A few days later.
* “Where are you coming from?” Wendy asked as Kaylie entered the parlor, her right leg crossed on the left with her arms folded on her chest. Kaylie sighed and closed the door behind her. She didn’t interact and wouldn’t have stepped out of her room if not for Jaxon she was searching for and, since she didn’t want to get into an argument, she ignored her, heading to her room. Wendy stood and rushed to her front. “Why are you getting worse every day?” She challenged. She exhaled softly, her hand placed on her chest. “The thought of not having to tolerate you for a longer time makes me so happy.” Kaylie furrowed her face, unclear. “What do you mean?” Wendy giggled. “Don’t be in a hurry; you’ll figure it out soon,” she said. She returned to the sofa and sat, staring at Kaylie’s face, her lips tinted with a smile. “Congratulations in advance, big sis.” Kaylie withered her forehead, confused, her eyes fixed on Wendy, who was no longer looking at her. She was confused and curious, but since she knew Wendy wouldn’t tell her, she took her eyes off and walked into her room. *Moments later* Andrew knocked on the door, and without waiting for a response, he banged into the room with a paper in his hand. He walked to the bedside, and before Kaylie could lift her head from the pillow, he threw the paper at her. “Sign it,” he commanded. “Don’t read the conditions; who are you not to agree to it by the way?” Kaylie sat up. “What’s it?” She asked, reaching out for the paper. She picked it up and furrowed her face at it, asking again, “what’s this?” Andrew summoned his courage to look at Kaylie’s face. “An arranged marriage contract.” He proclaimed and quickly glanced away from her again. He had been disquieted lately and didn’t have the guts to look straight at her face, unknown whether it was out of pity or guilt. Kaylie’s eyes slammed shut. “An arranged marriage?!” He nodded. “Yes,” he confirmed. “Both families already agreed to it. All that’s left is your signature, which you’ll apply now. Be fast about it.” “But…” she stammered. “I… how’s… that’s… I…” Andrew looked at his wristwatch and returned his gaze to her. “You’ve no right to think about this, but I’ll give you until evening,” he said. “Be sure it’s signed before I return.” Without waiting for a response, he veered around and left the room. Kaylie gawked; her eyes widened, feeling her heart ripping apart. After staring at the entrance, dumbfounded for a few seconds, she took her eyes off it and scoffed softly. She hadn’t healed from a wound they caused her, and now, they’re trying to throw her into another pitch. The pain they caused her was always worse than the previous one. She glanced at the paper again and giggled for a reason she didn’t know. She wouldn’t accept the marriage but still wanted to check its content. She opened the first page and her eyes broadened at the headline, staring at the name written next to hers. “Huh?!” She was shocked. “Garcia Gage?!” She uttered in disbelief. Her lips quivered and she couldn’t utter a word, despite a lot passing through her mind. She furrowed her brows. “What are they doing?” She wondered and after a second thought, her mind processed the marriage’s purpose, causing her to chuckle softly. “They’re trading me for a connection?” She paused for the following second. However, things were getting interesting, so she opened the next page. “What?!” She was gobsmacked, seeing her parents’ signature beneath Chairman Paul and his wife’s signature. She snickered twice and withered her face. “How could they approve it without my consent?” She wondered, her mind slowly boiling in anger. She couldn’t take it anymore. She wouldn’t read further. She wanted to close the file, but her eyes caught a glimpse of the date at the last line. “Next week?!” “Why will I get married in a week?!” She didn’t want the marriage and would do anything to thwart it. However, the wedding date was around the corner, making her instantly doubt whether she could do anything before then. She lightly bit the left side of her lower lip. “What can I do?” She thought. “What should I do?” Her grandfather was the only one in the position to save her, but he wasn’t back yet, and all her efforts to find him were abortive. She had a onetime glance at the paper in her hand and furiously shook her head, throwing it away. “No!” She screamed. “I can’t sign this!” “I will not sign it! No!” * -Later in the evening- She heard a knock on the door and paused the music. The thought of all she was going through was freaking her out, so she was listening to music to unwind her mind. She lifted her from the bed header and took off the earpiece. She got down from the bed and walked to the door. She unlocked it and returned to the bed. Andrew heard the door click and expected Kaylie would open it for him to come in, but since she didn’t, he helped himself and entered. “Why did you lock the door?” He questioned. “Because no one respects my privacy and I want to earn it,” she taunted with an immediate response, without glancing backward at him. She arrived beside the bed and sat. She crossed her feet, her lips tinted with a smile, staring into his eyes. “I understand I’m not welcome here, but since I’m staying, I need my privacy. So I won’t tolerate anyone banging in again.” Her words piled him up, but he ignored them and lowered his gaze, stating, “I’m here for the paper.” Kaylie nodded, beaming. “I know,” she spoke calmly. She crossed her hands over her chest and stretched her neck, gesturing to the bedside cabinet with her lips. “There.” Andrew stared at Kaylie for a second, surprised at how bold she had suddenly become. He took his eyes off her and paced to the cabinet. He picked up the paper and hurriedly opened the page that required Kaylie’s signature. He rushed to her front, pointing it at her to show the blank space under her name. “Why haven’t you signed it?” He asked, keeping his voice low to hide the anger burning in his mind, but she didn’t respond so he couldn’t help raising his voice, shaking the paper. “I said why haven’t you signed it?!” She calmly nodded. “Yes,” she responded. Her voice was cool, yet blunt. She paused for a second before adding with a candid expression, “and with the look of the situation, I will not.” “You won’t?!” Andrew repeated, amazed. Kaylie’s words, and actions were surprising, and he scoffed, belittling. “What right do you think you have to decide whether or not you will?” Kaylie authoritatively lifted her brows and looked into his eyes. “Because I am an adult…” she gave a simple response, instantly proceeding, “I’ve got every right to make my decision at this age, and if you doubt that, sue me in court.” Her response and gaze got under his skin and his eyes instantly reddened. He ground his teeth, lightly tapping on his chest. “I’m the head of this family and-” Her laughter interrupted him. “You’re the head of this family?” She repeated, surprised. She furrowed her face, throwing a question. “Have you eliminated Jaxon?” “Huh?!” He sounded; her question caught him off guard. “Yes,” she confirmed. “I mean, who doesn’t know he’s the head of this family? And you can’t take his position unless you’ve eliminated him?” She shrugged. “And even if you are, do you have a say?” She bashed. “We know the person in charge, don’t we?” Andrew was speechless and stared down, unable to defend himself. Kaylie smiled discreetly. “Stop claiming what’s not yours,” she proceeded. “Jaxon’s absence doesn’t give you the right. Your wife is the decision maker; you’re weak to be one.” Her last line pushed his button. “Enough!” He yelled, but she didn’t want to stop. “Are-” “Shut up, Kaylie!” He shouted. “Enough of your gibberish!” He strode closer to her. “Look, Jaxon isn’t around, so you’ve got no chance. I’m your father and I’ll dictate your fate. So whether or not you want this marriage doesn’t matter,” he let out. “You’re marrying Gage because I say so!” Kaylie’s eyes turned red and she couldn’t maintain her calmness anymore. “What if I refuse?” She yelled, frustrated. “Is there anything you can do?” She stood on her feet and Andrew stepped backward in shock, fear suddenly overwhelming him as if she would hit him. She took a step forward and locked eyes with him. “Why must I always abide by whatever you want?! Why must I be the scapegoat?!” She paused and scoffed, slightly staring downward. “Because you’re my adoptive parent?” She asked and raised her gaze again, staring at him in the eyes. “Why did you adopt me when you don’t have enough love to share with me?” She tapped her left palm with the right dorsum. “What action did you take when Wendy snatched my ex-husband? Weren’t you just watching?” She queried. “You watched your wife maltreat me and did nothing to stop her? Were you not my father, then?” “Why didn’t you take responsibility during those times? Why are you mentioning being my father now that I’m against my will?” She questioned. “What use were you to me that is enough to convince me?” She puffed and paused for a second before furthering, “I’m dealing with pains caused by you, your wife, and your daughter, and here you are, wanting to push me into another calamity.” She frowned, glimpsing at him. “Isn’t this wickedness? Shouldn’t you at least let me heal before pushing me into another trouble? I need my time. I need time to heal.” “This isn’t a trouble; it’s a marriage.” Andrew corrected. “Then let Wendy take it instead.” She provided an alternative. “Huh?!” Andrew wasn’t expecting that. Kaylie folded her arms and elevated her shoulder. “Yes. Since it’s just a marriage, why me, not Wendy?” She challenged. “It’s obvious you’re trading me off for a favor from the Garcia. They’re the wealthiest family in the city, so you want me to marry their eldest son for a connection with them in return, right?” She expressed. “It’ll be more favorable if it’s your biological daughter?” “I’m more like an enemy to you now. Don’t you think I can betray you?” “Yes, you can, but that’s not the issue here…” Emily's voice came as the door opened. She walked to stand next to Andrew, facing Kaylie, explaining, “you’re right. It would be more beneficial if Wendy should marry Gage instead of you, but there’s a twist.” Kaylie’s face furrowed. “A twist?” She uttered, confused. Emily nodded twice. “Exactly,” she confirmed, explaining, “Wendy can’t marry Gage instead of you because this marriage's purpose differs from what you think.” “What do you mean?” Kaylie asked. “It means this marriage isn’t for connection, but to pay off a debt.” Emily proclaimed. Kaylie scoffed. “To pay a debt?” She repeated in disbelief. She crossed her hand over her chest, bending to the left a little as she locked eyes with Emily. “You want to marry me off to pay a debt and could even say it to my face?” “Do you expect I’ll accept?” Emily slowly shook her head. “No,” she answered. She paused, shrugging, as she took a deep breath. “I don’t expect you’ll accept. However, what will you do when the is Jaxon and not your father or me?” Kaylie frowned at her. “Jaxon’s debt?” She asked. “What are you talking about? What does that mean? Answer me!” Emily loosened her hands from her chest and sighed. “It means only one thing, and since your father had been keeping it from you all this while, I’ll take the responsibility to tell you,” she said. “Jaxon owes the Garcia. He owes them a huge amount of money.” “Huh?!” Kaylie toned in disbelief. She couldn’t believe what she just heard. She swiftly shook her head in opposition. “No. that’s not possible. It’s a lie!” Emily calmly nodded. “Okay, if you think so,” she uttered. “But why do you think he had been hiding since all this while? We’ve been keeping it a secret because we don’t want to hurt your feelings, but things have gotten worse.” “What he owes is a lot compared to what the Garcia requests and who are we not to give it?” “But Jaxon would never do that,” Kaylie protested. “I trust him. He wouldn’t marry me off to pay his debt.” “You’re right; this isn’t Jaxon’s decision, but me and your father’s,” Emily revealed. “And it’s like this because that’s how it should be. You’re Jaxon’s favorite; his beloved granddaughter so you should do this for him. He doesn’t like Wendy so you can’t expect she would do this for him.” “But-” Kaylie had an opinion, but Emily didn’t allow her to complete her statement. “Kaylie, this is Jaxon’s only chance. The amount he owes is huge. He can’t pay it in his lifetime,” Emily implored with an appeasing tone, manipulating, “if truly you love him, if you really care about Jaxon, you shouldn’t give this a second time before accepting it unless you want him to commit suicide or die of depression.” “How come? What leads to the debt?” Kaylie was still in doubt. “He collected a loan from chairman Paul to invest in a business but used it to run an illegal deal with a foreign and was duped. He keeps it a secret until everything backfires.” Emily narrated. Andrew joggled his head, backing her up. “Yes, that’s true. We only found out when Chairman Paul started searching for him and that was a few weeks or a month after your wedding.” Kaylie exhaled softly and brushed her face with her palms. She had lost her gut to the shocking news and her feet suddenly began shaking. She moved backward and sat on the bed. “Jaxon…” she called in a whisper. “We’ve until tomorrow to give chairman Paul feedback or the matter will get out of hand,” Emily informed. “Jaxon’s secret will be revealed to the public, and if that should happen, you know what it means, right?” “Father will lose his reputation and since he’s run an illegal business, the government will be involved. They’ll search until they find him and he’ll face the law,” Andrew analyzed. “If things should get that worse, no one can save him, and your beloved grandfather will have to spend the rest of his life in jail.” “Will you want that to happen?” Emily threw a question immediately as Andrew stopped talking. “And lastly, Kaylie, think about how Jaxon will feel if he finds out you have the chance to save him, but didn’t,” “He’ll hate you, blame himself, and regret ever showing you love. He’ll take his last breath holding a grudge against you in his heart,” Emily reduced her voice volume so her words would sink into Kaylie’s heart. “All these, do you want them to happen?” Kaylie caged her head in her hands with her eyes closed as she tossed her head. “No!” She screamed. She panted for a minute and gradually opened her eyes. She licked her lips and took a deep breath before raising her head. “If I sign it, will Jaxon come out of hiding and be safe?” Emily nodded. “Yes, of course,” she assured. “He’ll have nothing to worry about anymore.” She stared at Andrew and stretched out her hand. “The paper,” she requested. “I’ll sign it. I’ll marry Gage.”Kaylie was nervous. A part of her told her she had made a wrong decision that could destroy her, while the flustered part that signed the agreement kept pushing her. However, it was too late to have second thoughts–she was already in the car the Garcias had sent to pick her up. She had been in the car for over an hour, on her way to a blind date with an heir of a conglomerate family who had once been the talk of the city but disappeared without any explanation from his family. As the car slowed, Kaylie knew they were getting closer to the venue. Her heart started pounding fast, and she fidgeted as the timid part of her took over. She clutched the left part of her chest and half-closed her eyes as she drew out a short, yet deep, breath. “Stay calm, Kaylie,” she whispered. “Remember, you have got to save Jaxon. Okay?” The car finally turned into the grand entrance, and Kaylie’s anxiety spiked. The driveway, lined with tall trees and immaculately manicured hedges, led to the luxuriou
“Stop trying, Mr. Man, you're green to me. I see a green flag from your head down to the toe, so for no reason, I'm walking out of here,” she declared. “And even if I later do, it will be out of my free will, not your nonchalant attitude. Okay?” Gage ground his teeth. Kaylie's attitude kept pissing him off. He wished there was something to vent his anger on, but since there was none, he turned it into a statement. “Fuck you!” Kaylie beamed. “Same to you.” She uttered. Gage fixed his reddened eyes on Kaylie, but he couldn't say anything, while Kaylie also looked away from him. After a few minutes, Kaylie felt bored, and knowing the silence wouldn't solve the problem, especially his grandfather's freedom, she started the conversation. “Why don't you calm yourself?” She spoke in an appeasing tone. “Being rude to me won't solve the problem here; finding a solution will do.” Gage withered his face. He found a little sense in her words, so he asked, “What solution?” “We-” she opened
“Wow!” Kaylie awed immediately as the ironed crafted gate opened, and she sighted the grand mansion before her- the Garcia family’s residence. The mansion was popular, but the majority could only imagine and picture its appearance in their minds through the expensive gate. Kaylie looked around and joggled her head as the luxurious car sent over to pick her up glided up the winding driveway. The mansion’s sleek modern facade gleamed with floor-to-ceiling windows, polished chrome accents, and creamy white stone. Lush greenery and manicured gardens around it provided a serene oasis amidst the luxurious surroundings. As the car stopped before the grand entrance, a liveried chauffeur with the Garcia family’s logo on his coat chest sprang to attention and opened the door with a flourish smile. Kaylie stepped out onto the driveway, her stilettos clicking on the polished stone. A maid came forward and bowed her head, her right hand on the left, positioning them on her stomach. “Good day,
Minutes later * Kaylie was done eating. She moved to the sitting room, her feet crossed on each other with her back relaxed on the couch rest, and a toothpick in her mouth, still trying to take out the flesh stuck between her side teeth. Gage’s room door opened and Richard pushed him out. “Didn’t expect you're a perfect actress. You look timid, so my expectation wasn't high.” Kaylie glanced at him and smiled. “A needle might be small, but it's not to be swallowed,” she said. “And the little I displayed is just the tip of the iceberg.” Gage nodded, raising his nose. “Not bad.” “Since when have you been watching?” “Since when she started masking her evil while you're also deceitful,” he replied immediately. “I just stayed by so I could witness your capacity.” “Okay, so, what's next? What do you think about my offer? Deal or no deal?” She asked. Gage blew soft air through his mouth and went silent. He sighed again and lightly bit the left side of his lower lip. “Okay,” he said
Sadie had been waiting for Kaylie to come out until she lost her patience. “What could they be discussing?” She wondered, staring at Gage’s room. She stood on her feet and tiptoed until she arrived in front of the room. She stood on her toes, trying to peep through the lens, but couldn't see through it. “If I can’t see it, why not hear it?” She rested her body on the door, her ear glued to it as if she wanted to enter through it. The door suddenly opened, Sadie’s leg slipped, and she fell to the ground. Kaylie’s eyes enlarged and her mouth widely opened, acting shocked. “Oh, my…” she toned and lengthened her hand to help her up. Sadie stood on her feet, staring downward, embarrassed. Kaylie cleaned Sadie’s dress as if there was dust on it. “Sorry, ma.” Sadie smiled insincerely. “Thanks.” She appreciated. Kaylie took her hand off Sadie and furrowed her brows. “But what are you doing here, ma?” She questioned. “I… hum… I was… actually…” Sadie stammered. “I was looking for yo
Emily turned the lever, but the door was locked, so she took her hand off it and knocked. “Who’s there?” Kaylie asked. “It’s me, your mother.” Emily answered, and Kaylie scoffed. “Mother?!” She uttered in disbelief, raising her voice so Emily could hear her. Emily had always forbidden her from calling her mother, so why should she refer to herself as her mother? Especially since Kaylie had also told her not to refer to her as her daughter again. Kaylie removed the duvet from her body and turned off her phone screen before getting down from the bed. She walked to the door, and immediately as she opened it, Emily took a step forward to enter, but she jogged backward. “You can't come in,” she answered. “And why are you disturbing me early this morning?” Emily gritted her teeth, her mind boiling in rage. Kaylie's attitude had changed over the last few days and it got worse every day, always getting on her nerves, but since Andrew had warned her against retaliating, she always cont
Richard parked in front of the biggest modern fashion designing company in the city- Om Kapoor, owned by an Indian lady, whose dresses were popular for being expensive and only patronized by the wealthy ones. Kaylie beamed, excited, knowing one of her long-time dreams was about to be fulfilled. She had always wanted a dress from this company, but Emily refused to get one during the first wedding, even though they could afford it. “Rukmini will attend to you. If you don't want her, let me know.” Gage let out without looking at her face. Kaylie swiftly shook her head. “I want her,” she said, raising her voice a little, unable to hide the excitement running through her. “I wish she would design my first wed-” Kaylie’s eyes widened at the realization that she was about to reveal too much. ‘Fuck!’ She said to herself, closing her eyes a little. Andrew had warned her that no one outside their family should know about her previous marriage, because it must be a secret if she wanted Jaxon
~Days later. ~Wedding day. “Wow, this looks great on you,” Emily complimented, her lips filled with a smile, holding the door, peeping inside the dressing room. Kaylie gave her a side stare. “What are you doing here?” She questioned. She didn't allow Emily and Wendy to come because she didn't want to see them around her. Emily ignored Kaylie’s rudeness. “They'll call the bride soon, and I'll work you down the aisle.” She informed, still maintaining her smile to be sincere. Kaylie scoffed. “Walk me down the aisle?” She repeated and scoffed. She slowly turned her neck until her face landed on Emily, asking, “do you think I'll allow that?” “If she doesn’t walk you down the aisle, who will?” Andrew's voice came walking towards them. Kaylie authoritatively lifted her brows. “Anyone else,” she gave an immediate response. “But can never be her, you, or your daughter.” Emily scoffed. “You may hate us, Kaylie, but you can't deny us. We're still your family.” “We're your parents, aren'
Kaylie’s eyes gradually opened, and she let out a soft yawn, covering her mouth with her left hand. As she stretched her body and slowly turned to face the other side of the bed, her gaze landed on Gage, who was staring at her. “Ahn!” she exclaimed, shocked. She sat up abruptly while Gage shifted backward in his wheelchair, startled.“What happened?!” He asked, his voice raised with concern as he moved forward. “Are you okay?”“Oh,” she said, her hand on her chest as she released a soft breath. She glanced at his face, adding, “it's you. You scared me.”Gage’s expression softened in realization. He placed his hand on her shoulder, apologizing instantly. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. I was—”“When did you wake up?” She asked, her voice a little raised as she struggled to catch her breath. “What were you even searching for?”Gage’s eyes snapped shut, and he let out a soft surprise. “Hum!” Her question caught him off guard, and he went silent for a moment, trying to come up wi
Kaylie stopped rubbing Gage's hand as the car pulled into the compound and parked in front of the entrance. His hand still rested on her thighs, and she lifted her hand to tap him on the shoulder, thinking he was asleep. But before her hand could reach him, his eyes fluttered open, and he gazed at her. “You don’t have to worry about waking me up,” he said, lifting his head from the backrest. “I’m awake the moment you stop.” She lowered her hand. “Okay.” She said softly. She gently removed his hand from her lap and shifted on the seat, turning toward the door to exit. As she reached for the lever, his voice halted her. “What if we spent a few moments in the car?” He asked, but she ignored his question and quickly got out of the car.Richard, who had been waiting patiently, took off his seatbelt and rushed to the boot to get the wheelchair. He positioned it in front of the door beside Gage and stepped forward, expecting Kaylie to take charge. However, she remained still, not making a
“Stop!” Gage commanded, and Richard immediately hit the brakes as if he'd been waiting for the order. The sudden halt sent the cab driver rolling forward a few inches before he managed to pause. As the cab skidded to a stop on the roadside, Kaylie flung open the door and, forgetting to settle the fare, sprinted out of the car, racing toward Gage’s vehicle. The driver quickly shed his seatbelt and leapt out of the cab, calling out, “Ma’am!” He waved his arms to catch her attention, but Kaylie was oblivious, her focus fixed on Gage. The driver swiftly caught up with her, grasping her arm from behind and spinning her around. “You haven’t paid me, ma’am,” he said, extending his left hand expectantly.Kaylie’s eyes widened in surprise. “Huh?” She uttered, patting her jeans pockets in a panic. She checked again, but her pockets were empty. The driver’s finger jabbed toward her face. “You’re paying before you leave here!” He said, his voice escalating. “How could you hail a cab without the
Over an hour had passed since Dr. Gage finished Gage’s physical assessment. He’d headed to the radiology department to collect Gage’s imaging and neurological test results.Kaylie had remained silent, not uttering a word to Gage, while Gage, who’d been eager to start a conversation, had lost his nerve. His mouth had betrayed his heart, and the silence continued. The door swung open, and Dr. George entered, a smile on his face, clutching a file tightly in his hands. “I’m sorry to keep you waiting…”Kaylie’s face lifted, and she glared backward. A smile spread across her face. “Dr. George…” she murmured.George walked around the table, taking his seat and placing the file in front of him. “There’s a free test going on in the hospital today, so the queue was quite long.” He explained.Kaylie nodded, her eyes fixed on the file. “Okay,” she said softly, her mind still on the main point bothering her. “The test… how is it?”George handed her the file, his expression professional. “This is th
“We're here,” Kaylie announced, a bright smile spreading across her face. She glanced up at the hospital sign, her eyes scanning the letters on the board while reading them out. “Care Haven Hospital,” Her gaze snapped back to Gage, her excitement palpable. “This is the biggest hospital in the city. You know that, right?” She asked.Gage nodded, his expression a mix of resignation and fatigue. He had been cooped up in the car for too long and was itching to stretch his legs, but Kaylie’s enthusiasm was infectious, and he couldn’t deny her excitement.Richard hopped out of the car, fetched the wheelchair, and positioned it beside Gage’s door. He spread it, ready to assist Gage out of the vehicle, but Kaylie’s hand shot up, halting him.“Don't worry,” she said, her voice gentle. “I’ll take care of him.”Kaylie quickly exited the car and walked around to the other side, her eyes locking onto Gage’s as she opened the door. She offered a reassuring smile, which made his heart skip a beat. H
Kaylie held up the file, her eyes scanning the staff as she asked, “Does anyone know what this is?”The staff remained silent, deliberately turning their faces away to show disinterest.A smile crept onto Sadie and Vera’s lips as they exchanged a knowing glance, their plan already bearing fruit.Sadie’s gaze dropped slightly, and she softly bit her upper lip, a hint of satisfaction crossing her face. Then her head snapped up, her expression transforming into a cold, stoic mask. “Your lives, your jobs, your fate in this household—it all lies in this file I hold. Anyone care to look?”Vera turned to Sadie, her brow furrowed in question. “What's she talking about?” She asked, but before Sadie could respond, Kaylie continued, her words hanging in the air like a challenge.“What most of you don't know is that my co-wife,” Kaylie said, glancing over her shoulder at Sadie, “isn't the one who signs your paychecks. It’s Gage.”The staff’s eyes widened in surprise, their mouths agape. “Ehn!” The
“I can’t take this anymore!” Sadie screamed, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she sat on the edge of the bed, her teeth clenched in frustration. Vera stepped forward, her eyes fixed on Sadie’s tense form. She had been standing there for minutes, watching Sadie’s anger simmer just below the surface, but she had waited for the right moment to intervene. “If only you’d listened to me,” Vera said, her voice laced with a mix of concern and exasperation. “Things wouldn’t have escalated this far.” Sadie’s gaze snapped up, her face etched with regret and guilt. “How was I supposed to know, Vera?” She whispered, her voice barely audible. “Kaylie was a master manipulator. She made her plan seem flawless, and I fell for it hook, line, and sinker. I thought her tears and concern for Bryson were genuine,” Sadie’s voice cracked as she struggled to continue, the pain of her past interactions with Kaylie still raw. “Her smiles, her reactions whenever I talked about Bryson’s success…” Her word
Chairman Paul entered the dining room, and Kaylie and Bryson stood to greet him. Without a word, he adjusted his chair to his liking before taking a seat. His eyes were noticeably red.“Are you okay, sir?” Kaylie asked, her voice laced with concern. She couldn’t help but notice his reddened eyes. “What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”Chairman Paul’s gaze dropped, and he shook his head slightly. “I’m fine,” he replied curtly. “Are you serving the meal or the maid? Please, let’s hurry. I have a meeting.”Though Kaylie wasn’t convinced, she didn’t press the issue, aware that Gage’s presence meant she should maintain a level of detachment. She nodded and began serving the meal, trying to gauge the chairman’s condition without drawing further attention to it.“Okay, sir,” she said, rising from her seat since the maids were still out on errands. Despite no longer seeking the chairman’s approval, a lingering habit prompted her to attend to him first. As she approached the chairman’s place,
The door creaked open, and before Chairman Paul could even step inside, Sadie sprang to her feet from the bed, her arms crossed over her chest. She strode forward, her eyes fixed intently on him. “You didn't come home last night? Where did you sleep? Where are you coming from?” The questions tumbled out in rapid succession. She’d been waiting, coiled with tension, since the sound of his car had echoed through the driveway. As soon as he'd stepped in, she was ready to confront him. Chairman Paul brushed past her concerns, walking straight to the bed. He sank onto the edge, his movements weary, and began to remove his wristwatch. As he set it down on the nightstand, Sadie closed in, her anger palpable.“I'm talking to you,” she said, her voice even, careful not to let her tone get shrill. “You didn't come home, and you didn't even bother to call. I called you over and over, but you didn't pick up until your phone died, or maybe you switched it off.”Chairman Paul’s response was direct,
