She doesn’t know this man, not really - yet here she is flying to another continent with him.
After the game, Lynn had hammered her with questions about her and Dash’s relationship - ‘how old was he?’ ‘how did they meet?’ ‘how long have they been seeing each other?’ ‘what does he do for a living?’ Lenny knew the answer to the age question by chance because it was in the contract - 28. She told Lynn the fake story of how they met and how long they’d been together. She surprised herself with how vivid of a picture she was able to paint regarding how they managed to keep the relationship private for all these months. She told Lynn that he was the COO of his family’s business but, failed to mention that technically he was her boss or soon-to-be if he indeed got the CEO role that this whole act was for in the first place.
Lenny has lost track of the time; all she knows is that they were in the air by 9:15 in the morning and it’s been many hours since then. Thankfully, the discomfort she had imagined she would experience when she learned the flight was almost 9 hours long had proven to be false. Before this, she had never flown first class before, and the ample space, incredible food, and lounge access had managed to seduce Lenny into a state of bliss and sleepiness.
In her sleepy state, her mind drifts off to a distant memory that was buried deep within her subconscious but, managed to resurface any time she fell asleep in a vehicle; which doesn’t happen very often. In her memory, a faint song is playing on the radio, something heartwarming and mellow. She’s strapped into her car seat in the back and from the rearview mirror she can see her dad’s eyes occasionally wander towards her even though she can’t see the rest of his face, she can tell he’s smiling;
“Big day, baby girl! Can’t believe you’re already starting school. It’s going to be so much fun, I promise. You’re gonna love it, butterfly”, his emerald green eyes are a reflection of her own. Everything smells like lavender.
Suddenly, her comforting dream/memory is hijacked and replaced with another memory; one that she hasn’t thought about in the last couple of years. One that happened a month after Christian had told her he loved her. A lifetime ago.
This time she’s seated in the passenger’s seat next to Christian who is behind the wheel. They’ve been on the road for over an hour now and run out of things to say mostly because Christian was in one of his ‘trances’ where he would block out any external noise and be in his head. Lenny wasn’t sure how safe it was for him to be driving this way but, he had assured her it was part of his creative process and that he did it all the time. Since she didn’t want to obstruct his creative process, she sat quietly in her seat and pretended to be reading a book. Lenny never read books but, she had picked up a copy of “Things fall apart” by Chinua Achebe in hopes to impress Christian’s mother. They had spent the previous day picking out her outfit to be very conservative and he had even given her talking points. Next to him, in his brown denim jacket and loose black vest underneath with a tiger tooth necklace around his neck, his shaggy, dirty blonde hair, and 3-day stubble, she looks like quite a bore.
“Nervous?”,
“Yeah, a little bit. Taking a break from in there?”, she gesticulates to mean from his head;
“Mmhmm. I really want to get some writing done this weekend” “Don’t worry, my mum is going to love you. We’ve come prepared”, he jokes and the last thing she remembers is his hand reaching out for hers and the warm feel of his lips against the back of her palm. She can still feel the light tingle of his stubble brushing against her skin.
“Lenny”, she opens her eyes to see she’s on a plane. She’s not a 19-year-old taking a trip with her boyfriend to his home, she’s a 24-year-old, single mother taking a trip with her fake husband-to-be to a country across the Atlantic ocean. Dandy.
“Lenny, we’re here”, her vision concentrates on Dash’s face and when he speaks she notices a new feature she hadn’t observed before, he has quite sharp incisors that remind her of a character from all those vampire movies she watched as a teen.
Things proceed as they should. Outside the airport, there is a car waiting for them already. Dash and the driver exchange a few sentences in Italian as their luggage is hauled into the trunk of the car, but, the only thing she grabs is ‘Buonasera’. He ushers her into the back seat of the car and follows after her. This is the first time they’re together in a space like this, the glass separates the driver from them and gives a feeling of privacy. Very intentionally, they’ve kept a huge space between themselves. They’re barely 2 minutes in when he gets a phone call and he has an apologetic look on his face when he answers it. She observes him as he speaks, the collar button of his dark navy-blue shirt is unbuttoned and she vaguely wonders why he’s dressed so formally all the time. He’s on the phone with Jen however, he too is observing Lenny in her dressy blouse and vintage long-shoulder bag clearly sporting the look of a tourist. He’s still watching her when her gaze turns to the window and she seems transfixed by all the sights she can see. She looks more excited than she did when he offered her 5 million to be his fake wife and there’s something childlike and innocent about her facial expression.
“I could give you a tour of the city if you’d like. After the wedding”, he offers as he ends the phone call and discreetly puts his phone on DnD. Even though he’s here for work purposes also he’d like to have this one day to himself at least. She nods in acceptance of his offer and resumes her sightseeing. She marvels at the beauty of the ancient buildings, the vibrancy on the street reminds her very much of new york and suddenly a thought comes to her mind. She winds her window down to breathe in the air of Rome, the rush of wind on her face is fresh and mildly flowery.
When they arrive at the hotel, Lenny knows instantly that it belongs to the Behrt-Lehmans. The Bel Posto shares a similar color palette with the company’s brand and it looks similar to their hotel in Manhattan. Same Architects touch.
They check-in to two separate rooms on the top floor; both master suites, more space than they could ask for. The receptionist seems to recognize Dash and even though Lenny can’t understand a word she’s saying, she can tell there’s some flirting going on.
Once she gets her room card, Lenny is about to head to the elevator and her room but, she notices Dash doesn’t collect his room card yet.
“Oh, you’re not checking in now?”, she sounds more concerned than she would have preferred;
“No. Just have a few things I have to take care of first. I’d be back soon”. A sense of abandonment creeps on her and she realizes she doesn’t want to be alone in this unfamiliar place.
“It shouldn’t take long. We could grab a late dinner after and I’d fill you in on all the details you’d need to know ahead of tomorrow. Sound good?”,
“Yeah. Okay–”,
“–I’d call when I’m back. Get some rest”, and with that, she heads to the elevator, and he heads back to the car waiting outside.
Just like he said, he had called a few hours later and they had walked to a quaint restaurant not too far from the hotel. He uses this time to tell her all about his uncle Leonard who was already in his 50s but, desperately trying to pass as a 30-something-year-old. He tells her about his charade of crazy aunties, the kinds of questions they’d probably ask and he tells her about his younger cousins too. They’re walking back to the hotel from the restaurant; he’s trying to teach her simple Italian phrases that she might hear tomorrow when he brings up the topic of the proposal. Somewhere in her mind, she had forgotten about the reason for this trip and she had deluded herself into thinking they were on some sort of a date. But once the proposal topic comes up, she remembers why she’s here and the illusion of romance shatters; replaced with the clear vision of a realist.
He informs her of his plan to propose tomorrow after the wedding, so they could all see, and hopefully, it’d make sense that they’d get married in a month.
His rationale is that by the time they’re back in New York, the whole news would have spread and both his father and Darius would know he’s ready to take on the CEO position.
“Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them” – George Eliot Lenny woke up in frantic sweats and muffled screams. But, she was certain that by noon, she would have willed herself to forget the nightmare ever happened in the first place. It had been months since her last nightmare, maybe even a year. But, it made sense that on this day of all the days she had seen her father’s lifeless body in her dream again. Today, she was going to a funeral. Earlier in the week, she tried everything she could to get out of this funeral situation. She tried lying - that she was having a family emergency and would have to be out of the city. She tried saying the truth - that funerals were triggering for her and she’d rather not be involved in the planning committee of one. None of that worked. The rain doesn’t affect the proceedings of the day since the funeral is taking place at the lighthouse cathedral; one of the largest churches in the city. The weather is in sync with the mood of the mourners. Black limos overshadow the street outside and the church is filled up now with over a hundred people. “Sienna Behrt-Lehman was a friend to all”, “Sienna Behrt-Lehman was a supportive wife, a doting mother, and a builder of her community. She had influence everywhere she went”. The loud sound of thunder intercepts the voice of the catholic priest as he delivers the eulogy. In the front row of the congregation is Arthur Behrt-Lehman; husband to the deceased, Darius; the first son, Dustin; the youngest son and Dash; the middle child. Maybe it’s the evident sound of rain from outside or the overwhelming number of nameless, faceless people in this place but, in an instant, Lenny is taken away from the moment and transported back to 12 years ago. Monday mornings have always been a chore but somewhat bearable before when Lynn used to assist Lenny with picking Hannah up from daycare. She used to take Hannah to their mum’s till later at night when Lenny could come and take her home. Things are different now though with Lynn being too busy with her wedding preparations and Lenny and her mother not being on good terms at the moment. Now Lenny has to drop Hannah at school by 8, head to work, and leave the office by 5:30 in time to pick Hannah up from her school which closes by 6:30. It’s stressful as hell, but it’s worth it. It doesn’t help that paying for this school takes the largest bite out of her measly salary and it’s not even close to home. Right now Lenny is in the queue at the entrance to the school with Hannah in the back seat sipping on a juice box. Drop-off always takes so long and everyone else seems okay with it except Lenny who never fails to press her car horn at every chance she gets. “Ma’am please be patient”, one
Dash: So….how did we meet? Lenny:....at work? Someone introduced us but, then you got called and that was it Dash: lol. no. I mean what do we tell my family about how we met? I’m flattered you remember how we really met before the funeral though. Dash: I remember too Lenny: haha. Oh. okay, we can say we met at a work party? Dash: Nah. I don’t want to tie it to work. Lenny: dating app then? Dash: lmao. No way. No one would believe that Lenny: haha. Ok ok. We can say we met at a mutual friend’s birthday party, something like that. Dash: yh perfect and then we started talking before we realized we work in the same company. Good Lenny: How long have we been seeing each other? Dash: good one. A year? Lenny: too much. How did you manage to hide me for a whole ass year? Dash: lol. Fair point. 5 months? Or 6. It was love at first sight so it’s not weird that we’re getting married so soon Lenny: are we engaged yet? Dash: not yet. After tonight. Maybe in a week Lenny: alright
It took Lenny a solid 45 minutes to decide which one of the dresses to wear. The jade dress made the green in her eyes pop and it had a certain novelty to it that made Lenny feel like royalty. But the drooping back and seductive slit of the pink dress made her feel like a vixen. A rich one. All dressed and made up in simple, glowing makeup and with her hair sleek in a low bun, Lenny is now at the lavish gates which serve as the entrance to where the dinner party is already in procession - the Le fascino. Once at the gate, security personnel descends from the security gate and approaches the open driver’s window of her car. “Hello Ma’am. How may I help you?”, he asks with a southern drawl. For a second, Lenny isn’t sure if she’s got the right place because there was no signage or anything to indicate that this was ‘the Le Fascino’. It looked like private property - like a billionaire’s home. “I’m here for the charity dinner party? Hosted by the Behrt-Lehman’s”, she says and then it
For the rest of the night, Lenny doesn’t ask Dash any questions. They eat the rest of their meal in relative silence, only occasionally talking about things that don’t matter like how good the food tastes in comparison to the fancy food at the dinner and how they looked odd being all dressed up in a fast food restaurant. After eating, he drives her home and they share an awkward goodbye before she gets out of the car and heads inside. Once she steps into her home, she releases a deep breath of both mental and physical exhaustion. She scans her tiny apartment currently devoid of her baby girl and even though she loves the peace, she doesn’t enjoy the feeling of being away from Hannah. It dawns on her that their whole lives would be different in a matter of a year. They would be able to afford a nicer apartment in a nicer neighborhood, she wouldn’t have to borrow money from Lynn anymore, and she wouldn’t have to deprive herself of so much just to put Hannah in a good school anymore. Finally, he’s home. The day had spiraled out of his control at some intervals but, ultimately it went well. Dash pulls into the parking lot of the gates of the private estate he had relocated to only a few months ago; around the time his mother had started to fall ill. His building; one of the modern semi-detached mansions in the estate, looks like all the others; somewhat bland of any personality. It reminds him of the home he grew up in. The one where their father was now alone; without a wife. He parks his car in the garage that contains several others; a bad habit he had; spending so much money on cars. There was the 1997 McLaren F1, the Audi A8, and his favorite - a 1955 Ford Customline that he has never driven once but, this habit was better than the previous habit he used to have; spending so much time drowning in a bottle. “The best seats in the whole stadium”, Toby exclaims gleefully as the group of four make their way to their seats on the 10th row on the 50-yard line. “You didn’t have to do this, Dash”, Lynn is saying but, she is so impressed by the view up here, she doesn’t mean it. Dash has a humble smile on his face as they take their seats. “It was no problem at all. I’m a huge fan of the Knicks”, he lies through his teeth, and Lenny bursts out in laughter out of disbelief. Just as Lynn had suggested, Lenny had invited Dash out to come to see the Knicks game with them, she thought it’d be a good idea because if they were to wed soon; pretend or not, he had to at least have met her sister. Lenny had no idea he was going to put on this ‘I-love-the-knicks’ act and get them such great and expensive seats. Dash and Lenny met up earlier and then came to the stadium together to meet up with Toby and Lynn. From the look in Lynn’s eyes, her first impression of him caught her off-guard. She hadn’t ex
