I don’t know why I was so happy about it that I can’t seem to stop smiling.

“Was winning that important to you?” Elias asked as he sat in front of my desk in my office.

“Winning against her is,” I said, still smiling.

“There’s something about you and her,” Elias said but this time he was serious.

“What do you mean?” I asked pretending all innocent even though there wasn’t anything innocent about it.

I knew from the moment that I accepted her challenge that there was no turning back. Especially after I heard the story about how she had lost someone just like me. Even though we were both sparring and fighting to win a challenge, I feel like we connected more.

It’s like we are two broken souls aching to find some meaning in our lives. Something that makes living in this hellhole worthwhile.

“Stop pretending, Stefan,” Elias said without any room for humor. “You know exactly what I mean.”

Yup, I know exactly what he meant. Which is why I am enjoying torturing him.
