Ryan dropped his champagne glass on a tray and left the party hall, leaving Layla standing confused. He had neither denied nor accepted her allegations.
“If he isn’t the one responsible and I chase after him, I will lose sight of Harison and Felix. Felix is right there, I could go and confirm then find Harison… But Ryan said my clock is ticking, so he knows about the buying of the hospital… he was the one that gave the order!” Layla realized and tossed her glass aside and ran after Ryan.
She immediately left the hall and ran towards the parking lot. There were too many cars down there, she couldn’t risk going down to find him, so she stood in the middle of the road, waiting for his car.
Ryan’s car came screeching out of the parking lot. His eyes were on his phone, but he luckily saw her on time and swerved to the right.
Layla was grazed by the car and fell to the ground, wincing in pain.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” Ryan yelled as he parked his car and got out. “Do you want to die?” he shouted and walked over to her.
A few people who were outside ran to the scene. Everyone liked a good gossip in the end.
“Is she fine?” one lady asked. Others were already making videos of the scene.
“She is totally crazy, I saw her walk right there and stood on the road. The woman has a death wish,” another man said in mockery.
“Insult her once more and I will have your tongue pulled out of your vile throat,” Ryan turned to the man with cold eyes. “In fact, get the hell out of here, there is nothing to see here. Get the hell out of here, now!” he yelled and everyone staggered back and slowly dispersed, murmuring among themselves.
“People are really scared of you, you must be proud of yourself,” Layla said in mockery.
Ryan sneered at her.
“I am not a child Ryan, help me up,” she said and stretched out her hand and he pulled her up.
“You never answered me. Are you trying to get yourself killed?” Ryan asked angrily.
“You also didn’t answer my question. Did you buy the hospital through Fesser Bank and have them deny my father treatment unless we pay off a thirty-million-dollar debt?” Layla asked, shaking her head in confusion.
“You are in no position to ask that question,” Ryan said and walked away.
“But you are in a position to answer, aren’t you?” Layla said. “You own Fesser Bank, don’t you?”
“Fesser is a jointly owned enterprise, Layla. I saw you talk to two other shareholders earlier tonight, and neither of them were smiling after you left. You might have angered one of them and provoked them to do something that drastic,” Ryan said calmly in his defense.
“True, both of them are shareholders, but if I am not mistaken, you own more shares than them. I am no expert in business, but I know that that makes you the rightly head of the enterprise. So either you made the call or you sanctioned it,” Layla pressed.
“Impressive, you really are your father’s daughter,” Ryan commended her analysis. “However, I have people who handle such matters for me, they can sanction such matters without my presence. Besides, I have no motive to do anything like that. If I recall well, I only just started talking to you when you accused me of that, and you had already angered those other shareholders.”
“But that is also a motive, isn’t it?” Layla said.
“Pardon?”
“Yes, the fact that I didn’t talk to you but was talking to your subordinates, it must have enraged you. The lady you had asked to be your lady just yesterday was now talking to your subordinates, wearing the dress you got her.”
Ryan was silent for a while before nodding. “You are brilliant, I will give you that. But I think you think too highly of your brilliance and miscalculated.”
“Actually, I think you are the one that miscalculated,” Layla said with a smile. “I actually didn’t notice this until I saw Denise tonight, then it all made sense. Now, go with me on this, stop me if I am wrong.
“You have loved Denise since forever, and you started dating at some point, but she leaves you for Felix Fesser, a young man who had just started making waves in the city. It angered you, so to get back at him you bought the most shares in his bank, becoming the owner, but your actions only made people feel more secure and gave Felix more prominence for being able to raise a bank with so much potential you wanted to buy it seeing its future potential. It made everything he did seem like it was a sure investment and he bloomed, so you miscalculated that revenge.
“Now, you want to get back at Denise, so you got me, the best friend of Felix’s ex. You planned to make it look like I was trying to get back at her for stealing Felix from my friend, to get her attention, but then you miscalculated my personality.
“You assumed I would accept so you anonymously sent her a gift as a fan or secret admirer, very expensive jewelry and all, urging her to wear it out to her next event. You then got me the same dress, thinking I was going to accept your offer. You not only wanted to hurt her, you wanted to humiliate her, but you ended up humiliating me… and wasting your money. So genius, tell me, who miscalculated?” Lilian explained and since he didn’t stop her, she knew she was right or very close to the truth.
Ryan looked at her for a while, at a loss for what to say. “I’m going for dinner, we can talk about your grandfather on the way,” he said and got in his car and Layla followed, feeling accomplished.
The ride to the restaurant was rather silent, the atmosphere was a bit awkward in the car.“You said we were going to talk about my grandfather,” Layla broke the silence.“Well, you can start, I will join you when I am ready,” Ryan replied coldly.“So, I beat you in one little argument and you start sulking?” Layla scoffed. “And you wanted me to be your woman.”“What was that supposed to mean?” Ryan frowned.“If you want me as your woman, you have to be my man, and this… this is not how my man would behave,” Layla said and folded her hands.“And how would your man behave? Get drunk? Find another girl and make her your replacement?” Ryan said with a demeaning tone, silencing Layla.Layla sighed as she remembered Harison.“I can’t believe he would do that to me though,” she thought to herself. “And his reason… it doesn’t make any sense. I loved him and I didn’t want him spending too much. And the part about me not spending on him? He told me he hated it when I spent on him before. He al
Ryan wrapped his arms around Layla as they walked past Felix and Denise and left the restaurant, he felt as happy as he looked, and Layla was surprised that he could be this merry.“I am starting to think I like you better when you are drunk,” she joled.“Everyone tells me that,” Ryan laughed as they got to the car. “Am I really that boring when I am sober?”“A little,” Layla nodded. “You are a tight-ass meany when you aren’t drunk, and you are too calculative. For instance, you wouldn’t have made Denise feel like a complete fool the way you did just now if you weren’t drunk.”“Hah,” Ryan laughed. “She did look like a fool, didn’t she? Well, it’s a shame no one got it on camera, I would have loved to see her face when I sober up,” he said, took out his keys and handed them to Layla. “You are driving me home.”“I don’t even know where that is,” Layla complained as she got him into the back of the car.“Th-There’s a GPS,” he pointed at the screen. “I know there is a GPS, I don’t know t
Layla wasn’t surprised by his outburst, she had known something like that would happen, but she was expecting he would have been enraged because she answered his call. In Her head, she was going to make him regret his decision to order everyone to not loan her money. He was supposed to beg for her forgiveness, then she would take her bag and leave, leaving him to regret his actions and hate himself. In the end, she took her bag and stormed out of the house, just as she had planned, but he was the one that asked to leave. As she left the house, she began to rethink what had just happened and slowly dropped her pace as it dawned on her that she might have made a mistake. She quickly called Luke and narrated what happened to him, asking him for his opinion.“He was right though,” Luke said hesitantly. “Your family had been taking loans from everyone to maintain their lifestyles, your sister, your brother, even your aunts. If they had continued, you would have been in much more debt than
Layla ordered a bottle of water. As much as she would have loved to order tequila or something as strong, she didn’t know who she was meeting tonight. She didn’t know if she was going to need to fight her way out of an attempt to sleep with her or if she was going to be meeting someone respectable. “If he is meeting me privately and will only text me the room location when he arrives then that means he has been blackmailed in situations like this because he was trying to help a lady, he is trying to prevent a scandal or something, or maybe he doesn’t want anyone else to know where I last went so he can kidnap me?” he thoughts churned.Layla was still thinking when someone came up to her.“I knew I smelt something foul,” the person said, it was a lady’s voice, and it was laced with hatred and disgust.Layla turned around, wondering what enemy of hers was at the club tonight. “Um… who are you?” she asked, a bit confused.“Are you seriously going to pretend you don’t know me?” the lady
Running out of a taxi cab under a heavy rainstorm, Layla Reynolds ran straight for the door of her boyfriend’s family villa. Her wet, long, curly black hair clung to her face, as she stood waiting for someone to get the door. She squeezed out the water from her drenched gown so she wouldn’t get the villa too messy.Soon, someone opened the door and her green eyes lit up with joy as she saw her boyfriend, Harrison. “Hey babe, sorry I didn’t call before coming,” Lilian said and tried to get in, but Harison didn’t move to let her in, forcing her to take a step back. She looked at him with shock in her eyes. “Haris? Is something wrong?” she asked, confused.Harison looked at her and sighed. “I… I can’t let you in, my dad is in a meeting with someone in the living room, and they can’t see… this,” he said, looking at her from head to toe.“What?” Layla looked at herself, confused. “What is wrong with what I am wearing? Is it because I am wet?” she asked. With a sigh of hesitation, Harrison
After his business meeting with Mr. Wade, Harison’s father, a young man left Mr. Wade’s study, ready to return home, but as he got out of the study, he heard shouting down stairs. He walked to the handrail and looked down at the living room. He recognized Harison, Mr. Wade’s son, and there were two ladies with him.One was drenched and looked like a servant being scolded by her masters. He was about to leave when he heard her voice and stopped. He took a good look at her again and took out his phone. He quickly went on Instagram to confirm his suspicions. “It really is her, Layla Reynolds,” he muttered to himself, getting more and more interested in the conversation. He stood there, watching the trio from an inconspicuous angle, like watching a live drama from the gallery.By the time they were done, he adjusted his suit and began walking towards the stairs. He knew he would see Harison, so he was prepared to not look like he had been spying on them.“Mr. Ryan,” Harison said with a s
Layla went to bed feeling a bit uneasy. She didn’t know if she was safe, but he hadn’t done anything to her yet, she had never heard news about him being involved in such scandals. Although it was tough, she eventually slept. She woke up the following morning and went to the bathroom after confirming she wasn’t dead. She took a quick shower and left the bathroom to find her clothes, but yelped when she left her room only to see him in her bedroom. “OH MY GOD!” she screamed and ran back into the bathroom.“What are you doing?” Ryan asked, confused.“I should be the one asking that!” Layla shouted from the bathroom. “What?”“Yes!” she yelled. “What the hell are you doing in my room?”“Your room?” Ryan chuckled. “I think you might have forgotten something, this is my house, every room in this house is mine,” he said with a slightly demeaning tone.Layla wanted to find a rebuttal, but he was right, it was his house.“Would you leave the bathroom? I like to look people in the eyes when I
Layla sat on the bed, considering the ways out of the mess she and her family were in. She had options, but they were rather few.She took out her phone, not sure if she could handle all this on her own. She needed someone else’s view on it. She dialed a number and it rang.“Good morning, Luke,” she greeted, immediately she picked the call.“Layla calling me before seven in the morning is never a good sign. Layla greeting me first thing after I pick the call is an even worse sign. Layla doing both? There really must be fire on the mountain,” Luke joked. Layla chuckled as her mood lightened. Luke had been her friend since they were kids. His mom used to work for the family as a chef, and even after her death, they had both maintained communication with each other.“So… what’s bothering you? I can tell something’s up, what’s wrong?” Luke asked.Layla sighed and looked at the ceiling. “I don’t know where to start Luke,” she said with a shaky voice. “How about you start from the last ti
