Chapter Four

Tonight Anthony was dressed in a white polo shirt and a pair of black khakis to match. His hair was tied back into a low bun and his eyes zoomed in on Abby as she approached him.

“You look good,” she complimented, offering a smile. He mirrored her smile and pulled her in for a hug that surprised her.

“You just got out of the shower didn't you,” he said, stifling a laugh as he breathed in her scent.

“What're you doing here?” She asked. “You didn't tell me you were coming over and besides it's going to start raining any moment.”

“I thought I'd take you to a surprise dinner,” he replied, his expression serious but his gaze seductive.

Abby glanced back at the house, hiding a blush. “I can't go out dressed like this. Maybe you could give me a few minutes to change?”

“Dinner's at my place. We could leave now,” he suggested, holding open the door for her.

Her cheeks quickly tainted red.

Meanwhile, Sarah walked out onto the porch dressed in a loose Tee and a pair of shorts. Her expression was disapproving. Abby had always been stubborn, jumping at whoever showed her the least attention.

“Hi Sarah,” Anthony called out, giving a little wave that Sarah didn't bother returning. “She still hates me doesn't she?”

Abby scoffed. “Of course she does. You weren't exactly the nicest guy back in highschool.”

Anthony stifled a laugh and moved aside to let Abby in.

Dressed in just a simple old Tee and butt shorts, Abby sat waiting for him to get in. Her heart was racing, not because she was excited but because it was all happening a little too fast.

One minute she was mad at him and the next minute she was on the way to his house for a surprise dinner.

Anthony's house was a beautiful condo in a much more secluded spot in town. Every once in a while they'd drive past a house.

“Welcome to my humble abode,” he said as they walked in. Nothing about his place seemed humble— from the furnitures to the interior design. It was simply exquisite.

“What'd you do for a living?” She found herself asking.

“I'm an architect. Ever heard of wells and co?” Abby shook her head, surprising Anthony. “You should look it up. It's a little tricky explaining what we do.”

While he disappeared into his room to change, Abby moved around, taking in the beautiful room.

He returned several moments later, dressed in a simple tank top and a pair of dark grey sweatpants. He was breathtaking.

“You're staring,” he said, a faint smirk dancing against his lips. Abby looked away and walked towards the kitchen where dinner had already been set up.

“This is beautiful,” she gushed.

“I'm glad you like it.”

Throughout dinner, they talked over little topics with Anthony revealing only a little about himself but Abby wasn't payingal attention. She was already carried away by everything.

An hour later and they were cuddled on the couch, watching TV. This had to be the best surprise dinner Abby had ever had.

Now she was partly laid out on Anthony's body, halfway. He traced his fingers over her skin, where her shirt had ridden up. She relished the feeling, shutting her eyes whilst bitinf back a moan.

“Let me know when you want to stop,” he whispered. Abby didn't want him to stop, heck, she wanted more.

Within minutes of Anthony skimming his fingers across the right spots, Abby was done playing games. She sat up, straddling him and before she could rethink her decision, she sealed her lips to his.

Anthony quickly responded, devouring her lips, a low groan in his throat. Warmth spread between them.

It had been so long— a decade since they'd kissed and now, it felt even better than either of them could've possibly imagined. Every worry, every trace of anger fizzled off into nothing.

Anthony skillfully moved his lips from her lower lip to her neck, just where she liked. Abby's head titled back as a moan slid through her parted lips.

Her hips moved on their own, rocking against his lower half until she could feel something pressing against her core.

She moved faster and suddenly, the air no longer felt cold. Hunger mixed with lust gleamed in both their eyes.

Anthony fiddled with her shirt, tugging it over her head once he'd felt she was comfortable and began to lick her skin.

She was soft, just the way he liked it.

Creating some space between them, Abby worked her hands on his pants, tugging them off. His bulge pushed through his pants and that was when she realized he had no briefs on.

She felt wet instantly at the sight. He was huge, not painfully huge but just big enough. Mike was nothing close to this.

“Fuck,” he groaned the moment she took all of him in. He was starting to see stars. Abby felt different than Lisa, but in the best way.

She rode him slowly, painfully until he couldn't take it anymore and suddenly, he had flipped her over, ready to take her in from the back when the front door swung open and Lisa appeared, soaked from head to toe.

Before Abby had even sighted Lisa, Anthony — on instinct— had pushed her away. She slammed her side into his coffee table, which thankfully was rounded and not squared.

“What the fuck are you doing!?” Lisa yelled, her eyes heavy with tears. She stared between Anthony and Abby in disbelief.

“This is who you cancelled plans for?!” She continued. “Anthony you left me just because of an argument, so you could sleep with this whore?”

Abby wanted to state otherwise but she let Lisa yell. Even she hadn't expected this. Surely Anthony wouldn't have made a move on her if he was with someone else… right?

A tear rolled down Lisa's face. “It was our anniversary and you ruined it,” she sobbed and that was when it all came crashing down on Abby.

All the dots connected immediately. The surprise dinner wasn't for her but for Lisa.

Abby wasn't sure what hurt the most— the way Anthony had pushed her off him like they both didn't want it, the fact that he had ignored all her questions or that Sarah was right about him. “She still hasn't said anything all day, it's almost like she's gone mute.” Her mother had said one day. Five days, that was how long it'd been since the embarrassing incident back at Anthony's place. He still hadn't attempted to reach out or at least render an apology. “Are you okay?” Abby's mother, Mindy, asked, as she hurried into the kitchen. “I need someone to help me get a couple of things from the grocery store.” Abby rolled her eyes. She clearly wasn't in the mood to run errands but she also wasn't going to turn down the offer for some fresh air. “I promised the church I'd bring some of my home baked cookies tomorrow for the picnic we're having,” Mindy said, securing an apron around her waist. Abby frowned. “Since when did you start to go to church?” “Wver since that new pastor show

Everything was falling apart— the business his parents had struggled to build, his relationship with Lisa was already in flames and Abby still didn't want to talk to him. Anthony felt like he was falling and there was no safety net anywhere below him to break his fall.“Aimee, can you at least try to convince him that we can handle the project? We really can, we just need him to believe us.”Aimee, his assistant secretary, sighed into the other end of the phone. “Sir, we've done that already but every attempt to convince them has remained futile.”He blew out a breath of air and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Alright, send the company's contacts to my personal email, I'll talk to him myself,” he replied and hung up. Anthony reclined into his chair, exhausted and worn to a frazzle. How had he ended up here? Wells &Co. used to be one of the best design companies with the best architects but now, not only had they lost their best workers, they were struggling to keep their major cli

He watched as Abby hurried moved around, throwing all her clothes on.She shot him a glare and yelled. “I'll be outside in a minute Sarah.”Throwing on the easiest thing she could find— a button up shirt— she hurried to the door, smoothened her hair down and cracked the door open just a little bit.Sarah glanced down at her outfit and frowned when her eyes rose to see Abby's messy hair. “Are you okay? You look like you got into a nasty fight,” she said, pointing out the red markings on her sister's neck.Abby slapped Sarah's hands off her and tugged her collar up. “It's nothing, I was busy cleaning up my room.”The look on Sarah's face showed she wasn't buying the lies. Soon Mindy was at the door too, wondering why Abby was hiding behind the door. “Girl, would you open the door already?” Mindy asked and pushed the door open. • Twice the Charm   Chapter Eight

CHAPTER EIGHTIt was all over the news by the following afternoon. ‘Local businessman found dead in his home office with a gunshot wound to head and another to the chest. Detectives suspect a business deal gone wrong or an armed robbery’Anthony couldn't think. Ever since he'd turned on the TV, his heart rate hadn't dropped. Every news channel across Malibu was carrying the news story. He poured himself another shot of the sharp alcohol and chugged it down, still it wasn't working. What if the cops somehow linked it back to him? But it couldn't possibly happen, after all Chris had pulled the trigger, not him.Even with that logic, he was still scared, worried too. His phone rang and he jumped in fright. Shit, he was losing it. Exhaling shakily, he reached for his phone and seeing that it was his mother, he answered.“Honey, how are you?” His mother, Tina, asked. “Are you okay?”He nodded, swallowing a thick ball of saliva in his throat. “Yeah, I'm fine. Chapter Nine“Can you at least relax and tell me what happened?” Chris asked. He had known Anthony for a while and Anthony had always been a calm and collected man even under the face of pressure but right now that man was long gone.Anthony chugged down the glass of water to wet his parched throat. “I was at the bar and I heard these two men, they walked up to the bar to get a drink, and one of them was talking about how he had a buddy who was working with detectives on the Riversons case…” Anthony exhaled loudly, “Riverson had cameras installed in his house.”Everything slowed down. Chris’s mind began to reel quickly. Had the cops already gotten their hands on the footage? Were the cameras even working? There was no way they wouldn't find him now. Shit, he'd even walked in without a mask. “We've gotta get rid of the evidence,” Chris finally said, running his fingers through his wind blown hair. “We can't let them get to it before we do.”“So what do we do?” Both men thought long

For the third time that morning, Abby emptied her stomach into the toilet bowl. Exhausted and drained, she collapsed back onto the cool tiled floor, as she evened her breathing. Once she had flushed, brushed her teeth and splashed some water on her face, she strolled back into the hotel room. For the past two days the room had been painfully silent and everytime the sun disappeared behind the night sky, she felt herself missing him.Every attempt to reach out, as usual, had been futile. Anthony never returned any of her calls or texts. Soon anger simmered quickly in her chest. She dialed his number again and to her surprise, the call connected this time. “Anthony…” her voice nearly crackled. She calmed her nerves, maintaining the strength in her voice. “Where are you? I've been calling you for two days!”“I'm at a motel. Is there a problem?” Her brows quickly drew into a frown. “What'd you mean is there a problem?” She couldn't believe her ears. “Where are you? We need to talk.”

Shit. Shit. Shit.Chris could hear his heart hammering in his ears as he sat still, his hands cuffed together. Detective Klein stood across the room, quietly speaking into his walkie, relaxed and unaware of the storm building up inside Chris.Rhodes had stepped out for a bathroom break. That left Chris alone with the detective—and one shot.Klein looked like he could hold his own. Broad shoulders, lean build, dressed in a tailored suit that hinted at a gym habit. But even the strongest man could be taken down if he didn’t see it coming.Chris’s gaze dropped to the pen on the table. It wasn’t a weapon. Not really. But it was the only thing he could use.Chris shifted in his seat carefully, his muscles tense as he gingerly rose to his feet, without managing to to scrape the floor with his chair. Slowly, he reached for the pen and neared Detective Klein. In one swift move, he'd lunged at him and with a force he didn't know he had, slammed Klein's head into the wall. The sound was sicke

“I already told you I didn't do it Abby.”Abby wanted to believe him. Heck, she wanted to trust him this time but something about his changed demeanour was holding her back.“So why not answer my question Anthony?” She exhaled slowly. “Where were you before you flew down to New York?”Anthony rose to his feet. “I already told you I was in Massachusetts.”“It’s cold in here Anthony, why does it look like you're sweating?” She asked, watching him as he paced around the room. Panic flashed in his eyes as he looked down at his shirt where there were infact, small patches of sweat stains.“If you're here to carry out some stupid investigation, then let me know and I'll leave the room for you,” he retorted, his tone a little too high for comfort. She remained silent for sometime and finally spoke up. “You're the one who killed that man, aren't you?”Something flared in Anthony's eyes. This time it wasn't fear, it was disgust. There was no proof that he'd killed the man on the roof. Not a s

Maybe he bought something odd or…?”Sarah shook her head, slightly embarrassed. “No, we don't live together but I just have a feeling he has something to do with this,” she replied.Banes shot her a weary look and got out a notepad. “What's his full name?”“Anthony Wells.”He frowned. “The Anthony Wells of Wells and co?” He almost laughed. “Anthony would never.”Sarah frowned. “I'm not joking. Sarah had been following up on the murder case for quite a while and she thought it was odd that Anthony Wells had disappeared— vanished into thin air. Not only that, Abby had gone mute ever since. It was like she didn't want to engage in conversations regarding the case— like she didn't want to spill something.“I still don't get it. It just came up yesterday and I have to be at work by tomorrow afternoon.”Lies. Sarah could smell them.“You said you had one month off, so why the sudden disruption?”Abby clasped her hands together. She was starting to grow irritated. “I've already explained everything to you Sarah. Anthony's chest rose and fell as he locked eyes with the lifeless man. Shit, shit, shit! No, he hadn't planned on attacking the man— killing him even but there was no way he'd left 1 man talk to the cops. No, that wasn't an option either. He checked his clothes, his fingers and his shoes. There were no blood stains. Panic filled, he dragged the body behind an abandoned stack of air conditioning vents that'd been left to nothing. Once he was sure the body was well hidden, he briskly hurried down the stairs, slowing down as he neared the event hall. The music drowned the thudding in his chest. “Anthony!” His mother called from a group of guests that'd circled around her. “I've been looking all over the place for you.”“I had to find the men's room,” he replied, easing his tensed nerves and stuffing both hands into his pocket. “I actually thought I'd head home.
