After his business meeting with Mr. Wade, Harison’s father, a young man left Mr. Wade’s study, ready to return home, but as he got out of the study, he heard shouting down stairs. He walked to the handrail and looked down at the living room. He recognized Harison, Mr. Wade’s son, and there were two ladies with him.
One was drenched and looked like a servant being scolded by her masters. He was about to leave when he heard her voice and stopped. He took a good look at her again and took out his phone. He quickly went on I*******m to confirm his suspicions.
“It really is her, Layla Reynolds,” he muttered to himself, getting more and more interested in the conversation. He stood there, watching the trio from an inconspicuous angle, like watching a live drama from the gallery.
By the time they were done, he adjusted his suit and began walking towards the stairs. He knew he would see Harison, so he was prepared to not look like he had been spying on them.
“Mr. Ryan,” Harison said with a smile as he saw him and extended his hand for a handshake. “Are you done with my father?”
“Yes,” Ryan replied and took the handshake. “Your father is really good with beating down prices and debating value,” he said with a soft chuckle.
“So it was a successful meeting then?”
“Yes,” Ryan nodded, “It was. However, I must get going, I have a few things to attend to before the night ends. It was nice meeting you,” he said and nodded at Harison’s companion.
“Forgive my manners,” Harison chuckled. “Evelina, meet Mr. Ryan Martinez. Mr. Ryan, Evelina, my girlfriend.”
“I heard,” Ryan said and took her handshake. “I wish you both the best, goodnight,” he said and left.
Harison looked at Ryan till he was out the door. He then turned to Evelina, “Come on, babe, tonight is a perfect weather for some wildness. With the thunderstorm, no one will hear us,” he kissed her neck and picked her off the ground and took her to his bedroom.
Arriving at his bedroom, Harison tossed Evelina on the bed and began kissing her, breathing heavily, pulling off her gown. He was about to get down on her, but she stopped him.
“What? What’s wrong?” Harison asked with a frustrated groan.
“I don’t know… that Ryan guy…” Evelina said, a bit lost in her thoughts.
“What about him?” Harison groaned.
“He said he had heard when you told him about me… from who?” she asked, wondering.
“Who cares? People talk,” Harison said and began kissing her neck again, trying to get her back in the mood.
“Or maybe it was our talk that he heard?” She was still distracted.
“So what?” Harison frowned and stopped kissing her. “It doesn’t concern him.”
Evelina sighed and looked at Harison. “I don’t know, I just don’t like the thoughts I am having. What if he tries to use Layla?”
“Use her? For what?” Harison asked.
“I don’t know,” she shrugged. “He did say your dad beat down some values or something, what if he wants to use what she knows about your family to bring you guys down?”
Harison sighed and caressed her face. “Layla doesn’t know anything about us that could be damaging. Besides, I know Ryan, after his break up with Denise earlier this year, he hasn’t gotten into a relationship, and when asked about it in an interview, he said it was because he needed a respectable woman and hadn’t found one yet,” he said and walked to the window.
“Does that look respectable to you?” he said, pointing out his window at Layla walking under the rain.
Outside the house, Layla was still walking under the rain, starting to shiver from the cold, but she kept walking. She had to leave the villa’s large compound before getting a cab, she was already extremely wet, so rain didn’t bother her. The only thing that was bothering her was how to raise the money she needed for her grandfather’s health issue.
She was still under the rain when an SUV pulled up next to her and the door opened to her.
“Ms. Layla, right?” the man in the backseat inside asked and she nodded. “Hop in.”
Layla looked around; she was still in Harison’s family villa. She didn’t know who was in the car, but at this point, she wasn’t thinking straight, so she got into the car, soaked in water from head to toe.
Back in Harison’s room, Evelina was still looking at Layla when Ryan’s car pulled up.
“Oh my God! Babe, are you seeing this?” she quickly gestured for Harison to come back to the window. “Ryan just took her in his car.”
“What?” Harison exclaimed in surprise. He watched as the car drove off, unable to believe his eyes.
“I told you he was suspicious,” Evelina said.
“W-Well… that doesn’t m-mean h-he is t-trying anything,” Harison stammered. “He might just be giving her a lift,” he said, trying to convince himself that Evelina was wrong.

Ryan’s car pulled up at his home out in the outskirts of the city. Ryan took Layla by the hand to his house and handed her over to his housemaid.
“Please, prepare her a hot bath, she will fall sick if she goes to bed, then make that tea you made for me when I last caught a cold,” he ordered, and Layla was led to the bathroom and submerged in hot, soothing water, with only her head above the water.
After about an hour and thirty minutes, Layla left the bathroom. The maids had set a nice night gown for her on the bed. She picked up, it was a bit loose, but they weren’t made to be tight in the first place. She put them on and joined Ryan in the living room.
“Here, drink this,” he said and offered her a mug of hot brewed herbal tea.
“Thank you,” she received the cup and took a sip. It was bad at all.
“You really shouldn’t have done that to yourself, you could have died in that rainstorm,” Ryan said with an emotionless tone.
“I… sigh… I just had a lot on my mind and I wasn’t thinking straight,” she replied, feeling stupid.
“You dying to save your grandfather is rather foolish is it not?” Ryan finally turned to her.
“What?” Layla was shocked. “How did you know about that?”
“I overheard your conversation at Mr. Wade’s villa,” Ryan replied.
“I’m sorry… who are you?” she asked.
“Another mistake,” Ryan stood up and walked closer to the fireplace. “Why are all women this way?” he sighed. “You entered the car of someone you didn’t know, and now you are at the edge of the city, nowhere to run, no one to help you, what if I wanted to kill you?” he said and turned around with a calm look on his face.
Layla swallowed hard and shifted in her seat uncomfortably.
“You made two bad decisions in one night, very unbecoming of a respectable woman like yourself,” he sighed. “I am Ryan, Ryan Martinez,” he said and his phone rang, it was his grandmother. “You should rest, we will talk tomorrow,” he said as he took the call.
“Good evening, Nana,” he greeted as he took the call.
“Will you be coming home tonight?” she asked.
“No Nana, I am going to sleep at my private condo tonight,” he replied.
“Why?”
“I have a guest with me tonight, I do not want you to meet her just yet,” Ryan replied.
“What? Oh my,” his grandma was excited. “Who is she?”
“Layla is her name, Layla Reynolds.”
“What?” her mood suddenly changed. “Layla Reynolds? As in the Reynolds’s that just went bankrupt?”
“Precisely,” he replied, unperturbed.
“I do not accept this Nieto,” she complained. “I will not support it.”
“Nana, I have made up my mind. She is the one I want, and once I am done building this relationship, I will introduce her to the family,” Ryan replied. “Goodnight Nana,” he said and ended the call.
Layla went to bed feeling a bit uneasy. She didn’t know if she was safe, but he hadn’t done anything to her yet, she had never heard news about him being involved in such scandals. Although it was tough, she eventually slept. She woke up the following morning and went to the bathroom after confirming she wasn’t dead. She took a quick shower and left the bathroom to find her clothes, but yelped when she left her room only to see him in her bedroom. “OH MY GOD!” she screamed and ran back into the bathroom.“What are you doing?” Ryan asked, confused.“I should be the one asking that!” Layla shouted from the bathroom. “What?”“Yes!” she yelled. “What the hell are you doing in my room?”“Your room?” Ryan chuckled. “I think you might have forgotten something, this is my house, every room in this house is mine,” he said with a slightly demeaning tone.Layla wanted to find a rebuttal, but he was right, it was his house.“Would you leave the bathroom? I like to look people in the eyes when I
Layla sat on the bed, considering the ways out of the mess she and her family were in. She had options, but they were rather few.She took out her phone, not sure if she could handle all this on her own. She needed someone else’s view on it. She dialed a number and it rang.“Good morning, Luke,” she greeted, immediately she picked the call.“Layla calling me before seven in the morning is never a good sign. Layla greeting me first thing after I pick the call is an even worse sign. Layla doing both? There really must be fire on the mountain,” Luke joked. Layla chuckled as her mood lightened. Luke had been her friend since they were kids. His mom used to work for the family as a chef, and even after her death, they had both maintained communication with each other.“So… what’s bothering you? I can tell something’s up, what’s wrong?” Luke asked.Layla sighed and looked at the ceiling. “I don’t know where to start Luke,” she said with a shaky voice. “How about you start from the last ti
Layla took a deep breath after a successful blackmail. She felt her heart clench and slam harder and harder against her chest, protesting as she blackmailed Harrison. She found her way to the bar to try to calm her nerves.“Scotch, on the rocks,” she ordered and turned around to watch the unfolding party, trying to find something to distract her from the judgment of her heart.“He was sleeping with his stepmother for Christ’s sake. How am I the one restless about this?”“Maybe because I blackmailed him.”“Ugh… why am I so soft? I needed this. I wouldn’t have done this if I didn’t need the money for granddad’s surgery.”She battled in her head with her conscience. The bartender served her drink and she was about to take it when someone snatched it away from her.“A lady drinking this early at a birthday party?” the young man laughed. “Felix?” Layla squinted as she recognized him. He was like Luke, tall, dark and handsome. Only difference was that he was a multimillionaire owning thre
Ryan dropped his champagne glass on a tray and left the party hall, leaving Layla standing confused. He had neither denied nor accepted her allegations.“If he isn’t the one responsible and I chase after him, I will lose sight of Harison and Felix. Felix is right there, I could go and confirm then find Harison… But Ryan said my clock is ticking, so he knows about the buying of the hospital… he was the one that gave the order!” Layla realized and tossed her glass aside and ran after Ryan. She immediately left the hall and ran towards the parking lot. There were too many cars down there, she couldn’t risk going down to find him, so she stood in the middle of the road, waiting for his car.Ryan’s car came screeching out of the parking lot. His eyes were on his phone, but he luckily saw her on time and swerved to the right.Layla was grazed by the car and fell to the ground, wincing in pain.“What the hell is wrong with you?” Ryan yelled as he parked his car and got out. “Do you want to d
The ride to the restaurant was rather silent, the atmosphere was a bit awkward in the car.“You said we were going to talk about my grandfather,” Layla broke the silence.“Well, you can start, I will join you when I am ready,” Ryan replied coldly.“So, I beat you in one little argument and you start sulking?” Layla scoffed. “And you wanted me to be your woman.”“What was that supposed to mean?” Ryan frowned.“If you want me as your woman, you have to be my man, and this… this is not how my man would behave,” Layla said and folded her hands.“And how would your man behave? Get drunk? Find another girl and make her your replacement?” Ryan said with a demeaning tone, silencing Layla.Layla sighed as she remembered Harison.“I can’t believe he would do that to me though,” she thought to herself. “And his reason… it doesn’t make any sense. I loved him and I didn’t want him spending too much. And the part about me not spending on him? He told me he hated it when I spent on him before. He al
Ryan wrapped his arms around Layla as they walked past Felix and Denise and left the restaurant, he felt as happy as he looked, and Layla was surprised that he could be this merry.“I am starting to think I like you better when you are drunk,” she joled.“Everyone tells me that,” Ryan laughed as they got to the car. “Am I really that boring when I am sober?”“A little,” Layla nodded. “You are a tight-ass meany when you aren’t drunk, and you are too calculative. For instance, you wouldn’t have made Denise feel like a complete fool the way you did just now if you weren’t drunk.”“Hah,” Ryan laughed. “She did look like a fool, didn’t she? Well, it’s a shame no one got it on camera, I would have loved to see her face when I sober up,” he said, took out his keys and handed them to Layla. “You are driving me home.”“I don’t even know where that is,” Layla complained as she got him into the back of the car.“Th-There’s a GPS,” he pointed at the screen. “I know there is a GPS, I don’t know t
Layla wasn’t surprised by his outburst, she had known something like that would happen, but she was expecting he would have been enraged because she answered his call. In Her head, she was going to make him regret his decision to order everyone to not loan her money. He was supposed to beg for her forgiveness, then she would take her bag and leave, leaving him to regret his actions and hate himself. In the end, she took her bag and stormed out of the house, just as she had planned, but he was the one that asked to leave. As she left the house, she began to rethink what had just happened and slowly dropped her pace as it dawned on her that she might have made a mistake. She quickly called Luke and narrated what happened to him, asking him for his opinion.“He was right though,” Luke said hesitantly. “Your family had been taking loans from everyone to maintain their lifestyles, your sister, your brother, even your aunts. If they had continued, you would have been in much more debt than
Layla ordered a bottle of water. As much as she would have loved to order tequila or something as strong, she didn’t know who she was meeting tonight. She didn’t know if she was going to need to fight her way out of an attempt to sleep with her or if she was going to be meeting someone respectable. “If he is meeting me privately and will only text me the room location when he arrives then that means he has been blackmailed in situations like this because he was trying to help a lady, he is trying to prevent a scandal or something, or maybe he doesn’t want anyone else to know where I last went so he can kidnap me?” he thoughts churned.Layla was still thinking when someone came up to her.“I knew I smelt something foul,” the person said, it was a lady’s voice, and it was laced with hatred and disgust.Layla turned around, wondering what enemy of hers was at the club tonight. “Um… who are you?” she asked, a bit confused.“Are you seriously going to pretend you don’t know me?” the lady
