NEIL
“Just because they’re from a royal family, they think everyone can take their shit,” Austin scoffed as he sipped his Bourbon. He was pissed off that his British client was being a stick in his ass. It was funny but I wouldn’t dare laugh because I knew he was pissed off.
Being a lawyer meant he had to encounter people who wouldn’t mind if their pride would get them being bars for more than ten years. People like me.
“Honestly, I don’t care if he rots in jail. Who the fuck rapes a girl and then forces her to abort the child?” he snapped and downed the rest of his drink with one go.
“The duke’s cousin,” I stated and he glared at me, making me chuckle. “You what another whiskey or vodka?” I asked and he scoffed.
He was about to say something when his eyes caught something behind me and a smile pulled on his lips. I narrowed my eyes at him, “What?”
“She knows how to capture every man’s attention without even trying,” he said with a chuckle and, somehow, I already knew who he was referring to. Someone walked past me and the familiar scent of Vanilla and Jasmine filled my nose making me inhale deeply, fighting the urge to close my eyes.
She stood in front of us and then my eyes fell on her. She was dressed in a light green dress that did more than enough justice to her creamy skin. She had her hair down, and I wouldn’t lie, I preferred it this way over her usual ponytail.
“Good morning, Austin,” she smiled at my best friend and then turned to me, “good morning, sir.” I wanted to tell her to drop the formalities but I nodded instead.
Austin decided to do the talking, “You look lovely, Vera. Take a seat.” She smiled in appreciation and took a seat in front of us, directly opposite me, giving me a perfect view. Fuck, she was attractive.
The sundress had thin straps, showing her unblemished smooth skin. And I found it hard to take my eyes off her. She raised her eyes to look at me and quickly averted them to the menu on the table.
“What would you like to order?” Austin asked her as he flagged a waiter. I picked up my menu, my eyes flickering over Vera as she bit her lower lip. I clenched my jaw as different thoughts flooded my head. She looked so innocent as she tapped her chin with her index finger.
Remembering how sweet she tasted, I had the sudden urge to kiss her.
“I don’t know,” she mumbled softly with a small pout because she couldn’t choose. Austin turned to me and I looked at him.
“What about you, man?”
“A croissant and a sliced baguette with coffee,” I said to the waiter that was standing beside me. He nodded, writing it down and then looking at Vera. I felt my anger tick when I saw a flash in his eyes. He was attracted to her, but Vera wouldn’t notice.
“She will be having the same thing,” I stated before he could utter a word to her. Both of them snapped their attention to me and I looked at her, daring her to object. She blinked and nodded before offering a kind smile to the waiter.
“I guess I’ll have the same,” she said with a underlying sarcasm and I nearly scoffed. Austin made his order and the annoying waiter walked away. From the corner of my eye, I could see Vera glaring at me. She could be mad at me for all I care, but I wasn’t going to let that boy make a move on her, not in front of me.
“How are you feeling now, Vera?” Austin asked, trying to clear the tension in the air. Vera seemed grateful and spoke.
“I feel better than before. Thank you very much for yesterday,” she said and then turned to me. I shrugged.
“Remember to rest,” I reminded her and she sighed, rolling her eyes big I could see a small smile playing on her lips.
I spent the next few minutes listening to them converse over something until they brought our food.
Today was going to be a long day.
The atmosphere was surprisingly not as awkward as I had expected, apart from Vera’s occasional shifts in her seat. But still, I couldn’t stop myself from glancing at her very chance I got.
“We’re going to the beach later in the afternoon, would you like to join us?” Austin asked her as we walked out of the restaurant. I didn’t even bother to look at them as I headed towards my car.
Knowing him, he’d convince her if she tried to turn down the offer. Having a relationship with a colleague will never end well. I made that mistake once and I will never make it again. But Austin didn’t understand that.
Whenever he realizes there’s an attraction between a girl and I, he automatically starts to act like he’s cupid. It was irritating.
I told myself, never again. No more distractions, no more complications. And hey, here Vera was, making me question every damn rule o had made for myself.
“That’s great! I need to go somewhere where—Neil!” I turned to see Austin calling my name. I raised a brow as I watched him walk over to me with Vera.
“I need to meet with Ben. Please take Vera back. I would have done it, but you know…” he said with a big smile and I fought the urge to roll my eyes.
There was no Ben. He was going to walk back into that restaurant and find a few girls to flirt with.
I nodded and looked at Vera. She was looking at anywhere but me, it annoyed me most of the times.
“Bye, guys,” he said with a grin and waved, turning around.
I walked over to the passenger seat and opened the door. Her eyes snapped to me and I could see a light trace of blush on her cheeks as she blinked, her lashes fluttering in an innocent but alluring way.
Damn you, Austin!
“Thank you,” she said with a small smile as she approached me and got in the car. I closed the door and inhaled deeply. There were still traced of her vanilla scent in the air and oddly, it calmed my nerves.
I walked to the other side and got in the driver’s seat. I ignited the engine and began to drive.
VERAI spent the rest of the morning sleeping. It felt as though my body decided to shut down on its own. Honestly, it was worth it. I hadn’t slept that good in days and somehow, this felt like a vacation. A vacation that I needed. But unfortunately, by tomorrow, I’ll be back in the office, running here and there, carrying out Neil’s endless orders.“I really need to stop calling him Neil,” I mumbled as I wrapped a towel around my body and made my way to the closet to look for a swim suit. I didn’t remember packing any because I knew I wouldn’t have the opportunity to go to the beach. But you know, life can be full of surprises.Raising a brow, I stopped short when I spotted a blue two-piece set lying neatly on top of my clothes. How had I missed that earlier? Picking it up, my eyes widened as I instantly realized who had packed it.Yvonne.“She will be the reason I lose my job. How am I supposed to wear this without looking like…” I groaned as I threw the fabric on my bed and pulled
“Do you like it?”I looked at Yvonne who was looking at me expectantly. I looked back at my reflection in the mirror and turned so I could see the dress from other angle. It was beautiful, simple and yet exquisite.“Yes, I do. The fabric is heavenly,” I said and she clapped happily.“I designed it just for you!” My friend squealed as she got up to her feet and approached me. I was glad she was happy. And appreciated that she designed this dress for me.“Just wait till you see your wedding dress. I’m not done with that yet though,” she said with a small chuckle and walked around me slowly.I was wearing a cream colored full length gown that had a beautiful corset-like design that accentuated my bust and waist. I was smaller in the chest size but this really did well for me.I liked the long balloon sleeves and the way the skirt hugged my hips. All in all, I looked beautiful. I was right to give a Yvonne the job to make my engagement dress.Perks of having a friend that’s a designer.“W
Today was the D-day and I was not ready at all. Berlin kept calling me for the past few days but I didn’t pick his calls because I had nothing to say to him.“My dear, you look so beautiful. This dress is amazing!” My mum showered me with compliments as the makeup artist did her work on my face. If it was another time, I would have smiled.“Thank you, mum. Is Yvonne here?” I asked her.She nodded, “She’s helping the others in welcoming the guests. Have you seen Berlin? He looks so handsome “ My stomach churned when she brought him up. Did she have to?I didn’t want her to notice my change in mood, so I brought out my phone and sent a text to Yvonne, letting her know I’ll soon be out.“I’m going out now. I want to go and greet the guests. Don’t waste too much time,” mum said and patted my shoulder before walking out. She was so joyful that it made my heart hurt.“You don’t look too happy,” my makeup artist said, making me blink in surprise. How could she tell?“I’m just overwhelmed. I
When I got home, I stripped out of my dress and switched off my phone that had been blowing up before going straight to the bathroom.I looked in the mirror and pressed my lips together when I saw that my cheeks was red and swollen. My mother had never slapped me before. She must have been so angry because my cheek was really hurting. My heart sunk into my chest at the realization that I had actually embarrassed my family. But what hurt more was what my mother had said.“Not now,” I took in a deep breath and went into the bathtub. The warm water did nothing to soothe my aching muscles and withering soul.My life was a mess now. When I had enough of soaking in the water, I got out an dried myself before slipping into my robe. I tied my hair up in a bun and went to my living room. I sat down on the floor beside the couch and laid my head on it.That was the only thing I could do at the moment.I sat there for a long time until I heard the doorbell. I slowly raised my head, wandering who
“This is your fourth drink. You need to take it easy, babe,” Yvonne said, grabbing the empty shot cup from my hand. I nodded at her words and gave her a thumbs up. I wasn’t drunk yet and it was getting me annoyed.“I’m not going to do anything stupid, allow me to get drunk,” I sighed and rested my head on the counter. After I left my father’s house to return home, Yvonne offered to go to the club in the evening. Needing to get my mind off things, I agreed.Well, the situation hadn’t changed at all. I got more irritated when men would approach me with stupid pick up lines and try to buy me a drink.“Stop with this face, babe. I really don’t like it,” Yvonne said to me but I ignored her and waved down the bartender.“Can I have another shot? And keep them coming please,” I told the hot bartender. He looked at me with a worried look before turning to Yvonne.“Is your friend alright?” he asked and Yvonne shook her head telling him no. I huffed and crossed my arms across my chest.“Aren’t
I got down from the bend, wincing when I felt the undeniable ache in between my legs. I saw a paper on the nightstand and I went to pick it up. The handwriting was cursive and I wondered if this person was a pampered kid while growing up.‘I left for work. Take your time and leave when you’re ready. Last night was…unexpected’I crumpled the paper and buried my face in my hands. Who did I sleep with? I didn’t even know his name. I closed my eyes and an image of a man popped up on my head. Green eyes…I remembered him! I had met him at my apartment building before. But I can’t remember when….and then I met him yesterday and he gave me the night of my life? Was he stalking me?My phone!I searched for my bag and found it by the bedside. I grabbed it and fished out my phone. I switched it on and cringed when I saw a lot of missed calls from Yvonne. My phone was flooded with text messages from her too. I opened the text messages and read them. The first ones were random check-ins and pictu
Three months had passed, and they were, without a doubt, the worst months of my life. I had left my father’s company, hoping to find a fresh start, a place where I could prove myself on my own terms. But I hadn’t expected this—being turned down by every company I applied to. My résumé was impressive, yet somehow, nobody seemed to be hiring. The rejection emails became a routine, a painful reminder of my new reality. But last week, everything changed. Yvonne, my best friend and saving grace, had called me with a glimmer of hope. “There’s an opening for a P.A. at TerraLink,” she had said excitedly. It was the break I had been desperately waiting for. Without wasting a second, I drove straight to the TerraLink building, heart pounding with the possibility of finally achieving my dream. My father had always refused to let me work there, insisting on keeping me under his wing. But this was my chance, my one shot at independence. To cut the story short—I got the job. Today was my first offi
“That will be all for today. Don’t forget the changes I made. I want a revised version on my desk by tomorrow morning,” Mr. Railway announced, his voice crisp and commanding. Everyone around the table nodded in unison, gathering their belongings as they rose from their seats. I watched him, the way his fingers danced over his phone as he typed—elegant, swift, almost mesmerizing. Everything about him was attractive, a dangerous distraction I couldn’t afford.Swallowing my errant thoughts, I stood up, smoothed my skirt, and walked out of the conference room. If he was determined to act like that night had never happened, then I had no problem doing the same.Back in my office, I let out a sigh of relief. For a few minutes, I could breathe before diving back into the chaos of the day. I opened my iPad, pulling up the contract we were about to close with King’s Publishing Company. They were eager to collaborate with our new software, but in exchange, they offered only thirty percent of the

VERAI couldn’t fall back asleep, so I decided to return to my room. Grabbing my dress and heels from the edge of the bed, I picked up my phone and slipped out quietly.A sigh of relief escaped me when I finally reached my room. Tossing my things onto the chair, I made my way to the bed. Stripping out of Neil’s shirt, I stood completely naked for a moment before climbing under the covers.Oddly, the bed felt harder than his.Wait—why was I calling him Neil?I cleared my throat and sat up, running my fingers through my hair. From where I sat, I could see my reflection in the closet mirror. My eyes traced over my body—from the curve of my small breasts down to my wide hips.I’ve never been ashamed of my small chest, but almost every man I’d been with seemed to prefer women with more. It didn’t bother me until they started cheating.Funny how I thought Berlin would’ve been different. Even though he was an asshole most of the time, I thought he respected me. I really did.I glanced down a
VERAI sat there, staring at the door that Mr. Railway had left through for the past thirty minutes. No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t comprehend what happened. My heart hadn’t calmeddown and my mind wasn’t still clear.I swallowed and got out of bed. My head aches a little, but I knew I needed a shower if I wanted to let everything sink in. My legs nearly gave out on me as I walked to the bathroom and stripped out of my clothes before getting into the shower. The water was warm, making my muscles relax. I then remembered the incident that led to me being here like this. I wrapped my arms around my body, it was like I could still feel that man’s eyes on my body. It made shudder and I closed my eyes shut, wanting the feeling to go away. I could still feel his dirty eyes and touch on my skin. Then I remembered how Mr. Railway came to save me. How he had beaten the life out of that slug and called the police. A small smile made its way to my face as I remembered how he carried me in
NEILI was furious. I wanted to punch something—scratch that, I wanted to punch that sick bastard in his fucking face. The only thing that was stopping me from going to the police station to beat the living daylights out of Aubert was the woman laying in my bed.“She may suffer a mild concussion because she really hit her head hard,” Dr. Kelsey said and my jaw clenched.I looked down at Veronica, her face pale against my dark sheets. My shirt looked impossibly large on her, swallowing her petite frame. Anger boiled in my chest again. I could still see the faint trace of blood on her arm, even after Dr. Kelsey cleaned the wound. That bastard.“She’ll heal,” Dr. Kelsey said, her voice gentle but firm. “You’ll just need to make sure she rests. No stress.”I nodded, forcing the lump in my throat down. Stress was an understatement. Veronica hadn’t just been hurt—she’d been terrified. And I couldn’t shake the memory of her trembling in my arms as I carried her home.“It will heal, I’ve trea
Boredom had led me to drink three glasses of champagne in the last twenty minutes, and I was certain that if I had one more, I’d be seeing stars. I could feel myself getting tipsy, and I needed to find a way to excuse myself before I embarrassed myself in the worst possible way.“Excuse me,” a beautiful blonde lady approached me. Her bright blue eyes were the first thing I noticed as she came closer. Then I took in her height—she was tall, slim, and had beautifully tanned skin. She was the epitome of beauty, and she knew it.“Good evening, my name is Adeline,” she introduced herself, her thick French accent adding a certain charm to her words. I cleared my throat, trying to regain my composure, trying my best not to get intimidated .“I’m Veronica,” I replied, suddenly self-conscious under her gaze. Her hair was almost golden, and I found it difficult to look away from her. If anyone had told me she was a model, I wouldn’t have doubted it for a second. I envied her beauty—it was magne
The party was in full swing, a glittering affair of high society elites mingling effortlessly, their laughter and chatter echoing through the grand ballroom. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting fragmented light across the room like stars in a polished night sky. Servers glided through the crowd, offering trays of champagne and appetizers, their practiced grace blending seamlessly into the opulence of the evening.I was impressed. Even I, couldn’t pull it off at all.I clutched my champagne flute tightly, it’s cool stem grounding me as I fought the creeping unease breathing to choke me. The faces around me were unfamiliar, save for the occasional nods and greetings directed Mr. Railway. I was, quite frankly, out of my depth.“Smile, Veronica,” I whispered to myself, pasting on the same polite expression I had on all evening. Mr. Railway had been kind enough to introduce me to a few of his clients earlier, but I quickly grew weary of the thinly veiled judgements hidden behind
Sunday came earlier than I had anticipated and I was already in a taxi taking me to the airport. I couldn’t even explain how nervous I was about the trip. It wasn’t like I hadn’t travelled to places with my dad, but this was Mr. Railway. It was totally different. When I told Yvonne about it, she wouldn’t stop making up different scenarios and telling me about them. It was funny at first but later, I wanted to throw her out of the window. That woman can imagine unimaginable things.“We are here, miss,” the driver said, bringing me out of my trance. I grabbed my bag and paid him before stepping outside. It was just a trip for two days, so I didn’t need to take much clothes or other things.I was dressed in a pair of black suit pants and a brown shirt. I wasn’t keen on dressing up today but Mr. Railway had a meeting to attend to immediately we arrive at France. I had my hair tied up in a ponytail and I exchanged my heels for flat shoes. I was going to look shorter but it didn’t matter.“
I woke up to the loud ringing of my phone. My head rang as I searched for it on my nightstand, wanting to get rid of the loudness. I finally found it and picked up. “What?” I snapped in annoyance, my eyes still closed as I rubbed my temples with my free hand. “What a nice way to talk to your boss, Ms. Maslow,” Mr. Railway’s deep voice exploded in my head making me jolt into a sitting position. I lost my balance and fell off the bed with a loud thud. “Ouch!” I cried in pain when I hit my forehead on my nightstand. Another cry left me as the pain shot through my head making me groan loudly. My eyes snapped open as I remembered I was still on a call with Mr. Railway. Embarrassment filled me and I was tempted to hang up. I covered my face in shame, not saying anything as I tried to hide myself in the silence. “Veronica?” My ears perked up and my fingers parted to let my eyes peek through. Did he just call my name? Like my name? “Sir?” my voice sounded so awful that it made me cringe
