Chapter 9

This was the first time Dean had shown such genuine concern for me, and I couldn't help but chuckle; it took a divorce for him to notice I had lost weight.

It felt like I had always put on a good front around him, but the truth was that I was dying.

Before I could respond, Dean received a call and prepared to leave. I was close enough to hear a soft, familiar voice on the other end—Elaine was calling.

She asked when he would be back so they could have dinner together. I shook my head with a wry smile, realizing I had briefly entertained the fantasy that he truly cared about me.

I took a cab back to the hospital and fell into a deep sleep.

When I woke up, Keith accompanied me to a nearby mall to buy a new outfit. I wanted to look presentable when I went with Fred to see my parents tomorrow; I needed to feel vibrant and ready.
