Why are you helping me, Victor?

Freya

“So what do you plan on doing now?” Stacey asked after she had agreed to spy on Sonia for me. Since she wasn’t her attending doctor, she could still help out without being bothered about doctor-patient confidentiality. It's just that, the information she can give me would be really limited. I don't need much either, I just wanted someone to keep tabs on her. Someone other than me...

“A lot bit for now, I will get in touch with my partner and make some new plans.” I replied while she nodded.

“And do you trust this person? I mean, according to what you said, he was the one who texted out first. How are you sure he’s not just using you for his own selfish interest?” She quizzed.

“Because he’s getting something out of the deal too. I’m getting married to him. That was his only condition. He needs to take over his family’s business and that won’t be possible until he gets married. That’s where I come in. He helps me get revenge and I get married to him.”

“What? Freya, that’s ridiculous. How could you accept to marry a random stranger just because of a promise to get revenge for you? Marriage is a big deal!” She exclaimed.

“Not in this case. It’s only a contract marriage, it will last a year, after which we both go our separate ways. We both would have gotten what we wanted too.” I affirmed.

She went mute for about a minute before finally saying a word.

“So tell me, who is this guy? Have you even made your findings about him? Is he worthy of your trust and time?” She quizzed and that was when I realized I hadn’t thought of it. I just took his word for it and never bothered to look further.

“Freya! Oh my goodness…” Stacey exclaimed when I wouldn’t say a word, she figured the answer from my silence.

“What’s his name? What does he do?”

“His name is Victor… Victor Maddox and he’s a billionaire heir… he…” I stopped when I saw her face.

She was literally in a daze… she stood up before I could ask what was wrong. She then started to pace the room.

“Now I get it… now I understand…” that was what she kept muttering while I stood there, confused.

“You need to talk to me now, Stacey… you’re scaring me,” I managed to say.

“Victor Maddox is my brother… he’s my elder brother…” she let out and when it seemed like I didn’t believe her, she started to describe his features.

I still didn’t look too convinced, so she grabbed her phone and showed me a picture of both of them together.

I couldn’t even hold the phone properly, the strength in my arm suddenly failed me and I would have dropped the phone if she hadn’t caught it on time.

“I can’t believe he deceived me either. I trusted him, I had faith in his words.” I muttered, while Stacey quickly came over to my side.

“Calm down… Victor is my brother and I don’t think he deceived you. He might be a playboy, but he’s not a liar. He wouldn’t come to you if he didn’t mean to help you.”

“So why didn’t he tell me about you?”

“That’s simple. I don’t matter in your deal! There was no point telling you about me because it wouldn’t have added anything to your deal. You guys are together for business and that’s the thing about Victor. He doesn’t mix emotions with business.” She explained and then went mute.

“What again? What other thing is there that I don’t know about?” I asked.

“Nothing much, just that it’s all clear now. He did tell me he was getting married, and I was curious about the girl. I know he isn’t in any love relationship, so I wanted to know how he suddenly got a girl right when our father revealed his conditions for him to get his inheritance.”

“You were the girl who stood him up some time ago in the past.” I smirked when Stacey said this.

“No, I think I would know if I stood him up. Prior to when we met at her hotel, I hadn’t seen him before. He lied to you, or maybe you’re the one mixing it all up.”

“Freya Rodgers…” she started.

“The name didn’t ring a bell that evening when Victor came to my place, boiling with anger as he narrated how his date had stood him up. Our dad and your dad had agreed on the blind date and, surprisingly, Victor was eager to meet his date. He dressed up nicely only to return a few hours later, mad with anger.”

“He threatened to get revenge on the lady and was committed to it, only to let it all go after about a month. The outcome is his sudden thirst for marriage. I thought he was just being his weird self, but now, hearing everything you’ve said, I think I get it now.”

“Sonia, who is your best friend, blackmailed him, and is now planning to do the same to the woman who stood him up.”

“This is just one twisted thirst for revenge.” She finally stopped.

I had a lot of questions because I was already thinking and putting a lot of things together, but one thing was clear. Victor wasn’t straight with me. He’s no different from Sonia and Dennis who lie to my face every other day.

Asking Stacey those questions wouldn’t do much good. I needed to see and ask Victor himself.

“I need to leave now…” I said to Stacey and then grabbed my bag,

“You’re going to him, right?” I nodded affirmatively.

“It’s better, you deserve to know all the truth.” She chimed in and then leaned forward to hug me.

I thanked her for her time and help, and then left. She also urged me to rest well, but how could I do that? Not with all these issues that keep rising.

I hurried out of the building, hopped into my car and zoomed off.

I had gone some minutes before it occurred to me that I didn’t even know where Victor was. A part of me said he would be in the office, but what if he’s not there?

“Where are you?” I asked the second he answered the phone.

“At home presently, but I will soon be on my way to the office. I have a meeting at noon.” He let out.

“Stay right there. I’m on my way to you.” I retorted and then hung up, not minding what he was about to say.

In another thirty minutes, I was in his compound. I hurried out of the car and made straight for the door.

Just as my hand grabbed the handle, the door flung open and there he was. Standing in front of me with his oily broad chest was Victor. I gasped and lost my voice for a second before getting myself back.

“Good morning beautiful… wasn’t expecting to see you today… I guess my day is made now… maybe I’ll go gentle on my contenders when we meet later in the day.” He teased, expecting a return smile, but my face was straight.

“Oops… someone is in a bad mood… come in let’s talk…” he chimed in and then opened the door wide, so I could go in, but I didn’t.

“Why are you helping me out of nowhere, Victor? Have we met before? I mean, maybe there was a time that I stood you up, and now you want revenge?”

“What? You’ve suddenly lost your voice now? Come on, just tell me the truth? What’s your real motive behind all this you’re doing?” I continued when he wouldn’t say a word and just stood there, staring blankly at me.

“Why are you helping me, Victor??” I yelled with so much anger and force…
