Not again!
It had to be right this time.
Violet cupped her palms together, her eyes shut as she muttered every word of prayer.
Sitting in the Doctor's office, she tapped her feet rapidly on the floor, her nerves tingling with anxiousness.
As if this was the purpose of her existence, every day she stood on tenterhooks.
Violet was losing patience, and so was her husband, Clyde.
Many times he tried to hide it, masking his worry with indifference.
Yet, it was always evident in his demeanor whenever they spoke about having a baby.
“If you were a researcher, Mrs. Crawford, I bet you'd endure decades for a single breakthrough.”
The Doctor's words jolted her out of her thoughts.
Violet stiffened, her heart skipping a beat, anticipation and nervousness filling up her chest.
“W- What do you mean?” Her voice came out as a soft whisper as she rose to her feet, studying the middle-aged man's expression.
But the Doctor was all smiles.
Violet had never seen him so happy.
“Mrs. Crawford, congratulations. You're pregnant!”
Three years.
After three years, she was finally pregnant.
The news she looked forward to every day now sounded strange in her ears, inciting a foreign emotion.
She was pregnant!
Violet shook her head, tears of joy welling up in her eyes. “Don't pull my legs-”
“I wouldn't play such an expensive joke!” The Doctor chuckled. “For three years, you've been coming here every month. Isn't it to hear this single news?”
He was right!
And her dream was finally true.
Their dream.
Clyde would be over the moon.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!” Violet hugged the middle-aged man, letting her tears fall freely. “Clyde must reward you!”
“It's all due to your hard work, Mrs. Crawford.”
And Violet couldn't wait to share it with her husband.
She stormed out of the hospital with the pregnancy test results in her hands.
How would Clyde react?
Gosh! She couldn't wait to see the look on his face!
Heart brimming with happiness, Violet cuddled her abdomen as she sat in the backseat of the car.
What would her baby be like?
What gender would it be?
Would it look like her or Clyde?
Maybe she should give Clyde a phone call and tell him the news.
But what if she broke into tears and wasn't able to speak coherently?
Then Clyde might be worried she'd fallen into danger.
“Madam, I've never seen you unhappy.” The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror. “So I guess these are tears of joy. What's the good news?”
Violet wiped her tears.
Indeed, to the outside world, she was the happiest woman in a blissful marriage with a perfect husband.
If only the whole world knew how she'd cry herself to sleep every night.
Sometimes, Clyde would comfort her.
Sometimes, he'd just stay on the balcony, smoking cigarettes, and sharing her grief.
He'd stand up for her whenever his parents questioned her barrenness, telling them the problem was from him.
While the Doctor had assured them both that they were of sound health!
Violet chuckled, the driver's question slipping her mind.
He definitely wasn't supposed to be the next person to know she was pregnant.
Before others, Clyde had to know first.
What better way to do that than by surprising him?
“Take me to CJ Group.”
“Right away, Madam.”
After instructing the driver, Violet closed her eyes, taking deep breaths to calm down.
She never knew too much happiness could hurt. Her heart felt like bursting and her cheeks ached from smiling.
When the car pulled over in front of the skyscraper, she literally jumped out, racing inside the company.
“What's wrong with her?”
“Isn't that Mrs. Crawford?”
“Is she alright?”
Violet paid no heed to the employees’ murmurs.
A hundred pairs of eyes followed her, curious with questions.
She strode ahead and stepped inside the elevator that took her to the top floor.
The President's area was empty. Even the secretary wasn't present.
Hopefully, Clyde wasn't busy with an important meeting.
One thing Clyde was strict about was work.
Whenever he was at it, she'd move mountains and he wouldn't spare her his attention.
But Violet couldn't wait.
She paused in front of his door and lifted a hand to knock-
Then someone giggled.
Weird!
Was that a woman's voice?
Was Clyde watching TV?
“Clyde, stop it, please…” the sweet voice sounded again. “...Not here.”
“It's not like this is our first time,” said the familiar deep voice.
Clyde's voice.
Violet gasped, and her palm flew to her chest, feeling her rapid heartbeat.
Did she hear wrong?
That female voice… Cora.
Cora, his secretary?
“Why don't you ever use protection?” She giggled again, then came the shuffling sound of fabrics. “Will you be responsible if I fall pregnant?”
“Haven't you guessed why I make Violet eat birth control pills every day?” Clyde murmured. “It’s because I only want a baby with you.”
Birth control pills?Violet leaned against the door, her heart breaking into pieces. What was happening? Was her mind tricking her, making her imagine her husband's voice? Clyde would never-The shock froze her, and she stood rooted on the same spot, her ears picking up the rest of their conversation.“Quit joking, Clyde…” Cora said, her voice playful. “You and Violet are married. Why would you want a baby with me?”“Marrying Violet wasn't my choice,” Clyde grunted as if merely mentioning her name disgusted him. “If she hadn't interfered, you'd be Mrs. Crawford instead of her.”“Clyde, but your family likes Violet.”“That’s because she fooled my grandfather!” Clyde's voice turned darker. “She’s a gold digger. I'm only waiting for the perfect opportunity to chase her out!”Each word sliced through Violet's heart. Her shoulders trembled and her tears flowed like a dam. How funny. Clyde never loved her!How did he conceal this hate so perfectly?A gold-digger.He was the one who took
…In The Evening.Clyde returned to the Villa, the stillness in the atmosphere unsettling.Violet would normally receive him at the door.Where was she? For the first time in three years, the doorway was empty, the doors shut in fact. Strange!Clyde knocked, and a maid opened the doors instead. “Welcome home, Mr. Crawford.”Clyde wasn't listening to her greeting, his gaze traveling into the empty living room. Violet wasn't there. He walked past the maid, who scurried after him, her eyes darting around rapidly. “Mr. Crawford…” She stopped him, lowering her voice to a whisper. “Actually, we've run out of birth control pills. There's none to put inside Mrs. Crawford's dinner for tonight.”Violet's absence was more disturbing than the finished pills. Clyde frowned. “Where's she?”“Mrs. Crawford might be sleeping upstairs.” The maid scratched her head as if unsure of her own words. “She complained of a stomach ache in the morning.”Stomach ache?Violet rarely got sick! That was impo
…Five Years Later.Sitting on a balcony across from the vast ocean, the gentle morning wind breezed past, dancing with her hair. The same as time, the wind blew effortlessly and fast, leaving one wondering about the rapid progression of events. Surely, a single incident could sway one's destiny, forging a new path towards either happiness or hell. Which path was she headed to?“Ouch!” Violet winced, the sudden sharp pain from her finger snapping her out of her thoughts. Freya had accidentally clipped her nail deep, or maybe it wasn't by accident.Freya didn't look a bit apologetic even as she whispered, “Sorry,” with a playful wink. “Careful.” Throwing her an offensive look, Violet blew on the spot. She studied her fingernails, appreciating the perfection.Freya didn't have to go all out. It would have been a simple painting, and she would be contented.“Relax, Vi.” Freya smiled, studying her face. “Getting engaged is only the beginning of everlasting happiness. True happiness
Violet stilled, her heartbeat pausing for a second. As if an iced water had been poured over her, she shuddered. The same reaction over and over again. She'd always experience this shock, then dread whenever her daughter announced such a statement. The echoes of Mimi's tiny shoes on the floor jolted Violet to the present. Eyes shining happily like a million stars, Mimi jumped onto her lap and stared at her eagerly. “Mummy, believe me this time. I found my true Daddy!”In her little voice was a firm resolve that sent Violet's heart racing. Sigh! Why was she apprehensive when her daughter was always fond of this little drama?“What are you saying, Mimi?” Asher reached forward to pat her hair. “Your Daddy's right here…” He pointed towards himself. “... Me.” “Hold it, Uncle Asher.” Folding her chubby arms across her chest, Mimi gave him a pointed look. “If you were my Daddy, you'd have red hair.”Asher touched his hair. “Well, you don't have red hair either.”“That's the point.” Mimi
With Clyde, that happily ever after was never possible. The man who never wanted a child with her,How would he react when he found out about her daughter? What would Violet's life be like? What would Mimi's future look like? She couldn't burst her daughter's bubble, but maybe it was high time Violet told her the true nature of her father.Mimi rejected other men, saying her Daddy was better. Should Violet tell her that her father was the worst man on earth? That would be too brutal for a little girl's ears. But with each day that passed by, Mimi's resolve to find her real Daddy grew stronger. Her eagerness was even turning into a wild imagination that scared Violet. Because some times, those imaginations fit Clyde's description perfectly just like moments ago. The Next Morning.Violet woke up on the king-sized bed to find her daughter gone. She could recall Mimi whispering late in the night that she would resume the search for her Daddy this morning.Letting out a helpless sig
~Her Mummy!Where did this little girl come from?Where were her parents? She clung onto him like a koala, calling him foreign names he'd never heard of. Her Daddy. What the hell…“You'd better follow me to my Mummy right now,” the little girl added, her strength surprising Clyde as she pulled his legs. How funny!“Come on, Daddy-”“No!” Clyde repeated. “I'm not your father.”Then he noticed the stains on his pants. The little girl's hands must have come in contact with sand before she approached him.Sighting the dust on his pants, Clyde's frustration turned into annoyance. He moved his leg, shaking her off in the process.“Ouch!” The little girl landed butt-first on the sand. Shocked for a second, her eyes were wide before they watered up, gathering a pool of tears. She sniffled rapidly before her loud wails echoed in the area.Clyde's demeanor wavered, a guilty feeling kicking in. At the sight of the little girl crying, something tugged at his heartstrings.Strange! He pi
…At The Villa. Inside her bedroom, Violet walked back and forth, her heart racing. So many emotions overwhelmed her at once, and her heart felt like bursting. Was she dreaming? No, this was a nightmare.Clyde-He was here!Biting her fingernails rapidly, Violet shook her head. No! It wasn't Clyde. He wasn't that man she saw her daughter clinging onto. She must have seen wrong. She must have imagined his face.“Vi…” A knock came on the door. “Please open this door!” Freya! No!What if Violet opened the door and saw that man instead? Her brain must be making things up. She was having wild imaginations.“Come out of the room, please, Vi…” Freya called out again. “Everyone's worried.”Everyone was there when Violet ran back into the building, fleeing upstairs. As if she'd seen a ghost…Well, Violet's shock and dread weren't any less than that of someone who'd seen a ghost. But that man…Violet would never mistake him even in her dreams. Those features, his aura, and demeanor… th
So soon.Clyde showed his true nature to Mimi. The heartless man wouldn't spare even a little girl. Violet left the bedroom, coming outside to see her daughter's eyes puffy with tears. Her dress was dusty. She must have come in contact with sand. Anger mixed with pain clutched her heart. Squatting down, Violet drew Mimi into her embrace. “It's okay. Mummy's here.”But Freya found the situation funny. Standing up, she laughed. “Is it the Daddy you wouldn't shut up about since yesterday?”Mimi sniffled. “He's a meanie.”She wrapped her chubby arms around Violet, burying her head in her neck. Her tiny voice, mixed with sobs and sadness echoed in the hallway. “Mummy, why did Daddy push me away? I put on my best dress… I look prettier today, don't I, Mummy?”“Of course, Baby.” Violet sighed inside. Clyde didn't know…Still, how could he be so heartless to his own daughter? He could at least pretend to be nice by not pushing the little girl away. Where were his manners? How sad tha
Hearing that statement coming from him, Violet almost laughed out loud. Why did he look displeased by the gift his mistress just bought?“Yay, Daddy! You're the best!” Mimi let go of her and hurried to the man, hugging his leg tightly. “Where’s Grandma?” Clyde picked her up.He looked so happy and carefree as he spoke with her. “I bet you're having a great time with her.”“Grandma treats me well.” Mimi bobbed her head happily. “Grandma bought me a tablet and she promised to take me shopping later.”“Daddy, will you and Mummy come along?” Mimi added. “Grandma said there’s a huge mall that sells luxury things.”“If course, we'll go with you.”“I'm so sorry, Baby… Mummy's quite busy today.”They both said concurrently. Violet glanced at Clyde who stared at her in confusion. Seriously, she hated looking at his face. “It's okay, Mummy…” Mimi pursed her lips. “I'll miss you a lot, but Grandma and Daddy will be there with me.”Violet stood up with a sigh. She hated to see her baby being
Cora brought her baby some gifts.Folding her hands, Violet chortled. What trick was she up to this time? “Let me have a look,” She ordered the maid who followed her inside with the gift boxes. Violet opened them one after the other. There were a bunch of clothes inside one box, and the second box contained school materials. And then the third box contained all sorts of toys.“Wow, Ma’am Cora surely knows what the Little Young Miss needs!” The maid said in excitement. “I bet she loves her very much.”Love?Violet almost scoffed. She couldn't tell what Cora was up to this time, but she couldn't allow any shit to happen.“Dispose of them.” She pushed the gifts aside and ordered the maid, “Do that before Mimi sees them.”Because it would be hard to throw them away then as her baby might get tempted by the toys.“B- But, Young Miss-” The maid looked confused, stuttering as she packed the gifts together hesitantly. “What if it hurts Ma’am Cora's feelings? She's still here and she might
Well, that was embarrassing.Violet wished the ground would open up and swallow her whole.Shutting her eyes, she sank in embarrassment.Clyde didn't hear her moan, right? Urgh! Damnit! She was done for.How could she let his touch affect her so much? Why couldn't she get a hold of herself?Did she even have control over her body? She bit her lips, struggling to keep her heartbeat in check as the effect of his touch still lingered.Moments later, Violet was able to calm down. She opened her eyes, however, there was a storm in his eyes. Staring at her, Clyde's eyes darkened with desire, his Adam's apple bobbed up and down. He pressed forward and all the energy to push him away departed her. Her knees were the weakest, her entire body failing her at the moment.Honestly, Violet was afraid…This kind of effect the man had on her scared her to the core. When he leaned forward again, whispering in her ears, her insides melted immediately.“It's a servant from Grandpa's quarters,” Cly
Grandpa wanted to send her baby away? Violet's heart skipped a beat. That was too sudden. Sending Mimi to a children's boarding school abroad literally meant taking her away from her. No!Violet couldn't let that happen. “You can't believe it, but when she was with me yesterday, I found out my great-granddaughter has an extraordinary talent unlike other kids,” Grandpa Luke went on. “Remember you attended a similar school, Grandson. Imagine if my great-granddaughter grows up to be as astounding as you are.”Violet walked into the area, listening quietly. She sat on the chair beside Clyde as she greeted the old man good morning.“Ha! You're finally here, Violet!” Grandpa Luke chuckled. “I wanted to see you since yesterday, but you and this silly boy were occupied by something else, right?”The knowing look Grandpa Luke gave her made her uncomfortable.Honestly, did anything happen between her and Clyde? She glanced toward the man. However, Clyde quickly looked away. That was fishy.
…Violet woke up with a splitting headache the next morning. Her eyelids felt heavy. Her whole body was sore, a numbing feeling spreading across her chest. What happened to her? Where was she?How did she end up here?Looking around the bedroom, she frowned in confusion. The more she struggled to recall, the more her headache increased. The room looked familiar though. Was she inside the mansion?Where was Freya? And her baby… wait a minute.Violet gasped as it all began coming back. The last time she saw Mimi was at a similar time. Was it yesterday? No way!Yesterday, she and Freya met Asher. Then they visited a restaurant, and then a mall before proceeding to the bar-No!Violet gasped, wrapping both arms around her. Strange how she couldn't recall all that happened after that.“Good morning, Young Miss…” A knock came from the door and the maid stepped inside, holding a tray with a bowl and some dishes on it. “Oh, you're finally awake.” The maid smiled. “The Young Master orde
She stared at him, her arms wrapped around his neck. Waiting for her to push him away or put up a fight, imagine his surprise when she slowly nodded.Clyde sighed in relief. He stepped inside the bathroom with her, a crazy idea cooking up.What if he got her drunk every day so she could always be this obedient?Well, that would be silly. Clyde turned up the water in the bathtub, making sure it was the right temperature. He dropped her favorite fragrant shower soap in it, letting it stir until bubbles formed. And then he carefully dropped her in the tub. Violet shivered before adjusting to the temperature.Closing her eyes, she let out a soft moan. Clyde was about to head to the shower, but she pulled him back. “Won't you give me a bath anymore?”No!He changed his mind just a second after hearing her moan.Clyde had underestimated himself. He'd thought he could observe self-control,Well, he'd rather save his life before she ended it in the morning. “Wash up.” He gave her the soa
Their bodies swayed and they were literally falling on each other. After the taxi driver helped them out of the car, he hurried to the driver's seat and zoomed off.Clyde couldn't take his eyes off the ladies as they felt very familiar. When the streetlight flashed on their faces his intuition became right.Where the hell were they coming from?“Speak about luck!” Harry smiled. “Isn't that your brave wife, Buddy?”Clyde hurried in the direction before they could think about crossing the street. They didn't look alright as they swayed back and forth. What happened to them, especially Violet, who seemed as if she was dozing off in Freya's arms? “Hey, that's my heartless husband.” She rubbed her eyes and squinted them at him. One arm spread across her friend's shoulders, she staggered forward and tumbled into his arms. Clyde caught her quickly, his heart racing. “Violet…” he patted her cheeks. “Why do you look like this?”“Huh? Like what?” She hiccuped. A deep stench of wine hit h
They jumped off the fence!Clyde was about to pick up his tablet when that word halted him.He glanced at the guy.Harry didn't seem to be pulling his legs.So Violet escaped. She was going to return, right? She wasn't gonna back out of her promise. Why the hell did she jump off the fence when the gates were wide enough for twenty more persons like her to pass through? What if she never came back?Well, Violet would never leave Mimi behind,But!“Your wife is quite interesting.” Harry continued, unaware of the turmoil in his heart. “She made such a dramatic entrance last night. If I knew she was so enterprising, I wouldn't have wasted those many years outside the country. Ah, I wonder how fun your wedding was.”His wedding wasn't any fun. Violet preferred it low-key.Except for the family members and close business allies, not even the media was invited. The Violet from five years ago was a completely different character from the current Violet. His wife wouldn't skip from a single s
…At The Crawford Mansion. It had been hours already. She didn't even show up for lunch. Was she still mad at him? Where was she?As Clyde sat on a couch inside the study room with a tablet in his hands, he would glance at his wristwatch now and then. He'd considered giving Violet some space for her anger to go away,But now, he was beginning to worry. He hadn't seen her again ever since she left the room in the morning. She wouldn't go to his parents’ quarters either. Was she with Grandpa Luke?Unable to pay attention to the article he was reading, Clyde dropped the tablet. He couldn't give in to her request. She had a valid reason for demanding they move to the Villa,But Clyde wouldn't take any chances. His grandfather was extremely pleased that he'd decided to live here with his family. If he suddenly moved out, wouldn't it anger the old man?Besides, there was a high chance that his grandfather wouldn't agree. His parents wouldn't agree either, especially his mother who demand
