CHAPTER ELEVEN

SOPHIE

“Are you ready, ma’am?” The driver asked me to which I responded with a nod, then I got inside the car. The drive was quiet and I could feel the driver’s eyes on me through the rear view mirror but I didn’t care.

My mind was occupied with thoughts of her. Would she want to see me? Or would she treat me like an absolute stranger? The thought of her ignoring me made me feel sick to my stomach.

“We’re here, ma’am,” The driver’s voice broke my line of thoughts.

“Oh,” I looked around, and indeed, we were at the pack. It was obvious that he was confused about why I would ask him to take me to the park, but unfortunately for him, he couldn’t ask.

“Wait for me here, I won’t be long,” I said, getting out of the car.

I took a deep breath, inhaling the fresh air, hoping it’d calm me but my mind was a mess. I pushed all the negative thoughts aside and focused on the task at hand.

I walked further into the park, occasionally glancing back to be sure that Dominic’s driver was

CHAPTER TWELVE SOPHIE“You went to the park?” Dominic asked me over dinner, making me pause, gripping my fork tightly. He wasn’t asking a question. He wanted me to tell him what I went to do, that I knew.“So?” I tried to sound casual as I stuffed my face with the medium rare steak. “So what did you do there?” He asked, and a part of me told me that he could easily find out why but he chose to hear it from me instead.I sat straight, squaring my shoulders, “Can’t a girl go out to enjoy some fresh air?” I stared at him ridiculously, “I didn’t realize that this marriage and being in jail is basically the same thing, Hayes.”A muscle in his jaw ticked but he continued calmly, “You should be grateful that I let you go out.”I stared at him like he said something stupid, because in truth, he had, “You must be joking. You can’t do that!”“Try me,” he arched his brow, showing me that he could do whatever he wanted.“You’re—“ My words were cut short by the sharp ringing of his cellphone. H

CHAPTER THIRTEENDOMINICI couldn’t say I hadn’t known. Jesus, it was why I'd always tried to keep my distance from her. I'd known she would trip me up. Though, as much as I wished I could blame my fuckup on the fact trouble followed Sophie wherever she went, I knew that had nothing to do with it. When she was close, all I could focus on was that she smelled like temptation. Like something I wanted to worship and degrade at the same time. She'd just had to prod that one spot, that one weakness of mine to make me lose my grasp on control. She'd been right about my mother. I could only imagine the look on her pretty face if she knew I'd been the one to put the bitch out of her fucking misery.I hadn't given myself up in over seven years. Seven years down the drain because of one goddamn woman. I might as well have built an empire from scratch at that time. The next time she spoke back to me, I just needed to shut her up in a way she wasn’t going to forget. The image of her, on her kne

CHAPTER FOURTEENSOPHIE“Since you gave her full custody of your child, then it’ll be difficult to get her back, except she lets her go willingly.” Said the attorney, making me slump in my seat. After Dominic had left for work this morning, I made the driver take me to the attorney’s office. I didn’t bother lying, I just made a mental note to tell Dominic that I wanted to start the full process of Ethan’s and my divorce. But that wasn’t the case, at least not yet. My main goal was to get my daughter back. The attorney must have noticed how I look, so he added, “If we play it right, we can get your daughter back.”“Thank you, Mr Maxwell.” I said, standing up, “I’ll be back, and please…” I looked straight at him, “Please, this is our little secret. At least until I have full custody of her, my ex husband can’t know.”If Ethan was to find out about this, then everything would be absolutely ruined and I’ll lose to him a second time.“I understand,” he said, already on his feet, then he sh

CHAPTER FIFTEENDOMINICI watched Sophie play around with her dinner, her mind obviously elsewhere. The fact that something else had her attention other than me infuriated the hell out of me. She had barely touched her food, barely even spared me a glance. Whatever it was that had her deep in thought, was already an enemy of mine.“You thinking of ending the marriage, already?” I asked, putting a neatly cut steak in my mouth.“Huh?” She finally stared up at me, looking confused. “What do you mean?”I gently dropped my fork and leaned back against the chair, carefully studying her, “You’ve barely said a word since you sat down and you haven’t eaten anything. Is the food not to your liking?” If she didn’t like the food, then I’d have to painstakingly let go of the chef. Even to me, it was weird showing so much attention to someone other than myself. But this was what Sophie had turned me into. I knew more than what was acceptable about her. I knew her even more than the back of my hand

CHAPTER SIXTEEN SOPHIE“I’ll call child protection services on you!” I snarled, my chest heaving with rage, my fists balled so tightly that my nails bit into my palms.Judy only laughed, the cruel sound grated on my nerves.“I’d like to see you try, Sophie,” she sneered, stepping closer until I could smell the sour alcohol on her breath.“But once you do that…” Her eyes gleamed with malice. “Ethan will know about his daughter. And you’ll lose everything you’ve worked so hard for.”My stomach twisted violently.Behind her, Mira sat small and crumpled on the bench, her head bowed low, as if she could shrink into nothingness.“Please,” I choked out, my voice cracking. “Don’t do this. I’m begging you.”I should have known better.Judy smelled my desperation like a vampire smelling blood and she attacked.“Give me more money!” she spat, and lunged for my bag.I fought back instinctively, clutching it to my chest. But Francis, her bloated, vicious husband grabbed my arm and twisted. I gasp

PROLOGUEDOMINIC“I can be obsessive about my interests.” That was my reply to the therapist’s question about myself. She lifted her eyes from the notepad, intrigued but careful. “Obsessive?”I nodded.“Alcohol?”I slowly shook my head with a small smirk on my lips.“Drugs?”It would’ve been easier if it were drugs. At least addiction to substances could be cured.“Women?”Woman, I corrected in my head.I didn’t answer. I didn’t need to. The smirk on my lips told her everything she needed to know. Her eyes flickered to my mouth before she caught herself and swallowed hard. Interesting. She was trying too hard to maintain her composure.I was used to that and that’s why she intrigued me. She blatantly rejected my advances, when I could have given her everything she wanted and more.“Do you often give in to whatever it is that you want?” she asked and turned back to her notepad, ready to write. Not really. Wanting something and having it were two different things. There was no fun in ea

CHAPTER ONESOPHIEI caught my husband cheating on me and he sent me to jail for it!Ethan and I had been married for five and we were head over heels in love with each other. “Don’t stay up waiting for me, I’ll be working late.” He said before he left for work that morning. He left so early that he didn’t have breakfast that I prepared for him. He had been leaving early and missing breakfasts so, I decided to surprise him with lunch. But when I got to his office, I was the one who was surprised.“Oh my god, Ethan faster!” A woman’s loud and unhinged moans echoed in my head.Ethan had his pants down and he was humping his secretary, Stella, like a dog in heat. And Stella, had her skirt around her waist and she was on his desk, in his office!“W..what is going on here?!” My voice was shaky as I tried to process everything that was happening right in front of my eyes even as my heart was racing rapidly and my vision was getting blurry due to the tears that had gathered in my eyes.“Soph

CHAPTER TWOSOPHIEThere was blood everywhere, on my hands, my face, and even on my clothes. I touched my arms, and my stomach but there was no pain, no wound on my body. Then whose blood is this?It was warm and sticky, and it sent shivers down my spine. My throat felt tight and breathing became difficult as I looked down at Ethan, and realized that the knife was buried deep in his chest. His white shirt was turning red, and the blood was quickly spreading out.I blinked rapidly. No. No, no, no. This isn’t happening.Ethan coughed, and he managed to smirk despite the pain. My heart pounded in my chest. I wanted to help him, and press my hands over the wound to stop the bleeding, but my body wouldn’t move. I was in so much shock. Then suddenly, a loud scream filled the air.“Help!” Stella screamed and her voice was filled with fear and terror. “Someone help! Mr. Ethan’s wife is trying to murder him!”I quickly turned toward her and saw that she was at the office door, banging her fist

CHAPTER TENSOPHIEI groan as I stretched my body, shielding my eyes from the bright light coming through the window. I didn’t even realize when I fell asleep. Contrary to what I wanted, I was perched by the window the whole night, waiting for my so called husband to return, but he didn’t. What was I even expecting?I sluggishly got out of bed and freshened up, then I headed downstairs, ready to devour whatever the chef had prepared for breakfast. But on the last step, I looked up to see Dominic sitting at the head of the long dining table, a cup of coffee in his hand and his phone lying facedown on the table. “What are you doing here?” I asked before I could stop myself, storming into the dining room to meet him.But Dominic didn’t answer. He just stopped eating and gave me an obvious look that said, “The last time I checked, this is my house.”I cleared my throat awkwardly and gently took a seat on the other end of the table, “Good morning,” I muttered as a maid served me breakfas

CHAPTER NINESOPHIEThe door slammed behind him, the loud sound echoing through the room. I stood there, frozen, my chest heaving, and the taste of him still burning on my lips.God.What the hell just happened?I lifted my fingers to my mouth as if I could wipe it away, but the memory was already buried deep in my skin, the roughness, the desperation, and the way he kissed me like he hated me for existing and hated himself even more for wanting me.Anger boiled in my veins. How dare he?How dare he touch me like that, like I belonged to him, when all I wanted was to be free? I didn’t ask for this. I didn’t ask for him. I didn’t ask for any of it.I bit down on the inside of my cheek until I tasted blood, fighting to stay calm as emotions rose in my chest. It didn’t matter. It couldn’t matter.Dominic Hayes was just another cage. A colder, smarter, more dangerous one than Ethan ever was. I wouldn’t let myself fall into another trap. Not again.I was Mrs. Hayes now only by name, not b

CHAPTER EIGHTDOMINIC“Who hurt you?” I asked, my voice coming out lower than I meant it to.She flinched like I was going to hit her. I wasn’t sure if that made me sick… or smug.“Let go of me,” she snapped, but her voice wasn’t as strong as she wanted it to be. She was flustered. Good. She should be. I didn’t pull her out of hell just to watch her play victim again.“It’s none of your business.”“It’s all my business,” I growled and took a step closer. Her scent was in my head now. It was wild and sweet, still the same as I remembered.God, I needed therapy. Too late. I had therapy, but I had my doubts if it was working. She tried to shove past me and I grabbed her arms. I didn’t mean to. Not really, but I needed her to stop and make her look at me. I needed to know if she was lying. If she was hurt or I had to burn someone alive.“Who hurt you, Sophie?” I asked again, quieter this time. She blinked up at me, guarding her emotions and showing me the fire in her eyes. It was my favor
