“You’ve to stop now…” Kaylie told herself, giving herself reasons to stop crying.
Her tears had been uncontrollable since she walked out of the mansion and got into the cab which had been driving for over an hour, heading to her family’s home. The place where someone who hated her and never hid it lived.
She wished there was somewhere else to go, but there was none. She had no friends because her mother forbade her from moving with her peers from childhood till she graduated from college.
Kaylie was just a little girl in an orphanage home before Emily and Andrew adopted her. They hadn’t conceived a child when they adopted her, and after they were blessed with one, they neglected her.
Emily constantly reminded Kaylie that she had no place in the family and that even if she would have one in the world, it would be while serving under her daughter, Wendy.
“You’re nothing without us! We took you in so your entire life, don’t you ever compete with my daughter! The only reason you still exist is to serve her.”
Emily repeatedly told Kaylie until Kaylie gave up on finding herself a place in her and Andrew’s hearts.
Ever since she moved into the family, the only person whom she could see his love as genuine was her grandfather, whose presence guarded her. He never let her feel left out when he was around. But she last saw him a month after her wedding so, heading towards the family’s home, she already knew what she would have to put up with- a father, who careless about her and a mother, who would do anything to satisfy and favor her biological so all she would face was abuse and a reminder of who she was.
“We’re there, young lady.” The driver proclaimed immediately as they arrived in front of the described destination- 16, Baboko Street, Surulere city.
“Thanks.” She said.
She wiped her face with the left dorsum and crawled her bottom to the seat edge before she opened the door and got down.
She stepped aside for the car to reverse and after watching it drive away, she exhaled softly and walked towards the house. She entered the compound and glimpsing at her mom and dad’s cars in the parking lot, she halted.
“Am I ready for this?” She asked herself, clenching the edge of her top.
She waited for another second before she controlled her mind, telling herself, “I’ve got to face this. Remember, Kaylie, you’re heartbroken and in pain, but what did you say you won’t do? What did you promise yourself?”
“Be strong and don’t react recklessly. You can’t talk back or fight either of them, so be patient and ignore them. Okay?”
She released her top and even though a part of her mind told her to turn back and never go in, the determined part encouraged her and kept pushing her to move forward until she opened the door, and immediately as she stepped inside the sitting room, Emily stood from the couch and rushed to her.
“What did you say to Wendy?!” Emily challenged immediately as she arrived at Kaylie’s front.
Kaylie closed the door behind her. She had been forbidden to look at Emily’s eyes and since she wasn’t in for a fight, she slightly stared downward. “Mom-” she called, but Emily cut her off.
“Don’t call me that!” Emily cautioned with a raised voice. “I’m asking what happened between you and Wendy. What did you do to my daughter? What did you say to her?”
Kaylie sighed. “Nothing much,” she let out. “I just told her she’s stupid for-”
Emily scoffed, feeling irritated with the little Kaylie just said, and without allowing her to complete her statement, she slapped her. “How dare you!” She shouted. “How dare you say that to my daughter?!”
Kaylie faced downward. “Oh!” She groaned, holding her cheek. She rubbed her cheek until she felt relieved and raised her head. “I knew Wendy had called you but did she tell you exactly what happened?”
She took her hand off her cheek and stretched it out beside her with her eyes widened, wanting to raise her voice. “I caught her and…”
“Shut your mouth!” Emily showed no interest. She knew about what happened. She had known about Byran and Wendy’s relationship a week after they started and she supported it.
Emily suggested it should be a secret until after Jaxon shares his property so he wouldn’t blame Wendy or hate her. But since Kaylie found out already and things were in Emily’s control, she didn’t care anymore. “I know about it,”
“I know about it from the moment it started until now.” Emily confessed.
Kaylie’s eyes widened and her lips quivered with a lot of words running in her mind, but her mouth refused to open. She knew Emily had always despised her existence, but she didn’t expect it would be that bad.
Why didn’t Emily stop the affair before it was too late?
Why didn’t she just order her to divorce Bryan so Wendy could have her before now?
Why did she watch her spend so much time in darkness when she could have commanded her to leave something for Wendy just like she always did since childhood?
It wasn’t the first time Wendy would want something that originally belonged to Kaylie and Emily would instantly collect it from her and give it to her daughter. It all started with candies, gifts from their grandfather, and dresses that didn’t even fit Wendy.
All Wendy had always been after was to make sure Kaylie never had what would make her happy and with her mother’s help, she always succeeded.
“But… why… why would you do that? Why would you support such an affair?” Kaylie finally pulled out, her voice stammering. “Why didn’t you stop them? You knew it was my husband, why didn’t you forbid it?”
“Because that’s what my daughter wants?” Emily let out, giving a no-concern expression. “I’ll do anything to satisfy my daughter and make her happy. If Wendy wants anything, she’s getting it. It doesn’t matter whether or not it’s with you,”
“Whatever you have is never yours, Kaylie. Everything belongs to my daughter and if it’s with you, you’re only helping her to keep it. You’re watching after it until she needs it. That’s it.”
A drop of tears fell from Kaylie’s eyes and she wiped her eyes, preventing more from flowing out.
Emily crossed her hands over her chest. “Kaylie, have you forgotten what I always told you or do you think it no longer counts?” She asked, but Kaylie said nothing. “The only reason you exist is because of Wendy. You’re living to serve her and nothing else.”
Kaylie half closed her eyes and balled her hand into a fist to calm herself. Every word from Emily pierced her heart and she couldn’t control herself even though she came back knowing she would hear it. Her mind was boiling in rage, making her mouth desire to yell back at Emily, but since she didn’t want to go to such an extent, she discharged a deep breath to calm herself.
She turned in her old room direction and took a step past Emily.
“Are you walking out of me?” Emily questioned. She expected Kaylie would cease taking another step forward, but she kept moving so she rushed to her front. “Do you think you still have a space here?”
Kaylie ignored Emily and walked passed her again. She arrived in front of the door and, as she laid her hand on its handle, Emily dragged it with her.
Kaylie suddenly lost her mind and, not knowing what she was doing at the moment, she flinched Emily’s hand away and pushed her backward. “Leave me alone!” She yelled.
Emily’s eyes widened, and she couldn’t control herself until her body fell onto the ground. “Hun?!” She was shocked. She raised her widened eyes and fixed them on Kaylie, unable to utter a word because of the shock that was in her.
Kaylie got back to her senses and her eyes widened in disbelief at what she just did. “Mom!” She shouted and quickly ran to Emily’s side. She bent her back to help Emily. “Mom, I’m sorry.”
Emily stood straight on her feet and pushed Kaylie away. “How dare you?!” She ground her teeth with her eyeballs turning outrageously red. She paced closer to Kaylie with her hand raised. She wanted to slap Kaylie, but her husband’s voice came from behind, stopping her.
“Stop!”
Emily took her hand down and glanced backward at her husband with a furrowed face. “Did you know what she just did?! She-”
“I know.” Andrew said, cutting Emily off.
“Hun!” A surprised tone fled Kaylie and Emily’s mouths. It was the first time Andrew was against Emily, for Kaylie’s sake- they argued countless times, but it was inside their bedroom, and for unknown reasons.
Andrew had been watching the scene for a while but didn’t want to intervene because he didn’t want to go against Emily, but he didn’t know what came upon him that for the first time, he couldn’t watch Emily maltreat Kaylie any longer.
Kaylie raised her gaze and glanced at Andrew’s face with pity. “Father…” she called in a weak tone, but before she could open her mouth to add another word, Andrew cut her off.
“Go to your room.” He commanded, avoiding eye contact with her because his heart was racing faster looking at her face.
“Father…” Kaylie called again, taking a step in Andrew’s direction. She didn’t know why a strange feeling of the need to run into his dad’s arms filled her heart at the moment, but Andrew didn’t allow her to get closer to him.
“I said go into your room!” Andrew raised his voice.
Kaylie ceased taking another step forward. She exhaled softly, suppressing her urge for a hug, and without causing another delay, she turned around and walked into her room.
Emily was shocked and she couldn’t say a word. Instead, she followed Kaylie into her room with her widely opened eyes and her mouth that she couldn’t close until Kaylie closed the door.
Immediately as the door closed, she paced to Andrew’s front and looked into his eyes, pointing her hand at Kaylie’s room. “What happened now? What did you just do? Didn’t you-”
Andrew sighed and slightly stared downward. “I understand, Emily, but she was like that because of what she’s going through at the moment,” he said. “She’s not in her right senses right now. Please, Emily, just this once, leave her alone. Please.”
-
Kaylie closed the door. She took off her shoe and jacket and flinched it on the floor and before she arrived closer to the bed, tears had forced their way out of her face.
She sat on the bed edge, tears streaming down to her cheek, following her face line to her mouth while some fell on her chest.
“Oh!” She uttered in a raised voice. She wished to scream out louder, but knowing it was useless, she controlled her mouth.
She covered her mouth with her hands and joggled her head. “Life sucks…” she whispered. She sniffed to stop crying, but the more she tried, the more the tears flooded out.
“Guess I need this…” she said to herself. She took her hands off her mouth and fell back on the floor, allowing the tears to flow out at ease.
“What should I do?”
The question that no one could answer escaped her mouth, and before another thought could zoom into her mind, she remembered Echo’s advice.
‘If you’re opportune to see a chance that could grant you freedom, take it. To live happily, ma, you need to be like a waving flag and take steps you didn’t see coming.’
She quickly lifted her back from the bed and withered her face. “How do I go about this?” She thought for a second until an idea zoomed into her mind and her brow raised.
“Yeah! Him! Only him could help me!”
A few days later.*“Where are you coming from?” Wendy threw a question immediately as Kaylie entered, her right leg crossed on the left as she picked up her wine and sipped it.Kaylie sighed. She was tired and didn’t want to get into an argument, so she headed to her room. She had been staying alone in her room for the past week, and the last time she went out was when she visited the lawyer to sign a divorce paper. She went out a few hours ago to search for Jaxon but didn’t find him or even trace his whereabouts. She asked his father about her grandfather, but he didn’t know and didn’t even care. Or perhaps he knew, but didn’t want her to know.Wendy put her wine down and paced to Kaylie’s front. “You’re getting worse every day,” she uttered. She sighed, rubbing her forehead with her right hand and the left on her waist. “You’re disgusting. I just don’t know how long I would have to put up with you before Mom would find a solution,”She raised her eyebrows and shivered her head. “I
Kaylie was nervous. A part of her mind warned her, telling her she had made a wrong decision that would lead to her destruction, and another part that didn’t think twice before signing the agreement kept pushing her. However, it was too late to have a second thought- she was already in a car sent by the Garcia to pick her up.She was on her way to a blind date with an heir of a conglomerate family who had once been the talk of the city, every lady Mr. Perfect, but suddenly vanished for years with no explanation for the public. And now, she was on her way to meet a stranger who, whether or not she wanted to change her mind, would become her husband in less than a week.Knowing they were getting closer to the venue at the roll of the tyre, Kaylie’s heart started pounding. She was fidgeting because the timid part of her mind seemed to have taken over. She held the left part of her chest and half-closed her eyes as she discharged a short, yet deep, breath. “Stay calm, Kaylie,” she told he
“Wow!” Kaylie toned in awe immediately as the ironed crafted gate opened, and she sighted the great grand mansion before her. The mansion was the Garcia family’s residence, and it was quite popular, but many could only imagine and picture its appearance in their minds. The mansion’s sleek, modern facade gleamed with floor-to-ceiling windows, polished chrome accents, and creamy white stone. A tranquil water feature flowed seamlessly into an infinity pool, blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors. Lush greenery and meticulously manicured gardens around the estate provide a serene oasis amidst the luxurious surroundings.Kaylie looked around and joggled her head as the luxurious car the Garcia sent over to pick her up glided up the winding driveway. As the car stopped before the grand entrance, a liveried chauffeur with the Garcia family’s logo on his coat chest sprang to attention and opened the door with a flourish.Kaylie stepped out onto the driveway, her stilettos clicking on
Sadie led Kaylie into the kitchen and immediately as they stepped in, the maids stopped their activities and looked in their direction. They bowed their head and without saying a word or waiting for a go-ahead, they continued with their activities.Sadie walked to the big rectangular table at the center of the kitchen with covered dishes of food and stews. She arrived at the front dish and the maid beside it quickly opened the meal for her to see. And she repeated the same action until she inspected all the dishes. She walked back to Kaylie’s side. “This is how it’s been done,” she whispered. “All meals must be checked before they will take them out.”Kaylie smiled. “Noted, ma.” She said.Sadie turned around and slipped her fingers, ordering, “bring them out.”“Okay!” The maid said in unison, and immediately as the maid at the entrance closed the door behind Sadie and Kaylie, Mrs. Chloe, the chief maid and coordinator, looked around.“You…” she uttered, pointing to a few of the maids,
Chairman Paul came out of the room, but the door didn’t make a sound for Kaylie and Gage to notice his presence, so he folded his arms and leaned his body on the wall to watch.Kaylie accepted the handshake. “Deal,” she agreed, her lips filled with an excited beam. She released Gage’s hand and stared at him in the eyes. “So, let’s proceed to the next thing,”She stretched out her hand and requested. “Where is the contract?”The question piqued Chairman Paul’s interest, and his lips worked against his mind as he took a step closer, his curiousness taking over. “What contract?” He intervened.“Hun!” Gage and Kaylie exclaimed with their eyes enlarged. Kaylie quickly put her hand down beside her and took a step backward.Chairman Paul moved closer. He stared at Gage’s face and opened his mouth to direct his question to him, but Gage quickly looked away, avoiding his eye contact with him as always.Gage loathed his father and blamed him for everything he had passed through and was currentl
Gage pulled the door with his leg, and Kaylie pulled him inside. She moved him to the bedside and walked back to the door and closed it.She turned around and as she took a step forward, a thought zoomed into her mind, causing her to halt for a second with her brows furrowed. “Are you sure it’s safer here?” She threw a question, and without waiting for a response, she turned backward and locked the door. “No, I think it’s safe now.”Gage scoffed. “No one comes in and out of nowhere without my permission. Not even the old witch and that status called a chairman,” he said. “Though I still can’t guarantee they can’t eavesdrop. I had no control over who was outside. I can’t see them, so it’s hard to know.”Kaylie tightened her lips, comprehending, “Okay,” she uttered, prolonging the last alphabet. She nodded her head for a second, adding, “with this, you mean the wall has an ear? Nowhere is the safest; I just have to be vigilant.”Gage tinted his lips with a smile and stared at Kaylie for
Sadie walked out of the room. She looked at the sitting room, and seeing Kaylie wasn’t there, she glanced into Gage’s room next to Bryson’s on the other side. She exhaled softly and tiptoed until she arrived in front of the room. She wanted to look inside through the peephole but was short and her head couldn’t reach it. She stood on her toes until her eyes reached the lens level. She moved her head closer, with her right eye closed and the opened left glued to the lens, trying to peep through it into the room, but she saw nothing. She moved her head backward, and attempted it again, closing her left eye and opening the right, but she still couldn’t see anything. “Shit…” she whispered. Her effort was a waste, and she was already feeling a slight pain in her feet, so she gave up and stood straight on her feet. She turned around to the sitting room to wait until Kaylie came out, but the curiosity in her won for the second time, and without giving it a second thought, she turned backward
“Mother…” Kaylie called, staring backward to see Sadie hadn’t taken a step forward.Sadie shook her head and she smiled. “Oh. I’m sorry,” she apologized and leaped forward. She arrived beside Kaylie and grabbed her hand. “Let’s go.”“Hun!” Kaylie sounded in opposition. She looked at Sadie’s face, saying, “the chairman, would he want me inside the same room with him?”Sadie grinned. “He has gone out.”“Okay.” Kaylie uttered. She smiled and entered the room after Sadie, holding hands with her.Immediately as they entered, Sadie released Kaylie’s hand and paced to the bed. She picked up a pillow at the edge and took it to the header, placing it in its right position. After setting the bed and adjusting the duvet, she turned to Kaylie, smiling. “Please, have your seat,” she offered, pointing at the Armchair and a table in its front, at the left side of the room, after the door.Kaylie bowed her head. She rushed to the chair and adjusted her dress before sitting down. “Thanks, ma.” She sai

‘Be cautious, for in Garcia’s family, secrets run deeper than bloodlines. There's always more to the story than what's being told.’Rukmini’s warning left an indelible mark on Kaylie’s mind, the seed of concern rooting in my thoughts as she walked out of Om Kapoor. She had a few questions in her mind, but couldn’t ask because Gage entered the dressing room and didn’t leave her alone with Rukmini until they finished the adjustment and left.Kaylie’s worry had weakened her she couldn’t push Gage and requested Richard take the box out and come back for Gage. She entered the car and seeing her expression and mood since she came out of the dressing room, Gage suspected something was wrong. He didn’t want to question her, but he couldn’t hold back anymore. “What’s wrong?” He asked, his voice was low and Kaylie couldn’t hear him because she was lost in thought. So he raised his voice a little. “Kaylie.”“Hun!” She toned with her eyes widened in shock. She blinked her eyes twice and faced him
Kaylie’s words, though spoken without intention, held a strange kind of comfort in Gage’s mind. They were a fleeting moment of connection, a whispered promise that he was not alone. At that moment, it didn't matter that she didn't mean to touch his heart; the words themselves took on a life of their own, bringing solace to a place within him that needed it.“Thank you…” That was all he could say. His quivering lip was stilled by a determined jaw, a mask of strength hiding the tremble of unshed tears. He sniffed and repeated. “Thanks… thank you.”Kaylie stood on her feet, bending her back a little. She rounded her right arm around his head and rested it on her stomach, patting his back with her right hand. “You may not be fine now, but I can assure you will be soon.”Rukmini was surprised. Though she didn’t intend to taunt Kaylie and only involved her name to caution Gage so he wouldn’t dive deeper into the past she didn’t want to talk about or be reminded of, she didn’t expect any wom
The car arrived in front of Om Kapoor, the biggest fashion design company in the city, owned by an Indian business lady in her early thirties. The company was popular for selling the most expensive dresses, including daily wear, so only wealthy people were their customers.Kaylie smiled, excited her long-time dream was fulfilled. During her first wedding, she wished her dress would be from Om Kapoor, but she couldn’t afford it. Emily wouldn’t get it for her and didn’t allow her grandfather to get it for her as well.“I’ve called Rukmini. She’s the one attending to you.” Gage informed.Kaylie’s eyes enlarged. She couldn’t keep the surprise and she repeated the name with a raised voice. “Rukmini?!” She exclaimed.Gage nodded, his face furrowed, confused, staring at her with his head moved backward a little. “Yes,” he confirmed, asking, “why? Don’t you like her? You don’t want her to attend to you?”Kaylie swiftly shook her head, waving her hands. “No… no… I want her. I want Rukmini to a
Emily’s eyes slammed shut and her lips quivered; staring at Kaylie saying those words. She wished she could open her mouth and utter a word in defense, but she couldn’t, so she kept staring at Kaylie’s mouth.Kaylie tinted a part of her lips with a smile and took another step forward. “This isn’t a warning, just as a mere daughter you’ve always maltreated, neither as just a daughter-in-law of the Garcia family; this is from a new updated version of Kaylie;”“The updated version with countless new features and terror upgrades. Don’t mess with me or I won’t have a second thought before fighting back. I don’t need a third party’s voice,” she said. She raised her brow and locked eyes with Emily as she tapped herself on the chest, saying, “I, Kaylie, will fight for myself. Okay?”Immediately, as Kaylie stopped talking, Emily giggled and stood on her feet. “No, Kaylie,” she said, shaking her head. “That’s not what I mean. I wasn’t talking about you. I was...”Kaylie raised her shoulder and
Emily turned the lever. Since the door was locked and she couldn’t open it, she took her hand off it and knocked on the door.Kaylie was busy pressing her phone and didn’t respond until she heard the knock again. She raised her gaze, looking at the entrance. “Who’s there?” She asked.“It’s me.” Emily answered, her voice raised a little so Kaylie could hear her.Kaylie could identify Emily’s voice, but she wanted to give her a little hard time, so she acted ignorant. “Who are you?” She asked.“Kaylie, it’s me.” Emily answered.Kaylie chuckled in a manner that Emily would hear her. “You? Who?” She riled. “Identify yourself by name, position, or maybe your role in this family.”Emily bit her lower lips and ground her teeth. She already suspected Kaylie wanted to provoke her, so she didn’t say a word.“Are you still there?” Kaylie asked but heard no response, so she continued pressing her phone. After standing for a minute, thinking Kaylie would come out or open the door for her to get in
