Miaka woke to an unfamiliar scent - one of coffee and burning foodstuffs. Bread and jam and cereal and porridge oats. How could one person burn so much food in such a short space of time?

Not that she wasn't grateful to be fed. She was grateful just to be alive at this point.

Rubbing her head, she made her way to the open-plan kitchen and took a stool by the breakfast bar. It was Milo cooking, as Kai offered instructions that seemed counterintuitive.

"If it's burned already it won't burn again, just keep cooking it," he was saying, poking a piece of bacon with his index finger.

"I don't think cooking works like that," Miaka was sad to inform him.

"Oh I dunno," Kai ran his hand through his long, shaggy mane. "Just eat it."

He dumped some food on a plate and flung it towards her. She had to dodge to catch it without losing a hand.

"Thanks," she said, stuffing the food in regardless of its quality or cookedness.

"It's actually really good."

That last part was only half a lie - the bacon

    11Miaka sat at the bar, not drinking.It wasn't that alcohol did no work on her - it most certainly did - she just did not prefer the taste of beer over the instant coffee they had on tap there.As she sipped her coffee, Miaka contemplated just telling the truth.
