Chapter 4

Author: Noisy Whispers
After stepping out of the taxi, I walked into the airport.

I unlocked my phone and saw a message from Isabelle. She told me that Professor Harrington was willing to hold my previous position for me.

I let out a sigh of relief and immediately replied that I would report in tomorrow.

"I do."Thunderous applause filled the hall, yet Hugo felt an inexplicable emptiness inside. His gaze swept across the crowd, searching for a familiar figure, as if waiting for someone to jump out and tell him this was all a joke. But he found nothing

The sticky note slipped from Hugo's fingers. He immediately picked up his phone and called the bodyguard from earlier. The moment the call connected, he asked impatiently, "Regarding that letter you found, are you sure Katherine wrote it? Where did she go?"The bodyguard replied, "Mr. Laurent, it's real. I checked the surveillance footage—Ms. Blake left it at the entrance and then walked away."The letter said she was breaking up with you and returning overseas. That's why I asked if you wanted to go after her."But since your heart is now with Ms. Mendes, it doesn't really matter—""Shut up! What the hell do you know?" Hugo choked on his words, staring at me in disbelief. He didn't understand why I was treating him like this, but this was exactly how he had treated me before.I thought he would get the message and back off.Yet, to my surprise, he didn't leave. In fact, he clung to me even more persistently than when he first chased after me.I let out a sigh. "As expected. What you can't have is what you want the most. Once you have it, you stop treasuring it, don't you?"Hugo froze. "What?"When he finally processed what I meant, his expression darkened."Katherine, how could you think that? When have I ever not cherished you?"Haven't I been good enough to you? Tell me, what have I not given you? Where have I not taken you? Just because I stayed by Sophia's side for a few days, you have to blow it out of proportion like this?"I didn't answer his question.Instead, I shrugged, smiling faintly. "If that's what you think, then there's nothing I can do about it. How about this—I'll agree t

"The moment I leave, you're already with someone else? Were you cheating on me the whole time? Otherwise, how could you move so quickly?" "Katherine Blake, can't you just sign the surgery consent form yourself? Do you really need to call me so many times for this?"Just because Sophia got hurt, does that mean you had to go and break your own bones too? I'm exhausted enough as it is—stop adding to my troubles, will you?"Hugo Laurent's voice came through the phone, carrying an unmistakable hint of irritation and impatience.Since Sophia Mendes had caused a scene at our wedding, he had disappeared with her for half a day. This was my 20th call to him. The first 19 had all been declined without exception. His cold tone made me pause for a moment before I said softly, "Sophia pushed me."Dr. Beckett says a family member has to sign the consent form. You're already at the hospital—could you really not take just a few minutes to come and do it?"But all I got in response was the sharp sound of the call being cut off.I had expected as much, so I simply sighed. My hand was yanked violently, causing the IV needle to stab deeper into my skin, sending a sharp pain through me.But I didn't answer him right away. Instead, I asked, "Why do you want my ring?"That ring was something I had painstakingly designed myself. It had taken me months to handcraft it. It was a symbol of our lifelong commitment."Sophia likes it," Hugo said casually. "She wants us to have matching couple rings. You should just give it to her. It's just a worthless piece of junk anyway. There are barely any diamonds. It's not worth much."As he spoke, his gaze landed on the ring sitting at the corner of the table. Without hesitation, he picked it up and turned to leave.I tried to grab it back, nearly forgetting that my leg was still immobile. But I still clung to the ring with all my strength, refusing to let go.
