Eugene's POV
I leave my plate on the dining table and head for the library. Melissa never comes in here, so this is my safe place. She says, "It's just boring people who go to the library". Well, if that makes me a boring person, so be it. It has never been my goal to impress my sister with anything I do.
I scroll through the books in the library until I come to my favourite section, Mystery. I always love the thrill that comes with not knowing what's going to happen next. You can make it more interesting for yourself if you start to wonder what is happening and what will happen. I take a few glances through the books on the shelves and take a book that looks the most interesting out of all the books I saw. 'In the Woods' by Tana French.
I go to my usual spot in the far corner of the library. It has a bay window overlooking the breathtaking Miami scenery. Our house resides near the sea, and we need to drive for about ten minutes to get to the main road that leads to Miami. I like being far away from the city because I don't like girls swooning over me and trying to get my number. I love to look at the city from afar. It is much more relaxing.
I start reading my newly picked book, and it kicks off with a sudden bang of mysteries one after the other. I was so intrigued by the book that I lost track of time. As soon as I completed the book, it was already past 6 o'clock, and the sun was beginning to set. All the colours you could dream of hung in the sky as the sun breathed out his last light for the day and night fell. As soon as it was dark, I heard two cars pulling up in front of the house. Great, mom and dad are back. Welcome to another night of hearing about business deals and my sisters' exciting day with her friends at the beach. I can't wait to hear all about it. Reluctant, I go to put my book back in its original position before I leave the library and head for the dining room.
As I walk into the dining room, mom, dad and Melissa were already seated at the table. When they noticed me, their attention shifted towards me, and Melissa, as usual, was the first to speak.
"What have you been up to the whole day long?" She asks cockily. Her way of trying to rile me up, and sometimes, she succeeds.
"I was reading in the library. I didn't feel like doing anything today." I say, trying to sound as unannoyed as possible.Melissa looks at me and does her signature overdramatized sigh. "You never feel like doing anything at all with your life.""Oh really?" I ask with a smirk. "At least I'm productively getting some new grammar into my head. What have you been doing the whole day? Tanning at the beach and flirting with more than twenty guys again?"Melissa gives me the annoyed pout she always gives me when she knows what I say is true. I know her too well to be fooled by the little schemes she always tries to pull. She doesn't have a boyfriend, and all the boys in Miami are constantly around her. Heck, I won't argue. My little sister is a true beauty with her almost platinum blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. She looks a lot like our mother, but she's got the attitude of our father. My father is very stubborn, and whatever he says goes. There is no room for arguments. I, on the other hand, got both my mother and father's attitudes. I'm stubborn, but not like my father, and I'm smart, like my mother. I know when to stop and when to go other than Melissa.
We sat in silence for what felt like half an hour before my father and mother started talking silently with each other, something they usually don't do. Melissa and I gave each other sceptical looks before we looked back at them, and they looked at us. My father was the first to speak, and I could instantly tell it had something to do with me. Now, this doesn't look good at all. What did I do this time, or yet, what haven't I done this time?
"Eugene."
Oh gosh, here it goes. I'm in for it now.
He interlocks his finger together and places his hands in front of him, and looks at me. "Father ran into an old friend today at work in Paris. You should know him. It's Dominic Crimson. He's one of the few successful businessmen partners I have, and his wife is the famous fashion designer Clementine Crimson..."
"Where are you exactly going with this father?"
"You see, Eugene, Dominic gave me an invitation to his private restaurant in Paris. It's very exclusive, and I would like you to join me, your sister and your mother on going to a dinner party with the Crimsons'."
My annoyance was starting to surface, but I tried to suppress it as much as I could."Father, you know I don't like these kinds of things."
"I know, I know, but please, at least just this once. I'm making an announcement at this dinner party, and it involves you. Please consider."
I look at my father for a while before I shake my head in defeat. "Alright, fine. I'll go. Just as long as it's just us and the Crimsons' attending this party."
Father's face instantly brightens up, and he sits back in his chair again. "Then it's settled. The dinner party is tomorrow night. We depart in our private jet around six tomorrow morning. I'd like to have you freshened up for the party which starts at eight tomorrow night. You'll have enough time to get ready before the party starts. We'll be landing around 3 o'clock in Paris. Make sure you are packed and ready to stay in Paris for a few weeks."
"A FEW WEEKS!" I shout. This is complete madness! "I thought you said it was only a dinner party?"
"Well, we'll be staying with the Crimsons' for a few weeks because I have some urgent business matters to attend to in Paris which will take me a few weeks to complete. See it as a vacation in the City of Love. Who knows, maybe you'll even find yourself a wife while we're there."
I sat on my chair. I couldn't believe what I've just heard. A few weeks in Paris? Great, just what I needed. More attention from other girls around the globe. Thanks, dad. You really know how to ruin my mood completely.
Sitting at the table, I couldn't control my anger anymore, so I excused myself and went to my room and decided to get rid of my rage by listening to music and sitting on my balcony overlooking the sea scenery as well as Miami. A few weeks? That's the longest I'll ever be away from home for business. What business could ever take that long to finish? It just doesn't make sense at all.
Overtook by my emotions of rage and confusion, I feel myself slowly drift to sleep in my hanging bed on the balcony before everything goes black, and I'm fast asleep with so many questions rummaging through my head.
Rose's POV I almost choke on the water in my mouth as soon as the words left Papa's mouth."You've got to be kidding me, right?" Papa sighs and shakes his head."Rose, I assure you, I'm not. I invited my good business friend over for a dinner party at Célèbre restaurant d'Or. I'm making an announcement at the dinner party, and it involves you." I look at Papa for a few seconds and sigh in defeat.Gosh. I hate when he gives me no choice but to do as he says. "Alright, I'll go." Papa smiles, happy with my answer.&n
Eugene's POV The first thing I noticed when I stepped into the foyer was a family of three. A man, who I assumed was Dominic Crimson, father's good friend, was standing to the right whilst two women stood on the left side of him. The one I could tell was Clementine Crimson because my sister has her whole clothing line in her closets, and Melissa has shown me a few photo's of her to give me a heads up about the Crimsons'. The other woman was standing with her head bent down, but as I was looking at her, she lifted her head and looked into my eyes. She looked very much like Clementine and a little bit like Dominic, and then it hit me. Father never mentioned that the Crimsons' had a daughter! What have I gotten myself into? She looks like one of those girls who will follow me around the whole time. Still, that doesn't help the fact that we are staying with them for a few weeks! I'm goi
Rose's POVAs soon as I walked into my room, I locked the door and started pacing up and down. That was awkward. Eugene might be handsome, but he is cold-hearted. I could see it in the way he looked at me when I walked towards him. I didn't even do anything to deserve the way he just looked at me! Luckily, I searched the web for information about him before I greeted him. I found that he dislikes all girls because of personal reasons, and I went on some girl called Cassidy Opera's Instagram, where she posted a photo of him reading a book, so I assumed he liked to read. I think he might be thankful that I don't want anything to do with him because I sure am.I look at the time on my wall clock. It's almost 4 o'clock. The make-up artist and hairstylist Mama arranged will be arriving soon.
Rose's POVEugene took me to the seat next to Papa and drew the chair out, indicating I may be seated."Je vous remercie, Eugene.""Don't mention it."He gives me a forced smile before he walks to the seat opposite me.I know he is only putting on a show for his parents, but who am I kidding? I'm also putting on a show for my parents. It didn't take long for everyone to be seated. As soon as everyone was at the table, the waitresses started serving the starters. I could see the waitresses eyeing Eugene, but he didn't look at them even if they wanted him to. Well, it was nothing less than what I expected it from the cold heir.
Rose's POV I didn't even wait for the driver to open my door when we arrived at the villa. I rushed into the house, up the stairs and into my room, locking the door. I ran to my bed and cried. I didn't care if my make-up ran onto my clean sheets. I didn't care what the household maids thought of me at that time because I knew they saw me rushing to my room. I didn't care at all.How could Papa sell me out like that? HOW?! I'm his only daughter, and he treasures me so much. I know this because he tells me that every day of my life. Or was that all a lie? If he cared about me that much, he wouldn't sell me off like that. He would ask me for my feelings first. That's the Papa I know. Not the one who announced the wedding between Eugene and me tonight. That's not my Papa. I cried. I
Early the following morning, I heard a knock on my door. Still struggling to wake up, I put on my bathrobe and walk to my locked door unlocking it. While opening, I could smell the oh so familiar perfume of Mama and looked up at her. She gave me a heartwarming smile, and I smiled back as nicely as I could because I could barely open my eyes. "May I come in?" She asks politely. "Sure." I step away from the opening of the door to give her some space to come into my room. Although she is as skinny as a broomstick, I still make way for her out of respect. She walks around my room and sits on one of the sofas. She folds her legs casually like she always does and looks up at me.Oh boy. I know that look. I'm so in trouble this time. I give her a sheepish grin as she opens her
Two hours later, after taking a relaxing bath and dressing up for the day, I meet mama and the rest downstairs at nine o'clock. They were all gathered in the living room, chatting with one another. Papa and Alistair stood in the far right corner, away from the rest, along with Eugene nodding his head from time to time. I assumed they were talking about the business they had to do these following weeks. I shake my head.In the world of businessmen, business is never finished. It didn't take long since I came into view in the living room before Coraline invited me to sit with her, Mama and Melissa. They chit-chatting while waiting for the men and me to finish. The things we women do to waste time.I walk over towards them and seat myself next to Meli
Breakfast was long and uncomfortable. The maids kept on giggling like little girls whenever they would see Eugene or come near him. It's so annoying. It's not annoying because I like Eugene or anything; it's annoying because the giggling didn't stop for one second. Sure enough, it didn't disturb anyone else except me. Everyone was chatting and having a great time. Meanwhile, I was struggling to control my annoyance and confusion. And who else's fault could it be if it is not Eugene's? After breakfast, I went up to my room to cool down. I just needed a little time for myself. My bed looked welcoming with its softness, so I invited myself to lie down. My thoughts overwhelmed me.What was Eugene thinking? What was going through his mind when he did that? Was his intention only to scare me? My
Two years later"Rose, could you stop preparing things and sit down? It's not good for you to walk around like this."I peered at Mama as I sorted through all the fruits in the bowl,"I'm almost finished."As I reached to put the rest of the fruits in the bowl, Eugene grabbed my hands, forcing me to look at him."Dear, I'm not usually one to tell you what to do, but I think you should listen to your mother this time.""But,"I pouted as I glanced at the fruit,"I'm almost finished."
Rose’s POVI woke up to a throbbing pain in my right shoulder and a heartbeat monitor beeping. The sudden bright light that filled my vision as I opened my eyes was enough to make me blind. I squinted my eyes as I studied the room I was in and sighed in relief when I realized I was back at the hospital. We’ll more in the hospital than at the hospital if I studied my situation correctly.I groaned as I tried to sit up in the bed, the pain from my shoulder now spreading to the rest of my arm. Ugg, what is this pain?I looked towards my arm and noticed it was bandaged and hanging in a sleave. Oh, yeah. That right. I was shot. Yesterday? Two days prior? I don’t know how long I’ve been knocked out, so I’ll have to check the date on my phone.
Eugene's POVAfter I was called to the security room, it felt like ages before I could return to her room. In fact, I think only ten minutes have passed since I left her room, but that is enough time for anything to happen.I sighed and opened her door, expecting to see her still sitting on the bed, but she didn't. I studied the room, but I didn't see her anywhere. I looked towards the bathroom and saw a closed door. Maybe she went into the bathroom?I walked over to the door and knocked twice. "Rose? Are you in there?"I waited for her to answer me, but I heard nothing. I knocked again. "Rose? Is everything ok?"
After about a fifty minutes drive, we arrived at the harbour. The taxi driver didn’t want to go further into the vicinity. He dropped me off at the nearest place he could stop. I climbed out of the car, paid him, and watched as he drove off back into the city. I turned around and studied the harbour. I get why he didn’t want to go further because this was an abandoned harbour and no doubt someplace where the mafia people gather to collect their shipments. Now, if I wanted to commit a crime, this would be the place I would go.I took a deep breath and entered the vicinity. I couldn’t hear anything except my footsteps that echoed as I walked. It was high tide, so the ocean didn’t even move, and there were no seagulls in the sky. Everything was completely silent.I walked until I found a clearing where I saw Cassidy standing
7 months laterI was holding Lacey firmly in my hands. Not even a few hours ago, I was rushed to the hospital, and they had to do emergency surgery to get her out because I couldn’t give natural birth to her. The doctors told me I might die if I attempted to give natural birth because my body was too frail. Eugene was next to me and panicked when he heard I might die, so he lectured me. His outburst led to the nurses taking him away to calm him down while I was taken to ICU.Now here, after everything, here she was. Our beautiful baby girl. I rocked her in my arms when the door to my room opened, and in walked Eugene. The second he walked into the room, he paused in his steps and looked at me and then at Lacey. He rushed towards me, or rather, towards Lacey, and sat next to my bed. He looked at Lacey with utter admiration. I coul
Rose’s POVIt’s been nearly six months since I’ve been released from the hospital. The doctors kept me there for supervision for two weeks to make sure I was stable to be living my life again. After they took the bandages off my head, the blow to my head was still visible. The doctors told me that it would take about three more months for the wound to my skull to heal completely. So, I went for monthly checkups to make sure it was healing correctly. I also received my medicine for it during those checkups. The doctors also put me on anti-shock medication, saying it would help prevent any side effects from my blow to my head.I was grateful that I could receive such good treatment from the doctors. Eugene made sure that they took great care of me. He was also back to being himself, albeit more considerate and concerned for my well-being than he was before. Me
Rose’s POVI stared at him as he stood at the door. He didn’t even look at me as he found his toes to be more important than his wife sitting in a hospital bed. He said nothing for the entire time he stood at the door. Why? Am I not important anymore? Are you so disgusted with me that I’m not even worthy of being looked at anymore?I felt the warm train of tears streaming down my face as I stared at him. I don’t know how long I’ve been in a coma, but seeing him like this just made my heart ache.Eugene slowly looked up at me. But when he saw me, he suddenly turned around to leave again. I needed to speak with him. I had to!I gathered up my courage to speak, even though I knew it would come out as shuddering w
Eugene’s POVIt has been a month since Rose’s accident, and she was still in a coma. Eric phoned my parents the night things spiralled out of control, and I sat on the hospital floor wailing. My parents rushed over as soon as they could. Needless to say, they were shocked to see the state I was in. My mother sat on the floor, comforting me. Father stood next to me and placed his hand on my shoulder to comfort me in his own way. I was a complete mess – still am. I did not want Rose’s parents to find out about what had happened, but mother insisted that they had to know. I know I was being selfish, keeping everything to myself to protect myself from the judgements I would receive from them. Luckily, Melissa was still in Paris, so my mother phoned her instead. It just so happened that she was having dinner with them when my mother called her. If I knew anything, it was that Melissa would try her utmost t
Eugene’s POVI slugged back to the house, where I found Cassidy enjoying a glass of wine, smirking at me. I glared at her.“You planned this, didn’t you?”Cassidy looked at me then studied the wine in her glass.“I don’t know what you are talking about.”“Bull. You know what I’m talking about!”I yelled at her. She didn’t look fazed at my outburst in any way.“Eugene,”she said, drinking the last bit of wine in her glass.
