Suzanne knew that she just had to cheer Beatrice up and make her to return back to her normal joyful and happy self. She liked it as she had started smiling now unlike before when she was just trying so hard to smile. The one on her face now was genuine and Suzanne was pleased by it. Beatrice's expression was also slowly returning back to normal.

"Do you know the activity that we are going to engage in, Beatrice?" Suzanne asked while grinning from ear to ear.

Beatrice too grinned, eager to know what Suzanne had in store for her. "I do not know what it is, Suzanne. Please tell me about it. I am eager to know," she answered.

Suzanne's cheerful nature had infected Beatrice and she had lost almost all of the sad aura surrounding her. A peaceful and calm aura now surrounded her person as she looked at Suzanne in anticipation.

Lucia too looked on. She had been devastated to hear about her mistress's ailment from her own mouth. She had now discovered the reason that Lady Beatrice had been sa

Alexander did not know that his mother would feel as she did after hearing about the situation with Beatrice. She had told him that she felt betrayed because the information about Beatrice's ailment had been hidden from her. After all, Beatrice was her daughter-in-law and like a daughter to her, she said, so she wanted only the best for her."I do not like it as you withheld the information from me, Alexander. What harm could I possibly do with it if you had told me?" she queried."I am sorry about that, mother," Alexander pleaded. "I wanted to tell you and I would have later told you in due time but I was waiting for the right time to tell you about everything. I never planned to withhold the information from you. I would have told you sooner or later, mother.""Alright, I have heard you and I am no longer angry, my son but make sure you keep me informed on any developments in Beatrice's health," Lady Victoria said."As you wish, mother," Alexander conceded. Matilda woke up with a pounding headache. She looked around and found herself in a place that looked like a stone bridge. Where am I? she wondered. Where is this place? It looks strange. The dress Matilda was putting on looked strange to her. She looked down at it. It was green, with a cinched waistline and it billowed out till it reached her ankles. It had lace trimmings on the sleeves and the hem. Even the footwear looked our of place. It was a flat sandal with ropes that were almost up to her knees. Is this a costume? Who is playing pranks on me? She thought. She tried to stand up but she could not. Her whole body ached."Who is here? I need help!" she cried out but there was no answer.Matilda tried to remember how she got here and the memories came flooding back. **********Matilda was a young woman of twenty four years of age living in Oxford city. Matilda's head was reeling. She wished she could go back to that evening in the bookstore and reverse the order of events. She would not have performed the spell. She would not have thought that magic was silly and was not in existence. She could do anything to take it back. Anything at all. Now she was stuck here, back in time and she did not know any way of going back to the familiarity of her life in Oxford city.Matilda looked at the man who called himself Alexander. He was a fine specimen of a man but she sensed that he was a proud man. He seemed to think she was his wife, Beatrice who had hit her head on a stone table and lost her memory. How wrong he was! Well, she would set him straight on that."Look, I know what you think but I can assure you that I am not Beatrice and I do not know her. It was a spell that I unknowingly casted that transported me here. My name is Matilda as I told you earlier and I work in a bookstore in Oxford. You said that this is the year 1431 which mea

Matilda was skeptical about eating the food that was in the plate. Earlier on, she had stepped down from the bed and taken a look at the food on the table. The food had a strange look as was with everything in this place. It looked like some sort of porridge but it was thicker than a normal porridge. On further thought, she decided that it was meant to be like that. After all, nothing in this place looked normal.Matilda's greatest fear was that the food might have been poisoned. She also thought about the red coloured liquid that Alexander had sprinkled on the food. What if it was some type of medicine that turned her head upside down? As for the idea of poisoning, she thought about it more. Alexander had called her his wife, so he would not poison her right? Still she was determined not to eat it. Beside the wooden plate of food on the wooden tray stood a wooden cup of water. She looked longingly at the water. She was very thirsty and not even a drop of water had passed through her

Alexander slammed the door shut behind him. His thoughts were jumbled together as he headed for his chamber. On his way there, he came across his mother.Victoria Thomas was a middle aged woman of fourty and eight years of age. She was short and had a mop of brown curly hair. Neither of her sons looked anything like her. She was a sweet old lady who saw only the good side of people and nothing of their faults. On seeing his mother, Alexander came to a halt."Mother!" he called out."Allie, how is Beatrice doing?" his mother asked.Alexander grimaced. He had always hated the nickname his mother had bestowed upon him since his childhood days. Thankfully, now she only called him Allie in the presence of family only. He pondered on the response to her question. He considered telling her of Beatrice's mental state but thought it wise not to do so. There was no knowing who his mother would tell it to. Beatrice heaved a sigh of apprehension. She did not know how to start telling her sister of the sickness that was currently afflicting her. She did not want Suzanne to panic so she knew that she had to choose her words carefully. She would not want Suzanne to think of the ailment as deadly if not her heart would be dashed. If Suzanne knew something about the sickness, it would be another matter entirely. Beatrice knew that she just had to find a way to tell her about it without raising an alarm in her sister's heart. She knew how much Suzanne cared about people, and when she learnt about Beatrice's sickness, she would be very sad about it. I had better start telling her now, Beatrice thought. If I am to judge by the looks she is giving me, she already knows that I am hiding something from her, and she is about to start panicking. I do not want her to do that so I just have to tell her this instant. "Suzanne, my dear sister, this issue of my sickness is a long story but I will ma

Alexander looked at Beatrice and saw that she was beginning to get angry. He did not expect her to be angry but he knew why she was. She did not like him to take decisions without informing her and he had done exactly that. He had not wanted to tell her before asking her sister to come because he knew that she would have told him to allow Suzanne to stay back in Chester. She did not want to disrupt her sister's life even though she needed her at this low point of her life. She would deny it when he said it but he knew that it was true. After all, she was his wife and he knew her better than anyone so he knew how she thought and how she handled her emotions. For now, Alexander reminded himself that he had to answer Beatrice's question in a pacifying manner. He did not want her to get angry further with her state in the way it was. He had to go gently with her. She did not need to be stressed in this stage of her sickness least of all by him, her husband. "My dear wife, I am sorry for

Beatrice was very surprised as she stared at the person who had just entered into her chamber but at the same time, she was happy too. She was very happy to see her sister, Suzanne whom she had not seen for a while now. She was grateful that Suzanne had visited her now because she was not expecting to see her for at least another seven months to a year. Beatrice knew that she had been warned against overexerting herself but this time, she threw caution to the wind and ran the short distance to where Suzanne was standing, her luggage beside her on the floor. She wrapped her arms around her sister and Suzanne hugged her back too. Before both of them knew it, tears had started to run down their eyes. Lucia watched the two sisters in joy, tears almost coming out of her own eyes too. What a beautiful moment that she had the pleasure to witness. She was overjoyed at the joy of the sisters and her eyes lit up with happiness. Suzanne and Beatrice pulled away after a very long embrace and st

  • When There Is Magic   CHAPTER TWENTY SIX - A SHOCKING PRESENCE

The next morning, Alexander woke up and the first emotion that came to him was relief and then happiness. He was relieved that he had managed to convince Beatrice to go with his ideas and he was happy that the joy of love which the sad aura of these past days had threatened was returning back to them. He was pleased that they had found a common ground to agree upon yesterday. Beatrice was a simple person and she always saw reason with him. Alexander woke Beatrice up and as she woke up, he smiled at her. She smiled at him in return before a knock sounded on the door cutting them off from their loving state. Alexander went to the door and opened it to admit Lucia and the two other maids she had mobilized in. "Good day, Lord Alexander," the two maids chorused at the same time. Alexander nodded in response to their greeting before Lucia greeted him. "Good day, my Lord," she said. Alexander smiled at her, a warm smile that reached his eyes. He bestowed that smile upon Lucia because of

"My dear wife," Alexander muttered as he paced around the living area. "How will I comfort her now? Life has really dealt her a great blow and she is just reacting to it. What will I do now? I am really out of ideas and I do not know what to do. Who will I call for help? Who will I tell about this predicament? I will have to tell the members of this household about Beatrice's ailment sooner or later but i shall wait for a few more days to decide what to do about it."As the volume of Beatrice's sobs increased, coming from the sleeping area and filling the living area, Alexander thought hard and deep. He had searched his brain for a solution but he had not found any. What was he to do then? he asked himself. As he was about to give up, an idea suddenly occurred to him and he resolved to act on it. "This is the best idea I have gotten so far and I shall work on it," he muttered. "When the morn arrives, I shall discuss this issue with Mark and see what he thinks it. I will also ask for h
