Daniel Stern was so much more than the stereotypical tall, dark and handsome. Every time he walked into a room, jaws would drop, women would be fighting to get his attention and even some of the men. His whole being was perfection, the perfect chiselled jaw, the dazzling blue eyes, the shortish messy brown hair. He was mesmerising and he knew it, being heir to a billion-pound legacy did that to a guy. As he sat at his huge mahogany desk in his soft, black leather chair, he couldn't help but let his mind travel back to the beautiful woman he once loved the joy she would bring him and the despair she has left him in. The way she would lay there asleep, so peaceful and so pure. As he let his mind wander through the past like he had done so many times before, he grew weaker and weaker the stabbing pain of heartbreak re-lived all over again and he recalled his last memories of her.
The knocking on his office door brought him back from his painful reverie. Katherine entered with a knowing smirk on her perfectly manicured face, as Daniel looked at her, he couldn't help but feel disgusted. Katherine was Daniel's secretary and the occasional booty call. She was bleach blonde, her facial features were perfect yet lacked any character, she had dull grey eyes, with make-up that was always perfect yet it was more than she needed. Katherine was a very, well-dressed women usually choosing a tight pencil dress to show off her paid for curves, Daniel had regretted employing her since the first time he saw her, but as he kept reminding himself she was great at the job and his father had chosen her so there was no chance of getting rid of her.
"Mr Stern, you have a Miss Charlotte O'Neill to see you, shall I let her in?"
Daniel stopped breathing, his heart began to thump so hard he thought it would rip right out of his chest, a bead of sweat began to form on his forehead, he had no idea what to do. "Sir?" Katherine felt a bit uneasy when he didn't reply, she rushed to his side and knelt by his feet, "Danny? Are you OK? You're starting to scare me!" And the sound of those words he remembered where he was, "of course I'm OK! Go let her in for god sake!" Daniel snapped. Katherine blushed at the tone of his voice and hurried away.
She can't have found out, could she? What am I supposed to
say to her? She's never going to forgive...
Suddenly there came a knock on the door pulling Daniel out of his thoughts, as Charlotte walked in, all he could do was sit there, everything just stopped, his breathing, his heart and for a moment he thought maybe even time. She was exactly how he left her, the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, the long brunette hair, the perfect cheekbones, her eyes like the bluest oceans, so vast and mesmerising, her slight hourglass figure, the sexy way her jeans hugged her hips and her cream blouse pulled in at her tiny waist. He was as much in love with her now as he was before. As she walked up to him, he raised his shaking hand to meet hers...
"Hello, it's nice to meet you, I'm Daniel Stern" Daniel said in his most confident voice, trying not to give away that she was doing so much to him just by being there. "Hi, I'm
"Charlotte O'Neil, I've come to see you about buying a house in the area and I've heard you’re the best at what you do,”
Charlotte said trying to hold back the butterflies fluttering in her stomach, he was the most handsome man she had ever seen.
After what seemed like hours, Daniel and Charlotte agreed on a house. He had only shown her a couple on the portfolio, but one stood out for them both, more so for him than her. It was Daniels own house, he hadn't been intending to sell it but as it was Charlotte sitting in front of him, he wanted, no needed for her to have it as he had always intended all these years. He knew he should tell her that they had shared countless memories in that big country house but he didn't have the heart and trying to fight the guilt threatening to eat him alive was something he didn't want to handle.
She doesn’t have to find out just yet, does she? She looks so
happy and I'm not spoiling that!
Daniel thought to himself trying to push away the horrible feelings growing inside him. Once he knew Charlotte was safely out of the building and with an appointment set, he ventured home plugging in his headphones to drown out the voices in his head. He had to clear the house, something he's tried to do for years but, had never been able to.
Charlotte would never forgive you if you don't!
The voice of reason shouted as he pulled up the driveway. He knew the voice was right so, he headed inside silently starting to remove all evidence of the memories he cherished and had now tarnished. Charlotte had arrived a couple of minutes early to her appointment with Mr Stern to view the big country house that stood towering over her. As she looked around through the window of her car on the big open spaces, she loved it.
A few minutes later Daniel arrived looking as magnificent as the last time she saw him. The butterflies in her stomach were on overdrive and she hoped she wouldn't make a scene trying to get out of her car and better yet remember how to speak. Thankfully, lady luck was on her side today, she climbed out of the car gracefully and manage to get over to Daniel without a hiccup.
Thank God for that!
Charlotte thought, smiling at her small achievement.
"Hello, Miss O'Neill, how are you today?"
Daniel said almost in a hurry. "I'm good, thank you, I'm already rather impressed with the outside, let's hope the inside is as great too!" Charlotte said, ignoring Daniel's blatant coolness and as much confidence as she could muster.
As Charlotte walked around this vast house, she could feel herself becoming more and more upset, not understanding why, neither could she shake the feeling that she knew this building, the familiarity of it, but the atmosphere felt different and Charlotte couldn't quite put her finger on it, However, the house must be the most beautiful and characteristic building she had ever seen, the hallway with its marbled floors, a centrepiece of freshly cut flowers, Lily's and roses, smaller bouquets placed on a solid oak, handcrafted side table inlaid with such an exquisite array of Japanese artwork and oil paintings hung on the walls of the most wonderful landscapes, as she walked into the lounge she was in awe, the cream sofas with black scatter cushions and one single red one, a grand piano situated in the corner by a lovely, big bay window, with a view that was breath taking, the dainty little ornaments of animals and goddess like women, and in the centre of it all a warm, cosy fire place with a fluffy rug in front of it. Every room was inspiring and although the feeling of upset and uneasiness kept on trying to creep its way in, ignoring the feeling, Charlotte found herself shaking hands with this beautiful man.
"I want this house, where do I sign?"
Daniel had dreaded this appointment all week. As he drovethrough the small town and up through the country roadsto the house, he mentally went over every room. He'd spentall week taking away any trace of the two together in thehouse but he felt like he was forgetting something. As hedrove up to the front door, he found Charlotte waiting therefor him, she looked beautiful and his heart leapt. As muchas he wanted to spend every moment he had withCharlotte, he wanted this over and done with. What if she doesn't want it? What if something brings backher memories?Daniel's thoughts kept circling in his head, but pushing themaside he figured he would just show her around, keep hisfingers crossed and hurry it up. It seemed to have workedbecause Charlotte wanted to buy it. A few times thereDaniels had thought she'd remembered but she seemed tokeep going a big smile radiating across her face.D
As Charlotte opened the door on her new home, she feltthat familiarity again, ignoring it she ushered the removalmen in, directing them with the boxes and furniture she hadno idea where she would be putting it. Hours went by untilshe was finally able to have a good look around, with a cupof tea in hand, that ever-present familiarity and sadnesscreeping in. As she looked around her, she started to notice little things, nothing major but, things like the small holes inthe walls were paintings and pictures used to be or thescent of a fragrance that was lingering in the housesomething she knew but couldn't quite put her finger onwhat it was.As she wandered further around the house, she felt a lotmore comfortable and excited that she had somewhere tocall her own. The sense of belonging somewhere, something she hadn't felt since awakening from the coma that she'dbeen in for a few years according to the do
Her long, silky soft hair lay spread out around herhead like a halo, her slim yet curvaceous figure liecrumpled on the floor, broken and bruised. Danielran to her but when he thought he was closeenough to touch her, a dark figure came out ofnowhere, taunting him with his haunting, darkvoice, the words written on the note. As much as Daniel tried to touch Charlotte the further away, she became, he struggled and scrambled throughthe darkness trying to reach her, screaming hername.BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!Daniel sprung up to the sound of his alarm, sweatbeading all over him, tears running down his faceand his heart beating uncontrollably. It took a fewminutes for him to restore the calm and realisewhere he was and that he had just had a nightmarenothing more. Taking a deep breath and crawlingout of bed he headed for a cold shower hoping thatit will shake the memories of his sleep. Hea
With a splintering pain flowing up his back and a pain in hisneck Daniel woke from a restless sleep. He'd fallen asleepat his desk after everything that had occurred the nightbefore he was exhausted. Walking into the closet he had inhis office, he picked out a navy Armani suit and got dressedquickly. Daniel had almost forgotten about the delivery he had last night; he had no idea what he was going to do.Looking around his office at all the paperwork and deskequipment littering his floor he quickly spotted his phone, bending down to pick it up he grimaced with the flashbackof Katherine bent over the desk and his complete lack ofwillpower to stop anything. Daniel had to get some help onthe situation and quick, Charlotte’s life was in danger andhe needed to stop whoever it was doing this before shefound out. Bringing up his contact list on his phone he calledhis one and only trustworthy employee/f
The next day, Daniel awoke with a jolt. His head poundedworse than he'd ever experienced before and his stomachwas churning. Darting out of bed Daniel shot into the hugeensuite, bent over the toilet and released everything he hadconsumed from the day before. Collapsing up against thecool marble wall Daniel caught his breath. “What the hellhappened last night?!” Daniel asked himself. After watching Charlotte with Stefano all afternoon as theyate, drank and flirted, Daniel had consumed a whole bottleof bourbon and half a bottle of Jack Daniels before headingoff into the city to drink the V.I.P section of Club Tiger dry.All he could remember was that spark he saw in Charlottewhen she was speaking to HIM, the two of them sat thereand Stefano worming his way into her life.Daniel hated Stefano. Driving down the driveway into the town, Charlotte wasshaking. She felt giddy and elated that Daniel had said yesafter she blurted out the offer of meeting for coffee.Charlotte was sure her face went bright red, it felt like shewas on fire when she realised what she said. Daniel lookedincredible in that suit, fitted and looking drop deadgorgeous. She knew later he’d be filling her dreams withthat incredible face and smooth voice. With a massive smile on her face like a Cheshire cat, sheparked up to go meet Stefano, another guy who hadentered her dreams. Walking across the carpark someonecame past her from behind and bumped into he beforespeeding off; they had the hood up on their black hoodie soshe couldn’t see their face, they had skinny jeans thathugged their legs and trainers on. Charlotte naturallyapologised as they bumped into her and thought no moreof it.Stefano was sat in th
Daniel drove back to the office, his music on blaring andsinging along. The pure childish excitement he had over his coffee meet with Charlotte had taken over. Parking in hisspace, he took the lift to the top floor of his building andwas greeted by a smirk plastered on Katherines face as shestood up from behind her desk, “Mr Stern, you have aparcel on your desk, the delivery boy dropped it offearlier.” She said with a look as though she was thinkingI’d bought her something. Although he bought her lingerie, and fancy jewellery now and again, he hadn’t ordered orbeen expecting anything to be delivered today. With aquizzical look, Daniel walked into his office straight towhere the delivery was. He read the label; there was noreturn address or any information as to where it had comefrom. Slowly Daniel opened the box. Inside was a whiteenvelope with “OPEN ME” scrawled on
Charlotte drove the high-street heading home, confusedby the poem that been put in her pocket, she called Lucy.“Hey! You ok?” Lucy practically sang. “Hey beautiful, justthought I’d call, I had a note left again but this time it wasin my pocket and it was a poem.” Charlotte said, reachingout for the poem to read it to Lucy. “what do you mean itwas in your pocket? How did it get there? What did it say?” Lucy asked. Charlotte read off the poem and recalledthe person that bumped into her in the carpark before shewent for coffee. “someone bumped into me in the carparkearlier when I went to meet Stefano for coffee, they musthave dropped the note in my pocket then,” Charlottelooked down to put the note into her handbag.BANG! Laying down on the wooden lounger upon a 38ft yacht, charlotte was in a stated of near euphoria. Everything at that moment in time was perfect. Stefano had hired a boat trip for them both to go exploring the Lake Como, they’d seen beautiful coves, beautiful villages on the coast and beautiful shoals of fish swimming beneath them. She was now soaking up the sun and topping up her tan in a small white bikini that had small shells decorating the strings. “This is beautiful Stefano, you have really made some impression,” Charlotte smiled and glanced sideways beneath her large black sunglasses. “Oh really? Well you haven’t seen what I have instore for tonight yet,” Stefano winked at her and chuckled. “Ooo more surprises!” Charlotte felt like a kid on her birthday. For the past week and a half that she’d been in Italy with Stefano she had felt like it was years of Christmas and birthdays all rolled into one. She couldn’t think of anything else he could possibly surprise her with. “So w
“He’s taken her to Italy.” Ethan said over the phone, Daniel didn’t want to believe it. The dream he still couldn’t seem to shake was now becoming a reality. “He’s what?.” Daniel said hoping Ethan was going to reply with something different. “I’m sorry Dan, I tried to tell him when he turned up at Charlottes but she jumped in between us both before I could swing for him.” Ethan’s voice portrayed the disappointment of not being able to connect his fist with Stefano’s well chiselled face. “Can we keep an eye on her out there? I don’t want that bastard to do anything,” Daniel said sliding back into business mode. “I’ll look into it, I’m sure she’ll be fine, his family are there and from what I remember they wouldn’t stand for anything funny going on.” Ethan replied. Daniel hung up the phone, his brain couldn’t compute as to why his life was falling down around him. Opening his office door, he called Katherine into his office. The smirk on Katherines face showed she knew what was about to
8:45pm, there was a knock on Charlottes front door. She ran down the stairs as fast as she could, stopping just before the door to fix her appearance in the mirror she had in the hallway. Opening the door, Stefano stood there looking like some sort of Greek god. Charlottes words seemed to have got lost as she just stared at the man before her. “you ready mio amore?” Stefano said trying not to chuckle at how starstruck Charlotte was. “oh, erm, yes I think so,” Charlotte stammered as she did the 5th check of her handbag. “Passport, Phone, Purse.. yep I’m all good to go.” Charlotte was beyond excited as Stefano took the suitcase from her hands, leaving an aftershock shooting round body. Following the god of a man out of the house, locking the door behind her and headed for the car. When they arrived at the Heathrow airport, Charlotte got out of the car and retrieved her luggage from the boot of the car. “I feel like a kid at Christmas” she giggled at Stefano. They bothlooked at each other the other guy Ethan, almost glaredJosh to death. “Daniel Stern?” Josh said sounding like hewas trying to work out what Charlotte had heard. “Whydoesn’t he want me to remember?” Charlotte said asimages of the glass jar an
Daniel watched Ethan leave the room and collapsed on thefloor. The memory of Stefano at the hospital watchingCharlotte, declaring his undying love for her played onrepeat in front of his eyes. Daniel sat there crying until hecouldn’t anymore. Dragging himself to his feet he thoughtit best to take Ethan’s advice. He walked into the ensuiteof his office, undressed and got into the shower. The watercascading down his back, he just stood there hoping thewater would wash away the pain and betrayal he felt.Stepping out of the shower, he caught a glimpse of himselfin the floor length mirror. Daniel near grimaced at how hisappearance had changed. His face was looking exhaustedand gaunt, His physique had taken a beating with all thestress and worry. Stepping on his scales, he grimaced evenmore. He’d dropped nearly a stone in the past few weeks.Daniel knew he needed to sort things out, he hadn’t eaten&nb
