains and the most crowded, this is the place where your normal dreams happen. The third is the 'Deep', a place where people find themselves deep asleep that they experience no dreams at all. Next is the so-called 'Twilight Zone', a place filled with miasma that comes from the abyss, the miasma induces nightmares in the people who come in contact with it, the twilight zone on occasion erupts thus sending miasma toward

Eric woke up in cold sweat; he clutched his head in pain as he remembered the shadow hands that grabbed the white figure. But even though he was afraid some part of him was curious, curious to see if the answers he was looking for can be found in the abyss. Eric walked out of his room and made his way downstairs, the house was oddly quiet, he looked at the clock and to his surprise, it was already noon thankfully it was a Saturday and there was no reason for Eric to go to school. Eric made his way towards his father's private laboratory, his father was not home at the moment and Eric guessed that his father must be at the institute and working today, he slowly walked towards a room in the far corner o

Phil looked around him and smiled contently, he had achieved his goals in coming to the 'Plain of Sleep'. Curious about everything surrounding him, he swam around and looked everywhere. Phil remembered about what was beyond the shallows that his grandfather had seen and he wanted to see it for himself, at first he swam slowly, he felt like he was swimming in syrup and that it was hard to move around but he persevered and arrived at the 'shallow'. Phil looked up towards the sky, but to his surprise what he saw was not the sky his grandfather was talking about, but a reflection of himself. The surface of the shallows was like a mirror, he found it odd since his grandfather di

It was already the next morning when Phil woke up tired and hungry, he was confused since he was asleep the whole time and he soon discovered why this was the case. Traveling in the plains of sleep depletes your energy since 'Lucid Divers' do not connect to their tethers and directly use the energy of their souls resulting in the diver feeling exhausted once he wakes up rather than refreshed like the normal dreamers. Phil walked out of his room to head downstairs and eat his breakfast since he was famished. When he arrived he found that his parents were packing their respective bags. "Mom Dad where are you

Phil froze as the old man's embrace grew tighter. "Set... Me... Free... Phil..." The old man grew thick black tentacles in his back, his face melted in a black puddle revealing dark holes as numerous as honeycombs on his head. Moments later black caterpillars crawl out of the holes on the old man's face. The caterpillars were abominations as well, their bodies are filled with black hairs, and their heads were that of Phil when he was young crying to his grandpa while others were smiling. "Look for another cave boy. I do not trust that cave anymore, the prisoner might have planted a trap for you inside the black goo." Phil nodded upon hearing what Ferox has to offer. He swam inside the walls of the prison and decided to head towards the opposite side from where the past cave was located. It took Phil almost all of his current energy to arrive in a habitable cavern. Before he entered he stared at the prisoner that was lying with its head down inside the black goo, bubbles of air could be seen popping up near its mouth located in its belly. Phil could not believe how a crazed being could be cu

After overcoming his dejection, Phil attentively listens to Ferox's explanation of how to properly control his violent urges. "Okay boy, first things first. Do not be overwhelmed by your cruel urges. No matter what the voices inside your head whisper, do not do it. Even if the sigil is not activated, the urge to do violent things is magnified because of its presence. One more thing, this does not apply just to those that are around you, but to you as well, your body to be specific. For example, if you are in a situation where you want to scratch yourself because of a minor inconvenience and the sigil activates, you might end up with heavy injuries due to not being able to control yourself and scratch yo

The feeling of weightlessness overwhelmed Phil, the biting cold of the dark embraced his bloody body. He lays unconscious in the ever-expanding darkness. But suddenly a bright red glow tore the peace that was brought by the endless dark. "AHHHGGGG!!" Phil clutched his left eye which was throbbing in pain. "AHH!! Why is this happening, I...I thought I was dead."&

Still, the headline was about a serial mass murdered on the loose, the newest victim was a boy found dead inside a bathroom in a convenience store. I flipped the page as I grew tired of waiting. I looked to my left and right and saw both my parents and Eric, sitting perfectly still on their seats. Thankfully my parents were not trying to dirty the floor anymore, must have used up al

"Ferox? Who are you? I don't know you. Where did En go?" Confusion painted my face, hearing the deep and brutish voice that had replaced En's calm and gentle voice. "I'm here Phil. Sorry for leaving you like that. The being tasked me with contacting Ferox to try and teach you to use your energy more efficiently." I sighed in relief after hearing En's voice. The sky was crimson on an eternal afternoon, the sun was halfway set beyond the horizon. A red haze filled the air as the smell of blood filled my nostrils. The caw of legions of crows is the only sound that could be heard. Dry bones of various creatures lay strewn all over the floor as the crow themselves help pick whatever flesh remains on them. The sound of cracking was audible as I walked towards a spire of blood and gore, watched by the crows with their dark black eyes. Countless lifeless bodies piled up in large numbers slowly decaying, from the most recent kill at the top to the dry bones at the bottom. A figure sat on a throne of bone, adorned only with the beings that were adequate to enterta

I woke and saw that my energy bar was almost full. I stared at the ceiling of the cave, thinking how far I will go in the next attempt and how long would I be trapped inside this prison. I wondered if ever I will be successful in leaving this place or be like Eric’s mother, forever trapped inside the abyss of dreams. Although I have been trapped here for almost a day now, the lack of sunlight or any light for that matter makes you confused of what time of day it was now. The only source of luminous light I could see was Eclaireuse’s barrier. Although I was given the power to see in the darkness which I only noticed after being trapped inside this dark abyss and since I could not freely use my power in the real world, for that I was thankful or I would be utterly blind navigating inside this prison with a dangerous guard just outside the confines of the cave.&

The multiple eyes on the giant abomination started to open and move erratically. The prisoner tried to defy the force that was making it kneel down, the mouth that was located near its abdomen started to take in air, large amounts of goo started to seep out of its body. En shouted inside my head to take shelter and cover my ears. The prisoner with all its might yanked the chains that bind it and screamed on the top of its lungs. Its deep below shook the surroundings, my ears started to bleed while my head started to fill up with malicious thoughts. En tried with all his best to keep me sane while Eclaireuse although a little exhausted used her remaining soul force to create a barrier.&nb
