Emily turned the lever, but the door was locked, so she took her hand off it and knocked.

“Who’s there?” Kaylie asked.

“It’s me, your mother.” Emily answered, and Kaylie scoffed.

“Mother?!” She uttered in disbelief, raising her voice so Emily could hear her.

Emily had always forbidden her from calling her mother, so why should she refer to herself as her mother? Especially since Kaylie had also told her not to refer to her as her daughter again.

Kaylie removed the duvet from her body and turned off her phone screen before getting down from the bed.

She walked to the door, and immediately as she opened it, Emily took a step forward to enter, but she jogged backward. “You can't come in,” she answered. “And why are you disturbing me early this morning?”

Emily gritted her teeth, her mind boiling in rage. Kaylie's attitude had changed over the last few days and it got worse every day, always getting on her nerves, but since Andrew had warned her against retaliating, she always cont

Richard parked in front of the biggest modern fashion designing company in the city- Om Kapoor, owned by an Indian lady, whose dresses were popular for being expensive and only patronized by the wealthy ones. Kaylie beamed, excited, knowing one of her long-time dreams was about to be fulfilled. She had always wanted a dress from this company, but Emily refused to get one during the first wedding, even though they could afford it. “Rukmini will attend to you. If you don't want her, let me know.” Gage let out without looking at her face. Kaylie swiftly shook her head. “I want her,” she said, raising her voice a little, unable to hide the excitement running through her. “I wish she would design my first wed-” Kaylie’s eyes widened at the realization that she was about to reveal too much. ‘Fuck!’ She said to herself, closing her eyes a little. Andrew had warned her that no one outside their family should know about her previous marriage, because it must be a secret if she wanted Jaxon

~Days later. ~Wedding day. “Wow, this looks great on you,” Emily complimented, her lips filled with a smile, holding the door, peeping inside the dressing room. Kaylie gave her a side stare. “What are you doing here?” She questioned. She didn't allow Emily and Wendy to come because she didn't want to see them around her. Emily ignored Kaylie’s rudeness. “They'll call the bride soon, and I'll work you down the aisle.” She informed, still maintaining her smile to be sincere. Kaylie scoffed. “Walk me down the aisle?” She repeated and scoffed. She slowly turned her neck until her face landed on Emily, asking, “do you think I'll allow that?” “If she doesn’t walk you down the aisle, who will?” Andrew's voice came walking towards them. Kaylie authoritatively lifted her brows. “Anyone else,” she gave an immediate response. “But can never be her, you, or your daughter.” Emily scoffed. “You may hate us, Kaylie, but you can't deny us. We're still your family.” “We're your parents, aren'

~In the evening. Kaylie’s heel resonated on the floor as she stepped out of the room into the parlor in an expensive green floor-length gown and a tiny diamond necklace on her neck. Her face was layered with powder that blended with her light skin, and pale pink lipstick complimented her soft, full pink lips. Her blonde hair was styled in a classic bun with a delicate silver hairpin placed in it. Sadie, in her knee-length gown, had been waiting for Kaylie. She couldn't enter the room since Gage was inside, so immediately, as Kaylie came out, she rushed to her front. “Wow!” She scanned her from head to toe. “This looks great on you,” she complimented. “Bryson chose the correct size.” “Oh,” Kaylie said, surprised. “Is the dress from him?” Sadie nodded. “Yes,” she confirmed, smiling. “He auctioned it. It's expensive, but he got it because he believes you're worth it.” Bryson entered. “Wow!” He uttered, looking at Kaylie. He rushed to her front and scanned her body before getting hi

“No!” “I can’t!” “Never!” A voice woke Kaylie up from her sleep, and she quickly lifted her head from the pillow with a furrowed face. “Hun!” The room was dark, so she quickly turned on the light. She glanced at Gage next to her on the bed and saw him swiftly shaking his head with his eyes still closed, gripping the duvet, gritting his teeth. Her eyes widened in shock as she observed him for a few seconds. “What’s wrong with him?” She asked in a whisper. She watched him for another second, thinking he would stop, but he didn’t. “Gage…” she called in a low voice, still staring at him with confusion and shock, reflecting on her face. She stretched out her hand to touch him but reluctantly ceased and took her hand back. “Mom!” Gage continued shouting from his sleep with his eyes still closed. “Dad! Please, save me!” She watched him for another second until his forehead became wet with cold sweat. “Gage…” she called his name again, confused. She bent on her knees and tapped him l

Kaylie stepped out of the bathroom and saw jewelry boxes on the floor and dresses on the bed, while Gage remained in the same spot where she had left him in his wheelchair next to the bed. She scanned the jewelry boxes, trying to count them with her eyes, but she couldn’t finish counting before she shifted her gaze to the dresses on the bed, and without bothering to count them, she shifted her gaze to him. “What’s this?” “Nothing much,” he answered in simplicity. He pointed to the boxes on the floor and the dresses on the bed, furthering, “just two dozen jewelry sets, and dozens of dresses. Auctioned from the same brand Bryson ordered the one that makes you see him as the best,” He looked at her face and chuckled. “But at prices higher than his. These dresses are special editions, with some having just two types and the highest products of such qualities are five,” he explained, trying to exaggerate to impress her. “And the interesting price is that you’ll be the only one with th

“Oh.” Kaylie uttered as she shockingly stepped aside, avoiding bumping into Richard. He was holding Gage’s meal plates, packing them to the kitchen. Without glancing backward, she pointed in the kitchen direction, permitting, “Go first.” Richard curtsied his head. “Thanks, ma.” He said. He released the door lever and walked away in a hurry. After eyeing him until he reached the parlor, Kaylie took a soft breath. She entered the room and unlocked the door before slowly taking her steps toward Gage, sitting on the couch. Seeing her enter, Gage immediately looked away, staring to the left side, avoiding eye contact. “What exactly are you scared of?” She threw a question immediately as she arrived at his front, with a few gaps between them. He slowly turned his neck, and as his eyes landed on her body, he lifted his eyebrows twice before his gaze met hers. “What do you mean?” He asked, his face furrowed unclear. She exhaled softly, keeping her voice low. “I’m asking what you are afr

“Anything you want,” he answered in simplicity, his gaze filled with determination, certain she wouldn’t succeed. “Just name whatever you want. I’ll give it.” She nodded her head twice, her lips filled with a beam. “Deal,” she uttered. She loosened her hands from her chest and walked to his side. She sat down and raised her finger. “To prove my plan works out, I’ll retrieve one of her plans against you. How about that?” He nodded in acceptance. “Agreed,” he said. “But I know you’ll fail.” She lifted her brows, grinning. “I have a request already, and I can’t wait to get this done so I can ask for it,” she stated. “Hopefully you won’t fail me.” He chuckled. “I’m who I am, but one thing that can never change about me is I always stand on my words,” he let out. “And in addition to whatever you request, if you retrieve useful information from Sadie, I’ll blindly follow every other plan you’ve got. I’ll let you take the lead.” “This inspires me more.” She said and winked at him. ~ “H

Kaylie opened the door and peeped into the room before entering. “Why are you sneaking in?” Gage threw a question, turning around to face the entrance immediately as the door creaked. He was sitting in his wheelchair in front of the window. “No one forbids you from entering as you wish. The only thing we won’t be sharing is the bed.” She scoffed, slightly shaking her head. “I’m not sneaking in,” she uttered. “Just checking before entering.” “Checking for what?” He asked. “Because I don’t want to witness what I shouldn’t.” She answered in simplicity. He furrowed his brows, unclear. “And what don’t you want to witness?” He asked. “Unnecessary conversations shall be avoided.” She said, walking to the couch to sit. After watching her sit, he turned the wheelchair to comfortably look at her. “Where have you been?” He questioned. “Taking fresh air outside,” she gave a simple response, adding, “taking fresh air.” “With who?” He interrogated. She chuckled softly. “You know already,

Kaylie’s eyes gradually opened, and she let out a soft yawn, covering her mouth with her left hand. As she stretched her body and slowly turned to face the other side of the bed, her gaze landed on Gage, who was staring at her. “Ahn!” she exclaimed, shocked. She sat up abruptly while Gage shifted backward in his wheelchair, startled.“What happened?!” He asked, his voice raised with concern as he moved forward. “Are you okay?”“Oh,” she said, her hand on her chest as she released a soft breath. She glanced at his face, adding, “it's you. You scared me.”Gage’s expression softened in realization. He placed his hand on her shoulder, apologizing instantly. “I’m sorry. Kaylie stopped rubbing Gage's hand as the car pulled into the compound and parked in front of the entrance. His hand still rested on her thighs, and she lifted her hand to tap him on the shoulder, thinking he was asleep. But before her hand could reach him, his eyes fluttered open, and he gazed at her. “You don’t have to worry about waking me up,” he said, lifting his head from the backrest. “I’m awake the moment you stop.” She lowered her hand. “Okay.” She said softly. She gently removed his hand from her lap and shifted on the seat, turning toward the door to exit. As she reached for the lever, his voice halted her. “What if we spent a few moments in the car?” He asked, but she ignored his question and quickly got out of the car.Richard, who had been waiting patiently, took off his seatbelt and rushed to the boot to get the wheelchair. “Stop!” Gage commanded, and Richard immediately hit the brakes as if he'd been waiting for the order. The sudden halt sent the cab driver rolling forward a few inches before he managed to pause. “We're here,” Kaylie announced, a bright smile spreading across her face. She glanced up at the hospital sign, her eyes scanning the letters on the board while reading them out. “Care Haven Hospital,” Her gaze snapped back to Gage, her excitement palpable. “This is the biggest hospital in the city. You know that, right?” She asked.Gage nodded, his expression a mix of resignation and fatigue. He had been cooped up in the car for too long and was itching to stretch his legs, but Kaylie’s enthusiasm was infectious, and he couldn’t deny her excitement.Richard hopped out of the car, fetched the wheelchair, and positioned it beside Gage’s door. He spread it, ready to assist Gage out of the vehicle, but Kaylie’s hand shot up, halting him.“Don't worry,” she said, her voice gentle. “I’ll take care of him.”Kaylie quickly exited the car and walked around to the other side, her eyes locking onto Gage’s as she opened the door. She offered a reassuring smile, which made his heart skip a beat. “I can’t take this anymore!” Sadie screamed, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she sat on the edge of the bed, her teeth clenched in frustration. Vera stepped forward, her eyes fixed on Sadie’s tense form. She had been standing there for minutes, watching Sadie’s anger simmer just below the surface, but she had waited for the right moment to intervene. “If only you’d listened to me,” Vera said, her voice laced with a mix of concern and exasperation. “Things wouldn’t have escalated this far.” Sadie’s gaze snapped up, her face etched with regret and guilt. “How was I supposed to know, Vera?” She whispered, her voice barely audible. “Kaylie was a master manipulator. She made her plan seem flawless, and I fell for it hook, line, and sinker. I thought her tears and concern for Bryson were genuine,” Sadie’s voice cracked as she struggled to continue, the pain of her past interactions with Kaylie still raw. “Her smiles, her reactions whenever I talked about Bryson’s success…” Her word

Chairman Paul entered the dining room, and Kaylie and Bryson stood to greet him. Without a word, he adjusted his chair to his liking before taking a seat. His eyes were noticeably red.“Are you okay, sir?” Kaylie asked, her voice laced with concern. She couldn’t help but notice his reddened eyes. “What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”Chairman Paul’s gaze dropped, and he shook his head slightly. “I’m fine,” he replied curtly. “Are you serving the meal or the maid? Please, let’s hurry. I have a meeting.”Though Kaylie wasn’t convinced, she didn’t press the issue, aware that Gage’s presence meant she should maintain a level of detachment. She nodded and began serving the meal, trying to gauge the chairman’s condition without drawing further attention to it.“Okay, sir,” she said, rising from her seat since the maids were still out on errands. Despite no longer seeking the chairman’s approval, a lingering habit prompted her to attend to him first. As she approached the chairman’s place,

The door creaked open, and before Chairman Paul could even step inside, Sadie sprang to her feet from the bed, her arms crossed over her chest. She strode forward, her eyes fixed intently on him. “You didn't come home last night? Where did you sleep? Where are you coming from?” The questions tumbled out in rapid succession. She’d been waiting, coiled with tension, since the sound of his car had echoed through the driveway. As soon as he'd stepped in, she was ready to confront him. Chairman Paul brushed past her concerns, walking straight to the bed. He sank onto the edge, his movements weary, and began to remove his wristwatch. As he set it down on the nightstand, Sadie closed in, her anger palpable.“I'm talking to you,” she said, her voice even, careful not to let her tone get shrill. “You didn't come home, and you didn't even bother to call. I called you over and over, but you didn't pick up until your phone died, or maybe you switched it off.”Chairman Paul’s response was direct,
